New Species Unlocked! | Shortbill Spearfish (Hebi) | Hawaii Kayak Fishing
After a long month of no fishing I was finally able to get back out there and boy what a nice welcome back fish! I hit the water with Blaine, Loren and @wheres_d_ahi and it was a fun one indeed. Bait was plentiful which is always a promising start to the day. I think we all had 8-10 Opelu and Devan probably had 150 as he usually does haha. That day I had my sites set on pushing out to deeper water and it certainly paid off! This was my first Hebi (Shortbill Spearfish) and what a pleasant surprise it was.

Thanks a lot! 🙏🏻 I typically use 40 or 50lb when I run my 150g jigs, primarily due to the size of the fish that I’m likely going to encounter. If you’re targeting smaller fish, or bigger fish, I’d suggest adjust accordingly so you’re equipped to handle those fish 🤙🏻

The way you had the Kahala with the jig, stiil in it's mouth next to your family jewels, was cause for concern. One kick and the wrong way, not a good way to hook them.
Didn’t even realize it at the time. The hook was pretty buried in his lip but thanks for looking out! My wife will appreciate your concern 🤣🤙🏻
@@jifishingco I got hooked in my calf once, luckily my nephews were there because the barb went into my leg, and I had to push the barb back through the skin to cut it off, so I could back out the remainder of the hook. As sharp as the hook was, I had a hard time in pushing it back through and out, my nephew had to help. Imagine if that happened to your balls, penis, or inner thigh, you'd have to cut through the clothes you have on also.

@@jifishingco It's just that while taking fishing gear out of the SUV, and my pole was against the ice cooler, the pole slid off the lid and the hook on the pole went into my calf. Of course I didn't panic, but the circle hook barb was in my skin, and you have to push the hook tip and barb back through the skin, so you can clip off the barb, so you can remove the hook shaft backing it out. If that happened to you through your shorts, clothing, into your family jewels or inner thigh, you then have to force the barb through the skin and clothing, to clip the barb off, so you can back out the hook. The fact that the fish is also struggling, with a chance to even imbed the hook further, is the reason I mentioned it.

Awesome job! when it's dark out do you use glow in the dark grubs for the akule and do they show up mid-water on the fishfinder like opelu? Thanks
@@brand808 Thanks a lot! 🤙🏻 I just use the same grubs as I do for Opelu. I’ve never tried glow grubs but to be honest, I don’t fish much for akule so I’m no expert haha. As for marking them, I see them all throughout the water column. Sometimes they hang towards the bottom but I think when light is around they come up higher.
