I work at an elementary school as a sub. Every morning these kids are served some combination of yogurt, muffins, biscuits, fruit juice and fruit cups, courtesy of the school district. They load the kids up with processed sugar and then expect them to "sit down and be quiet!" It's bordering on criminal.
So true!!!! I stopped giving my kids school lunch and breakfast because that’s when we started having weight and health issues. I make them home lunch now.
I don’t know where your school is but my Principal is allowing the kids to order Uber eats and door dash to deliver.. McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks are the orders of choice!!
Ive lost 45 lbs in the last 10 months by cutting out sugar. Everything this lady says is on point. It will definitely change your life and not as hard as some may think. Baby steps
I was once at a social gathering where many sugar-filled treats were present. A lady acquaintance, seeing my obvious struggle against indulging said something that's always stuck with me.: "It helps if you don't look at it like it's real food."
Great quote. The Doctor in the movie “The Perfect Human Diet” calls it “human food and non-human food”. That helped me. You wouldn’t give a dog cake or cinnamon rolls, only meat because that is the food their species should eat. Yet people do it to themselves (self included…though I try not to, and succeed most of the time.)
Quiting sugar , eating healthy and training is hard. Eating sugar , being over weight and sick is hard. Choose your hard. You can do it health warrior ! (I'm trying)
I'm off sugar completely and I feel great. Sweets don't even register as food in my mind anymore. I have no appetite for sugar at all. Long live beta cells!
Isnt it strange how you go to the supermarket and at least half the store is all stuff you won't touch anymore :) but it's actually really easy once you get used to it
Mark Withers true, mate. It’s really frustrating to search for just pure meat while im out and i feel hungry.. i can’t even tolerate carbs much so my lifes pretty much a mess rn
I so agree with you!! Went LCHF a year ago and have now no appetite whatsoever for sweets -- and never felt better. It makes me cringe whenever someone has pizza-coke-cake for lunch, although I'm the one looked at like a weirdo :/

I'm 71 years old and have had problems sleeping since I was in my early 30s. I have been through several sleep studies with little success. Just after Christmas of this year (early 2023) I decided to cut out all sugar intake. No sugar at all. I'm now sleeping more deeply and restful than I've slept in over 40 years. It's absolutely wonderful. My quality of life has drastically improved. The question I have now is, why did my sleep doctors NEVER tell me about this???
It’s impossible to cut out all sugar from your diet, unless you only eat meat. Literally every other food substance has sugar. So you’re not telling the truth or are misinformed.
Instead of just believing it, I actually got rid of refined sugars for one month just to see what the fuss is about...I dropped 13 lbs just like that. This is real.

And bonus: Discipline becomes a quiet/calm source of joy once it is instilled as habit. It's only painful when first practiced. Or, I suppose, if we do not reframe and retrain our thinking it could continue to feel quite burdensome. It can feel freeing.
This is so insanely true- I learned this the hard way when I got a tumor (benign, acoustic neuroma) after living on junk food my whole life. I did tons of research on the link between diet/cancer and did a drastic diet upheaval, most importantly removing sugar. A year later I recently had a follow-up appointment and it had actually shrunk quite a bit. I will always regret not hving taken better care of myself initially, because although I eat better now I'm now mostly deaf in one ear from a tumor and will have that hearing-loss forever
This is a very good, necessary talk! Unfortunately, the 80/20 rule is a fallacy. For most of us, sugar becomes an addictive food, even in a small amount. So one cookie becomes 100 cookies. It’s actually easier to commit to 100% sugar free than to even be 98% sugar free. Once the body is completely free of the sugar addiction, the cravings go away.
Be stronger. Just as you can cut sugar out, you can stop at 1 cookie. Sugar doesnt force your brain and body to reach for the next treat. It just makes it more difficult. Discipline is all it takes. If you say "i can't stop at 1", youve convinced yourself that a force outside of your control will take over and it allows you to forfeit responsibility. Thats bull. Eat the cookie and stop. Or dont eat the cookie. But don't tell convince yourself that you have the inability to stop once you've started. The 80/20 rule works as long as you have foundational discipline. If you dont, cookies aren't what you should worry about.
Yes. I tried and the moment I had 'just one' candy to celebrate it turned into the whole bag and then I was already at the store buying more. Let's face it, most of us aren't built with that type of mental strength and the discipline is built through daily habits and good choices. It's the safest bet to just eliminate the risk completely and not torture ourselves.
My mom and I went on a diet together after eating awfully for years & the changes in the way you feel is insane. Not to mention that prior to beginning the diet I had stomach problems constantly & while on the diet they nearly disappeared. Crazy how our bodies are literally trying to tell us that what we’re eating is killing us.
Not crazy at all lol. What's crazy is that most people completely ignore the obvious signals their bodies are giving them, most of the country is overweight and sick most of the time.
Before eating I always think, what im going to benefit from this or this if i eat it. Ofcourse there sometimes a times where i would eat everything like on parties but not often
It's not crazy that we ignore these signals when we live in a society where eating highly processes carbohydrates, on the regular, is normalized. It take some... courage, I guess, to realize that, no, this is not OK, even though sugar is all around us.
I felt she was talking directly to me. Ive been hitting the sugar so hard lately and gaining so much weight! I feel scared for my health. Loved this talk.
Adriana I've been through it during 2020 pandemic period and it's has been some dark and scary way. But know this - acknowledgement of your fight is the first step to winning it! So stay strong and remind yourself about what's important! If you'd like to know more on how I did it, I'll be happy to share my story! Just let me know! Hugs, Romina
The weight part isn't even the worst thing that sugar will cause, like it's killing your brain too. "Throughout the body, excess sugar is harmful. Even a single instance of elevated glucose in the bloodstream can be harmful to the brain, resulting in slowed cognitive function and deficits in memory and attention."
What scares me the most is that it's completely legal, and sometimes even frowned upon if you DON'T indulge in sugar. Like alcohol, it's societies perception of these addictive substances that can play a huge role in our dependence on or addiction to them.
Yeah, viewing food as fuel for the activities we do is really helpful. But if people think, "well, I ran two miles today so I can indulge in cookies" then they are off the mark. It doesn't work that way, not if we want optimal health and functioning.
Push and profit off of a diet designed to fuel illness, then slap insanely priced and often EXTREMELY CHEAP TO MANUFACTURE (TALKING PENNIES PER DOSE) meds on the symptoms instead of heal the root causes of those symptoms? Sounds about right....

