Henlo all! I'd like to clarify something: I mention in this video that ivermectin may carry a greater risk for chickens than diatomaceous earth. Ivermectin is a relatively benign medication that has been around for a long time. With birds, the risk comes with injecting it. There is also the risk of over-medicating them if you don't have the correct oral or topical dose. I recommend working with a veterinarian (if possible) if you wish to use ivermectin for your flock.
Hello! I’m a 13 year old with a obsession with chickens. My family and I went on a vacation and when we came back, my chickens had mites! My whole family avoided my for several days out of fear of catching mites! This video really helped me. Thanks!
You should have no haters. Whomever is hating on this lovely chicken lover needs to stop. Girl, you're awesome! I've had chickens for 3 years now, and you've given so much helpful information. Thank you!
I know this video is 2 years old BUT I just wanted to say that DE has been such a blessing and a Godsend for us. I couldn’t agree with you more! The misinformation out there to steer people away from truly good products is (or should be) so obvious now with everything going on in the past few years. I’m not new to chicken keeping but I haven’t had them for years and I am starting again with my little flock of 8. Loved a few of your videos so far and look forward to watching many more. Thankyou!
I had a nasty infestation a few weeks ago when my broody hen sat for 3 weeks and didn't bathe. When she finally vacated the nest I went to clean it all out and I was covered in mites. 3 days later, I was covered in extremely itchy mite bites! Imagine how it is for our girls? My solution when cleaning out the nesting box was to spray eucalyptus and let it evaporate (very strong not good in large doses) I then put lots of wormwood, tansy and lavender in the boxes and there hutch. The coup has lemon balm, wormwood and tansy growing so they are walking through that all the time. mites don't like strong smells. I also add apple cider vinegar and garlic to their water. She's all better now and my bites have gone.
I’m 12 years old I have a flock of three, just discovered my favourite polish chicken has mites😢. This is the only helpful video I have seen so thank you so much. Heading of to pets at home now to get some treatment. You saved my babies!!!
Here's another affordable natural option which has definitely dealt with the issue for me. Having a contained suburban run mixed with the humid weather in my location, it's a very common problem for most chicken owners around here. Into a spray bottle, mix 1 part vegetable oil (or other edible oil) to 2 parts water. Add a very small squirt of dishwash liquid (just enough to emulsify the mix when shaken) and a few drops of essential oil if you have them (lemongrass, lavender etc). This mixture can be spayed directly on the birds feet and any coop surfaces such as the roosts that you find mites - both as treatment and deterrent. Dust baths are a must and if you can afford it, adding DE / dried herbs from someones garden to the coop bedding has completely eliminated the problems. This spray was a game changer for me. Great channel BTW!
I have tried that as well! Same solution! Not sure if it was that or putting DE and ash directly in their nesting boxes. My chickens aren't very friendly w me, but I know they're putting that chicken butt down in the nesting box. Lol?
If you're spraying this mixture on the chickens, won't their diry bath stick and make a heck of a mess?? And I think my rooster has mites on his comb, would I be able to spray this there? Worried about his eyes. Thanks🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓
I've always used FGDE with my chickens, never had any issues with it harming them, us nor our dogs. Now that we have a pellet stove, I'll add the wood ash. I also much prefer natural treatments to chemical ones and feed my flock organic feed, it's healthier for them and for us...after all, whatever they eat goes into their eggs, and we eat their eggs. ❤️💛💜
I bought a flowering chrysanthemum plant... and put it next to the poultry wire for my chickens... they nibbled all the little buds off the areas where it hadn't flowered out yet. they loved it. I figure that's helpful, since chrysanthemums are the source of pyrethrum.
I’m glad you mentioned that chickens can definitely gets mites in winter! My poor rooster suffered an infestation in January, and we’re in eastern Canada. Diatomaceous earth saved the day (with some help from garlic)!

