The story behind these books is really sweet. The author's (Rick Riordan)'s son had ADHD and dyslexia and loved Greek mythology. Rick used to tell him Greek myths as bedtime stories but eventually he ran out. So he created Percy as someone his son (Haley) could relate to. A hero who was like him that he could look up to. Haley loved his dad's story so much, and begged him to publish it. He even wrote a short story set in the Percy Jackson world later in life. This is a story from a dad to his son about how much he believed in him. I love it.
That a really sweet story and really love hearing how much passion and care Riordan gave towards these books and how much it means to him and his son, I hope they get a better adaption this time.
I love the fact that the PJ fandom have unanimously agreed that the movies are so terrible that the only response is to try to gaslight people into believing that they don’t exist
Kind of like with the atla fandom... They don't like to acknowledge the movie at all! _there is no movie in Ba sing se, here there is peace, here we are free._
A lot of stuff didn't get translated to the movie. I can't believe the guy who brought Harry Potter to life butchered this movie so badly. They completely sidelined the main bad guy of the series, Kronos
Rick Riordan actually was sent the script before the movie came out, and hated it. He sent the writers a email talking about the issues he had. He said that the fans who watch the movie will be disappointed and share horrible word of mouth. Which actually happened. This just shows that the writers didn’t care or respect the books.
In the books… 3:42 Percy was usually a loser at his school because he befriended the bullied kids, who were almost always disabled (Grover in this book and Tyson later on). 9:30 it’s rare for the big three to have children because after WW2 they aren’t allowed to have affairs with mortals. Which doesn’t really stop them that much as we later on meet two children of Zeus 11:26 Hades never shows up. One monster gets in the camp and it’s a big deal because it’s not suppose to happen 16:00 gods are allowed to talk to their half blood children, they’re just neglectful assholes who don’t care about their kids
Might want to edit this because Hades was NEVER the bad guy in the books or in Greek mythology as a whole. He just sent monsters to Percy because he too was stolen from and thought it was him.
To be fair on the "doesn't really stop them" thing, as far as we know I think there were only 2 kids of the Greek big 3 and 1 of the Romans, which is significantly less than their kids in Greece/Rome.
I mean this is what Rick Riordan(author of the books) had to say about the script for this movie: "Having said that, here’s the bad news: The script as a whole is terrible. I don’t simply mean that it deviates from the book, though certainly it does that to point of being almost unrecognizable as the same story. Fans of the books will be angry and disappointed. They will leave the theater in droves and generate horrible word of mouth. That is an absolute given if the script goes forward as it stands now. But the bigger problem is that even if you pretend the book doesn’t exist, this script doesn’t work as a story in its own right. The good news: It is eminently fixable. When I first read the script I’ll admit I was plunged into despair at just how bad it was. If I were intentionally trying to sabotage this project, I doubt I could have done a better job than this script. But as I began to make notes and look specifically at what was bothering me, I realized that the script could be made palatable to fans and the general movie-going audience without really changing its present scene structure, lengthening the script, or adding new sets that would increase the budget. I am choosing to take heart in your assurance that this script is not finished. That is one thing we can agree on: It needs help."
Man, I can't believe Alex did a whole video where he let absolute silence play for 17 and a half minutes, its such a cool way to showcase how there is no Percy Jackson movies, as everyone in the PJO fanbase can attest to
Percy Jackson was so bad that the author of the books requested if he could write the script. That’s how bad it is. He had so much stuff going on and he could’ve dropped everything just to make it what the fans want. Uncle Rick is the best
I normally love comparing the books to the movies but with this I felt disappointed too. Like the movie isn't worth watching twice and the books were my absolute favourites as a kid. If they made a good movie I feel like it would have been almost Harry Potter level popular
My younger sister was a big fan of the books so when the movie came out I took her to see it. Throughout the whole movie she had her arms crossed and kept saying "Lies." every time the movie got something wrong. This movie is now known as "Lies: The Movie" in our family.
the hilarious thing is that Percy and Annabeth are supposed to be *_TWELVE_* in this Grover is in his early 30s, but Satyrs age half as fast as humans so here he's 15-16 in the movies they bump it up to 16, even then you have an 18 and a 24yo playing them that and they mixed Clarice's (one of the daughters of Ares, who doesn't appear in this film for whatever reason) headstrong, cocky and rather blunt personality with Annabeth's, smart, bookish, and sometimes shy personality. Annabeth also has blonde (sometimes referred to as sandy) hair, and grey eyes (which are a sign of wisdom, which she inherited from her mother)
Ikr? Also Annabeth has said that her blond hair has led her to work twice as hard to gain recognition and respect, because everyone at a glance assumes that she's just a dumb blond.
Book Percy = Scrappy kid whose creativity and improvisation saved him time and time, is extremely funny, and his greatest strength and weakness is his loyalty. Movie Percy = A normal guy I guess. Also kinda wants his own glory and takes in his position of power. Book Annabeth = Super smart girl who wants to prove herself because she is a blonde and is called dumb, and because she failed her best friends in her mission. She’s tough and hard to get to open up, but extremely genuine and intelligent. Movie Annabeth = The cool swordswoman hot chick who thinks of things sometimes. Book Grover = A sensitive kind of kid with huge goals but not the confidence to reach them. Wants to guide and protect but is not sure of himself and wants to prove himself as well. Always willing to make the sacrifice play as he sees himself as the smallest chip in the game. Movie Grover = A super self confident jock who chases after the babes.
