This movie & 2 are still funny 'til this day! And Jackie was a beast. I love Chris Tucker's line "We the LAPD, we're the most hated cops in all the free world. My own mama ashamed of me. She tell everybody I'm a drug dealer!"
That drug dealer bit was sooo FUNNY !!! Still is. LOL. Yeah,no-3 was a let down for me,saw it in theatres when it came out,left the cinema kinda bummed.Especially this being the final Rush Hour.

I rented Rush Hour so many times back in the day. I loved the old guy saying, "that aint nothin' but cigarettes" and Tucker saying, "THATS CIGARWEED!"
Even though Rumble in the Bronx was my first exposure to Jackie Chan, this was my favorite of his films. The best part was it the bloopers where Chris Tucker had a hard time saying 3 Chinese words and Jackie was laughing because of everyone criticizing his difficulty speaking English.
I love Rush Hour in terms of its wholeness as a film, whereas Rumble has parts that are corny and almost unbearable to sit through. But man, the fights in Rumble were just beyond anything I'd seen at the time and that's why it'll always be special to me. But nothing beats Project A and Legend of Drunken Master. God he's a legend.
Rumble in the Bronx is my favorite movies of Chan's :)

Jackie Chan was the first actor I officially recognized as an "actor" when I was a kid, I saw a different movie prior to Rush Hour 2 and I remember asking my mom, "why are they calling him Lee? Isn't his name Jackie?" And she explained to me what an actor was, my mind was blown and I've been a huge fan ever since
That reminds me of the bloopers from Rush Hour 2 where Chris Tucker kept calling Jackie's character by his real name and then Don Cheadle says "His name is Lee, goddamnit!"

To be fair, I don't think anyone ever thinks of Jackie Chan as his character when they watch his films. Not the way some actors just completely embodied their characters, like how Christopher Reeve WAS Superman. An actor as unique as Sylvester Stallone could still really fool you into believing in Rocky and Rambo as characters. Even someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who in half his movies was just "Arnold Schwarzenegger except the characters are calling him something else" really became the role of the Terminator. With Jackie Chan, he's just Jackie Chan, which also makes going back to his films kind of hard once you dig deeper into the sort of person he's become.
Also fun fact: the Chinese restaurant featured in the movie (mentioned at 15:20 of the video) is still open in Chinatown, LA to this day! It's a difficult place to miss, the store owners painted "Rush Hour was filmed here!" on the wall outside lmao

I saw this movie for the first time last year and I could tell it was really important. Two people of two different cultures from opposite sides of the world coming to realize that they have more in common than they thought, and putting them in the front lines like this, that was tight
This movie came at peak race relations in the West. The whole movie Tucker and Chan make fun of blacks and Asians and it's hilarious and really entertaining. Plus Jackie saying the N word is always hilarious. What a fantastic action comedy, one of the best in the genre
I watched it on TV on Saturday & realized that the main 3 who saved the day were a Chinese man, a black man & a Latina. But no one gave shit about that. We only cared about the action, the characters & the one-liners.

Rush Hour still holds up as an entertaining action buddy cop film. I do enjoy the 2 sequels as well and they're entertaining as well. Another fun retrospective video.
I used to watch this movie on VHS everyday when i was 4. Still one of my favorite movies.
Another fantastic retrospective Oliver, little gem about Rotten Tomatoes creator.
I remember having the DVD of this and in the extras the US stunt team talking to Jackie's like they were idiots.

The film was definitely a break from the norm at the time, I still don't think Hollywood knows what to do with Jackie.
And such a shame to see these movies really be what Tucker is best known for.

Rush Hour is still one of the greatest movies EVER! Personally, I say the film still holds up. While I do love the first movie to death! For me, nothing out beats Rush Hour 2! That movie was a none stop ride! Fun and laughs from beginning to end! In fact, I watched that movie more with my friends and at school, everyone would quote lines from the film everytime! Rush Hour 2 hits my nostalgia vibe even harder! Rush Hour 3 was a good one too! No where as good as the first two films, but Rush Hour 3 was still a fun movie! Which is pretty hard to do. Usually in a trilogy, the third film suffers more! But surprisingly, Rush Hour 3 did a good job! Much like the Back to the Future trilogy, the Rush Hour trilogy is outstanding! They're amazing! I wouldn't mind a fourth film. But honestly, I would much rather Rush Hour be a trilogy. If you want another good movie trilogy to add to your collection, Rush Hour has you covered!!!
Man oh Man 90s HK films are so vibrant, everyone who likes Rush Hour should check them out. They just throb with life. Imagine living in a place that is going to be handed over to another country, you don't know what that is going to be like, so there is this looming aprehension. That energy was channelled into some incredible films. Too bad about Elizabeth Pena, she was super cute in this film.
A Black man, a Chinese man, and a Latina saved the day... and it wasn't preachy. it felt completely natural and not shoved in your face.. wtf happened to hollywood...?
Saw the trailer to this the night Lethal Weapon 4 came out in summer 1998 and when they said the fastest mouth in the west meets the fastest hands from the east and Jackie Chan got off that plane EVERYONE IN THE THEATER LOST THEIR MINDS, that's how you knew this film was gonna be an instant classic.