Wow, one of the best TED talks I have listened too! Trust me, I work in a hospital, and she is 100 percent correct about the damage diabetes does!! A majority of our patients are obese diabetics in their 50s having their toes and then their feet, and then their legs amputated for chronic wounds and infections!
I agree. I will say...from my experience...when I take the time to make healthy, delicious home-made food at home, I crave less sugar. It's kind of crazy, but it works. When I let myself eat junk food, I crave sugar. When I eat well, I don't feel like I have to have sugar. My tastebuds are satisfied. Just thought I would share that.
Would be nice if companies were required to stop using over 20 different names for sugar in the nutrition facts and were required to report the carb contents of items like maltodextrin all in an effort to hide the true sugar contents.
"I'm not talking about never eating sugar again" - Yas!!! From a recovered orthorexic, a massive yas. Not putting it off limits, indulding in small qualities of high-quality desserts is what has made me feel healthy and not obsessed anymore. (because being 100% anything-free triggers my obsessive-compulsive tendencies)
Well yeah I guess whatever works for the individual. For me I get all my sugar from fruit ,healthy weight etc and I dont miss it(well most of the time). I find it easier to avoid the unnatural sugars in junk food by completely abstaining. But whatever works for each person is important.

20 years ago I was a sugar junkee. I began to have symptoms of fibromyalgia and felt like an old woman. I changed my diet completely and lost 50 lbs. All the pain and symptoms went away. Wheat is not a problem per se. It's the way commercial flour is processed. Fresh ground flower (needs to be used within 48 hours) is a completely different animal when it comes to bio-chemical effects on human physiology.
@@myown2101 it makes sense. I was wondering that there must be a difference between the flour back in the days and now. Even when I was young I didn’t have those bad reactions that I have now, so I guess in the past 30 years a lot has changed. I remember in my grandmothers village we bought the freshly grounded flour directly from the miller and my grandma made bread from it the same day. He was grinding it in front of our eyes. Just the way I buy my espresso coffee nowadays.

@Brindianz any of those carbs you're eating turns to glucose, so really it doesn't matter at the end of the day. Table sugar is the same as bread, pasta, strawberries or apples etc.
Hello, but how did you do it? Did you go cold turkey or did you work your way toward it? Did you give yourself an alternative... like eating carrots instead of sweets after lunch? Did you do lots of emotional work, since sugar is partly there to mask our emotions?
@@yin-yang-gal Hi Loraine, I sort of went cold turkey. In the beginning, I used sugar alcohols as replacers, like erythritol, until I realized that these were messing up my gut. Then I really came off. I know it can be really challenging, but once you set the pattern, it becomes a lot easier. For my clients who are really struggling with this, I recommend an amino acid called DL-phenylalanine, which can really help with sugar cravings. I've seen it work wonders! And yes, sweet veggies or fruits can be a wonderful substitute. Carrots, apples, bananas, cherries, whatever. Good luck!
My type 2 diabetes was so out of control, I was heart attack and stroke levels. I went keto. 20 g of carbs a day. No sugar. No grains or processed foods. My BP went from 312/148 to (today) 122/85. My blood sugar went from 368 to 145 and still dropping. I eat 6 hours a day. A huge salad with Avocado and a protein meal of seafood etc. Snacks are pistachios. I have never felt better. Same with one of my family members: Keto (only 20 grams of carbs a day - mostly spinach and broccoli) and fasting blood sugar went from 290 to 94 in 45 days.