In the movie, Annabeth calls herself the daughter of the Goddess of Battle Strategy and immediately takes her helmet off. This really shows how much the writers cared.
Thank you for this comment, when I was a kid I first found about Percy Jackson by being introduced to the movies by some kids at school, and was so put off by Grover in the movie that I had forsaken the entire series including the books haha. I was like "oh of course the black friend who isn't a demigod is only good for comedic affect".
In the original novels, Annabeth was a brainy girl with a complex backstory who saved Percy and Grover multiple times. Here, she's the designated damsel who constantly needs to be rescued.
I love how they just... aged up the characters for no reason. Like, Percy is 12 in the first book but in the movie he's 16. This makes a lot of his accomplishments in the movie a lot less impressive imo. It's so dumb. (Also, the Greek Gods move to different countries every like 200 years or something it's a lil silly)
@@en4833 Nah that was a Prophecy regarding Percy alone. About children of the big three, they tend to start huge fights, WWII was actualy one of them, and I kid you not, the books hinted that Roosevelt, Churchil and Hitler were children of Zeus, Poseidon and Hades (the book "Son of neptune" flat-out confirmed Hades is Hitler's dad xD)
This movie is the very definition of "so bad it's fun" for me. Every scene is either epically stupid or stupidly epic. The book, on the other hand, is actually a pretty good read for middle schoolish aged kids.
@@premiumheadpats4150 That's true. I didn't mean to age-gate the books. I first read The Lightning Thief at 27. I was just going for a more general "target audience" guideline.
I read the whole series (and the one about the prophecy of the 7 as well) when I was 14-16. That was over 12 years ago. I just started to read the books again for the new series and they are as fun as I remembered them to be.
I'll never forget the day I went to watch this at the cinema. I loved the books, still do, and was super excited to go watch the movie with some friends. Three friends cancelled on me while I was already on the way/at the cinema, leaving me with one guy who I wasn't super close with. He then started to try paying for everything and I realized the whole thing was a setup. So there I was, in crisis, awkwardly trying to act oblivious to the whole non-consensual date situation while also despairing over the absolute butchery of the Percy Jackson universe.
Sounds like a case of brothas trying to help a brotha out…….in the worst way! In cases like this movie, it’s just better to not have read the book so we can enjoy the movie for what is.
Here I was reading the first half thinking 'we weren't close, but we bashed the movie, had fun and became close and married' or something, but it went the complete opposite way lmao Sorry to hear that
The one thing this movie got right from the book is the way Luke is portrayed in the beginning of the film. The book describes him kinda of like a considerate fratboy before his turn, which is the exact way he's portrayed here.
Can we just talk about this real quick: Grover in the movies: tries to rizz up everything and is a cocky little bastard. In the books: dating a bush, and is scared of almost everything.
I can’t get over the e-mail(or the cry for help) Rick sent to the producers telling them how this script wouldn’t work out and was completely ignored, glad he’s in charge of the show.
The first lesson people should learn is never lose control of your IP. It's no accident ROP wasn't developed until after Christopher's death. He had veto power over existing characters and I bet would've used it on their Galadriel & others. They only admitted they couldn't make 'egregious changes' yet that's what they did. Cowboy Bebop's writer had no rights and they ignored his notes. Yet the same producers made One Piece with the creator breathing down their necks. Look at the difference? HW egos are treacherous.
I recently watched the first old Percy Jackson movie and it was horrible, they straight up skipped multiple scenes compared to the new trailer for the show that has every scene how I envisioned them. Truly the perfect example of how great Rick is
Another thing that pretty much EVERYONE hated about the movie is how they portrayed Hades and Persephone. In the books (and mythology) he’s a grump, but not evil. The only reason he tries to capture Percy is because he wants to go “Hey brothers, I got Percy, stop causing chaos!” They meet Cerberus (who many fans and mythology lovers can agree is best boi), and Persephone doesn’t even appear in the first book! The thing though is that they have possibly the healthiest relationship among the other gods, and Hades never once cheated on her (at least in actual mythology). Plus the underworld in the books is far less hellish and far more skeleton-y.💀
that’s what i thought about the underworld when i watched the movie. i was so confused, i had it as rhese fields one he left and right, and aswell the field for the good people. and then the hill with that guy pushing the boulder. like.. they saw people?? but in thre underworld, just fire and then they were took straight to hades’ palace..
Honestly, my biggest issue was the fact that Persephone was in the Underworld in the first place. Not only was she not there in the book, but it's June, she would be up on Olympus. Also, with Hades, the movie fell into the frustratingly common trap in pop culture of equating him with the Christian devil, because clearly Underworld = hell, thus Hades = Satan (though admittedly, this movie isn't as bad as some other incarnations). Not only are Hades and Persephone arguably the couple with the healthiest relationship in the Greek mythos, Hades is one of the most chill gods. He's just a guy doing his job. He only ever messed with mortals when they truly deserved it.
as someone disabled who uses a cane (at a young age), i find the disability to hidden power thing to be cheesy, but well-meaning. it was never meant for jaded adults or even older teens, but when youre 12 and struggling with something that makes you so different from other people, it can be a huge comfort.