Great vid!. Had a new girl come into my flock from unknown farm . Adopted her because the rooster almost fully pecked her eye out 😥 she was starting to do much better with us and her eye was healing nice . Then came out one morning and she wouldn't come out . Checked on her and she wasnt hardly moving. Looked closer and she was covered in red mites!! Got her out of the coop and they were all over "her" nesting box. Unfortunately she did not recover from the infestation. That day built new coop for the rest of the flock and burned the other one haha now i use ash for there baths and sprinkle around the cracks of the coop when cleaning . Mites cant breath in fire place ash 😊
I also wanted to tell you that my son and I love and respect you!!! You’re the best resource we have to raise healthy happy chickens ! BTW we will never eat these chickens! We got them for their eggs! My son wants to get ducks and quails. I’m so glad he’s a great engineer, builder etc!! He went to college for welding and ended up learning engineering etc. bless you my new friend and mentor!!
I have owned dogs for 36 years and in that time we have had a mild outbreak of fleas twice in really bad seasons. I used diatomaceous earth on my dogs after bathing and drying. As well, using and extra fine sieve, I sprinkled diatomaceous earth throughout the house and have had no problems and used no harsh chemicals.
I'm gonna try this THIS year. Last year my poor dogs got infested in fleas for the first time ever and we tried almost everything to get rid of them. We ended up coating them in coconut oil, it worked to get the fleas off and keep them off but my dogs got a little sick from licking the oil off
WONDERFUL information! Way to have the backbone to stand for what WORKS for you contrary to popular opinion; I love DE and it has saved my girls (who I also LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!) more than once. I now mix a small amount in their feed! SUBSCRIBED!!
DE - wonderful stuff!! My son infected the guest room with bed bugs from his luggage after he came back from Dubai. I dusted the mattress, the pillows, the plinths and rugs etc etc and no more bedbugs! Ants in the kitchen? Easy peasy - DE along their walking paths. I rub DE in the cracks of the chicken coop and like you, add it to their dust bath and nesting boxes. Happy chickens! Kids arguing over the TV remote? I dust them with DE and the little pests just melt away! Just kidding. So glad I found your channel. Learning a lot, thanks!
I honestly eradicated my home of bed bugs with DE. It took about two years; however, if I would have been more persistent, I probably could have done it within a year. Of course it took more than DE, but the DE was what eventually broke the bed bug cycle. The DE done at least 75-80% of the work. So, I'm a firm believer in DE, and was downright proud of myself. It took so much research on those little bastards as well. It almost 99% of the time takes professional Pest Control to eradicate bedbugs
Glad you are bed bug free! I never ever ever want to see another one again! Talkin' about psychological warfare! My ex wife could snooze like a baby every night with those damn things crawling all over her! I was like a kid on Nightmare on Elm Street- do not fall asleep!
I bought DE from a farm and feed store (it has a picture of horses and farm animals on the bag) but it's grey, not white. Did I buy the bad kind? We also have bees (on the opposite side of the yard from the chicken run) so I don't want to use the other insecticides.
OMGOODNESS I just love you! You have helped me so much! I started with one baby chick found in a parking lot. Wasn't set up for chickens so raised this chick in the house. She got 2 sister the next year. And this year I got 5 babies. I have loved your videos! Thanks!
Dear chickenlandia I owe this information to you and your followers because i like this channel a lot. So i've been raising chickens for ten years now and I can assure you that if you apply olive oil onto the treating areas (under wings, vent, back, neck) the parasites drown in the oil. You can immediately see the dead mites and lice as you apply it.The oil remains on the chickens and spreads evenly on the whole body for about 2 to 3 days ( depending on the quantity you used) and functions as a trap for the mites that climb on the chickens during the night. I highly recommend that you try it and share the results with the community. Note that I have also tried sunflower oil and didn't work. It kinda dried out and ruined the feathers. Good luck, greetings from Greece.
One more thing to explain how this works. The parasites are so small in size that a film of oil is like a swimming pool for them and they drown in it. Finally not that I have done this in mild weather conditions of spring or autumn. I don't know if the oil freezes in cold or is dangerous in hot summer.
We use DE all the time and have never had a problem with it. We have a bunch of kids and a bunch of different animals and this is the safest, easiest, best thing we've found.
I use DE on my dog after she was infested with fleas from the neighborhood cats (we have a catch and release spay program for cats where I live). I put it in my chicken's dust bath, just because I heard they can get fleas, too. Thanks for the confirmation that I am doing right by my girls!
