Fitting aftermarket wheels on a 300 Series Landcruiser. Can it be done!?

  • We briefly had the opportunity to see if the new Toyota Landcruiser 300 Series would take on a set of 17" aftermarket wheels. The results were interesting.
    Disclaimer: We wish we had the vehicle longer for a much more in depth analysis but this is what we found out in such a short amount of time!
    Tyre Review hopes you found this useful and informative. Make sure you get the facts and info before making aftermarket wheel purchases for your 300 Series Landcruiser.
    Cheers,

    For future commenters, unfortunately we only had about 30 minutes with the car, and weren't allowed to go much further than we did, due to the dealership being keen to not have us fiddle with the car too much. We'll get another 300 and go a bit deeper on it soon!

    Great to see you guys are test fitting after-market tires/wheels to the 300. I have a question if you guys could cover in your next shoot. What size diameter tire can the spare wheel well accommodate, and will departure angle reduce if wider tires are fitted?

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  2 роки тому

      That's a very valid point. Chris has one on order, so whenever they deliver it, hopefully sometime within the next four years, I'll have a squiz and see what'll fit up there. The 200 ones definitely hang low, even with the stock size, so it'll be interesting to see what the 300 is like once you get a 285+ into the wheel well 👍

    Very interesting video. Shame it wasn’t possible to test rubbing while at full turn.
    Also, with the gap that small between the caliper and the wheel, it makes me wonder if pebbles will be likely to get trapped in the gap…

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, in an offroad situation, you're likely to get crap, even just mud, in there and eventually bugger the wheel. Probably 18" minimum, really, or for street use only with 17's, unfortunately.

    So Toyota are now using 14mm wheel studs on 6 stud wheels while everyone else uses 12mm.
    Does that mean the wheel nuts will not fit properly when you are using mags that were made for the smaller 12mm nuts?

    My biggest gripe with the LC300 besides the tailgate is the skinny tires 265 wide for a SUV this large looks ridiculous.
    At the very least they should kept the 285 wide like the LC200
    I'm assuming they did it for fuel economy reasons

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, the tailgate is sad - nowhere to put your stuff anymore!
      Totally the 265s are for economy, but it also probably makes the car a lot more tractable for test drives too. I'm sure they were worried about the difference between the old motor and the new one, and smaller tyres (less rotating mass) means that the vehicle will drive amazingly in the first instance, particularly in comparison to a 300 with heavier AT 285s on it.
      We did an acceleration run between this 300 and Chris' 200 with 35s on it, and the 300 blew the doors off the 200. It was crazy. Still, a whole bunch less tyre going on.

    Taking off the standard bin lids is surely going to have to be a must. Interesting the standard tyre that you just pulled off the car looks not that wide, what tyre size is that?

    • @TyreReviewVideos

      They've stepped down a size for this new model, and it's a bit odd. From what I understand, the GX comes with a 245/75 R17, the VX/GR/Sahara with 265/65 R18, and the Sahara ZX with 265/55 R20. Aftermarket wheels are a must on most cars, which helps the industry, like you say!

      @@TyreReviewVideos its actually funny I am historically an early adopter, yet with this new LC 300 I am far from there yet. And yet I know how good Toyota are with the landcruiser as a generational vehicle. I am not sure if it's all the tech that puts me off, and I am such a fan of the existing V8, but as someone that ordered one before all the specs were released (gr sport) only to be told, I now have to wait 12 to 18 months for delivery, has sort of left me with..... Hi, about to order 300 series GX model. However, now concerned regarding comment below about smaller brake pads on GX. Also not happy with the thinner rims/tyres 245/75R17 on the GX ( & also not happy with the larger diameter 18 “ rims on the GXL). I would like more common size rims/tyres eg 265/65R17 so that easier to get a replacement tyre up north WA, eg in Derby. I'm keen to ensure that 265/65R17 will fit the GX prior to placing order. Any advice would be welcome on how I can verify this before placing the order?

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  2 роки тому

      Hi LK, sounds like you're in a bit of a tough pickle. The smaller brakes on the GX means you can run 17's, so you're more likely to get the more common tyre size, however it means you get stuck with the smaller brakes. Based on the fact that they're released with 17" rims there shouldn't be a problem with fitting most other 17s to it, provided you don't go too crazy with offset.
      The other consideration is that the 265/65R17 are actually about 2.88% smaller in diameter than the OE size for the GX, so you're further cheating yourself there, however they'll definitely fit.. It might be worth considering going to a 265/70R17 which is 0.44% bigger than OE, or even waiting till you get it, then seeing if you can fit a 285/70R17 which will be bigger again. The only reason I say to fit it afterwards is because there's a risk it might foul on something as it's a fair bit bigger - almost 4% bigger at 830.8mm diameter rather than 799.3mm. Good luck!

    • @warboyrb
      @warboyrb 2 роки тому +1

      On GX I'd be shocked if the 265/70 does not fit on stock suspension - its what Prados regularly run. Beauty of starting with the 245/75 on a GX is that, by law in some states, you can go up to 295/70 R17 - to get that UP-TO-50mm tyre diameter lift. Would most likely need a lift kit then, or even upper control arms, to avoid scrubbing. Worth exploring options.

    • @TyreReviewVideos
      @TyreReviewVideos  2 роки тому +2

      For some it's more about the height of the tyre you can get. If you go down an inch, then you get half an inch more tyre between the ground and the rim, which is good for off roading and potential ride comfort. It's also becoming a bit of a fad out of the US to run as small a rim size as you can, to get a larger amount of tyre... I guess it's a thing?