I'd like to point out, I'm pretty sure that never happened. Not in the percy jackson series, the heroes of olympus series, the kane chronicles (set in the same universe), and the first 2 books of trials of apollo. Chiron using a wheelchair was because he's a centaur. How exactly is the Mist gonna hide him from mortal eyes? probably by making him look like a normal dude riding a horse everywhere. Which would be weird, since Percy would see him as a centaur, while the mortals would see a guy on horseback in a classroom. As for Grover, he "limps" because he has goat legs and hooves. He has difficulty keeping his fake feet on and quite literally has differently shaped legs. As for ADHD and Dyslexia, the movie got it right. The ADHD helps in combat, as a demigod's attention needs to be able to move quickly from one thing to the next. And the Dyslexia is because demigod brains are geared more towards Ancient Greek (or Roman). There's not a single instance (in the books) where Riordan tried to do a disability to hidden power thing, since they weren't actual disabilities in the first place.
@@MorganSaphEven ADHD is not really a superpower. ADHD is something that is very exhausting to control, and requires full focus. If you see a bird flying at the edge of your vision, chances are, you'll get distracted. It goes without saying how dangerous that would when fighting to the death when a single well placed blow can kill you
I just realised that all the questions and plot holes you had about the movie were things I had the answer to because they're ACTUALLY explained in the book. It still sucks to this day that the adaptation was butchered this bad.
Yeah I always forget that not everyone has the knowledge from the books as well, which just shows how bad the movies were at explaining the things they kept in
this is mostly just a flaw with these garbage movies, hades and persephone are like the most stable couple in the entire series, hades was super chill and nice and had an entire garden. hes the ruler of the underworld not because hes evil but because he just got the short straw and hes perfectly content with that. zeus does still breed like a rabbit but once a prophecy reveals that a half-blood child of the big 3 will end the world so they decide to put a ban on having any more children (all of them break it still but thats not important)
I hate that they changed Luke's motive. In the books his original motive is that he is angry at the Gods for not claiming their children. He was the cabin leader for the Hermes cabin, and all unclaimed kids would stay there until they were claimed, but many of the Gods would just leave their kids unclaimed until they did something cool or impressive, which led a lot of kids to be crammed into the Hermes cabin and feel alone and abandoned. This made Luke feel really angry and he wanted to get revenge or have a bargaining chip against the gods to change that. In the movie his motive is just... Me want power
And it's worse for the children of minor gods since they don't even have their own cabin. Even if they're claimed, they'd still stay at the hermes cabin. That's Ethan's whole motivation. That's why he sided with Kronos who hated the olympians specifically.
I thought it was, along with what you said, that the gods wouldn't claim their children until they needed them, and how Luke was the last demigod to go on a quest before it was claimed too dangerous due to his failure, and how the gods never cared that he nearly died doing something for them. He felt like the children were mearly pawns to the gods, to use with as they see fit. Also, at least in the later books, Percy starts to see what Luke was feeling, since he was starting to feel the same pressure and weariness from all the quests, and how Percy realized he was roughly around the same age as Luke was when Luke became jaded against the Olympians
@@deviousangel336 They mean that parts of the movie that aren't explained in the book weren't even in the book to begin with. You know the movie adding stuff on their own that doesn't make sense.
@@deviousangel336 Dude, calm down. The point this person is trying to make is that the movies are an atrocious adaptation of the books that do not do them justice. We understand that this is a movie review, we’re just saying that the movies are not an accurate representation of the books.
@@deviousangel336the problem is this movie doesn't follow the books at ALL. most of the impontat plotlines weren't even there or they just straight up changed to something completely different ruining the pace of the storyline. to the point they solved in 2 movies with a 5min scene or less, what it took 5 books.
Logan and Alexandra are the definition of right person wrong time...i feel so strongly that if they were at the correct age and the script was better it would have it hit off
@@xcosminax i’d love to see alexandra play athena. not as a nod to the movies (they deserve zero nods) but just because she’d be the perfect fit. she has those vibes of a person who knows everything but won’t share. besides, in the books athena was described as having very intense eyes, and intense eyes alexanda has.
@@gwyngwyn_2416 Rick is a moron who's brain is rotting because of all the sjw shit he keeps pushing. That show is going to bomb so hard it's going to be hilarious to see.
I was really hyped when the movie came out and as you do, I watched interviews after interviews of the cast. No one had read the books. No one cared about the books. Logan even ridiculed a fans question about book-Percy’s personality/likes. So no, even though I had the biggest crush on Logan at the time, he and the others shouldn’t be in the remake. Riordan is in the right to keep everyone that was allowed in the first version away from the upcoming show.
"i like water" made me so angry bc Percy would never say that. So much of this and the second film just showed an absolute lack of attention to the books.
book percy's reaction to hearing about his mom's supposed death: The weather was bright and sunny. My mother was gone. Nothing should be bright. movie Percy's reaction to hearing about his mom's supposed death: literally the reaction you'd have if you forgot to study for a test.
The dyslexia and ADHD thing are actually accurate ☠️☠️☠️ Rick wrote the series for his son who actually does struggle with both of those, so he could see himself as a capable hero/person despite the learning hitbacks. I understand how someone w/ ADHD or dyslexia could misunderstand or feel misrepresented, but its not meant to be representation, its supposed to comfort children who already have them.