Rush Hour is a classic. Rush Hour is Red Heat of the 1990s. Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker were a good comedic duo. I've enjoyed all the Rush Hour movies. Rush Hour 3 was the only Rush Hour movie I ever watched on the big screen. Rush Hour is Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker at their best.
I adored this film as a kid, and I still enjoy coming back to it. Great video!

I loved Chris Tucker from this era with Friday and even Fifth Element, and Jackie Chan was a legend. This and Rush Hour 2 were just great films that blended genres. :)
One of my favorite buddy cop flicks along with Lethal Weapon.

Mr. Harper, I can't fully convey how much I have enjoyed watching your retrospective reviews! It's like IMDB on steroids if IMDB was extremely well researched and entertaining at the same time! Every time I watch one I learn something that makes the movies I love even more engaging and interesting. I don't know of another UA-camr who does reviews like this. Like they said in "The Spy Who Loved Me", "Nobody does it better" than Oliver Harper!

@AngryTechGuy: While Snipes would've been a nice counter to Chan, I think he would've really tried to outshine him. With Tucker, they both highlight their strengths along building chemistry onscreen.
About this being the "Lite" version of a Jackie Chan movie... All I can think of is "Less is more." Some of those Chinese martial arts movies include too much and become exhausting after awhile.
Rush Hour is an absolute comedy classic. And the sequels were just as good! Especially #2!

Now that I think of it, I don't recall watching this movie from start to finish. So many of my friends (granted, we were in high school at the time) raved about it.

I remember watching the first one with my parents as a young lad , was super fun. My parents used to love Jackie and they thought me how to love him aswell. Many years later i still rewatch it once in awhile and it still holds up.
For the past 24 years, anytime anyone has ever said the name "Chelsea" to me, I would always immediately respond with, "MAN WHO DO YOU THINK YOU KIDNAPPED? CHELSEA CLINTON?"
We need to have trigger warnings for race comedy? I pity this generation!

Jackie Chan Adventures was the first time i heard about Jackie Chan as a kid, and i impressed by his range in terms of comedic timing, and it felt very much like an animated version, of his real life antics with some supernatural elements thrown in, to make the series more interesting, and is probably one of the best animated show's I've ever seen to this day!

Another great retro review, my friend! When I saw this in the theater with a friend, Chris Tucker's "Panda Express" line had us laughing so hard for about 5 minutes that we were obviously annoying the other patrons. And I'm a huge Lalo Schifrin fan so I was happy to hear him doing another action film after what seemed like a long absence.
And yet I've only seen this first film and not the sequels, even though I like Tucker and loooove Jackie. I just remember the sequels getting such bad reviews that I guess I just tuned out of the series. But after watching this review, I noticed that HBOMAX has all 3 films currently streaming, so I may just rectify my ignorance and check them out.
Also... I had no idea Elizabeth Pena passed away! I always liked her performances. Very sad!
I haven’t seen Rush Hour 3, so it was really weird to see Roman Polanski out of nowhere 20:01 😳 can’t believe he’s in that movie. Glad I missed that one.
The Rush Hour series is my second favorite trilogy.

The third one is actually my favorite, never understood the hate for it tbh. I think the second one is actually the weakest because it's basically a rethread of the first one (the fish out of water part) with Tucker being in China rather than Jackie being in America.
The third one shows both Tucker and Jackie being skilled, rather than Tucker being "the comedic dummy" which I preferred.
I had been a Jackie Chan fan since about 1993 when Rush Hour came out. Jackie's banter with Chris Tucker was a true eye-opener, I felt a touch of pride when audiences laughed at "...how full of shit they are" and other great Chan moments here.
I didn't know that the movie was originally lacking that end fight scene until now (short though it is) that's disappointing. Like the end of Rumble in the Bronx, great action in the middle and just a chase with some stunts at the end. Just not kosher for any martial arts film.
That said, the ending of Rush Hour STILL lacks action and always feels like an anti-climax; like, why is he saving the priceless Chinese vases anyway? He's from Hong Kong, right? Is he into antiques? Perhaps they should've had him demoted to gallery attendant first. ...Or something.
I recently rewatched this movie after not having seen it since around the time it came out and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Still holds up.
Back when you could have a diverse cast without it feeling forced or political. Heroes are Latina, black, and Chinese, the captive they are trying to rescue is Chinese, and the main bad guys are Chinese and white, yet it all feels natural and makes sense to the story.

