Sprinkle food grade Diatomaceous Earth on the floor, walls, roosts of your coop. Then add water to a small container of DE to make a paste to pack into nooks and crannies of coop. This is a great preventative and fix for mild mite or lice issues.
Thank you Kelly! To start next spring and summer time I will be doing this to make sure we don’t get mites again. Our poor girl was very sick
@@AcresOfAdventure why wait? this is a yr round preventative treatment. its safe for humans and animals kills anything with an exoskeleton including fleas roaches ants spinder.......add it to their dust baths too.
This a great video. I don't have hens yet but even I could tell that she was doing better. I needed to know this. Thanks!
😎👍🏻🐔🐔
Thanks you! It was not good to see her like that but happy we got to experience it and know that we can help
PSP elector is the best for lice and mites
I bought feed last week, opened it 2 days ago and it had mites all over inside the bag. Guessing I now know how mine got them this time. I had picked up 2 bags, both bags had mites. Sadly, it's that time of year that mites thrive (hot and humid). I can't fit the big bags into my freezer, but they say to put their food in the freezer for a few days will kill the mites. I'm going to buy food grade bags and break big bags down and freeze the food. I have read that we are supposed to throw away infested food, and have read that freezing it will work too. I never thought of giving them raw beef to help speed recovery, have always used raw yoke egg mix with herbs. Going to have to try that. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with treatment. Hope all the chickens are okay.
Wow I never thought they would be in the food. That is awful. So far it seems they have been taken care of. Hoping these cooler temps help keep them away.

You need to be really careful with permethrin as it kills bees and other pollinators.
Great video! Just discovered your channel and subscribed.
Glad you enjoyed Grovie Mom! We are glad to have you along!
Straw bales are known as mite nesting in coops. I put some inside my coop and two of my chickens died of mite infestation. Stay away from straw bales.😢
Yep sane. Chooks didn’t die but got mites from straw.
Looks like multiple people have said the same thing. We haven't had a problem until the last year until now but now we know what could be causing it. Thanks for sharing Dina!
@@AcresOfAdventure They have many options to invade...birds, rats, previous owner, you can carry them around...
Do you feed them any type of ground beef? Sorry I know the question can sound kind of ehh but just curious I would like to try that with my chickens thank you 🙏
If one chicken has mites or lice then you have to treat all of them.
Hello I love your channel. I wonder how many hours did you spend cleaning till solved your problem?
Thanks for your time 🤠
We cleaned it out and sprayed it down, let it sit and dry the whole day and they slept in it the next night
@@AcresOfAdventure I can't get rid of them...every spring they come back...
Every time you clean the coop throw DE down and sprinkle it on roost bars and in corners
Do yall have a dust bath with DE available for them?
How long did it take after you sprayed coop inside before you can let them back in? Do you have to pull their eggs and throw away for a couple weeks after? Thank you!
We let the coop sit for about 12 hours to air out. The bottle does say they can be around it right away but we just figured it would be best to let it air out and dry before they came back in. We discarded any eggs that the chickens were on because they were covered in mites. Other than that we have resumed using their eggs now that it is resolved. Hope this info helps!
@@AcresOfAdventure Thank you!
Lime is best
how is it used?
Mites are really awful, garlic does also help 🙂
Thank you! I have heard garlic will help and we sure do love using natural ways to help with problems
How do you use the garlic?
@@Noniinthebush You can put garlic in drinking water they say also good for vampires :P
Straw or cedar chips
?? I hear Straw is worse for mites.
I have heard cedar is not good for chickens. So normal wood chips would be best if you want to use it for the coop then compost for after you clean it out
You should use sulfur.
what is DE
Diatomaceous Earth. It's the fossilized remains of tiny silica-bodied sea creatures, and bugs hate it. It feels softer than sand to humans but like glass shards to bugs.