The spiritual aspect wasn't discussed here at all. Know this- When you'll be more connected to yourself mentally, in a way you'll choose- Perhaps a goal in life, a love, a mission, a spiritual enlightenment- The actual consumption of food will be less significant to your body as a global notion- and staying 'healthy', 'clean' and 'light' from bad habits and heavy feelings after large meals or sugar rush- Will become your first priority. It's a mind set, under all layers. Remember, you control your life and your feelings - Not your food or high-calorie treats.

11:05...this is exactly what many nursing homes did a decade ago. What used to be "sugar free" options for diabetics...became "just give them the same as their non diabetic table mate and offset the intake with insulin." Almost 16 years now I've worked in the same dietary nursing home kitchen. I remember the day it switched and all of a sudden you heard this term "quality of life" to justify the shift from "sugar free options" to "they can have anything" as if eating sweeter was meant to better their lives. Ironically a great deal of sugar free dessert options today STILL have very unhealthy artificial sweeteners...
I worked in a nursing home as a dietary aide and many many residents flat out told me they'd rather die than live their last little time without eating what they wanted. They're like 90 years old they lived full lives and believe in heaven so.. Plus some residents would only eat and drink sweet things at all. The lead PT told me it's because sweet is the last taste to go. And their appetite and thirst tends to go too. It was better for these patients to eat only icecream and juice than nothing at all and it made them happy for a moment which is heartwarming to see in a building full of so much sadness.
@@lynn4164 This is spot on correct. Your lead PT was right. Especially when serving residents with alzheimers/demntia...the sweet is usually the best option for somebody who isn't eating. Great talk! I'd like to add my two cents. Sugar is unnecessarily added to many products to keep us addicted. READ LABELS: 1. Avoid foods with excessive amounts of added sugar. 2. Don't eat anything containing high fructose corn syrup. Reducing the added sugars and eliminating HFCS from the everyday foods we eat will help us reduce our sugar cravings.
@@jennygornall7935 I disagree. By and large, there are best practices and best foods to be consumed and also foods and drink to be avoided. You can complicate it all you want but it is a rather simple concept. It also works- my check up today was incredible BP was 107/78. I am also at an ideal weight- 6'1" and only 160lbs (without even trying!) I also don't work out as much as I should either. It just melts off. Don't be hatin' FYI, nearly everyone I know in the health/nutrition community IS a fan of listening to their own bodies. In fact, many FAST and also preach the "only eat when you are hungry" mantra which is surprisingly helpful. One person fasts by eating only once a day (OMAD) between 6pm-8pm. He does this for several months at a time with incredible benefits. Many cultures also do this successfully. There is a lot of great information in here and other online forums. You should appreciate people who are knowledgeable and generous with their willingness to share life saving info., for FREE! If you want to be a negative Nelly and dismiss it, that is on you. IMO, if a person has a mental disorder, perhaps they should spend more time in mental health forums if they are not receptive to learning but don't try to bring us down with you please. Health is like a wheel. Nutrition is but one very important spoke but there are others. As you eluded, one's headspace and motivation is key. Mine is super high- obviously. I had to rehab two life threatening injuries. I have mostly healed using nutrition (and time) so I am a BIG believer. The human body wants to heal. The mind does as well. I lean into them- gives life more meaning IMO and you can learn many lessons if you have the right attitude. Other important considerations for overall health include rest, good sleep, relatively low stress, financial and social health, etc. I sincerely wish you well. Cheers!

