I work at an Autobody shop and it is actually common for headliners to be installed before the windshield. When we remove a headliner, we have to first take the front or rear glass out. The headliner has to slide out from somewhere.
Depends. My 1980 Lancia Gamma needed a headliner replacement but the windscreen and rear glass are glued in place, like many Italian cars from the 70s. Removing the glass means breaking it... had to get creative!
@@dm5374 I did that on my 204 lately. I needed new seals for the windshields (the original was from 72'). With shipping (a very complex one and hard to find parts) - around 200$ for the rear seal and around 80$ for the front seal. The windscreen stayed intact. The upholester charged 1200NIS (around 350$) for the headliner and pillars, and the glazier charged another 800 nis (around 220$) I made a video about that on my Hebrew channel @knufia
Glad you enjoy it, Doug. I think it will be fairly reliable. The problem isn't the reliability of maintained properly, the problem is that all the repair costs are about x5 or x10 of a normal car. But if you've budgeted it, then you're getting what you want and you'll be very happy with it.
Honestly the entire transmission job cost isn't nearly as bad as I would have suspected all things considered. With how vintage, low production, and just genuinely rare a countach is, I feel like any other service shop would have easily slapped $10k labor premiums on that job.
@slowery43 no. This is based upon the previous things I mentioned on top of the fact that the last service was 20 years ago as he mentioned. Why do people like you exist exactly?
Thanks for the itemized recap. I have an older 911, and yes - I’ve had the occasional five-figure service bill because it’s an old car. Ultra-reliable, but you can either replace ancient fuel and oil lines now or wait for them to fail. It’s a privilege to drive a classic sports car, and you have to be at peace with the costs.
Ouch! Thanks for sharing. If I had to choose just 3 exotic cars, I'd pick the exact same ones - congrats! Especially the Porsche, that v10 makes a glorious noise.
As a person that lives in Columbus Ohio the most crazy thing about that shops location is the fact that it’s on Morse Road. Hahahaha. Anyone that knows Columbus Ohio knows what I’m talking about. I would expect like Dublin Ohio or Marysville maybe. But Morse rd in Columbus is definitely not somewhere I would love to send my Lamborghini. But that’s coming from someone that has never even sat in a Lamborghini. I’m just glad they can do quality work and keep everyone’s cars running and safe.
Presumably, pull-the-engine service on that car is akin to a timing belt on a Land Cruiser, or head gaskets on nearly every vehicle: The disassembly labor is so extensive -- and expensive -- that you replace EVERY CONSUMABLE YOU PASS on the way back out.
First congratulations on your new edition to your family and I watch your reviews religiously..Second have you ever reviewed a Vector M12?? If so please let me know so I can go back in your history or if not will you review one at anytime??
You bought the car i had on a poster in my room growing up. Same color and everything. If I was rich, I would be doing the same thing you are Doug. Congrats on your successes!
I just bought a stock Hudson and drove it 800 miles to my home. I found out it needs a coil and some radiator hoses and a new bulb for the passenger side courtesy light. It was an epic drive, some of it over gravel and rough roads. The car cost about a seventh of the Countach service.
The thing that really makes that Countach extra special, is it is a head turning icon. It might not be the most aerodynamic, it might not be the fastest or the hardest cornering or the best braking but everybody wants to look at it everybody wants to see it everybody wants to ride in it and for anybody born before 1985 they want one. Well... most Car Guys anyway.
I bought a grand national about 5 years ago. Dream car of mine. Needed a total brake overhall, body mounts, electrical work, a lot of other things. You know what, love that car. It's a joy to drive.