As someone who didn't read the books and watched this in high school and was obsessed with Logan Lerman, the movies never seemed so bad to me. That's because on its own if it was unrelated to the series then it would have been fine, but it was just a slap in the face for the fans. Changing so much from the source material is always a terrible idea and I'm really glad they're remaking it more accurately.
@@rinwhittney5039 This is always mind boggling to me. Why change your opinion on the movie even when you enjoyed it, just because you read the books and they were better? The adhd and dyslexia were added as rick son who he wrote the story for original had these problems in school. The wheelchair and crutches were just a way for grover and chiron to hide their animals parts since satyr walk funny compared to human. The reason Sally was with Gabe was because of his overpowering scent but I don't think the movie acknowledged that monsters can smell half bloods
Technically we never got to see that in the book either. Just heard that Sally had told Percy about it. Though it was in an after credits scene where Gabe came back to the apartment, and there was a lock on the fridge, so he breaks it and Medusa's head is in there. Unfortunately, it's annoying because the entire reason how, in the book, how Sally had her head was because Percy sent Medusa's head in a box to Olympus as a cheeky "f you" to the gods for sending him on the quest, and when he was talking to Poseidon in the apartment, the box basically reappeared on percys bed like a magical "return to sender"
I'm so thankful/surprised at this point that you like apparently 1000 other people, didn't say- oh "blank isn't pregnant but s/he always delivers". Like excuse me? Wth?
the books also did the 'positive spin on disability' thing but it was a lot less heavy-handed than the movies..ironically the books did better at "showing, not telling" than the movie's script did