And yet some medicos tell us acne is not caused by eating things like chocolates etc, like many believe it is. I guess each body is unique. You obviously found what works for yours but it may not work for others. You can often discover useful thi gs by studying your own body and how it reacts to Substances like different foods, some of which are great for some bodies but toxic to others. There is This mistaken general notion that, since food is not illegal, unlike, say, dope is in some places, then the dope must all be so toxic and the legal food and drugs must be so good, since it is legal. That is nonsense because, depending on your body chemistry and what is put I to legal Substances, like supermarket foods, these legal ones can prove far more toxic than something like pure naturally grown marihuana, for some body types. I am not advocating use of illicit drugs, merely making a point.
My skin problems had 2 primary causes: bad fats like fast foods, canola, corn or soy bean oil, any cooked oils or anything deep fried etc. that helped a lot. The other thing is kidney problems. The skin is considered the 3rd kidney, so if your kidneys aren’t doing well then your skin breaks out trying to eliminate toxins that your kidneys would have otherwise removed. Fast-foods and bad oils are among the worst things for your kidneys, so removing the source is the first step. After that you want to drink certain kidney cleansing teas (like Robert Morse heal-all tea or Andreas Moritz Kidney cleansing tea found in high loved flush book), which will help further unblock the Kidneys. Also grapes can be fantastic at unblocking the kidneys, or juicing celery or other organic produce, it is highly hydrating and healing for the kidneys due to its salt-balance (potassium, sodium, mag, etc). Sugar is also hard on the kidneys and limit filtration, causing the skin to help remove from the blood what the kidneys aren’t, causing acne and other skin related issues, rashes that don’t seem to go away, etc.
3 steps we all can definitely take: 1. Have PROTEIN for breakfast. 2. If you're hungry, try drinking water first. 3. Find low-sugar replacements for high carb foods.
Drastically cutting sugar 15 months ago (and switching to a keto like diet) has been one of the best things I've ever done, I've even got a six pack for the first time in my life! No bloating, no farts, even energy levels, combines with intermittent fasting very well which also has many benefits.
A few months ago we had did a school project where we had to write a 5 page essay speaking about a Ted Talk that we had to check out. I did this one and it changed my life. I started applying it to my own life and started eating less processed and low sugar foods in my diet. I truly feel better and more energetic. I also lost weight and feel more fit to do things!!
"...chronic sugar consumption creates as much damage to the brain as abuse done in childhood..." that line really got my attention, thank you for saying that out loud!!!
I mean sadly the two often go hand in hand which is never really discussed but there is a clear correlation. In the absence of other forms of nervous system regulation, safety and comfort, trauma and abuse victims can often get addicted to sugar from a young age.
The weird part is that our loving parents often committed "abuse" unknowingly by forcing us to "finish your food and you can have desert" and "You have to eat everything on your plate". The fact is, some of us have felt almost abused by our parents because now we can't throw a plate of food away so we walk away from a meal totally stuffed to the gills. If you're one of these people, try eating half a plate of food and then force yourself to throw it away - don't save it - and see how it plays on you psychologically. When you go to a restaurant, if you get full, stop eating and don't take the food home. If you think you might take food home, ask for a box up front and split the food BEFORE you start eating. It's scary. It goes completely against our thinking. But you have to force yourself to stop thinking like you used to.
I am a reformed Cookie Monster!! I hadn’t realized how sugar was wreaking havoc with my brain and blood chemistry! It created a habit of overeating! I’m ten years in Jan that I started my journey without refined foods. Thank you for this talk!!! It was AWESOME!!
@Harry Your comment really hit me. With the television program Sesame Street, you and your childhood friends, along with millions of other children, were being "programmed" to want and eat cookies just like Cookie Monster. It would be interesting to know if a company like Nabisco was a commercial sponsor of Sesame Street.
Good for you! I will still make cookies and other treats periodically for special holidays but I always look at the sugar I'm pouring in --- there is A LOT of sugar in most cookies. That doesn't go away when you cook it. I picture the teaspoonful of sugar or thereabouts when I eat a cookie or cupcake, etc. and that helps remind me of the danger.
When growing up in the 80s a bag of M&Ms once a week on grocery day was a huge treat. The rest of the week my mom cooked from scratch and we ate from our garden and had our chickens eggs. Today, it's normal to eat a candy bar every day plus a latte Along with all the other refined packaged carbs called meals. This video is a great wake up call!
So true. And additionally to that, many of us are busy the whole day and on the street so food needs to come fast and hence we buy precessed food. This is also true for children. Imo we have less and less time for ourselves. This is also the society’s fault.
@@Si1234321 Eating healthfully doesn't have to be complicated. We don't even need to cook much if we don't have time. Hard boil some eggs and take them with you. Celery with peanut butter, carrot sticks, tuna sandwich (a little bread is OK!), fruit...so many possibilities.
Well very true CM. In the 80s we had Maccas or KFC once every three months or so, and it was considered a huge treat. But these days some people eat these foods several times a week or even day.
I cut out sugar after a lifetime of eating chocolate and processed foods. I lost over 30 pounds without trying. I eat a whole foods diet and my sweet hit now is just fruit, lots of fruit. It really is life changing just as she says.
Fruit has an effect on blood sugar, therefore it is sugar. Sugar from fruit contains both fructose and glucose which is also in soda. So I would not eat a lot. 2 servings a day would suffice.
Well said! I greatly reduced my consumption of GPS ( grains, potatoes, sugar) a year ago when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Lost 30 pounds and dropped my A1C to 5.2! Everything she says, I have experienced - better memory, better skin, more energy, less anxiety. I am just disappointed that it has taken me a lifetime to figure out that too much sugar (glucose and fructose) is really bad for you.
Totally agree - the book Sugar Blues was first published in 1975 and I read it about 10 years later. I STILL didn't pay attention (meaning I didn't slow down on soda/sugar consumption) until my doctor told me a few months ago that I have pre-diabetes.
i’m a type 1 diabetic, but i was only diagnosed when i was 18. i’m 21 now, so i still remember what it was like to be normal. i want to cry watching this because it’s such a harsh reality. i grew up in south louisiana where the best food and the worst carbs are literally everywhere. i’ve cried so much coming to realize my relationship with food and how much it has affected me. everything she’s saying is so very true. if you become diabetic, the shots are the least of your worries. every single thing you do, not just your diet, affects everything related to your health. it is EXHAUSTING, and that is an understatement for understanding how much you have to micromanage your life once you’re diabetic. i dropped out of college because i had to learn to be diabetic before i could assimilate myself back into society. if you can prevent it, this is your sign to do so. sometimes i wake up and forget i have diabetes. like i’m normal again. until it just hits me that i have this disease for the rest of my life. that does not have to be you. taking baby steps is literally the only way to go for anything you want to accomplish in life. i had to see a heart doctor at 19 due to this, and i remember he told me to fight the battles in front of me now, so i would not have to go to war in the future. please take care of yourself. you deserve it.

