One Lamborghini V12 goes in as Harry's is ready to come out | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

- Fresh from the success of the last video featuring two Lamborghini Countach, one of course belonging to Harry Metcalfe, it's high time for another workshop catch-up to see where those two cars are up to along with a host of other fine examples currently occupying the workshop.
Iain begins with the black Countach from the US, outlining what's been discovered about the fuel systems and catching up with Pete about the electrical/ ignition systems, both of which have conspired to prevent the car from firing up. From there we move on to the Citroën SM that featured a few episodes ago to see the fabulous work that Craig has done restoring the seats, along with a repair for the window mechanisms that threw up a surprise connection to an Italian icon!
We then move on to the 350GT, the 5th-ever production Lamborghini that is on the home stretch of its restoration, before catching up with Craig to discuss his work on that car along with the Citroën SM. And Craig has obviously been a busy-bee because more of his work features in the next subject, the fibreglass 308 that has featured in previous catch-ups and whose chassis is happily now of a much sturdier standing than when it arrived!
On the day of filming, a V12 lovingly rebuilt in-house is ready to be refitted into a Lamborghini Espada. This provides a nice contrast to the final preparation work for Harry's Countach ready for the engine and gearbox to come out.
00:00 - Introduction
00:39 - Black Countach Fuel System
01:38 - Black Countach Ignition System with Pete
05:26 - Citroën SM Interior Restoration
07:28 - Lamborghini 350GT Restoration
08:30 - 350GT Interior with Craig
10:22 - Fibreglass Ferrari 308 Restoration
11:53 - Lamborghini Espada V12 Engine Refit
13:45 - Harry's Countach

Soft spoken, unassuming, gentle but still playfully sharp, vast knowledge and experience which still hasn’t turned into cockiness, absolute passion about his work and great willingness to teach others, in one word these videos are - therapeutic beyond measure. Thank you!
I wanted to comment on the video but wasn’t too sure how to word it. You summed it up beautifully 👍
@@Dnlwsr90 Rainer Kriisk, totally agree. A lovely bloke.
A wonderful adventure into Tyrrell's workshop on a Sunday afternoon. Such a pleasant break from following world events. Soon we'll have another wonderful video from Harry.
Harry's vid is out, it won't disappoint...
When Iain says "I recognise that window winder gear wheel in the SM from the headlight mechanism of a Muira..." you know this is the absolute top level of classic car knowledge. If anyone watching this goes on Mastermind and Iain is there doing his specialised subject, just give up and shake the hand of the winner...!
Reminds me of a Chasing Classic Cars episode where Wayne Carini needed a new pop up headlight mechanism for a Ferrari Daytona and the part number looked like a Porsche number. He went outside, found a Porsche 914, verified the number and removed that unit in order to get the Ferrari completed.
Love the work on the 3500GT. I knew a wonderful elderly gentleman, now deceased (the quintessential Argentinian playboy), who told me a fascinating story that relates to those cars. He had one, and when he returned the car to the factory for a service, he confronted Ferrucio and told him he, Ferrucio, wasn't a gentleman. Asked why, he said that the passengers door had no key lock, which meant he couldn't open the door for his female companion without having to get in his side and reach across to open the door. Ferrucio called his factory manager over and said that from now on, all cars were to have passenger door key entry. Just another part of the story.
Keep featuring your workers and ace mechanics, Tyrrell. Not everyone realizes how many talented people it takes to run a shop like this!
Hats of to Craig on such craftsmanship, as restorers we always wish we could have the talents to finish off tired interiors, Craigs stitching is stunning.
The level of craftsmanship and knowledge at Tyrell’s is second to none!!!
Was that wiring the _new_ wiring in the Countach?! It looked shocking..
@@conflagrationTuesday Haha! Yes, an improved rats nest, following the same routes but with better connectors.
What a stupid place to put electrics (originally), right under a vent, where even the rain gets in. It needs a better umbrella!
"drive it like Harry", "explain it like Iain"
Another classic from Tyrrell's Classic workshop, thank you
Just imagine being so extremely well-versed in 70s European exotica that you, by sight alone, recognise a particular obscure gear from one rare car's window mechanism being identical to one found in another even rarer car's headlight mechanism. My hat, once again, is off to you Iain.
0:23 "Slightly noisy gearbox"-->Understatement of the year...
How did Iain manage to say that with an (almost) straight face?
@@18robsmith He turned his face back, maybe he's a better actor than we presume ;-)
Ian's appreciation of his workshop staff really speaks volumes of the man..
