mac book air is for students basically, not hard editing and storage

that's what I was told. Thats why I went with the pro.
Can we do basic editing on iMovie on this or is that not gonna work properly too??
Artlicious I guess... that really depends on what configurations you get in your laptop. I guess you could get away with basic iMovie editing. More manipulation such as Final Cut Pro, you’ll receive some lagging and maybe some occasional freezing but nothing too extreme (this is on the base model)
Okie Dokie What should I upgrade for it not to lag or freeze with movie editing and various tabs open? The memory or the processor?
I really want the Air bc it’s so slim and light. I will probably only use it for school & Netflix. I do edit but I edit small edits on videostar which I love doing on my phone so I won’t need my laptop for that so I think I’ll be fine with a MacBook Air.
She’s talking about if you edit with bigger editing programs like After Effects I’m also an Instagram editor like you and since I edit with After Effects so I use a MacBook Pro because, the program sometimes crashes when editing, the air is good for doing homework and watching movies and surfing through the internet, while the Pro is good for editing or gaming.

adore subliminals it should be fine, I edit on ae on my MacBook it air, I edit sort of heavily now, but after having it for like 2ish months it has gotten used to my heavyish editing
I just suggest upgrading the specs to i5 and 16gb if possible for a better experience
I got the air around early May and it’s pretty alright, the fans sometimes turn on when I’m editing because I precomp. But now after having it for about 2 months I feel like it’s getting used to my “antics” because it barely over heats when using ae, it’s been getting better. Currently I’ve been trying to animate which requires a lot of layers + then the layers and effects for the edit. It’s fine if you just use it for school and Netflix. The times when the fans were really loud were when I played gimkit for school (which probs won’t be an issue after this whole thing ends), and when I was presenting my science fair slides (which used both chrome(that already used a lot of ram) , camera, and screen recording)...

I think MacBook Air works best for people looking to do only basic functions on their laptop and it's probably the best option for someone who doesn't want to exceed their budget but prefer an mac laptop over a windows one.

My old hp makes suchhh a loud fan noise it literally scares me. And that’s why I’m saving for a Mac...
If your planning to play games on it, it may get hot and the fan is not that loud but it is a bit loud

I just can’t afford a MacBook Pro. I’m already saving for a long amount of time and it’s hard to make money with school and such. My hp is fairly old and slow and I just want something that I could watch movies on and play some games on.
I've been wanting the 2020 MacBook Air since it first came out! Here where I live, Norway, we have a different school system than America, and I'm starting in 11th grade ("High school" in Norway = 11th-13th grade), and we need a computer when we start. The school sponsors two Macs (MacBook Air and MacBook Pro) and another computer each year, and this year they're sponsoring the 2020 MacBook Air in space grey, and I could not be any happier! I also get student discount so I only need to pay $500 for a NEW MacBook Air!

I literally chuckled at 8:06 when you made that comparison about the fan noise on your old MacBook Air vs your new one.
I see you also did your research. A lot of people (especially some tech UA-camrs) have been throwing around the word "over heating" when in fact it DOES NOT suffer from over heating but rather the device itself thermal throttles. When the components of the computer get too hot it begins to slow down so that it can recover and cool off. But props to you for actually doing your research. I feel like the points you made were very well thought out and you weren't loosely throwing out information. I really enjoy your videos and love the aesthetic and feel to them. I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate the fact you put in so much effort into your videos.
FYI - If you end up wanting to switch your MacBook for the pro you can do so later than there 14 day period just make sure it doesn't exceed more than a month. Customer service at apple is extremely understandable and will gladly switch out your air for the pro if you just tell them the new model for the pro came out after you had purchased the air. And that the air just doesn't suffice with the tasks you are handling. :)

@@sailorpook yeah since the pro costs more than the air. However if you're having 2nd thoughts on your purchase the option of returning it and paying the difference for the pro makes the process a lot less stressful as opposed as to being outside the return window and having to sell off the laptop yourself only to buy the pro.