It was certainly interesting to see someone who didn’t read the book’s take on this movie. All the reviews I’ve seen talk about how badly it disrespects the source material but it was interesting to see Alex talk about it as a movie, not an adaptation.
frr me too because people always says “it’s a bad adaptation, not a bad movie” but like it is actually a bad movie there’s so many things that don’t make any sense lmao
I have to say, a lot of the "problems" you had, are explained in the books. for instance the whole "disability" thing, isnt to say "people with disabilities are special" more to show how satyrs and other non human entities in the books hide their non human aspects. there is something called "The Mist" which is like a magical "curtain" that helps as well. the whole "bad smell" thing about percy's stepdad is because he smells of human. in the books, monsters and satyrs have the ability to "smell" beings that arent entirely human, and percy's stepdad apparently smells "so pungently human" that it masks the "smell" of percy being a demigod. hope this helps
Not to mention the whole "US" centered thing aswell, its because the God's shift to whatever land holds the most power, so when greece fell, the went to rome sam thing with the us
Alex meyers may not have read the book But regardless if he did or didn’t, he’s reacting to the movie which left out a lot of details and ruined pretty much everything
What baffles me about this movie is they got Chris Colombus, who may not be the flashiest director but he knows how to work with kid actors and as we saw with the first two Harry Potter films is typically very faithful to the source material (almost to a fault). It should have been a match made in heaven. Instead not only did they age up the characters so that they could be played by adults but they also played so loose with the source material that even the author of the books prefers to pretend the film never existed. It's like Chris completely forgot what made his Harry Potter films so succesful.
Or he was hemmed in by executives. Peter Jackson made both the amazing LOTR trilogy, and the absolute garbage Hobbit trilogy. One was an epic of cinema, one was literal dogshit. One Peter had almost full executive control over, one was constantly hounded by executive bullshit from the studios.
I love this new format of covering movies that don’t actually exist. Super creative! Could you imagine if they ACTUALLY butchered something so beloved this badly? Like what if they made movies of Eragon or Avatar The Last Airbender? That would be craaaazzzyy
I used to love Eragon....but the I found out how much Eragon had basically just big mash of other fantasy novels/series the biggest of which is LoTR, Star Wars and Earthsea all of which are far more interesting and original than Eragon.
@@shridharbiju7370 well yeah. I mean it was literally written by a kid in high school. I love it for nostalgia and also for what it is. Just a good intro point into fantasy for new young readers. It doesn’t need to be more than that. Which is good because, as you’ve pointed out, it isn’t lol
If you read the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, you would automatically hate the first seconds of the movie for making it look pirated but this is very old so I can excuse some errors but ANNABETH NOT BEING BLOND IS SOMETHING I CANNOT PASS.
Upon reading the books years after seeing the movie. I think one of the biggest flaw in Percy’s onscreen character is that he’s very passive, as if they wanted to make him such an audience surrogate that he kinda takes a backseat sometimes; in comparison to his book counterpart. They describe movie Percy as being impulsive, but never showing that kind of behavior, unlike book Percy who makes tons of impulsive decisions as a result of being an active member of the story.
maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but as an 11 year old watching this movie for the first time in 2010 with no prior knowledge of the books, I genuinely thought it was a great time. obviously looking back as an adult I realize that it's objectively a Bad Movie, but as a kid with no reference points or standards, it was pretty fun
No matter how bad this movie is, the casting for Grover was PERFECT. He looks exactly how I would think he would reading the books. Easily my favorite character
This film actually made me read the books because it was one of the few novels back then that combined Greek mythology with modern times. Teenage me, who already loved anything Roman and Greek, thought this concept to be amazing. Also, the music, especially the main theme, is pretty good. It became one of the main reasons why I started liking the Percy Jackson universe 😂
@premiumheadpats4150 there's one that uses the Illiad /Trojan War as main theme. The characters are descendents/reincarnations of the heroes. Main characters are Helen's and Paris' reincarnations. It's called Fates and Furies by Josephine Angelini (If you like romance, this might be something for you, I didn't really like the series, but it's an easy read.) Other than that, I highly recommend Madeline Millers novels (The Song of Achilles and Circe). Plots don't take place in modern days but those retold stories of the Illiad and the Odyssey have a very modern touch. Asterix comics are also a good choice. They portray more the time of which the books were made than the actual portrayed time (50 BC). (Like in Asterix in Britain they play rugby and there's a panel showing the Beatles xD) Hope this is somewhat helpful to you.
@@premiumheadpats4150 There are a few that exist in the Percy Jackson universe. Most aren’t affected by the main series. Theres tons of different gods. If you want to find them look up Rick Riordan Presents.
@@premiumheadpats4150 It's not really a franchise, but there's a game called Stray Gods that takes place in modern day. It's a musical story based game where you make your own choices, so theres many routs that can be taken. I watched game play of it from a yt gamer that I watch and I personally enjoyed it, the story line was really interesting imo. The musical aspect also makes a lot of sense with the story line, because the main character becomes one of the muses, so the musical parts are when she's using her powers on others.
I like how all the stuff alex finds ridiculous make a lot more sense in the book where they actually explain these things. Plus I hate how the movie butcher hades character and his relationship with persephone
I hated Luke’s reasoning for him doing the whole thing in the movie. In the books, he HATED the way that the gods didn’t take care of their children and barely talked to them. Not even to mention the f*cked childhood that Luke had (even worst than Percy tbh). I don’t remember to much from the books, but man his reasons for wanting war is done so much better in the books.
@PersiusKane the thing with hades is that people treat him like he is the Devil because Christianity has hardwired us into seen him that way. It's so sad.

