    I'd always figured the reason Emily was sitting there so calmly in the chair the whole time was that she was still under that hypnotic spell that Sarah sang to lure her there. I think the best explanation for this movie I’ve ever seen was in a Tumblr post speculating about what the actors were told during filming. Their theory was that Winnie’s actress was told: “This is camp, just do whatever you want,” Mary’s actress was told: “Your character is basically an evil golden retriever,” Sarah’s actress was told: “Just act like you’re on all the drugs,” and the kids were told that this was a very serious horror movie and they’d be in trouble if they didn’t treat it as such.

    The reason Allison was so chill was because she was a witch too. There was a follow up book where it was revealed that Allison was the descendant of a fourth Sanderson sister who refused to be evil like the rest of her family. • @ithildins

      we read different sequels, then - paige or poppy or whatever their daughter's name was WASN'T the descended witch - it was the new girl who'd moved in (the one they turned into a dog for most of the book) - the better storyline would definitely have been that max and allison's daughter was a witch, since winifred makes the comment that allison is a "clever little white witch" for using the salt circle - i ranted a LOT after reading the sequel book and was highkey disappointed

    I actually liked how they had the Sanderson sisters sort of become more familiar with modern-day culture as the movie progressed (aka, for instance realizing that people stopped believing in supernatural stuff, so when Max tried to call them out at the dance they just played along). Yeah, it was a stretch that they were able to pick up so many things in one night, but it meant it became harder and harder to fool them, which upped the tension in the climax.
    Also, as anyone with a much younger sibling will probably tell you, they can embarrass you to no end in front of your peers. Just absolutely no filter whatsoever. That part of Dani they go so right that it easily made her the best non-Sanderson character.

    The prevalence of adult humor/scenarios in children's media (television and film) in the 90's and earlier probably had a great deal to do with the fact many homes that had televisions only had one and the whole family used it. So, children's shows and movies needed to have something for the adults to not wanna bash their heads into a wall while watching or even allow it to be played in the first place. Like you pointed out, a lot of these adult jokes & scenarios were just shrugged off by the kids. And, if your kid did understand them? You probably already had bigger problems~^.^

      There is actually a 30 year study that came out in 2021 in regards to sex education and prevention of child abuse, healthy relationships, teen pregnancy etc. If the kid understands the jokes, that's not a bad thing. It seems that developmentally appropriate comprehensive education should start as early as kindergarten. So a 9-13 year old watching probably should get the jokes if they are educated. They might not understand certain euphemisms though until they are older or pick up on body/voice cue subtext.
      So disagree that if the kid did understand them that it was a problem. I think people today just assume that puberty doesn't happen till 14 years or something.

    I was 12 when this came out, and I've watched it on Halloween ever since. :) It's the one scary movie I'd watch as a tradition. (I'm an overly sensitive person who hates to be scared, and when I was a kid, my sensitivity to horror was at 10,000%. For kid-me, this was a horror movie.)
    It was an absolutely awesome part of that year for me. I loved it! As for knowing the words "OD'd," Yeah, we were kids in the 90's, and that kind of content was all over the media in the news and whatever, along with schools always telling you not to do drugs, so we learned that term early on. We were kids. Not completely morons. Morons, yes, but not *complete* morons. Anyway, I love this movie, and my 12th year was still one of the best years of my life to date for a few reasons, so yeah. My life went to hell after that for a good... years still going.
    Allison wasn't phased by Dani, because a) she's a girl and b) she's not taking an 8 year old seriously, because kids come with zero filter.
    Hey, the boob jokes were funny! That was classic humor back then. I remember laughing so hard I had to pee at the yabos joke. :D Everyone was also laughing at Madonna's ridiculous torpedo-tits bra in reality at that time. Since that was new-ish, that reference still landed.
    As a kid, I didn't completely get that bus driver (yay for being Ace), but I did understand the very obvious innuendo. Now as an adult, that guy's got so much confidence he's bleeding swag. I still wouldn't go near him, though.
    In my honest opinion, Disney peaked at made-for-t.v Halloween movies with this one. I've yet to see anything else they've made since come close to this. Halloween town was cringy AF, and nowhere near the level of Hocus Pocus.
    This was a fun, creepy, spooky movie that had a storyline, a plot, no character was better than another, (I'm looking at you, Disney's girl-boss fever that makes me want to barf - and I'm a girl!)
    The Hocus Pocus 2 movie they made had a few good parts (like the beginning scene - I'm terrified of spiders, and Mary's roombas, calling back to her being forced to use a vacuum as a broom. :D But 70% of that movie was Disney 2010's cheesy safe-for-the-kiddies, eye-squinting camp so bad you got second hand embarrassment for the actors.

      Just about everyone wears a sweater, leggings or jeans, and crocs and slides to school. Trust me no one is worried about being “hawt” for school. Also you literally don’t have to learn a tik tok dance if you don’t want to. Literally nobody irl cares.