It's a hard decision to make but I want to know what I should do in this case.

Yeah the Macbook Air is not made for editing at all. If you can’t afford the Pro don’t settle for the air IF you need it for editing because it’s not built to handle it. If it’s for school the Macbook Air should be fine. You can always buy a used Pro but it’ll still be pretty expensive because it takes these laptops a long time to depreciate. I would go for the core i5, 8GB memory and 256 GB storage for school. If multitasking is important to you go for a higher memory like the 16GB if storage is important to you go higher on the storage like 512 GB or 1 TB. But honestly if you need that much space or power just go for the Pro but check both the 13” and 16” because once you start messing with the specs that much, the 13” starts costing as much as a 16”. With mac what you buy is what you get. They don’t offer an SD slot on the newer models so you can’t get more storage so make sure you know how much you need. I’m not sure how difficult it is to get external storage for a mac.
Yeah, I just bought the Macbook PRO with 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, 32GB memory, 1TB SSD storage and it is truly incredible. Love the integration with the phone and even my watch, which can unlock my computer. I also have like, 20 tabs or so open in Chrome and Final Cut still works smoothly with no hiccups or slow downs. It was worth the splurge.
So true. I have a macbook air, macbook pro and dell xps. The macbook air I use for writing and school work. I had an air that lasted me through college. For editing and graphics i use my dell xps and macbook pro cause some software isn't compatible with macbook pro. People are just getting the air cause apple keeps hiking up the prices. I remember when you could get a macbook for $800 now they cost as much as a down payment on a car

Only reason I'm looking at the air is to compliment my Mac Mini 2018/2020. But I worry about overheating issues people say if I get the base model the i3 I'm sure it wont overheat If I watch 1440p video why on earth people watch 4k or edit 4k videos is beyond me the display is not 4k. I also do light Photoshop and maybe 1080p video edits once in awhile.
I love mine. I went through many many laptops with way better specs for example Alienware and I still love the Mac. I think most of people do not realize how Apple makes MacBooks so reliable compared to most of Windows laptops. Not many people have a working laptop from 5 years ago if it's not a MacBook. The Alienware with amazing specs sometimes freezes on me or gives me trouble and it's supposedly one of the best laptops so. This MacBook has an amazing keyboard, AMAZING SPEAKERS (I have never owned a Mac before but many Windows laptops) and runs very fast. I edited two videos and it was slower the more effects I put on it, but I figured that when I save it and then go back to working on it, it works very fast again. Does not get hot - SLIGHTLY warm, still not as much as some bigger laptops with fans lol and it is always quiet lol. Maybe I will get a Pro later and I'll just install Windows on it for personal needs. In overall, I love it. I have the I5 processor. Super light and I have it in gold too, looks beautiful. The cons maybe that it does not have USB but you can always get an adapter.

I really like your tech related videos and you’re nice to listen to, I just want to say this to anyone scrolling through the comments: if you can, put in extra money at least for the i5 processor. For longevity purposes and also to avoid problems such as mentioned in this video (editing and safari/multiple tabs). 😊
I’ve always wanted a MacBook Pro too but we don’t have enough money for it yet. Now I want the MacBook Air because I just am gonna use it for entertainment, school and a few computer games like minecraft or Roblox.
Its funny how apple has made us feel that its okay if a laptop isnt good for editing, which costs like £1000. Like excuse me? I know there’s a pro macbook but wtf the air is also expensive and should be able to do that, just like other windows laptops worth that much
You obviously know nothing about laptops, $1000 is such a good price for a laptop let alone a MACBOOK?! That price is amazing for what it has! No one has ever said that this is a editing laptop. Just like if you were planning on gaming you would not get this. So if you are doing heavy editing you should not do this.
$1000 for a good quality laptop is not a lot, idk if you’ve seen other laptop’s prices but they go up to 4000 dollars! also, yes, you pay for the aesthetics here but for me it was so worth it
If you don’t like it don’t buy it.