In sixth grade, I speed read the book because we were going to watch it in class, and I like to read the book before I watch the movie. I adored the book and the rest of the series and when we finally watched it in class, I was pissed at how they screwed up adapting the source material. I think that eventually we might be able to get something for hero’s of Olympus, as well as the other series (though I’m aware there’s production for the Kane chronicles to be released on Netflix)

The fact they cut out the bathroom scene where Annabeth shoved Percys head in a toilet and he used the water to attack her accidentally. That's the first time he used his powers, not the river. Also was it too hard to find someone to match Annabeth? It describes her exactly in the book and she doesn't even have the same hair color

12:30 The reason for Olimp being located in New York and all of the action taking place in America is because Greek gods follow "the flame of civilization" - basically the place with the most influence on the culture at any given time. In ancient times it was Greece, in the 2010s when the books take place it's the United States. It's also why Hermes basically runs UPS and Iris has opened a shop with vegan food and wellness products. Also: someone in the comments pointed out that movie Zeus and Poseidon have British accents while they should speak in the dialect of the place they're residing in - Zeus's most likely being New York itself and Poseidon's wherever there's the best sea access.
As someone who’s neurodivergent myself (I have ADHD and am Autistic) I’ll admit PJ doesn’t have the *greatest* disability rep to ever exist. But considering how most other stories pity the mentally and physically handicapped and only use them to make able bodied and/or neurotypical people feel better about themselves, this is definitely MUCH better. I still think it could probably use some more exploration, like portraying that things like ADHD can be both positive or negative (or even neutral!) depending on the situation. But for what it’s worth, it’s a good start. I’ll take any wins I can get.
@@hoaxtaysexactly. sometimes especially as a kid, you want someone like yourself to be a hero not in spite of, but BECAUSE of your differences. i became fully disabled from chronic illness at 15, but remember the Percy Jackson series fondly from when we read them in middle school as some positive and wishful representation for disabled kids, as I now knew I was one. found out even later i have ADHD & likely autism, so them being in there at all just made me fond of it. especially for the time it was written and the initial audience they wanted, it did what it needed to and what was best for that! there’s obviously going to still be problems, but i appreciate the heart at the center of it, as do many other disabled people who read these books.
How do you (should) write disabled people? I'm quite puzzled. From the comments, it's either not focusing too much on the disability or focusing too much on it, how do you find a middle ground?
8:27 YES IT BUGGED ME SO MUCH THAT ANNABETH WOULD NOT WEAR A HAIR TIE. It was literally to make her look “more attractive” but that’s creepy af because she’s supposed to be a teenage girl and the director is an older man smfh