@@anannyapearl3290 unfortunately, that’s not true. actually, there’s so much misinformation about diabetes, it’s crazy. i have type 1 diabetes meaning my pancreas doesn’t produce insulin at all. this is an autoimmune disease that i was BORN with. and until they find a cure, i will always be this way. i will always have to take prescribed insulin to live. my diet & lifestyle has nothing to do with my type of diabetes only genetics.
NOT saying this to stop you from cutting sugar out - I'm trying to cut sugar out as well, however, caffeine can actually drastically spike your levels of anxiety! For me, it's like a 50/50 whether or not I get hugely heightened levels of anxiety. Caffeine is also just not great for you in general. So yeah - just thought I'd let you know.

@@dafni7085 Oh, Daphne. I'm so sorry. Mine went undiagnosed for a full year... until I grew a huge goiter at my throat. I hope you are getting better care. I was on medication for a long time. Until they said I would need a bone marrow transplant if it continued. This really scared me so I decided to go off the medication on my own. It took 7 tries. The 7th time I was on a fruit, vegetables, nuts, and seeds diet. So I continued that for a year, until I couldn't stand it anymore. Lol. When I started reintroducing regular food, sugar was the one thing that brought my symptoms back every time. Hope this helps. ❤ Oh, PS. The last time I went to see a doctor I was feeling great. But they said, "Your numbers are still high. You should have surgery." I never went back. Do you have a goiter? A friend suggested eating a clove of garlic a day. Yes, raw garlic. He said it was his grandma's cure. It shrunk my goiter in 2 weeks! The doctors didn't want to hear about that either. I wanted to share this with the world! All I kept hearing was "It doesn't count. It's ANECDOTAL." Blessings. ❤