I've got a 2019 air and I play the sims just fine! (so far) but here's as far as my playing goes: I can only play for about an hour at a time before I'm tired of looking at the computer (I play the game at the MOST 3 times day. But usually twice) I only have 2 expansion packs and 1 game pack... no mods or custom content. I plan on purchasing more packs over time. Hope this helps someone!
EDIT: I don't think any true gamer would be watching a mac review anyway lol but if you are here then you know macs aren't the way to go for gaming.

the MacBook Air is honestly amazing. I bought one and I have experienced no lag and I have a lot more than 7 tabs and it works perfectly. and for me I never hear the fan or feel heat. tip: if ur in Canada make sure to order from the Canadian website because the prices are different because of the currency exchange. in my opinion, its and amazing laptop but I also have the 2022 version so it is 100 percent different!
I’m a writer, so I just need enough storage for lots of documents and processing that’ll work well for MS Word etc. so I think it’ll work for me!
I just got the MacBook Pro and is rlly good for editing, school assignments watch Netflix... But if u are planing to play games, is pretty fast but makes a lit bit of fan noise that annoys me

Erin Rennie i5 is supposed to be better/ faster but I got the i3 and it works amazing so I wouldn’t update to i5
The MacBook pros really last a long time and you’ll get your money out of it. My first MacBook was a refurbished MacBook Pro from 2013 and it’s lasted me three years still. I will say take into consideration what your school work will be. I’m a business major and I often have simulations I need to complete as well as statistics software running on my laptop that I don’t think a MacBook Air could handle.

I agree, the pro definitely last a while. I got mine brand new in early 2015, and it still works like a charm! There’s been a couple issues with it, but nothing too big for me to purchase a new one.
@@brigitte. You could go the same route I did and by a refurbished MacBook! I would do it through Apple's website or Best Buy and not somewhere like Ebay. Remember that Apple has the Education store which gives you discounts if you're a student.
I bought my last MacBook Air in 2010 it just broke at the very end of college and I just bought a 2020...

I just got this laptop because my school is remote learning. Since I don’t do no videos or editing and just use it for basic stuff. This works better for me.
Man I feel bad for the people who got this mba right before the m1 release.. The m1 is such a huge upgrade.
If you guys are worried about your Mac going downhill, it won’t for a while!! I have a 2012 Mid MacBook Air and it has all the updates and it’s in pretty great condition. The only downside would be the battery needing to be replaced since mine is so old!

To be honest battery-wise I expected more but I have managed to get roughly 8 hours from full charged down to 20% which is decent. If you haven't done it already try dark mode , its more energy efficient!

I want a Mac for school, but right now with online school and everything I have to have so many tabs open and I don’t know which one to get. I have to have zoom or google meets calls all running at the same time in the background, while at the same time watching videos, and working on other assignments... should I go with the pro or should the air be able to handle it?? Rn my chrome book lags if I try to multitask too much
I have the air and it's definitely good for students. You can have multiple tabs open without slowing the computer down. This is just from personal experience!

I have the i5 MacBook air with 8 gb of memory and 512 of storage. I does anything I want it to with ease. My only real complaint is the battery only lasts around 5-6 hours. It recharges fast though so its not a deal breaker

I like to have lots of tabs open on safari, Netflix open, Spotify open all at once. Fans will probe turn on (how loud are they?) can an air handle that much going on?
I just got a macbook air and i like doing this too. It takes a lot for the fan to turn on and even when the fan is on, it’s pretty quite, i think if you want this the macbook air is good :)

Thank you for this review. I am a marketing student so I do a lot of videos and photo editing and also tons of essays so I will buy the pro. it is really expensive for me but it is better. I prefer to buy the one that I really need an upgrade in 4-5 years.

