My favorite JCVD film. Van Damme’s charisma really shines in this movie, and of course his martial arts skills are undeniable. I simply never get tired of this one.
I mean…is he really a martial artist? I mean no offence to him or you, but he jump kicks well….but I wouldn’t back him against Scott Adkins or Bren Foster
@@-MrFozzy- Well I mean, the answer to your question is yes. He began studying Shōtōkan karate and kickboxing at age 10. He had an 18-1 record in kickboxing (18 KOs) before he was ever an actor.
Just knowing that Jean Claude Van Damme promoted Oliver Harper's documentary makes like Jean even more.
Interesting, I didn’t know about this. I really wish JCVD would have chilled out a little in his career as a whole. He seemed really difficult to work with, barely liked by anyone looking back…and was too much of a diva…he seems to have wanted to be taken as a superstar from the outset. I like him a lot more in his later life.
@@-MrFozzy- “Barely liked by anyone”. Who said they didn’t want to work with him again?
@@southlondon86 well Jean sure did know how to bang woman with class
I HAVE NEVER BEEN EXCITED ABOUT A MOVIE REVIEW IN MY LIFE!. BEEN WAITING THIS FOR EVAAAAAARRRRR
True, this movie never gets the props of other JCVD movies. It has everything: great on location photography, Cory Everson in her prime, Bolo Yeung and of course 2x Van Damme.
Be sure to check out the official narrated trailer: "They're Damme quick! Damme cool! Damme hot! Van Damme times two! Double the fun and double the Van Damage!"
Classic.
Yes!!! Love the scene where he says, "You, of all people should know, that in my life, I would never wear black silk underwear!" Lol!
"Take your fan-sea close and your blahck seelk ahn-der-wear, Anne go back two, Diss-knee lan"
- Van Damme was awesome as Alex. 😅
I always loved how Chad and Alex different character/personalities are discreetly printed in their very distinct fighting styles. Chad is kinda elegant, acrobatic and very focused on technique (favors kicks and jumping strikes), reflecting his excellent martial arts education and comfortable childhood upbringings. Now Alex, is the opposite. He's more like "terrifyingly efficient", like for him every strike is a finisher (favors headbutts, knees/elbows and punches). He's brutal because that's how he learned to be in the streets, where he grew up alone. They're like the Daredevil and the Punisher. Both badasses, each in their own way.
Alex is more of a "Chad," heh. Also, headbutts don't work IRL. My sensei in Taekwondo taught us that they're malarkey. Well, he didn't phrase it like that, but still.
@@judsongaiden9878 he doesn't use headbutts in mid-fight, but as a preemptive strike, like a sucker punch. First on Chad, then on the badguy messing with his girl too. A surprise headbutt IRL is much more effective than any "surprise" kick or maybe even punch, cause it's just faster to deliver, very powerful, which interestingly enough also translates to Alex brutal "take-no-chances" mentality.
@@judsongaiden9878 He lies! they do, he just doesn't know what he's doing. He sounds like a pussy. That be could said about TKD kicks too, not working in reality.
Tonight I'm drunk, tomorrow I'll be sober, but you'll always be the best movie retrospective reviewer on UA-cam.
Alex and Chad.
Man this movie was epic and full of action.
That scene between Kara and Danielle in the records room. Damn!?
"You are very handsome man... Like Sean Connery"
"Hmm hmm yeah- WHAT?!"
Bolo was intimidating ! The shadow fight scene is stylish as hell!
22:55-22:58 Van damme crushing that glass after finishing his drink is truly badass imho. Lion Heart will always be my favorite JCVD film, but Double Impact is a very close second.
I'm with you. Lionheart (aka A.W.O.L in my Coutry) is much better. Stronger cast, JCVD shows range in his acting, fight scenes are well edited. Even seeing his superiors (who are trying to take him back) rooting for him gives the movie a feel good factor
Talking about nostalgia, this movie really takes the cake for me. It was one of the few from back then that I was in to along with a neighbor friend of mine at the time. We were both around 10 years old and would pretend to be the Van-Damme bros running around with sticks that vaguely resembled firearms we used to kill the shit out of invisible bad guys.