I believe it's fair to say that we're all very fortunate to get to see the work that gets done at Tyrrell's shop. As he said, it's really not his core business making videos and he probably doesn't need the advertising given the reputation that he already has.
Simply wonderful. The knowledge and craftsmanship of your guys is exemplary. These videos are my Sunday evening staple while I cook our Sunday roast.
Hi ,I agree totally , finishing off with a bucket of KFC .
This is my Monday morning staple - a mug of Yorkshire 'Proper Strong' at my elbow and the Australian sun beating in. It's a good life 🙂
Same here in Denmark.
Same here in Nevada, USA!
The best part of watching these, is realizing that ALL the cars shown here, are ones that get driven, and not just trailer queens bought for their investment value.
Great episode again. Love watching this. Since the Countach has got the Bosch K-Jetronic injection system you might consider the 1970s trick of adding two stroke oil once or twice a year (0,5 to 1 litre of oil on one full tank will do). It works wonders in K-Jet cars that don't do a lot of miles, since it lubricates the tiny components in the injectors, fuel distributor and fuel pump. This was a standard procedure in Mercedes Benz and other brand's dealers back then. Full synthetic scooter oil works best since it doesn't smoke and has useful cleaning additives.
Perfect timing, just sat down. Guess I’m here for the next 15 mins.
Sunday evenings are usually Tyrrell's Classic workshop and Harry's Garage. Awesome.
Battery not connected but the interior light is on! The SM interior seems to be the anthesis of most 70's black vinyl interiors. Very nice indeed.
Aaah yes, the deliberate mistake….. wondered who’d spot that first……
@@iain_tyrrell well done for owning up to that…👍
I have been involved in vintage European sports cars for over forty years and really enjoy watching someone knowledgeable share his experiences. I realize the videos are extra work but please continue.
Never have I enjoyed watching videos as much as these. The knowledge, the craftsmanship, the subjects, the presentation are all absolutely stunning, a complete joy to behold. Thank you so much.
Off topic, but watch these videos and reflect on Iain's management style. Totally respectful, gives everything to his team, and his guys feel free to chat back. The team have total respect for him.
That you DO the videos as an addon to your normal Business is what makes them so special!!! Keep doing them the way you do please. I can do without roadtests... This peak into such a special working garage is what I am here for!
It's the right ignition, just not necessarily in the right order. Eric would be proud.
lol , i caught that one as well
Thanks to you Iain, this is the only way that we mere mortals will ever see the inner workings of such fantastic cars....
We are very grateful!!
Best car channel on UA-cam!
You are right. Best car channel on UA-cam and also better than any carshows on the TV-networks.... :-D
It's understood that videos aren't your core business, BUT PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING! These are excellent.
Thank you for continuing to slot these videos into your busy work days. I look forward to and very much enjoy every single one!
Strange!! Every time I watch one of our videos Iain, I just feel the World is still a wonderful place to be. The knowledge, the people and of course the cars move me to another level of happiness and enjoyment. Thank you so much for bringing me such joy.
Cheers, Bob
those sm seats are incredible. the only thing interesting about modern seats is the colour of the stitching, while those are works of art.
it's such a pleasure to be shown around this place 😍
I was impressed by how well the 350GT looked going from burgundy to Fiat blue. It really does suit that car well.
I love this 'catch-up' format. It's wonderful to see all the different cars being worked on in one episode.
I feel like I am transported to a wonderland of automobiles when Tyrrell's Classic Workshop videos are posted and watched. Such iconic and magical cars from a time when design, engineering and craftsmanship were in their golden age. Iain and his band of merry crafts persons are a absolute treasure.
Love these videos, Ian. You have such a great style. It's like your friendly local garage, but with a person deeply confident and able to work on any car in the world!
Love these videos so much. I love how they aren't edited and fluffed up. They are just so natural and human, the cars are superb and the workmanship is a joy to watch. And it's such an amazing insight into a realm I will never have the pleasure of experiencing. Thanks for bringing it to everyone. Please keep making these videos.
Fantastic videos. So nice to watch happy artisans going about their business in their natural habitat. Thanks Mr T!
A great mix of catch ups - the leather work in the SM was top notch. Love the Islero.
Just like the other fantastic comments here, exemplary video of super rare and cool cars, being taken care of by the highest of standards, all thanks to Harry for getting Ian into this world of videos on UA-cam for the masses to see. I our world of sad things this is so much fun to watch. Many thanks
This is slowly becoming my favorite YT channel! What a treat. TY all! Cheers/B
There are some old engines which are really a work of art and the Lamborghini V12 certainly is one of them.