Not necessarily. Most people who have trouble with alcohol, even serious trouble, are not true alcoholics. Most recover on their own and do go on to drink occasionally. But honestly, once you get used to it, it becomes harder and harder to find a really good reason to eat dessert. You either leave out something else even better to eat, or you end up too full because you ate it on top of real food.
You ended with "Thank you." No. Thank YOU! Your friend Pam went to see you for the exact reason I went to see my doctor and he just said "try eating healthier." He didn't offer options like you did. I am doing all three of your suggestions! THANK YOU!
John Burgess nope. Can’t get to her message. I couldn’t watch past 48 seconds. It’s literally impossible to listen to her speak when she smacks after every sentence.
My wake up call was losing a crown. I ate a cookie the next day and the pain was horrible. I knew I was committed to a sugar free lifestyle right there and then. Tooth is repaired and I’ll never take my teeth and overall health for granted again. Sometimes we are brought to the light kind of being dragged. What a blessing !!
They’ve done a great job conditioning us to think every meal should be an indulgence rather than simply feeding your body’s basic needs, with a few treats only in moderation. But like smoking, your always going to have a crowd of people who put indulgence above all else
And I'd say 85% (at least) of all the food in grocery stores is carbs and refined sugars...and the more refined, the cheaper. No wonder everyone is addicted, with many sick and overweight.
I am a believer!!! I quit sugar 3 weeks ago and woooowwww! I feel 20 years younger. Beware everything has sugar in it. We are being slowly poisoned to death. I also removed salt. Now when I shop I check everything. Just eat like you have a fatty liver problem and you will feel greaaat!!! I also drink water and coffee only. Thank you for your teaching.
Thank you for educating us into better health. Praying that someday all medical doctors will have to go through nutritional training so they can treat the whole patient and not just smack a pill on a problem. You are an asset to your patients!!
We do have nutritional training but in the UK our system is firefighting. There aren't enough doctors or nurses to go around. Nutrition is a government and education level issue. Of course there aren't enough teachers either but our politicians need this to be a priority and not be funded by powerful lobbying companies from the industries who produce these dreadful foods!
I watched this video during a water fast a few days ago and it inspired me to dramatically cut back on sugar and to see what would happen if I only ate Whole Foods and minimally processed meat (ground Turkey). I got sick! Or at least I thought I was: as soon as I ate a little sugar I felt better. Sugar withdrawal is crazy! And so I doubled down on the decided to only allow fruits and naturally occurring sugar (minus a Gatorade at a dance event) in, and gluten-free for good measure I haven’t felt this good in so long. Mentally, emotionally, it’s like the rhythm of a Bob Marley song is going through my soul. Excited to see how this plays out!
Sugar withdrawal is so real! I cut out all added sugar and processed foods for one month (whole-30 elimination diet) and only had lower sugar fruits, and I dreamt about brownies, cake, cookies and ice cream almost every night for one week. I rarely ever ate these things to begin with but suddenly it's all my mind could think about! It was wild.
Quick Update: I tried going back and eating gluten-sugar to see how different I might feel. Within 45mins was brain fog and slower processing (I play chess daily, and noticed how much slower my reaction and time to make decisions was). And all throughout the day it was as if I had a fog in my head and a creeping anxious feeling in my gut. Needless to say, I'm going to see how this thing (whole food, less sugar, gluten-free) plays out! Good luck on all your journey's ↗️☀️
Just cutting out all refined sugars i lost 20 kilos in a month. My hair is nourished, thicker & my skin looks glowing. I have a great body now. My advise is that refined sugar strips vital nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron and many other vitamins and minerals.
R. Devi there’s no scientific evidence that proves that loosing weight “too quickly” has negative consequences, this is oftentimes said because people are usually drawn to “crazy diets” in order to lose weight. So it’s not about the weight loss in itself, but what people who are trying to lose weight are consuming and thinking it is good for them. If someone changes their diet dramatically then losing weight dramatically is also what it’s expected to happen. Plus, when someone is heavier than they should be, their body burns extra calories for carrying all that weight around, losing weight is easier for heavier people.
Props to her fitness regiment. She is jacked. 💪🏼💕. Most diabetics I know do exactly what she says - eat irresponsibly and increase insulin. Now I know why.
I have had pre-diabetes for 20 years and have been doing what she said but I need to improve a bit more. When my new Doctor asked me how long I have had Pre-diabetes I told him and he said he has never known anyone like me cause all of his patients diagnosed with it go on metformin and then insulin within 10 years. This is a board certified family physician. MOST know nothing about this. This lady is spot on! Last A1c for me was 5.9... Not bad but I can improve it. So can you. YOU are in charge of your blood sugar destiny if you are a thinking person.
Jayson T what's easy for some is difficult for others. There are many people who do want to and who put in the effort but it will may a long time before they can fully give it up. Some people have food addictions and eating disorders. You saying "its easy" is merely your perception. ✌
Wow!!! Her majestic walk to the backstage after the talk….. was exuding the confidence and satisfaction that she was experiencing after having done a good deed
This is great information to help inspire people. I would like to add though that for some people having 20% sugar in their diet would render it impossible to only have 20%. I gave up sugar and flour 100% four years ago and lost 100 pounds and have never felt better. So if you’re having trouble letting go of a little sugar, you might need to give it all up and you will not regret it! don’t be deceived by the lore of moderation. You wouldn’t tell an alcoholic having a little alcohol is OK. Many of us have become sugar addicts without realizing it.
She didn't say 20% sugar, she said to keep foods containing sugar to 20%. At that point, you can work on getting the 20% to have a lower and lower amount of sugar as time goes by, and of course, some forms of sugar are healthier due to containing other nutrients. Refined white sugar contains no nutrition whatsoever.
@@kimberlyeder4162 that’s awesome! You probably feel amazing! I will say however that I am not in the camp of no potatoes or rice. If the earth made it and it’s whole, I can eat it. Getting the man made refinement out of one’s diet is the main thing and would cause the biggest improvement for most people.
It’s so hard walking into the grocery store and seeing so many processed options filled with sugars ... I have a one year old and a three year old and everyone seems to want to fill their innocent, cute & perfect little bodies with sugar!!! When I say no, people guilt trip me or make me feel like I am a mean parent!!! - I hope my children grow to be healthy women and make good and healthy food choices but also do enjoy their lives!!
Samantha Gidge Aerial Silks I know the feeling...try not to take them to the grocery it's also makes them to nag about it. I don't expect to eliminate sugar entirely for them but I try my best to make it less, and to teach them healthy alternatives. You're a good mom I'm Shure!
There is absolutely nothing mean about saying No and setting kind and healthy boundaries and rules for our children. A No to something unhealthy is a Yes to health on all levels! We win some, we lose some--and it's none of anyone else's business but yours. Keep up the loving work, mama!
Same here. Most parents want their children to be and do better... I think it starts with showing them how to eat better so they won't pass along the issues with food most of us have. I'm defeated in my efforts most times... For the same reasons you mentioned... But I won't give up.
The trick is finding fun and interesting food that you can make. Fresh vegetables and fruits, unprocessed meats and e,tra bits and pieces with little or no added sugar. Basically don't have anything over 10% sugar (except sauces and things you only have a little of). Carbs in general need to stay low too because our bodies just turn that into sugar anyway
It doesn’t have to be 0 or 100, just as she mentioned in the Ted talk. The 80/20 rule is great. I have been healing from toxic mold and yeast overgrowth so have been making major dietary changes. I eat brown rice a few times a week, limited amounts of potatoes and other starchy vegetables, but eat apples, berries, peaches, non/starchy vegetables freely. I’ve made a complete turnaround in how I feel, and I plan to continue living by the 80/20 rule as I move forward. I was relatively healthy before so I didn’t have any weight to really lose, but it’s made me feel great. But I didn’t COMPLETELY cut our carbs as others are suggesting. I don’t believe that is ever a good idea for humans.
This is so true. I started keto and intermittent fasting a few months ago, and one thing that I didn’t expect was its positive effect on mood and overall sense of well-being. And I haven’t had to give up sweets entirely thanks to keto-friendly alternative sweeteners that have zero effect on blood sugar and insulin, and low carb alternatives to wheat and grains like almond flour and coconut flour.
What are those alternative sweeteners? I was a bit surprised when she said stevia because my understanding is stevia, is, many more times sweeter than sugar, so it can still affect us negatively.
@@yin-yang-gal stevia tastes sweeter than sugar but should not affect blood sugar/glucose levels. It is a keto accepted sweetener. I also use monkfruit, erythritol, and the keto UA-camr I watch uses allulose.