Still my all time favourite Van Damme movie. Always get nostalgia when i watch this one
For me it would be this, Legionnaire, Nowhere to Run and ofc Universal Soldier.
Loved this movie. I think JCVD did some of his best acting in this movie. Always felt he would have been a great Gambit.
Hollywood blew a golden opportunity; he could've given his career a shot in the arm as Remy Lebeau in the first or second X-Men movie.
JCVDs acting is top notch in this. He creates two distinct characters. Good story, killer action. Love this movie.
I remember my 12 year old self turning to my parents and proclaiming with whole hearted sincerity, ‘this will sweep the Oscars.’ 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
One of my favorite movies of all time. "So what's your answer" LMAO
God I loved this movie as a kid. It was so cool. Thanks for brining the nostalgia back to my heart this fine day.
Thank you for this! You're reviews are always so well done with this one in particular bringing me a lot of nostalgia from my childhood. I don't usually post comments on UA-cam, but your videos are so well done I felt compelled too at least show my appreciation. I hope you never lose your passion for making these, but whatever it is you decide to post next I look forward to seeing it!
Absolute classic! Thirty years I was convinced. That JCVD had a twin brother.
Didn't realise just how artistic this film was in places. Those chiaroscuro fight scenes towards the end. Wow. Plus the lighting and production of THE love/fantasy scene. Brilliant retro as usual, Oliver.
Brings back great MEMORIES of watching this as a kid on the Movie Channel. Still love it.
I love when Moon does the ring around the rosie bit then punches his hand. No words just his persona makes him the ultimate foil
1991 gave us Double Impact, Out for Justice, Stone Cold, The Perfect Weapon, Point Break, Thelma & Louise, Robin Hood, Star Trek VI, Flight of the Intruder, The Hard Way, Hot Shots, The Last Boy Scout, New Jack City, Showdown in Little Tokyo, Backdraft, Toy Soldiers, and a little movie called Terminator 2... what a fucking time to be alive.
Damn that puts it into perspective!! Fucking great year for action films!! I was 12 that year. So many great memories.
May I add another one to that list…Ricochet.
I was 9 for most of that year and my parents didn't let me watch rated R movies.........but I had 2 older brothers that had ZERO problems taking me to the movies 😁
These retrospectives are so damn good, thanks for the hard work!
I can remember being taken to the video store in 91 and allowed to rent 2 films. I got this and one other. I didn't even watch the other one instead I watched double impact 4 times on repeat. It's still my 3rd favourite film of all time. His best work.
@@GuillaumeRouleau I'm a child of the 80's. James Bond Licence to kill & Return of the Jedi 😄
Ah yes! This one is my absolute favorite JCVD flick! It's got everything. Awesome review as always, Oliver. Cory Everson, what a babe! This movie is totally smooth...like black silk underwear!
I was 11 when came out. I didn’t see it until it hit the video store but I revisit it once or so a year. Van Damme is one of my idols and I see everything he does. Another great retrospective, Oliver!
Congratulations. Your reviews can do justice for the movies you present. Keep your good job. Very few people can pull something like this, that’s art you know
Van Damme was such a bad ass when we were kids, my cousin and I used to pretend to be Chad and Alex with NERF guns around the house.
The frisk scene was awesome in this movie 😂
Oh, beautiful. Remember my dad rented it and we had a great time on that weekend 📼
Double Impact is my favourite Van Damme movie 🍿 of all time. Sure it's dated and some of the effects don't hold up. But it has unique charm about it and Van Damme is able to craft 2 different characters for the twins. It is the first time I believe Van Damme has played dual characters on screen. The tagline is very fitting, one packs a piece, one packs a punch together they deliver Double Impact.🔥🔥🔥👏🍿🍿
I love that the trailer narration in the beginning is just spoken exposition from the movie. 😂👌🏼
80s and 90s critics were hilarious hating on classic awesomeness,
nowadays they just give 100/100 to any superhero garbage
aah miss the golden days back in 80s/90s, best movies
Early Van Damme films were epic stuff when I was growing up. Hard to fathom it's really been 30 years since I saw Double Impact in the cinema.