      @MadiganinPeach 2 роки тому +9

      As a child of the 90s, I haven't heard anyone use the term "hawt" since 2006. But even so, that's more of a you thing. There's just as much or as little pressure on people to look a certain way in school, those who wanted to stand out as the "hawt" people, and those just doing their own thing/trying to blend in. I'd say it's nice to not have to worry about keeping up with the latest memes/trends/slang seeing as by like the second time you see or use it you'll have someone telling you that's old news, seeing as there's something new that "everyone" already knows about. I'm grateful to be old enough that when people ask me if I've seen this or that show/meme I can just make some dad-like grumbles about too much to do and naps and stuff.

    With the whole “Them having no reaction.”, and Max’s logic with the black flame candle, I have my theories. For Alison having no reaction, the first case is in school when Max gives her his number, and it’s obvious she didn’t want to make a big deal of it and make the public interaction more embarrassing. And after school, similar story. At her party, with Dani’s comment, I think a similar thing too. She didn’t want to make a scene in her house, during a party, and in front of Dani. So she went with it, and moved on. (Also small rant, but I LOVE how Alison acts like a big sister towards Dani. Constantly watching her, holding on to her, and talking with her. They just met that day, and her and her brother aren’t even in a official relationship until later in the movie/after the movie, and the two already act like sisters.) But the more upsetting theory, is that Alison is just used to dumb comments. She is the pretty and smart rich girl, who stands out in class, loves mysterious Halloween, her Mom ran the famous Sanderson Sisters’ House Museum, she has a big party every year, she seems very social and popular. She probably has a lot of boys crushing on her, and with that, has heard a fair share of rude and dumb things that she had just learned to deal with. Even after Max gives her his number, a random guy basically tells him there’s no chance. He seems like he was in Max’s place once, and made similar embarrassing moves. And now feels the need to speak on her behalf. And for the actual Hocus Pocus stuff, the three of them, and later four of them, are actually all always scared and having big reactions when it comes to jump scares and the witches doing stuff to them. The only time they don’t have a BIG reaction I guess is when they all hear Binx talk for the first time. But at that point, Max had already heard Binx talk and had his big reaction, and for Dani and Alison, after all they saw and experienced already, hearing the random cat Max has had them follow talk is probably not that shocking. Especially since he seemed to be helping them. Especially for Alison. She knows and believes in (At least to our knowledge, because she also says “So the legends are true.”, as if she had doubts.) in Thackeray Binx and the story. She’s the one that recognizes him. So she probably would suspect him to talk more than anyone. And finally for Max’s black flame candle plan, he didn’t believe in the candle. So he thought no matter who lit the candle, nothing would happen. But to the best of his knowledge, Alison believed something would happen if someone lit the candle. And she knew that the person prophesied to bring the witches back would be a virgin. So he thought by lighting the candle, nothing would happen, cause it’s fake. But to Alison, who thinks something would happen, and seeing it didn’t, would realize he wasn’t the prophesied virgin, and that would someone make Max cooler. Cause it was never that it had to be a virgin who brought the witches back, it could be anyone, but it was prophesied that it would be a virgin. That was the only characteristic (if you can call it that) of the candle lighter. But those are just my theories and interpretations. I love this movie and couldn’t help but rant.

    I actually think this movie is a very clever way to scare kids and make them aware of dangerous predators through a fictional and magical story. I loved the movie back in the day and I still do now. There is a lot of realism behind it in my opinion. The kids aren't supposed to fully understand the sexual jokes but they will get the terrifying message of 3 people hunting down kids to cause them harm. I also find it interesting that the 3 dangerous people in question are portrayed by women (which you are more likely to trust as a kid) showing that a potential predator could be anybody.

    The term "virgin" when the witches and Thackery are using it refers to anyone who hasn't been involved in a satanic ritual or bound to magic in some way, but there are still plenty of jokes about max being a virgin by the towns people (also thats the historically accurate, mostly likely celtic, definition)

      Fun fact: During the 1600's it could also mean someone that wasn't married, whereas a 'maid' was a woman that hadn't had sex.

      @maxsync183 2 роки тому +16

      interesting, i never realized that. just thought it was kind of odd how much emphasis there was on sex in a kids movie lol but that does make a lot more sense. it occurs to me that winnie might have specified a virgin being the one to light the black flame candle as a way to ensure that they were resurrected in a time where people were less involved with magic. the townspeople all saw and interacted with magic during the witch's execution so none of them could have lit it. perhaps winnie figured that theyd be more powerful by comparison if they came back to a world that wasnt aware of magic.

Winnie even recognizes Allison for what she is, and at one point calls her a "clever little white witch."

