  • In the early hours of Friday the 6th of October 1854,the north east of England witnessed the almost total destruction of the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides as a mighty explosion and the resulting fires tore through the workplaces and communities that lived and worked on and near the river, when it was all over 53 people would be dead, hundreds injured and the area decimated.

A wonderful film that I shall recommend to anyone and everyone who''ll listen. Thank you, from a proud resident of Gateshead.

I was walking through a graveyard in Gateshead and came across Charles Bertrams gravestone and it said how he died in a fire and explosion at hillgate. So when I googled it I learned about the great fire, and no one I know had ever heard of it. Great film, thank you, now I know how it all happened.

I remember learning about this in primary school and watching this later. The soundtrack you used was perfect as it gave a combined feeling of fear and dread but it never distracts from the history or narrative. I remember being fascinated by this peace as a child and it helped spark my Passion for history though it always made me feel uneasy. It's a shame it isn't as well known as the grate fire of London though I feel it deserves to be more well known.

Wow that's the very first time I have seen or even heard of the Great Fire. What an interesting no that's not the word for this it's amazing and outstanding I was enthralled to see places and listen to this true story. They should make a film ( I mean a film with actors etc). You have made my afternoon and Thankyou to all of the people who explained this so well. I Appreciate your time and effort Thank you.

Why does the woman seem pleased when talking about loss of life in this horrific tragedy.

It's on the front cover of a history book issued to all school pupils around 1979 in Gateshead. God's judgement on a ungodly city sounds about right as it's not much better these days. Gateshead is a town, Newcastle is a city.

Yes true however Newcastle never became a city until years later so the film and was it a lady who said they were both towns, was quite correct.