The SM’s interior is class 👌🏻😎
Not only these video's are spot on in terms of content, but as a Dutch guy I enjoy Iain' British accent so much too
I said it a couple of videos ago as well.
The way he speaks English is just splendid.
Greetz from Germany.
English.
@@dancarter482
You think so?
Like in the USA, there are more than just one sort of English in England also.
@@docskate4312 Oh, so true! Amazing for such a small island, imagine if it was similar in one of the States, admitedly they also have native and immigrant languages, but so does the UK! English, Welsh, Cornish, Gaelic...
@@docskate4312 No matter what the accent, one either speaks English correctly or one does not.
What a lovely 15 minutes, every video really is a treat. Iain comes across as really nice guy. Going to work must be like playing with toys. Brilliant 👍
The "small" engine hoist reminded me of the "small" crane at Rosyth dockyard, that can be seen for miles around 😂
That light blue Miura melts my heart.
Full credit to you Iain for creating an enjoyable environment to work in , it show's with how you connect pleasantly with your staff, and that's how you get the best results.
A Tyrell's Workshop video after dinner is a perfect end to a long weekend.
Keep up the good work, Iain
When watching your videos, I am struck by the authenticity of both the knowledge being shared and the work being done. Not things I typically associate with full-time UA-camrs. Thank you for providing us a way to take in the real in-depth beauty of not just the automobiles, but also the highly skilled work being done all of you there at the workshop. Also, it's nice to be reminded that these gorgeous cars had interiors to match!
Greetings from Northern California. At age 72, Tyrrell's Classic Workshop is my only UA-cam subscription. Outstanding.
Great video, as always. Graig's work on the Citroën is impressive indeed.
I really appreciate the interior trimming portions of these videos. Using the correct materials and applying them properly makes or breaks a restoration imo. You guys nail it and again, its something that is often overlooked in restoration videos.
Wonderful to see some real craftsmen at work,
your 40 years of experience exudes empathy for the engines!
Tyrell is unintentionally hilarious! what a find.
Perhaps the best car channel on you tube, certainly better than anything on TV. IMO.
Love the interactions. It's how gentlemen talk to each other.
I want to be 16 again be an apprentice and work for Iain Tyrell. Love everything about what you do, how you do it and why you do it. I’ve said it before, there are multiple YT videos for just about everything. You won’t find many l like Iain’s
Soothing blue Lamborghini absolutely beautiful 🇺🇸
One of the things I like is how we get to meet the craftspeople who work on these cars. Nice to see a round-up of what's in the shop, and the stories behind them
Always great to hear from you Iain. More please.
I love seeing a car surgeon working on beautiful cars!!!
Every time I see the red Countach I hear that transmission noise in my head.
Pete is there because Pete is worth his weight in gold😁 Love seeing these nightmare classics that are beautiful but need the right people and the right size wallet to keep them go. That 308 would give you the fear…..
I've only been watching this channel for a short time (since Rover SD1 Vitesse) but just adore it! No music, no filler, no gimmicks - just the things that you want to see. It makes me regret the last 30yrs of my life in a way as I always wanted to be a car mechanic for marques such as these but that never happened. I live that life vicariously now though these videos. Thankyou so much for making them... :o)
so many incredible cars in one video! As you point out, these videos give access to the hidden side of these beautiful machines which is the dedicated time and effort that goes in to keeping them ship shape for us to see on the road and at shows... and its no small feat! Great work as ever - keep up the good work!
The sheer level of craftsmanship and automotive knowledge in that garage is simply mind-boggling. What an amazing crew under that one roof! Just to sort out the clusterf**k of wiring on the US Countach is a remarkable feat in and of itself. Hats off to you blokes!
Awesome as ever! Love the look into your world Iain and the beautiful cars you get to work on. What a great team you have and love the way you all get on so well. Thank you for this ❤️
Think I might have said this before but 'Thank You' Iain for taking the time out of your busy workshop to make these video's. To a petrolhead like me, they are simply fascinating!
Hear hear!
"I concur". Who gets that?
@@stpfs9281 If you mean 'I agree', then, yes I do. If you mean you deceive dogs, well, good luck

@@alexbrown1995 No, it was a reference to another video. Lots of comments with that phrase, for support.
Thanks so much for these videos. I stopped by because of Harry's video but stayed for knowledge, craftsmanship, and lovely presentation. The 350GT is a peach!
