  • New Personal Record! This was without a doubt the craziest day on the water I've ever had. A good friend of mine invited me out for a day of fishing and it turned out to be an experience I'll never forget. We launched early and found a lot of Akule. As the sun started to rise we trolled around looking for Opelu and predators. We managed to find a few piles and stock up on bait. It didn't take long before I found a small school of Mahi and pulled out a couple. As the day went on the wind picked up a bit which must have stirred up a monster because the next fish I caught was the biggest Mahi I ever seen and probably will ever catch. It was a long battle on undergunned tackle but after about 35 minutes I landed a massive 47.7lb mahi. Oh, and did I mention there was a smaller mahi on my other line the whole time? Absolute chaos. Enjoy!

Aloha JI: That big Mahi = gorgeous colors! Who did the artwork for you of it? And is there a name for that kind of artwork? Anyway, quite beautiful. Even though I am still a rookie at Kayak fishing, let me give you one tip only because I have a 2022 Hobie Outback also and I know every inch of my kayak: The built in rod holders, especially up front...I cut the black rubber covers off and I put my Opelu Sabiki rod in one and more importantly, I stick my kage in the other. Makes it real easy to store that kage out of the way of most things I have to reach for and also very easy to grab to use. I notice that you ran no wire on this day of fishing, at least I think you didn't. How do you balance running 40 Lb flouro leader for shibin and then wire for Ono? For you, is is as simply as one rod Flouro live bait and the other wire leader live bait? I catch mahi all the time...pretty much every time I go out, but I have yet to catch an Ono...because they always cut me off on their initial blistering run.

Aloha Kelly! Ya he was spectacular. The artwork is called Gyotaku and I had it done by Naoki in Kaneohe. He did an amazing job, I’m super happy with it!
Thanks for the advice! I tried putting rods up in the front holders before but I constantly switch sides while fishing and it would obstruct my ability to do so. That’s why I prefer to have everything behind me.
I actually had wire on my conventional rod this day. Typically when I run two surface baits I have one on straight fluorocarbon and the other with wire. I used to hate running wire because it was so visible and ugly looking to me and I didn’t feel confident that fish would bite. However, I knew if I wanted to catch Ono, or have a decent chance at catching them, I had to run wire. I ended up making rigs from titanium and crimps and I don’t mind it anymore. I try and keep it as streamline as possible. Mahi certainly don’t seem to care about wire, nor do Ono. I’ve also caught uku and shibi on wire but out of all the species, the tunas definitely seem to be more weary of wire. The ones I’ve caught on wire have been early morning when visibility isn’t that great.
Everyone does things differently though, that’s just what I’ve had success with.
      Hope that helps,
      Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

I kept losing onos and then ran a four foot, extra heavy single wire leader and finally caught two