Saw you post in the backyard chickens group on Facebook. You are such a joy to watch and I’m learning so much already. I just watched a few of your videos and if it wasn’t way past my bedtime I would watch many more! I’m so inspired to really do so much more for my girls. I love the little xylophone you have in the coop! I also think your birds are beautiful. Looks like you have some serma bantams which I want so badly. We are first time chicken owners and have 18. We recently lost one because she was a runt and another because of a hawk. We are working on trying to secure our yard, but it’s large and they beg us daily to get out of the run. They love free ranging. I work from home so sometimes I go outside to babysit them with my laptop! Ha anyway, thank you for putting out such great quality content for us crazy chicken people! 💕
Hi ,love your video and have found it very useful.I must confess my chickens did get mites, what a nightmare ,we had a infestation. The worst thing was I got the mites and at night I could not stop itching ,the mites where so so tiny you could hardly see them .We had to burn the coop down as we tried everything to get rid of them ,lucky the chickens survived .Never again,so I do most of what you say .What herbs do you put in the dust bath?I love your idea of the dust bath in winter and the cider vinigar!thanks you are videos are informational and inspiring!
Thank you for the information on both Diatomaceous Earth and Elector PSP . Also for showing exactly where and how you are applying the DE. I also have watched your video on Elector PSP.. So helpful because I after having chickens for a a few years realize my birds have MITES 🙄😧
I screamed YES! when you raved about D.E. That stuff is my best friend and I put it everywhere. 3 days after I brought my chickens home, I got up to see how they were doing and I was HORRIFIED to see billions of tiny ants. They were EVERYWHERE!!!! I have a good friend who raises chickens and I’m crying and sobbing on the phone to her and sniveling so bad, she said “Who IS this?” She told me to run down to Tractor Supply and get the biggest bag of food-grade D.E. they have and sprinkle it lightly in all the places they’re crawling and put a little in their food. Literally, the next morning there were ant carcasses all over the place but, not a single live ant! Overnight! When I clean out the coop, chicken run and especially the beginning of spring, I sprinkle it all over. Plus, I mix a small amount in their food and sprinkle it around the perimeter of their chicken run and even my house, cuz they were coming in my house, too. Eeeuuww!
I use clove essential oil to get rid of chicken mites. Mix the oil with water in a spray on the chickens and in the nesting area. You can add peppermint essential oil too. Worked for me.
I'm so thankful to have found your channel!! I am a new chicken owner:) I'm totally paranoid about mites etc. The girls are friendly but are still not being held yet as they have only been here about 10 days. How could I know if they have mites? Im so itchy just thinking about it!!
Thank you so much! I had no idea those products (Elector PSP & Permethrin) are harmful to bees, aquatic life, and cats! I also didn't know the differences between the two types of diatomaceous earth. Wow! I always learn something important when I watch your videos. Also, I loved that conversation between the ducks! I could have watched more of that! Haha!
I just got a rooster that I’ve kept in quarantine and right when we got him his legs looked off....raised scales near his feet and his feet and legs were abnormally red. I’ve been treating is as scaly leg mites and as opposed to Vaseline I read some sources say to use castor oil. It’s taken almost a month but I’m finally noticing improvement. Legs aren’t as red and scales don’t look as raised.
I use de food grade in my hens nesting box and wood ash on the ground where they due there dust bath at and I have no issue with dust mites I also feed them garlic powder daily
So glad to have you as a reliable resource! I had already seen a previous video of yours about dust baths, so I ordered DE and herbs. I just got my orders delivered the other day and its time to clean the coop!
Thank you so much for this educative yet profoundly simple and very interesting video. I just began a small chicken keeping project here in Africa, Kenya - of about 50 one-month-old chicken, and am learning a lot as a brand new chicken farmer, hoping to one day go big commercially in well kept and healthy chicken. You are such an inspiration. Thank you so much..!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia Thank you so much! Really kind of you to wish me well. I will put in my very best effort and though this a part time personal job, am sure it will do just fine. Again, i sincerely appreciate your reply and great insights on how to reduce cost of chicken feed by soaking the oat meal in clean jars to increase feed volume, and the chickens love it! Appreciated.
Ifollowed some of the advise you shared on preparing chicken feed and am glad it worked out just perfectly. Thank you so much! I have 50 birds now. I sincerely appreciate.