$2k for a valve adjustment. Exotic or not, this isn't a complicated engine, it's spacers, rocker arms, and camshafts. It's probably less than a 2 hour job. Rebuilding 6 carbs for $2k? It's a $30 gasket kit and an hour of labor. Even granted that there's 6 of them, that's egregious. On that note - $400 for 12 new carburetor jets? Jets for Weber DCOE's run about $7 each and take probably 1 minute to swap each out, AND YOU'RE ALREADY BILLING FOR THE CARB REBUILD. They are ripping you off there. 12 spark plug - again, probably $5 a pop and a minute to change each since they are so easily accessible. $4k for a new muffler because it has "some rust" on it. It's called rust neutralizer then reseal... How quickly is rust going to advance on a car that basically never gets wet? I get wanting replacement parts while you can get them though, so fair enough I guess. $800 for transmission mounts? They already has the engine out. It's a very very straightforward job with the engines and transmission out of the way, and the parts are probably a couple hundred bucks. Why would they need replaced anyway? There is really good money to be made being a mechanic to the wealthy! I do get that there is value is being able to state "car was serviced by _____, a respected expert" though. It adds value when selling down the road. Still though, yikes, just yikes...
I remember back in the day when I lived in Columbus , Ohio, I would drive through Evans parking lot to see what they were working on that day. It's a cool shop!
Some of the prices Doug named were absolutely outrageous, especially considering the engine was already out. Absolutely ripped off and I won't be convinced otherwise.
Although it’s an expensive and rare car, it’s still just a car. And at the end of the day these older cars are pretty simple. It really comes down to a lot of people with a lot of money only buying from people who cater to other people with a lot of money (“EVERYONE with a vintage Lambo uses them”). I’ve known some very, very wealthy people (far wealthier than Doug) and THIS is how they ALL operate. Companies like Evans are in the club and they milk it (as I would if I were them).
@@wmansir The car has a combination sump for both the transmission and engine, which needs 4.5 gallons of oil. With a premium Italian synthetic like Agip ENI at $18.95 per liter, that ends up being more than $330 just for the oil if you were doing it yourself.
@@richsimpson450 yeah, I think part of the problem is if you find someone truly qualified to work on these cars you get the privilege of paying whatever number they name.
@@richsimpson450 wow, if you truly believe that you know absolutely zero about cars. The countach is NOT "just a car" insofar as the SR71 blackbird is just a plane. I love people like you: "$600 for an oil change is a rip off" you're not paying for the time it took to do it, you're paying for the 40 yrs of experience it takes to do it RIGHT. BTW: $27000 for the first oil change in a bugatti veyron. Stick to driving your chevy malibu or civic with a fart can.
That car is incredible and I'm glad you spent whatever it takes to keep it ship shape. If you keep hold of that car for another 10 or 15 years then it's almost guaranteed that it will be worth far more than your initial investment and this $50,000 service. The fact that the same guy owned it for 35 years from new, then the fact that "Doug DeMuro" bought it, then it was taken to be serviced at basically the best possible place in the US it could be taken, that did the last service 19 years prior, with so much spent on the car having stuff done that didn't even need to be done to preserve it. This is the #1 "bedroom poster" car of all time and I think it will be for many decades to come. I'm just glad you're preserving it Doug. The only thing is, I don't like white cars 😂Not that it would matter much I guess, assuming it's the original colour. How many of these must be left now and in this condition it's going to be very rare, especially in 10 or 15 years. Look back at how cars like this have shot up in value, it's only going to continue. One of the most special cars ever made and maybe the #1 most noticeable and head turning car ever made.

