  • You might have heard that one year in a dog’s life is equivalent to seven in a human’s. But it turns out that the real ratio is both higher AND lower-depending on your dog’s current age.

    Last month I took my almost 12 year old dog to his yearly exam. The vet explained this same thing to me. They age very fast in diet year, slower in middle age, and then again rapidly toward the end. So far, my dog hasn’t began that rapid aging process in the last year or two. Comparing dog years to Human years are just to help us cope with their upcoming death. It ain't fun when you get attached to your little puppy like its your kid and it dies at 13. Its easier if you think, Oh gee, my dog was 91 in dog years, it was time for her to go.
    In reality we can't compare the aging of other animals to our own.

    The equation I have is: "Human" Age = 16 * ln(DogAge) + 31 [NB: ln is natural log]. Note this is for an average lifespan dog of about 12 years. So, a 2 year old dog has an equivalent human age of 42, a 4 1/2 year old dog equivalent is equivalently 55, a 10 year old dog about 68 equivalent. Of course, dogs such as Irish Wolfhounds (6-10 yrs) have far shorter life spans than Jack Russells (13-16yrs) so this eqn can be adjusted accordingly.

What caused dogs or cats to age in this way, especially if it would be what we would consider a non-linear form of aging? Age research is one of the fringe research fields in medicine/biology right now as many people are trying to unlock immortality, so learning how aging works in other animals when they age at different rates during their lives could be really interesting.

A puppy cut their teeth the first month like a child's first year and when a puppies start losing their puppy teeth around 5,6 and 7 months like when children start losing their teeth around 5,6 and 7 years of age , and when a puppy be going thru puberty around the same time a human child does , a male dog be able to get a female dog pregnant at 12 months like a 12 year old child in a female dog be able to get pregnant between 9 and 12 months like a female human can between 9 and 12 years. My kittens are always crazy stupid kids the first year and then they get more mature. Some stay wild a few years (so until they are “30-35” which fits lots of humans) and some get calm directly at “15” or “20”. At around “50” they get really smooth and have their classic spots to sleep and their way of acting really defined and not prompt to change.

    There is another positive attribute to all of this. Chihuahuas and other little dogs tend to live to be older than bigger dogs. And indoor cats tend to live to be older than dogs a lot of the time if they're well taken care of, but now that we know this about dogs, that means your cat's favorite cat toy will live much longer if vets tailor the care to the type of dog they are based on their aging.

That seven-to-one nonsense (especially when blindly copied to cats as if cats and dogs are anything alike 🙄) is, well, nonsense. Proper charts are logarithmic and do exist, so look up one of those for a more realistic approximation of your pet's age.

    Thank you for this information, I trust canines ability to learn so much in the first year, that it’s greatly overlooked because of the “ cuteness” factor. BUT I’m asking if you can do a segment on dog food, focusing on mainstream, advertised, promoted to sell DOG FOOD. I have tried to look up nutritional guidelines and calories for the average mutt ( great respect) ,rescued, normal household dogs. I’m confused. We are looking for cost effective, nutritious, no scary stuff inside, food for dogs Please help narrow down so much of misinformation 🐾🐕🐾🐾🐾 MAHALO ( ps long time subscriber and science lover).

    Can't wait for the cat version of this study :D Currently they say the first 2 years equal to 24 years (12 years per year) and then you add 4 years for each passing year.
    I don't know about that 1 year to 30. Those are DNA markers we've noticed in humans, but dogs become fertile at 6 months and fully mature at 12 to 18 months. More like 12 year old teen and 18-21 year old adult in humans.

    Trust me, most veterinarians know how to interpret the dog’s age, even though it does really depent on the dog’s size and breed. But a more accurate comparison to human years would mostly make it easier to explain a dog’s age to it’s owner bc that’s where the trouble is at

    I have a question nobody pays attention to, not even dog lovers.
    Namely, since it is 7 years of bad luck when you break a mirror, what happens if a dog breaks it? 7 years of bad luck would mean 49 years for dogs. Or is it only 1 year which would make it 7 expected unlucky years? What has the nature provided? And how the mirror knows who broke it, man or a dog?

    Surely it’s incredibly hard to work out considering all dog breeds are susceptible to certain ailments that might suggest ageing when really it’s just their breed. For example, german shepherds often have hip problems but they don’t always appear from ageing.

    • @Restilia_ch
      @Restilia_ch 4 роки тому +1

      For purebreds a lot of their issues are due to the inbreeding necessary to maintain the breed. It's why mutts usually have a lot less chronic health issues.

I was born in 9 months so every 9 months is a birthday for me. We should really go by days cause unless you die during the growing process you indeed was alive since conception and been aging ever since.

    Hmm. The 1.6 year age-rate doesn't seem right for my aging spitz -- he's 15 human years old and obviously nearing the end of his lifespan. His vision has gone bad, he's mostly deaf, his fur is falling out, he's not moving super well, and if doggy dementia is a thing then I'd expect he's got some form of it. The 1.6 dog-to-human year ratio would suggest he's only the human equivalent of 52 (on par with my parents) but he's definitely showing many more signs of his age than they are. He definitely seems to be more the canine equivalent of my grandfather in his mid/late eighties.