@@brianmboya6590 hope everything is doing fine brother. I too just started commercial chicks. Got 50 1.5months chicks and 150 baby chicks. I realized a day ago that there are some mites/lice, which probably led to loss of 4baby chicks 😳. I'm hoping to try and use the recommendation provided here. However most of the names she used, I have never heard about them and will be looking whether I can find them from agrovet tomorrow. I will really appreciate to hear from you whether you have ever faced the same issue, and how you dealt with it.
All 80 of my chickens have mites. Its a constant battle. The mites attach to the quill at the skin and eat the chicken till the feather is weak and blood leaks into the feather quill and becomes like a feeding tube for the mites. I think cleaning the coop where they sleep with a torch of some kind. Like sweeping it out with a flame. Of course you dont let the coop catch on fire but just running the flame around so the heat can get into the nooks and crannies.
There's Food grade D. Earth and its amazing!! It was the only thing that got rid of carpet Beatles. They came into my house through hand me down clothes. For 6 years I couldn't completely get rid of these things. Within about two days of Putting the power In Just the corners of cabinets... they were dead and never came back. Amazing! Just don't breathe it in the powder is bad for your lungs
We have recently discovered that our beloved birdie girls have lice and mites. YIPES!! We ordered Elector PSP to treat the girls and their coop, egg boxes, etc. We cleaned out the egg boxes and put diatomaceous earth in the coop, egg boxes, and our birds. Today we got the Elector PSP and plan to treat everything this weekend. Any thoughts? Thanks for all you do Madam President!
Hi, I want to thank you for all your videos. Very informative and learning a lot from you before I start my little flock. I started with Quails and now moving to chickens. Once again thank you from SJ, CA
hello Dalia, I love watching your videos, I learned a lot from them (I nearly watched all of it!). I am so curious, why you are so carefull mentioning diatomaceous earth? Here in EU (I'm from Poland) we use the amorphous diatomaceous earth (cristaline
I found a couple of places that will send 5ml elector PSP for $15. It makes a half gallon. That was more than enough for my 2 chickens and their coop. One treatment. It worked great!
Can all of these remedies for lice and mites be used on baby chicks too? Permethrin? Diotemacious earth? safe for baby chicks? What about the chickens inhaling the diotemacious earth? and permethrin dust?
I have chickens, and my sister has a faborite. She hugs it everyday, however, one day she got black bugs on her skin and hair. We later found out it was mites. God.. She plucked so many feathers out!
Had this moment this morning.. I'm a total noobie & my partner has a few very old birds.. We lost an old girl this morning & I discovered she was absolutely covered in mites!! I freaked the f out & it's really ruined my day! Thanks for this video.. I feel much better now. 😂
Girl. I want to have a conversation with you. DE saved my chickens from mites. I regularly use it with ash in their dust bath area. Just not on a windy day. Lol! I'm south of Houston, so not a lot of cold weather. Bugs are a regular thing. I put it in the nesting boxes, bc I know they're going to get that little chicken butt in there. Your thoughts? Btw, I don't know how you can handle your chickens. Mine run from me unless I have treats. Lol! I could never dust bathe them by hand.
I just love listening to your videos, really informative. Any thoughts on Epsom Salt baths? Would that be good to do before using diatomaceous earth or it does nothing for mites or lice?
This helps a lot. I don't have any trouble with mites or lice but I do use the DE as a preventive. I even put a little in their food from time to time. Is this okay? I had been told it helps keep them from internal infestations they don't need.
Great video, tons of great info! We have had chickens for 5 years now. We live in a rural area and the chickens are all over our pasture, free to do whatever. The have two large coops that they are secured in at night. We also have a livestock guardian dog Heidi that helps keep the chickens safe. We just added a Black copper Maran hen a year ago. She has the strange habit of molting in the spring. No other hen does this now I think it could be mites. Thanks to your video. I believe in diatomaceous earth 100%. So going to give that a try and see if this stops the feather loss. Thanks.
I have a deep litter method, but also use diatomaceous dust in one corner of the run. Should I stop using it, Madame President? Also, I have three pullets that are 4 months old and one hen. Should I put out oyster shell at this time or wait for them to grow to 6 months? This is my first time raising chickens. My run is about 150 square feet but I cannot free range as I live next to a redwood forest in the countryside. Too many predators. Kit Fox, bobcat, weasels, and even a few mt lions spotted up the way. We made sure to triple predator proof the run as a result. So far, no predators, but I know it’s only a matter of time.