Speaking of Geoffrey Lewis, have you ever thought of doing a retrospective of "Way of the Gun"? It's one of the all-time great 'gun guy' movies. The opening scene is one of the best on film, and the final gunfight is just amazing.
One of my favorite movies of all time! I just watched this, again, 2 nights ago. lol Great review!
I don't remember the exact time I first watched Double Impact, but I do recall the era. We'd nip down to the video shop and get our parents to rent out - for £1, no less - what looked good on the cassette box. Predator, Robocop, Double Impact, Bloodsport, and more. Van Damme's late 80s/early 90s output is just great. I recently rewatched everything, including Universal Soldier, Kickboxer, Timecop, Sudden Death, Lionheart/AWOL etc. Enjoyed every single one, as if I were still 10-years-old. Just a great, muscular epoch of film making.
What a gem of a channel this Oliver. Long time fan and patreon. Bless you! :D
Always good to start the day with a Van Damme retrospective by Oliver Harper!
That Final Scene definitely should've stayed in. Chad gets his own Danielle, it's perfect. That Movie was definitely a success. I went 3 weekends in a row, and the Theater was packed all 3 weekends.
Didn't know Tia Carrera screen tested. It would have been an improvement.
@@gooseywhispers The luuv boat scene was "artisic" and one of my favorites. Wish it was longer : )
This is one of my favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme movies! Thanks for reviewing it! This is one of his best movies! Not only do have a one Van Damme... you also get two Van Damme's, which make a Double Impact!
Jean Claude at his finest... still holds up very well. Loved the MVD release.
Another amazing episode Olie! Loved it. And I totally remember loving this movie at the theater when I was 12.
So glad you've gotten around to covering this one Oliver. Easily a top 5 Van Damme movie for me. I can't even count the amount of times I rented this on VHS as a youngster. My friend and I would even pretend to be Chad and Alex and try copy their moves after watching haha. Great review mate.
I LLOOOVVVEE this movie!!!
JCVD genuinely makes Chad and Alex feel like they are 2 different people.
Wow do I miss the early 90’s, this was the bomb back then for sure!!!
Damn Oliver, you made another awesome / entertaining / informative retrospective. You are one of the best.
This was always one of my favourite van damme film's.
What a nostalgia trip. Saw this at the cinema back when it came out. Haven't seen it since. Feels like another world...
This movie was kick arse! This was the first film I ever watched because I wanted to see how the film making was executed. More importantly, this is the origin of the movie trope that the only thing better than Jean Claude Van Damme in your film, is having TWO Jean Claude Van Damme's in your film!
The day is coming when I’ll grab a big bag of chips and a sixpack and rewatch this beast.
Subbed! Awesome upload thanks, been a van damme fan since childhood.
Great retrospective review Oliver. Would be great to have an extended uncut of this film.
Corsican Brothers parody with Cheech & Chong? Something new you learn everyday. Gotta find that movie.
Two van dammes and Chong Li. I love this film.
2:46 Solid gold 80s exposition right there.
I have a promotional “making of” videotape VHS ... it was holy graal for me when I was 10!
So many memories, thank you for doing this awesome video!
Great detail! Good work. I'm now going to watch double impact!
Fantastic Retrospective, as always. Thank you!
forgot all about this movie. Thanks for brining it back. Will need to watch it again for sure!
For the German dubbing they used two very experienced and distinctly different sounding voice actors, which made JCVDs performance seem really good.