This is an excellent point.
I am going to laminate this and place it on the refrigerator!
And bonus:
Discipline becomes a quiet/calm source of joy once it is instilled as habit.
June Chamberlin Agree 100%
Agree completely.. This is why we don't even use sweeteners because it is a reminder of sugar.

For my clients who are really struggling with this, I recommend an amino acid called DL-phenylalanine, which can really help with sugar cravings. I've seen it work wonders! I've changed my life 10 years ago. No bread; Vegetables, no Coffee. A lot of training, jogging, etc. Healthy and fresh food only. One thing I must add.

Other important considerations for overall health include rest, good sleep, relatively low stress, financial and social health, etc.
I sincerely wish you well.

This reminded me of a time I cut sugar out for lent, that's 40 days, during which I experienced cravings, headaches and suffered for about 2 weeks, only to discover that after that period I felt amazing. I have 10 days into that diet now.. so far so good. You should go back to it.
I've had acne since before I was 12. I cut most sugars from my diet for a week and my skin almost completely cleared up!
Yeah I still break out now if I have too much sugar
They used to call is “skin diabetes.” Mine was from sugar and also caffeine.
Sugar is inflammation, acne is a caused of inflammation.

Or have fruit for breakfast- fruit has no negative impact on anyone even diabetics!
@@martinabattistich387 is that true? I think diabetics need to be careful about fruits because though natural, they're still high in sugars.
Examples on #3: Pasta made from Zucchini noodles, and cookies made with almond flour with stevia as a sweetener
Drastically cutting sugar 15 months ago (and switching to a keto like diet) has been one of the best things I've ever done, I've even got a six pack for the first time in my life! No bloating, no farts, even energy levels, combines with intermittent fasting very well which also has many benefits.
If you don't eat grass finished you are eating corn and soy- you get that right?
A few months ago we had did a school project where we had to write a 5 page essay speaking about a Ted Talk that we had to check out. I did this one and it changed my life. I started applying it to my own life and started eating less processed and low sugar foods in my diet. I truly feel better and more energetic. I also lost weight and feel more fit to do things!!
Keep going 💪 that's amazing!
Minimizing the effects of child abuse.
I read this right as she said it lol
@@argoneonoble Agreed
GREAT JOB
@Harry 🤭😉😳😆🥰
Hottest cookie monster Ive ever seen
When growing up in the 80s a bag of M&Ms once a week on grocery day was a huge treat. The rest of the week my mom cooked from scratch and we ate from our garden and had our chickens eggs. Today, it's normal to eat a candy bar every day plus a latte Along with all the other refined packaged carbs called meals. This video is a great wake up call!
So true. And additionally to that, many of us are busy the whole day and on the street so food needs to come fast and hence we buy precessed food. This is also true for children. Imo we have less and less time for ourselves. This is also the society’s fault.
@@jayjoe3716 are we busy or are we caught in the sugar cycle and simply don’t have the energy to cook properly.
@@Altamisal the bread is a deadly option for me. I'm type 2 and don't make enough amylase to cover the carbohydrate load.
A big round of applause for this lady ❤ really life changing session 😊
I cut out sugar after a lifetime of eating chocolate and processed foods. I lost over 30 pounds without trying. I eat a whole foods diet and my sweet hit now is just fruit, lots of fruit. It really is life changing just as she says.
Don Wetherell me too
Fruit has an effect on blood sugar, therefore it is sugar. Sugar from fruit contains both fructose and glucose which is also in soda. So I would not eat a lot. 2 servings a day would suffice.
Sugar is sugar....fruit too. Need to cut down the fruit if you don't want to have beta cell burnout.
Nope. TV said sugar is good. Tasty treat 🤗
That's amazing, Don! Congratulations!
ITs fructose that is what causes the disability and early death!
i’m a type 1 diabetic, but i was only diagnosed when i was 18. i’m 21 now, so i still remember what it was like to be normal. i want to cry watching this because it’s such a harsh reality. i grew up in south louisiana where the best food and the worst carbs are literally everywhere. i’ve cried so much coming to realize my relationship with food and how much it has affected me. everything she’s saying is so very true. if you become diabetic, the shots are the least of your worries. every single thing you do, not just your diet, affects everything related to your health. it is EXHAUSTING, and that is an understatement for understanding how much you have to micromanage your life once you’re diabetic. i dropped out of college because i had to learn to be diabetic before i could assimilate myself back into society. if you can prevent it, this is your sign to do so. sometimes i wake up and forget i have diabetes. like i’m normal again. until it just hits me that i have this disease for the rest of my life. that does not have to be you. taking baby steps is literally the only way to go for anything you want to accomplish in life. i had to see a heart doctor at 19 due to this, and i remember he told me to fight the battles in front of me now, so i would not have to go to war in the future. please take care of yourself. you deserve it.
Wow this is a touching post. You are a rock star. You got this! Advances are coming. Be a champion now for others. You have inspired me...which never happens. I also just listened to The Plant Paradox. You might get some good info. out of this book. He's a Yale grad and MD- very smart.