Hey there! I wouldn't use the DE wherever you are doing deep litter. I would go ahead and purchase the oyster shell and then start giving it either at 20 weeks or when they start laying if it's before that. :-)
Thank you for always providing helpful information. I need to go check our chickens. I just cleaned the coop and nest boxes and then treated with DE but didn't treat the chickens. Thank you!
I use covered kitty litter box for dust bathing. You suggested it, and I thought it was great. My hens love them as laying boxes. They prefer to dust bathe in the dirt in their pen. 😂
I have a young chicken in my "chicken rehab" I have set up in the basement. I brought her in after finding her on the ground in the coup not moving. It appeared she got picked on pretty bad by one of the other guys. My poor little Freya...she's one of my favorites. She was very alert, but couldn't stand. I couldn't find any broken bones. After lots of research, I found a good recipe to get nutrition back into her system, the "Rickets Diet". She's been inside for two weeks now, and doing so much better. However, as I was sitting on the floor with her on my lap giving her light strokes on her neck, I noticed little tan things crawling on my leg. Well....being new to this, you can image how I freaked out. I put her back in her crate, removed all of my clothes, threw them in the washer, ran upstairs buck naked (thank god no one was home!) and jumped in the shower. After much research, I believed it to be lice. Googling how to get rid of.... I found you. You don't know how happy I found you!! I can tell I am going to learn so much. Thankfully I have DE powder. Had the husband pick it up the other day. I always like to have it on hand. Thank you for your very informative video. I'm looking forward to watch more!
I treated my chickens and the coup twice now yet I still see groups of mites on my chickens heads. Are they still alive or dead and just still latched on?

What is meant by DE ?
@@NS.GARDENS123 diatomaceous earth.
@@amandaguidry4242 ok thanks for ur instant reply
@@NS.GARDENS123 lol I had just happened to pick up my phone and got the notification. You're welcome
Man I just found your site. You really had alot of details I didn't know or think of. I really like your narrations style. I was itching I must admit!
excellent explanation of terrain theory, nice job! thank you so much for everything!
Love your teaching and your smile. Thank you
You’re so welcome!
I love your approach. Thanks, from South Afrika
Your video was very well done. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing! I subscribed and put notifications on, so keep them coming.
I put a layer of wood ash in the coop then I put their bedding- it works great to kill bugs. I also use DE food grade, lime powder in there dust bath.
I just love you! Thank you for your great videos!
How often can we give fresh table scraps?
I use DE on my dog after she was infested with fleas from the neighborhood cats (we have a catch and release spay program for cats where I live). I put it in my chicken's dust bath, just because I heard they can get fleas, too. Thanks for the confirmation that I am doing right by my girls!
Diatomaceous earth of any type is harmful to the respiratory system.
Awww! You are so welcome. Seramas are awesome! I love them.
Diatomaceous earth sounds like a better option. Food grade for safety..
Appreciate the info and your adorable personality!
Aww thank you!
Eeeuuww!
TS does not carry food grade they carry feed grade...there is a huge difference.
DE food grade is good for humans as well. I take it everyday.
@@pamelasandstrom4401 why do you eat it?
I use clove essential oil to get rid of chicken mites. Mix the oil with water in a spray on the chickens and in the nesting area. You can add peppermint essential oil too. Worked for me.
Great information, I love watching your videos! So funny when the ducks got noisy!
Haha they like being loud!!
I'm so thankful to have found your channel!! I am a new chicken owner:) I'm totally paranoid about mites etc. The girls are friendly but are still not being held yet as they have only been here about 10 days. How could I know if they have mites? Im so itchy just thinking about it!!
You could wait until the go to the roost at night and then look them over. They are usually easy to handle at night. :)
Love all your videos! You are so REAL! My first chicks should arrive this coming week. I am so excited!
Haha!
Thank you so much for the help!

Thank you for these wonderful tips. 💖
I use de food grade in my hens nesting box and wood ash on the ground where they due there dust bath at and I have no issue with dust mites I also feed them garlic powder daily
I love you frames and the information you give out. thank you presidente
How much do you put in their dust bath ?