The only frustrating thing about the film score is that it isn't released in its entirety. You can tell by watching the movie that there are a lot of scores that were left out of the official soundtrack release and it pisses me off to no end, my personal favorite being the part when Lee finally revealed the true identity of Juntao.
Saw Rush Hour in the cinema on a whim and absolutely loved it. Thought Tucker and Chan had great chemistry. Funnily enough though I've never seen the sequels.

@@mr.o6240 The only MCU films that were brooding and serious were Winter Soldier, First Avenger, Infinity War and Endgame. Eternals to a degree. Every other film/show was balanced.
DC on the other hand, if you're mainly talking the Snyder-verse, the Snyder films are ALL serious and no fun. Shazam, Wonder Woman 2017 and WW84, Birds of Prey, Aquaman, The Suicide Squad 2021, the theatrical version of JL and Suicide Squad 2k16 are the only ones so far until Flash, Shazam 2, Blue Beetle, and others come out that were at least fun and enjoyable but had their dramatic moments.
I lost my virginity with my gf when we were 15 watching rush hour 2 and then proceeded to leave it on all summer long for background noise. it was already my favorite movie at the time but by the end of our relationship i knew that movie word for word lol
I just rewatched it a few weeks ago and did my own short review on TikTok. It's definitely still loads of fun, but not everything has aged well with the trilogy as a whole.

I miss movies like this. Now every big movie has to be a superhero movie and make a billion dollars. Or it’s some indie no one sees and you can either stream it or watch it at some independent place and be the only one there. There’s no inbetween

Nicely put together retrospect, it is still an entertaining film that zips buy. Very well produced. Completely agree though, it's watered down, and Jackie, is just a little old at this point in time. My personal favourite of this time period is Shanghai Noon, Yuen Biao helped out with the action and it shows.
I loved hearing how the idea for this movie came about.

Great video, I remember seeing rush hour when it first came out at cinema and loved it, but by that time I was already a big jackie chan fan, had tons of films on video like drunken master, police story's, project a, meals on wheels etc etc and subscribed to his screen power magazine. not seen 2 and 3 in a long while so I might have to invest in that us boxset and have a marathon

That Rush Hour rotten tomatoes score is abysmal. Goes to show ratings don't matter at the end of the day. Like what you like because you like it.
Kids in 90s were fans of Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal. I was kid in 2000 and 2001 and I was fan of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. In 2002 I became Bruce Lee fan, when I saw Way of the Dragon (1972) on cable tv. Everybody has different stories, right now I'm 34 yo.
The clash of cultures and racist humour is always done well. Only joke that didn't sit well with me was in no3. When a Frenchman of Chinese descent doesn't speak Chinese and said to be 'Humiliating himself'... eek
Rush Hour was definitely a breath of fresh air for the American cop buddy genre. Genuinely good fun, mixing fun Jackie Chan stunts with a fun, yet sincere performance from Chris Tucker, taking cue from early 80s Eddie Murphy.
The problem with the second one is that it is let down by Tucker being way too OTT. He’s not a quick witted detective in the second film, as much as being a hyperactive joke machine. And that sadly detracts compared with the first film, where he plays an convincingly cocksure character.
(Haven’t seen Rush Hour 3.)

I personally found the Rush Hour series to be one of the best trilogies in film history.
I don't mind Rush Hour films. Yes, it is watered down probably to the Hollywood politics when you see most of Jackie Chan films but as a Hollywood film, it is entertaining. As for humour if anyone doesn't like then don't watch it plain and simple.
Still one of my all time favourite movies and one of Jackie Chans best.
I hope Oliver Harper does a retrospective on another great Jackie Chan American film, Shanghai Noon.

I can't tell you how many times i've seen this movie, i know every scene and every word by heart, lol. I grew up on the Rush Hour movies man, especially 1 and 2. They are classics in my eyes.....the third one not so much.

Also, when that Marvel martial arts movie came out ("Shang Chi", I think it was called), the star of that movie acted as if he was the first Asian leading man in an American movie. It was ridiculous.