WAIT!?!!? What the actual F?! I totally forgot how Percy just completely glossed over his mom's deletion. Like he was literally treating it like an inconvenience more than anything. Quite literally the weirdest way I've seen someone react to that kind of news.
As a massive fan of the books back in the day, I never understood why they decided to make this movie a fetch quest. Hopefully the remake is closer to the source material.
12:34 The reason given for this in the books is that the gods would move to wherever the power was in the world. They were in Greece for a while, then Rome, and eventually the US
As someone who has dyslexia and ADHD this movie was everything to me. I was about 10 years old when this movie came out and I was really struggling with my dyslexia so to see this type of representation really gave me lot of confidence. Not only that I sucked at reading English, which is my native language, but I was really good at understanding Latin, so I felt like I could relate to Percy Jackson in a way. So yes, this movie may have sucked but it holds a special spot in my heart.
The movies are absolutely awful when you compare it to the books (and still dumb even if you don't) BUT I still have a soft spot for the first one. It was how I originally got into the books and its a fun silly campy movie that I'll watch every once in a while. That being said I'm super excited about the new show coming out! It's been a dream of mine to finally see my favorite series get a proper adaptation. It's so cool to see Uncle Rick writing it and the cast is just perfect, I can't wait!
I remember reading the book (mostly for a school assignment), and so therefore when I rewatched the movie: yeah. This movie left out. Lot of stuff. It’s kind of crazy. I know that lot of book adaptations leave some stuff out which can be understandable, especially since the book is very long. But for this, they left out so much that again, it’s quite crazy!
The books were better and explained a lot of why the Greek Parthenon (Gods, Monsters, etc.) shifts with Western culture. As soon as Percy arrives at camp the movie takes a huge turn from the books. Up until that they got all the major setup and plot devices right for the most part. Highly suggest reading the books. I just reread them and they hold up.
They changed Grover and Annabeth SO MUCH they were essentially different characters. Grover is supposed to be this shy nerdy guy who needs to earn his searcher’s license to find the God Pan. Why would a Satyr need to “earn” horns that grow naturally…? And Annabeth was a badass genius who had a very deep backstory. They turned her into Percy’s eye candy.

Don't get my hopes up, my mom also married a smelly man.