So glad to have you as a reliable resource! I had already seen a previous video of yours about dust baths, so I ordered DE and herbs. I just got my orders delivered the other day and its time to clean the coop!
Yay!! I'm so glad I can help.
Wow, that's amazing! Good luck!
Omg! How is it going? I know it's a year later, but I hope you were successful!
Captivating chicken lady with lots of great videos

This vides was very helpful for me & gave me some great ideas for how to make a good indoor dusting area for the chickens
I’m so glad!
Sounds like you’re doing everything right!!
Thank so much for the great info. I am new to this and I always come back to you for info. My chickens have become my babies /girls.
Love them.
Great video. Thanks. Some things I will try.
Madame President dropping knowledge bombs about DE
BOOM 💣🧨💣🔥🔥🔥
This is really my first year with chicken lice and having to treat. I LOVe and appreciate your videos! I'm mixing up wood ash and DE today!
It's such a pain!! I hope you can resolve it quickly and I'm glad it was helpful. 🥰
Do the chickens end up defecating in the dust bath? How often do you change out the dust bath? Great channel by the way!
They do sometimes. I keep a cat little scooper to clean it. I replace it about once a quarter.
Hi, I want to thank you for all your videos. Very informative and learning a lot from you before I start my little flock. I started with Quails and now moving to chickens. Once again thank you from SJ, CA
Awww! Thank you so much!
Got some Chickens in Newark, CA. Want to move to quails or pigeons, but chickens are enough for me... for now
hello Dalia, I love watching your videos, I learned a lot from them (I nearly watched all of it!). I am so curious, why you are so carefull mentioning diatomaceous earth? Here in EU (I'm from Poland) we use the amorphous diatomaceous earth (cristaline
How often do you apply the poultry dust to the chickens? It doesn’t say on the container.
Good info. I have been using Food grade DE for a number of years and have not had any problems.
I found a couple of places that will send 5ml elector PSP for $15. It makes a half gallon. That was more than enough for my 2 chickens and their coop. One treatment. It worked great!
What are the places, please?
Can you please share where yo purchase a small amount? I can’t afford the expense of $100 or more
We used diatomaceous earth when we had mites on our parakeets long ago. I don't know the downside of using it with poultry.
Can all of these remedies for lice and mites be used on baby chicks too? Permethrin? Diotemacious earth? safe for baby chicks? What about the chickens inhaling the diotemacious earth? and permethrin dust?
Love you President.
I love your videos!!! Thanks from Texas😃
Aww! Thank you.
That was great thank you for sharing 👌🏾
You’re so welcome!
I'll have to keep a lookout. My horse had live a few winters ago YUK. New chicken mom here. Thanks for sharing.
Quebec Homestead oh man. I’ve had goats get them and it’s not fun at all!
I think it’s a great idea to put it in the nesting boxes! I’m originally from the Dallas area so I know all about Texas level bugs haha!
I just love listening to your videos, really informative. Any thoughts on Epsom Salt baths? Would that be good to do before using diatomaceous earth or it does nothing for mites or lice?
Good video informative always happy and uplifted after watching your videos thank you for sharing!!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks.
You're so welcome! 🐔
Love your personality
Thank you!
Thanks for all the information shared....madam president😊😊
You’re so welcome!

where do u get the dirt for your chickens dust bath i cant find it anywhere??!!
I usually just get some from the yard or I will buy a bag from the garden shop. :-)
I've used DE since 1975. Never had a problem.
Is there any danger of the chickens breathing in DE and it damaging their lungs?
Watching from Philippines very impormative vlog..wow amazing
Thank you for always providing helpful information. I need to go check our chickens. I just cleaned the coop and nest boxes and then treated with DE but didn't treat the chickens. Thank you!

Very informative! Thank you for this video..
I use covered kitty litter box for dust bathing. You suggested it, and I thought it was great. My hens love them as laying boxes. They prefer to dust bathe in the dirt in their pen. 😂
Can chickens eat to much of grit? I don’t know, may be my chickens are crazy, they eat it all. But to much of it can create problem for them?
You're so welcome!
How is Freya? Was it hard to get rid of the lice?
Where did you get that dust bath tub with cover