I might need to call Better Health to understand how you spend 6k to ship your car to Ohio for a muffler and Transmission service. Really there’s no shop in Southern California that could do it? Really?
Similar experience with a Mercedes SL500. Paid a fortune for service at a good shop. Then had a recurring issue with that crazy Mercedes Active Body Control system. Paid $2000 for a repair on it and got the warning light back in a couple of months. Fast forward, I extensively researched on yt and chat rooms, Did the repair myself...three years and counting and still operates perfectly. All work on that car is done by yours truly now and love every bit of it. Car runs great!
$50k seems like a lot until you realize that this is a resto of basically a late 70s spaceship. Updating it even marginally and keeping it running is a monumental feat of engineering. The work that Leno puts into his fleet is way more. Good on you for keeping this icon on the road.

The pic of the transmission gears out for service, did I just see “CAPT DOUG” on the tag there??? 😂😂😂
I work at an Autobody shop and it is actually common for headliners to be installed before the windshield. When we remove a headliner, we have to first take the front or rear glass out. The headliner has to slide out from somewhere.
And a total of $2100 without removing the windshield is anything that makes sense? Even if its a countach...
only if its made from crocodile leather..@@DIY-Mechanic
The upholester charged 1200NIS (around 350$) for the headliner and pillars, and the glazier charged another 800 nis (around 220$)
I made a video about that on my Hebrew channel @knufia
I changed the transmission oil and filters on my Case farm tractor, (NOT a big one). It cost $420 for materials doing the work myself.
Glad you enjoy it, Doug. I think it will be fairly reliable. The problem isn't the reliability of maintained properly, the problem is that all the repair costs are about x5 or x10 of a normal car. But if you've budgeted it, then you're getting what you want and you'll be very happy with it.
I understand why Doug sold his Toyota and defender now
the defender alone couldve payed for all of this it sold for almost 100k. he sold the land cruiser bc of unreliability very ironic
He has millions of dollars, genius. He's not strapped for cash.
@@MikeKayKdid you ask him?
@@vika0194 Yes
@@CarQuizzical No you cant be for real, 100k? Was there anything special about that Defender?
$50k is pocket change for a man like Doug
True LOL
But he’ll act like it’s the end of the world
Kinda like Mat Watson from Carwow paying almost £4,000 to fix his '07 Cayenne Turbo. That money is nothing to him because he has a 992 GT3RS.
I'm sure he got free work (or at least heavily discounted) just to say their name so many times during this video.
Nah. He's done very well but he's not a billionaire.
Honestly the entire transmission job cost isn't nearly as bad as I would have suspected all things considered. With how vintage, low production, and just genuinely rare a countach is, I feel like any other service shop would have easily slapped $10k labor premiums on that job.
and this is based upon all those years you've never owned any vintage sports car?
@slowery43 no. This is based upon the previous things I mentioned on top of the fact that the last service was 20 years ago as he mentioned. Why do people like you exist exactly?
Doug, pay Iain Tyrrell to come over with his tuning hose , ask Harry if he knows his Lambos🇬🇧
My 1997 FIAT Cinquecento 899 cc 120 $ car still runs and is never maintananced by a garage. Just oil refill and fresh oil filters do the job.
I don't have mental energy to add another $500,000 car to my collection. Poor Doug.
hahahaha
Thanks for the itemized recap. I have an older 911, and yes - I’ve had the occasional five-figure service bill because it’s an old car. Ultra-reliable, but you can either replace ancient fuel and oil lines now or wait for them to fail. It’s a privilege to drive a classic sports car, and you have to be at peace with the costs.
Nice, but “ultra reliable” will never entail 5 figure service bills. NEVER.

Those last few minutes of the "I'm not getting any more cars" speech is a complete lie for the benefit of Doug's marriage. Smart man.
From a poster hanging on your wall as a kid, to sitting in your garage. Yet another self-made American success story.
Yes the 0.0001%
Presumably, pull-the-engine service on that car is akin to a timing belt on a Land Cruiser, or head gaskets on nearly every vehicle:
The disassembly labor is so extensive -- and expensive -- that you replace EVERY CONSUMABLE YOU PASS on the way back out.
Mental health? Nah, I think I'll watch a rich guy talk about his car.
First congratulations on your new edition to your family and I watch your reviews religiously..Second have you ever reviewed a Vector M12?? If so please let me know so I can go back in your history or if not will you review one at anytime??
Thank you for your transparency Doug. Please keep your down to earth style. Appreciate your love for cars.
"How much for the service?"
"Audi R8?"
"No, the service for the Countach."
"Yes, that will cost 1 Audi R8."
find a nice r8 for 50k please
sad that you think you're funny
@@CarQuizzical Where I live, a nice but high milage R-tronic is below $50k. How much are they where you are? 🤔
Could have told you that new domelight was gonna set you back.
I just spent $800 on the 30K miles maintenance on my $50K car, so I completely relate.
@2011blueman I did 3k on my suspension. Totally relatable.
I have to give Doug EXTRA respect. He has three supercars, and they ARE ALL MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
I bought a grand national about 5 years ago. Dream car of mine. Needed a total brake overhall, body mounts, electrical work, a lot of other things. You know what, love that car. It's a joy to drive.
You told told the mechanic you had $50,000 to spend. That's how the repair magically hit that amount. 😅
It's the price of driving awesomeness 💪 .... have a great day brother.
Still though, yikes, just yikes...
its insane
Yeah all the value is just in showing the shop name on the paperwork and the buyer instantly knows who they are, instead of Joe Shmoe down the street.
Happy Easter Doug
15:03 All until Doug gets a crazy good deal on a speed tail 🤪 but anyways awesome vid and thanks for the update

Some of the prices Doug named were absolutely outrageous, especially considering the engine was already out. Absolutely ripped off and I won't be convinced otherwise.
I don't know about ripped off, but they certainly charged a premium. $600 for an oil change when they are already pulling the engine, sure.
Doug has to buy cars in the same color as the marketing materials but can't understand retro-styled tires 😆
The first supercar I fell in love with in my life as a kid. Happy rides, Doug.
Good choice in Evans.. He did my countach almost 15 yrs ago... Its been trouble free ever since.

10:45 wait you can still get the old R22? Or has it been converted to the new refrigerant.
$50k seems like a lot until you realize that this is a resto of basically a late 70s spaceship. Updating it even marginally and keeping it running is a monumental feat of engineering. The work that Leno puts into his fleet is way more. Good on you for keeping this icon on the road.
Great Video. Really well produced. The logic and reasoning behind that current lineup makes absolutely perfect sense. But please do a road trip with all three of these cars at different times. Would love to know more about the experience.