I’ll be getting this macbook due to in person school since it will be social distance we need a computer in order to work i needed this video. a lot of people recommended the Macbook Air instead or the Pro because the Air is basically more for students

Try using a external hard drive to edit your videos! That's what I started to do with my MacBook Air and it helps a lot and also processes faster.
So should I get the air cuz I wanna edit pictures maybe some short videos for an editing class but the pro seems really good just way too expensive

Just one question...have you done any Zoom calls on the Air? If so, has the fan been too loud or has the laptop been really hot or slow?
I’m so glad I could help and that this video was useful to you! ☺️ I haven’t had to make any zoom calls on this laptop, usually if I do I just download the app on my phone which is rare, but if you’re asking for the webcam quality I would honestly give it a good 5/10
Thank you for giving us your average consumer perspective because a lot of the tech reviewers who are super into tech give us biased reviews on laptops. Basically, according to these tech guys, if it can’t render 4K video in like 2 seconds it’s instantly garbage. Like I don’t need to know what it can’t do as much as I need to know what it can do. So thank you!
Does it handle zoom well? I may be using zoom lots with online university 🙄

Caroline Grace I think it’s the better option because I have the 2017 MacBook Pro n it handles zooms well but barely heats up compared to when I used my sister’s MacBook Air . Air models have always known to have a bad fan system cuz of it’s slim build. I can run League of legends on the pro without it heating for a game or two. MacBook Air aren’t meant for editing or programs they’re more for typical use, great for college students essays and such. But having a zoom class back to back it’s going to heat up fast and the fan is going to start blowing😂

Yess same, my macbook from 2015 held me threw my whole 4 years in highschool. I just started college and needed a new one but this 2020 macbook air was definitely slow after only 2 weeks. I just went in and exchanged it for the new model that came out this week. I think they purposely make them worse and worse....
I believe that the i5 Processor is way better then the i3 base model version. I just started my channel and I use iMovie because I’m not that good at editing but when I do edit I never hear the fans go really loud
I usually do homework and I have about 5 to 6 tabs and it works great for me

Do you recommend i3 for those who will just browse the internet, youtube, netflix and produce and edit documents in word / excel?
Yes the i3 should suffice for everything you listed but I highly suggest if you can spare the additional $100 get the i5 version. (Double the cores and threads).
get the i5!!! it’s worth the extra $ trust me
I got the i5 one but the fan was almost constantly on, apple told me it was because of the i5 so I returned it and got a pro instead
Well I would say that i3 is a better choice because it will run cooler than i5. I have no problems with my i3 and i have heard a fan only when it did update and even then it was barely audible. :D
got my macbook last year on christmas and after awhile it started being really slow. (i didn’t use the laptop as much, mostly for school purposes). and it broke last month out of nowhere. i went to the apple store and they said it was completely damaged inside and the repair would cost as much as a new macbook would. so i went to multiple places that fix electronics and all of them said they couldn’t fix it. so instead i just bought a new macbook since i’m starting school in a couple weeks and i need a laptop, it’s arriving tomorrow. i’m really hoping it doesn’t break like the old one since i won’t be able to afford a new one again.. the macbook that i bought was on sale and also includes free airpods for the student discount. so we’ll see lol
hey :-) that was a really nice review. ive recently got mine, but i just found out how the webcam isn't as good previous models. what do you think about it? and if you have any idea to improve the resolution of the webcam.

It is better than the previous models it’s that not everything is setup to the M1 chip there will be updates

The reason that the laptop is freezing if you have the tabs open and the browser along with FCP is because you probably bought the 8Gb version. Probably if you had ordered the extra 8 Gb it would not happen from what the other reviewers were saying. I'll know in 10 days when I get mine.
Watching on my brand new MacBook ai 2020r, it's perfect for me bc I use it for basic tasks, social media, Roblox, and youtube.

In regards to The Sims I played sims on my mac book air and If i played for more than 2-3 hours it would start to over heat.But in short intervals it worked really well.
I have it and I use it for typing essays an looking things up and stuff and it works great.
The Airs are good for documents, keynotes, GarageBand, picture editing if you buy a model with more ram, and anything easier than that.