She marrys him so his stink covers percys strong scent been a son of the big three. These things a explained way better in the books.
I love it.
The best books are written out of love.
That a really sweet story and really love hearing how much passion and care Riordan gave towards these books and how much it means to him and his son, I hope they get a better adaption this time.

“If there’s one group of kids who never get popular, it’s hot guys who can’t read” TOOK ME OUT 😂😂😂😂😂
In the books…
3:42 Percy was usually a loser at his school because he befriended the bullied kids, who were almost always disabled (Grover in this book and Tyson later on).
9:30 it’s rare for the big three to have children because after WW2 they aren’t allowed to have affairs with mortals. Which doesn’t really stop them that much as we later on meet two children of Zeus
11:26 Hades never shows up. One monster gets in the camp and it’s a big deal because it’s not suppose to happen
16:00 gods are allowed to talk to their half blood children, they’re just neglectful assholes who don’t care about their kids
15:30 The placement of Mt Olympus moves with civilisation and where the global superpower is
Might want to edit this because Hades was NEVER the bad guy in the books or in Greek mythology as a whole. He just sent monsters to Percy because he too was stolen from and thought it was him.
One child of Zeus. One child of Jupiter.
To be fair on the "doesn't really stop them" thing, as far as we know I think there were only 2 kids of the Greek big 3 and 1 of the Romans, which is significantly less than their kids in Greece/Rome.
The barriers protect the camp against monsters, the gods being considered the "good guys" are allowed.
I mean this is what Rick Riordan(author of the books) had to say about the script for this movie:
"Having said that, here’s the bad news: The script as a whole is terrible.
That is one thing we can agree on: It needs help."

that and they mixed Clarice's (one of the daughters of Ares, who doesn't appear in this film for whatever reason) headstrong, cocky and rather blunt personality with Annabeth's, smart, bookish, and sometimes shy personality.

@@digifreak90their relationship is so healthy, even while the world is actively in chaos, they're chilling in the underworld eating cereal.
as someone disabled who uses a cane (at a young age), i find the disability to hidden power thing to be cheesy, but well-meaning. it was never meant for jaded adults or even older teens, but when youre 12 and struggling with something that makes you so different from other people, it can be a huge comfort.
Mmm yeah 🙂
I know, I love how Rick made things that people are insecure about into superpowers

Rick wrote the series for his son who actually does struggle with both of those, so he could see himself as a capable hero/person despite the learning hitbacks.

The adhd and dyslexia were added as rick son who he wrote the story for original had these problems in school.

@@StarWarsomania Yeah you can tell it didn't matter who directed this film, they were going to have a battle with studio execs.

Do you know of any other franchises that focus on bringing mythology into a modern setting. Personally, I only know of one other author who does that.
@premiumheadpats4150 there's one that uses the Illiad /Trojan War as main theme. The characters are descendents/reincarnations of the heroes. Main characters are Helen's and Paris' reincarnations. It's called Fates and Furies by Josephine Angelini (If you like romance, this might be something for you, I didn't really like the series, but it's an easy read.)
Other than that, I highly recommend Madeline Millers novels (The Song of Achilles and Circe). Plots don't take place in modern days but those retold stories of the Illiad and the Odyssey have a very modern touch. Asterix comics are also a good choice. They portray more the time of which the books were made than the actual portrayed time (50 BC). (Like in Asterix in Britain they play rugby and there's a panel showing the Beatles xD)
Hope this is somewhat helpful to you.

Percy's childhood is better than the other main characters. He literally has sally. The others' mortal parents are either shitty, dead or insane
In the books Apollo tries to make Luke's mom an oracle but Hades curses the oracles so it drives his mother insane.
@PersiusKane the thing with hades is that people treat him like he is the Devil because Christianity has hardwired us into seen him that way. It's so sad.

I’ll take any wins I can get.
i mean the books weren’t written for representation they are more for comfort to neurodivergent people, like rick’s son who has ADHD and dislexia

The reason given for this in the books is that the gods would move to wherever the power was in the world.