Today was the first day I haven't had my coffee with my half a teaspoon of sugar I'm not having an anxiety attack. How wonderful
that is such a minimal amount of sugar that I'm almost certain that's a placebo effect

I read SUGAR BLUES and THE SUGAR ADDICT'S DIET twenty years ago and they changed my life! Quitting sugar cured me of a horrible illness - Graves Disease. It's so great to see that this message has finally gone mainstream. ❤😁🍳

Oh, PS.
Information was well organized, but her speaking and presentation skills are nowhere close to being brilliant. Definitely knows her stuff, but could use coaching to bring out the best in her speaking.
Hearing this is going to change my life. This was an eye opener thank you
I'm not sure 80/20 is realistic at all for those of us who are addicted. That's like telling an alcoholic that he can have a drink 20% of the time!
Alcohol isn't in like 90% of the liquids we consume though
Not necessarily. Most people who have trouble with alcohol, even serious trouble, are not true alcoholics. Most recover on their own and do go on to drink occasionally. But honestly, once you get used to it, it becomes harder and harder to find a really good reason to eat dessert. You either leave out something else even better to eat, or you end up too full because you ate it on top of real food.
Not really the same thing
You ended with "Thank you." No. Thank YOU! Your friend Pam went to see you for the exact reason I went to see my doctor and he just said "try eating healthier." He didn't offer options like you did. I am doing all three of your suggestions! THANK YOU!
What she has to say is more important than any delivery issue !
John Burgess nope. Can’t get to her message. I couldn’t watch past 48 seconds. It’s literally impossible to listen to her speak when she smacks after every sentence.
I don’t imagine anyone with diabetes receiving a consultation with her would leave after 48 seconds because of this!
The delivery shouldnt impact on the enormity of the words.....but it does.
She is so right. There is an epidemic of diabetes and we all need to limit carbs. I don't want diabetes. But I wouldn't cut out meat.
David Crandall Lmao its insane that fact that people think "this tastes so good...I'll go ahead and die/live a lower quality of life for it."
Very well said!

Praying won’t do much, apart from waste time.
This will never happen. pharmaceutical industry makes millions out of people being sick and medicated.

3 years later, I am so glad I bumped into this! Sugar addiction is real and evidently dangerous!💡
20 kilos a month sounds kinda dangerous?
R. Devi being overweight or obese is way more dangerous and nobody reacts this way !
@@aureliamukian1259 actually losing weight slowly is better for you. Loose weight the proper way and you're more likely to keep it off
@@aureliamukian1259 that’s because that’s 44 pounds….doesn’t even seem possible in 30 days. Were you on survivor?

how long I have had Pre-diabetes I told him and he said he has never known anyone like me cause all of his patients diagnosed with it go on metformin and then insulin within 10 years.

Yes, quitting sugar absolutely changed my life for better. This is one of the first videos I watched on quitting sugar almost two years ago.
The solution is simple, but simple does not mean easy 😕
Kayla Empson It's very easy. The issue is, people don't want to. It has nothing to do with ease.
Jayson T what's easy for some is difficult for others. There are many people who do want to and who put in the effort but it will may a long time before they can fully give it up. Some people have food addictions and eating disorders. You saying "its easy" is merely your perception. ✌
Kayla Empson facts
Kayla Empson life isn't supposed to be easy. We're just spoiled!
Very true.
"Eat as much sugar as you want. Just take more insulin." is the craziest line I have heard today.
You are right, but it is true. I hear it from my patients all the time.
I had to rewind twice. I was shocked and horrified!!!
TRUTH! I did the same - no sugar, no flour, no white potatoes or rice, bread. I lost 135 pounds.
There's no such thing as sugar addiction and nowadays former alcoholics don't never touch a drop of alcohol.
Sugar is actually addictive causing the same brain response as addictive drugs
This lady spoke really well and delivered her points really well. Very interesting
her speaking sucks
I think she did neither of those things well.
Preach! I have 2 little ones and I completely understand. People say we are "depriving" them. Like, huh? 🤔🤦....
Sugar addiction can be like alcohol addiction. If you can’t do it in moderation (me) just don’t do it.