"I made a mistake" - something one really does not hear often enough. Nice to see that Espada engine go back in :)
People cannot really grasp the expense that is involved using these precious leathers and woolen carpets, both of which are somewhat rare bits into and of themselves. They deserve the best hands from the finest craftsmen to turn them into interior parts...the paint, paint mat hing, steel and aluminum fabricating, the body work in metal and fiberglass...all just WOW-WOW-WOW!!!
- my hat's off to ALL OF THESE ANAZING GUYS!!!
Now THAT is an engine hoist. Fantastic stuff again. Just love the standard of workmanship on show. I’d love some of those made-to-measure Wilton mats with Connolly hide piping.
What a great idea to show the inner workings and alchemy of a classic car workshop. I’m a rubbish have a go type but you make what you do understandable. You are such a talented team. Well done !!! Pete 🇬🇧
your shop is cracking on as usual..your man of the hides is a very interesting study..one can easily overlook what he is up to, but i know what he is doing..and it is extraordinary!
The patina on the black Lambo is stunning.
Love the colour of the "5th ever" Lambo! 👍
That 350GT is exquisite. I love the colour and can't wait to see you drive it.
Good evening Iain . As always , a superb presentation of all that is happening at Tyrrells Classic Workshop . You have a small but great team of artisans . And as you allude to , we would never have been graced with these video's a few years ago . I would have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my passion and knowledge but alas (or thankfully !) I couldn't . Thankyou lain .
Thank you John! It’s never too late…🤔
It's so good to see skills kept alive with these cars.
Ian, your videos are rapidly becoming my favourite UA-cam videos.
Absolute wealth of knowledge and craftmanship all in one workshop.
I love the shop walk through format. Well done Iain!
It just makes my day when I realise that there's a new Tyrrell's Classic Workshop video. Always interesting and entertaining. Thanks.
Now these are the videos I love most! The nitty gritty details are fascinating, especially on these cars!
The interior of the XM looks stunning, what a transformation, a very talented craftsman. It's a fabulous looking car.
*SM
Yeah, SM. The XM is a pretty cool car in my opinion but it's miles away from being as cool and gorgeous as the SM.
@@AxLWake yeah, I meant SM, fat fingers!
Dude, you could have paid tours in your shop. That would be something I’d cross the pond for.
im stunned at the praise you give your workers ,outstanding ,thats how an employer should treat all hes excellent staff who are able to put out such incredible work and as for your trimmer who did the interior on that DS ,he should be given a raise a medal a statue out front, for hes skill set is beautiful ,much respect from Australia
These videos are absolutely brilliant! It is so interesting to get a glimpse of what is underneath the covers of these dream machines. Thank you so much for making this content, really enjoying this channel.
i always notice how kind the boss is to his employees. seems like a really nice play to work.
Always fascinating to see what's going on in the workshop. Thanks for sharing with us Iain and all of your team. Much appreciated.
Just fabulous as always Iain. So many brilliant projects on the go. And great to see some old beauties being lovingly restored so they can continue to be enjoyed on the roads for many years to come. Keep these videos coming please! Thank you. Michael
Artisans, almost magicians. Amazing group of talent and craftsmen.
A complete natural in front of the camera and so so informative.
I do love when a tyrells or harrys notification comes up,two great videos to watch on a sunday 👍👍
I am always excited when I see and other Tyrrell's Workshop posted. I watch a number of channels like this. When I see someone else, generally American, working on cars like these, I cringe a little knowing how Iain's shop would have handled it.
He currently has two of my favorite/dream cars in the colors I love - the green SM and the rose Espada.
love it, love it, love it. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
It's so satisfying to watch these great cars being so beautifully restored!
Is there a break for tea and hobnobs? That Lambo 350 in the Fiat silver is off the hook. The dash is omg retro. Thanks for showing it. A real treat.
Thanks so much! This US (rural Washington State rally country) subscriber loves every minute of your content.
Its such a pleasure watching these videos. I'm sure Ian could do a half hour video on a Citroen 2CV and make it fascinating.
One of my best friends was the original owner of that 308GTB (with that reg plate too)... bought new back in the 1970s . He also raced a Formula 5000. I had the pleasure of riding in the Ferrari to pubs and clubs, on many occasions. RIP my friend.
Iain, I'd love to see more technical content. The diagnosis, teardown and rebuild of Harry's gearbox, for example. I love the content, but also yearn for some more real in-depth, technical content. I know you've got the technical knowledge and the ability to relay it in your videos. Love the channel! Keep it up!