    My sister decided to show her favorite childhood film, All Dogs Go to Heaven, to her students a few years ago....I get a call from her panicking like "has this always been what the film's been about?!" because her 2nd graders were all crying over the dog that died within the first 10 minutes of the film ^^" She learned her lesson to always double check her films before showing it to the kids.

      @@freebirddee2620 It's a great film, I'm not discrediting that. Everything Don Bluth made in the 80s and 90s especially is a classic in my eyes, and I grew up watching them more than I did watching Disney in fact.
      But yeah, the point is we remember things we place focus on as we grow up. And my sister and I watched it at an age where death and gambling and other exposures didn't have nearly quite so many ramifications. We were more focused on the sassy dog doing funny things and ultimately saving the kid in the end. Some kids at that age may have never been exposed to much death in media before (there is something to be said about my own generation becoming desensitized to animated violence much earlier than kids nowadays are) - others may have had to learn all too soon the ramifications of death. It's not my place to judge that, or my sister's for that matter, but it is something to be aware of while navigating what videos to show to kids sometimes. General rule of thumb, of course, being "is that something I'm ready to have to explain to some seven year olds today/am I ready to explain to a parent why their kid came home sobbing today?" 😂

      @@LJ-ij1ly There is nothing wrong with PC ''crap'' done right. Like Moana, or COCO or Black Panther etc. The problem is in drasticly changing source material in ways that show your missing the point or essence of the original story. In hocus pocus 2 they wanted to avoid the demonising of witches because of the very real very sexist witch trials that took place. however nobody asumed the witches from hocus pocus where realistic portrayels of ''witches'' of the witch trials times in history. Everyone understands hocus pocus witches are fictional in the same way vampires and zombies are. It didnt need any correcting unlike say harmfull racial sexist or homophobic stereo types. the sanderson sisters are actualy really feminist characters because they are female characers with personality, agency, plot relevance and above all else, are just amazingly entertaining to watch. They where allowed to be both threatning and funny. In hocus pocus 2 they could have gone for including a coven of white witches having to defeat them, while keeping the 3 sisters as proper unapolegetic villains. Better yet, make sure one of the white witches is a dude, to remove the witch= women stereo type. But the sanderson sisters had 0 reason to change.
      At any rate, I like more diversity in stories, when done right. I dont like it when it's just there to hit quota boxes. I dislike black ariel and black hermione in the same way I dislike white Katara or white Sokka. I dislike black elves in middle earth just being there without at the very least giving us lore reasons. Middle earth is very white. Doesnt mean the whole planet needs to be. If you want to add people of color, or asian, or pretty much anyone not white, just have them be from another corner of that world and migrated to middle earth. Dont race bend European mythologies like greek gods or european fairy tales, instead give us more movies/series about african/Asian etc. mytholigies/fairy tales and historical people and events. Dont fix sexism in older stories by making them completely different people. Just write new stories. (Also learn that women liking romance is not sexism. In fact at this point, especialy in the game industry, I wish you good luck finding AAA games that have a female only protagonist that has a MALE on screen not skipable or missable romantic interest. Romance for women is only ok when it's from the male pov. When we have a female pov character, somehow they have to be gay, have no romantic feelings at all, or have it happen of screen. This comes from somebody who is aro ace in real life, and I am still annoyed that video games seem allergic to straight women as protagonists. And that somehow when a women has no romantic interest or is gay it;s seen as progressive, rather then closet sexism because devolpers and writers are still mostly men who are uncomfortable writing male characters as the romantic interest and would rather write a women for protag to fall in love with, or nothing at all.
      Anyway, long as rant to say, diversity and inclusion and stepping away from harmful stereo types and racist sexist homophobic stuff from the past is important. But they are doing it in all the wrong meaningless insulting pandering ways that just divide peope and ignore the legacies of what came before. If your going to make sequels or remakes, honor that which came before. You dont like what came before? Create something fresh. Like, again, Moana did, like Coco did. fantastic movies. Like spider man did with their dlc and now spider man 2 with miles. Amazing. Not like live action disney movies, not like black hermione or rings of power. Not like race bending historic figires. And not like igoring the essence of your core characters. The sisters where evil, they murderd kids without losing sleep over it. There is no need to even try and redeem that in a sequel because they got treated badly. You want to show how horrible and unfair the real life witch trails where, make a movie about that. Dont try to fuse the campy very fictional witches of hocus pocus with real witch trials. Thats downright insulting to the women who actualy died, implying the witch trials actualy targeted witches, rathern then women who simply got the stamp witch when they didnt conform to norm or spoke up against men (or other women who where more then willing to throw competition or women they where envious of under the bus). Much more so then the hocus pocus witches just being evil fictional witches. They should have kept history and hocus pocus seperated and just focus on the witches wanting to murder children so they can be young and live forever. If they wanted any revenge, it should have been on Dani Allison and Max and nobody else.