I appreciate all the research that you do. Never knew about the Corsican brothers book. I’m glad jcvd gave you props. He’s always been a stand up Charismatic Man. Double impact is a good enjoyable movie.
Oliver you have to upload the Sheldon Lettich interview, please.Great stuff and work ,now and always.
My Wednesday night was just made so much more enjoyable! Thanks mate! 🤘✌
Phenomenal synopsis...loved it when I first saw it on the big screen...love it even more now 💯💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥
Keep up the great work🙌
I love this movie, probably my favorite by van damme..Van Damme really seemed like two different characters as Chad and Alex..really good acting by van damme.
Another quality retrospective mate, I love what you do
I'll be honest, I'm saving this one for later. This was a great movie at the time and it has a great nostalgia value. Your reviews are always great but this one is going to be awesome when I get to it. Been stocking up good videos to keep me motivated and interested when working out. Thanks for the great content.
Bloodsport soundtrack. Perfect for making one extra motivated whilst working out!
Finally, lol. It was one of the VHS tapes I had, and watched this movie countless of times, I don't even know how many, to the point it was imprinted onto my brain, lmao.
I loved this movie as a kid I watched it over and over
I've waited 8 years for this review. Thanks for posting it. The only two films left are "Death Warrant" and "No Retreat No Surrender" and you'll have reviewed every major Van Damme film from 1985-1996.
I believe JVC was thinking with his lower half when he went with the model over Tia C, but regardless, probably my one of my favorite JVC movies of all times.
oh man this is going to be a good one!!! you’re the man Oliver 💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥
One of my favourite Jean Claude Van Damme movies. Watching this review made me go and watch it straight after.
Always loved this movie watched it so damn much when i was a kid
That kick at 9:17 is FAST!
My favourite classic JCVD movie, second only to Timecop. Awesome review, as always, Oliver! I've been waiting for this one.
The funniest thing about Double Impact.
Is Chad and Alex were both raised in different countries.
Yet they both have the exact same accent.
Great movie review and work from Oliver Harper! tis movie was my first JCVD and second movie in theater when teenager. As we say in France: emadeleine de Proust!" thank you
Ill always have brilliant memories of watchin' this, along with all the other JCVD films in friends houses in the summers of '92 and '93. We would chip in our pennies to get the 1 punt and 50 pence needed ( old Irish money) to rent the movie that afternoon. The rest of the afternoon would be infront of the Megadrive. I was 12- 13 during that era and it was amazing. I love these retrospectives on gems from certain timelines of life like this, so top full marks to You. 👍👏👏
Sounds like we had similar childhoods. Almost exactly as you described. Going to a mate's house, watch an 18 on video, play Megadrive or Spectrum games, then nip home for tea. Back out till the street lights came on. Wonderful times.
One Packs a Punch. One Packs a Piece. Together They Deliver ... Oliver's latest review.
Great video. Really enjoyed seeing Hong Kong again, though the memories are bittersweet.
No doubt Jean Claude will be watching this review:) unreal that he helped promote your documentary:) l wonder what he would say if you asked to interview him?
This movie has some classic villains.
Classic.
Even 30 years ago I was wondering how the character of Bolo in the movie stayed the same and did not age after 25 years
I haven't watched one of your videos in years. This retrospective looks good.
One of my favorite Van Damme movies. Thanks for the break down awesomely done as usual.
I can now die happy knowing how this movie got it name XD Love it!
Great choice to review! This is my favourite Van Damme movie and one of my top action movie favourites. The cast and crew did a fantastic job and we just need more fun movies like this.
Been a fan of Van Damm since I was a child. My parents had a copy of Lion Heart on vhs. Watched it all the time.

You're one of my most favorite content creators, Oliver! Keep on kicking arse, and revisiting JCVD classics!
I was one of those lucky kids born in the 80s to see JCVDs early films in the theater. My Dad took me to see Bloodsport when I was 6 1/2 years old! By my request .. not his lol. Fantastic edits man. 👍🏻👍🏻
