Hey buddy. Yes the 5.3 (L82 rpo code) in the WT, Custom and Custom TrailBoss is the carry over AFM (active fuel management) engine that came out in the 2014 model year trucks. It also has never been included in any of the service bulletins for the bad lifters that the DFM engines have (5.3 L84 rpo code and 6.2 L87 rpo code is also included) (trucks built from September 2020-March 2021, and then I think there’s one out for any model year 2021 DFM engine). So that’s the breakdown on that.
In more simple terms any 5.3 with a 6 speed is an AFM motor. Any V8 engine with an 8 or 10 speed is a DFM motor. The one exception is some 5.3s were built without DFM due to the chip shortage but they still have the same lifters as a truck with DFM, just not the software to activate them.
Now about the comparison, the 8 and 10 speed transmissions don’t really help with fuel economy. They just help with giving a bigger gear ratio range. The 6, 8 and 10 speeds all have very similar top gear ratios. The 6L90 is a much stronger built transmission than the 1500s 6L80 so its probably not as efficient. But the reason the HD truck got 6 less mpg is purely physics. It’s just a lot bigger. It also makes 46 more hp and 81 more foot pounds of torque. I’ll send you a picture of my truck showing my average fuel economy over about 3,000 miles that was mostly just driving to work (28 mile round trip) with two 360ish mile round trips and about 50ish miles towing a small utility trailer. But it averaged 15.1 mpg in those conditions with me driving. From the Facebook groups everyone says speeds above 70 really kill the mileage for these trucks and I can see that. They are like bricks lol. Good video though.

Thanks for the info, I do remember you saying that all the trans have similar RPMS although I felt like I saw one running a little less than these two trucks. I may have been driving at 60 MPH but I’m going off my bad memory though!

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 2 роки тому +4

@@JB_WhoWork The GM transmissions are very similar. The 6L80 and 6L90 have a 0.67:1 top gear ratio. The 8L90 has 0.65:1. The 10L80 (1500 trucks/SUVs) and 10L90 (ZL1 Camaro, V series Cadillacs) have 0.64:1 top gear. So they are within 0.03:1 of each other.
The purpose of the 8 and 10 speeds (and 6 speeds for that matter) is to give a wider gear ratio spread for performance without sacrificing fuel mileage with the need for a short rear gear ratio. With 3 and 4 speed transmission you had to have a short rear gear ratio for the performance because you just didn’t have the gear ratio spread to keep the engine in its power band. They also had a slightly shorter overdrive gear (the 4 speeds, 3 speeds had no OD) at 0.70:1 or 0.75:1 depending on the transmission.
So any fuel mileage benefit you see with an 8 speed or 10 speed will 100% be because the rear gear ratio will almost certainly be taller when compared to a 6 speed. GM uses 3.23 rear gears for the 8 and 10 speed V8s and 3.42 for the 6 speed V8s. The max tow trucks get 3.42 in the 8 and 10 speed and the 6 speed max tow gets 3.73s.

@@Superoldschool74 yeah for the 2019 model year new bodystyle trucks. Any 2019-up truck with an 8 speed or 10 speed transmission will have DFM. If they have a 6 speed they will have the carryover 5.3 engine that has AFM.
The 8 speed came out in 2015 model trucks I believe. At first it was only available with the 6.2. Then for 2016 model trucks it was available on any LTZ trim and standard on High Country.

You'll appreciate it a lot more when it has 500k to 700k on it and is still running. Everybody complained about the 6 liter work truck version of the V8 that GM used when it came out as well because of the fuel economy compared to the others. The fact of the matter is it's designed to be abused and gas mileage doesn't matter in that scenario.

Thanks for the great comparison. My truck is a 2019 Chevy RST Z71 crew cab with the 5.3/8-speed. So far with over 27,000 miles on the clock, it has been a great truck overall. I set the B trip meter every oil change at 5000 miles so I can track my gas mileage over long time frames and conditions. I just checked it the other day and with 2800 miles since the last oil change it has averaged 22.1. Most of my driving is back and forth to work, some in town driving with very little highway miles. It does drop off in winter but still manages around 19mpg for the 5000 mile stretch in cold weather. And it still has the stock Bridgestone AT tires on it. A more highway minded tire may improve this a bit. The only real dislike I have with the truck is the rear shocks. Those off road biased Ranchos that came with the Z71 package were fine at first but now allow the rear of the truck to "pogo stick" over hard bumps. I think I will be upgrading these to some Bilstein shocks soon. I do like the HD truck but I really don't do any thing that requires that level of truck. For me the 1500 is a near perfect fit. I can still haul or tow light loads when I need to and otherwise drive in comfort getting relatively good fuel mileage. I might trade for a newer version at some point. Quite honestly, I like the way GMC carried off the upgrades this year than Chevy did. The 3.0 diesel also caught my attention. Just not sure if the improved fuel economy can justify the higher fuel costs for diesel fuel. I may have to see if I can find one to test drive and make a better decision.

With both of the 2500 HD's with the 6.0 only saw mpg of 11.8 to 11.9. That was the same for the 2013 I had with a 3.73 rear end and the 2016 I had with the 4.10 rear end and that was the mpg city and hwy. Big engine, more HP and torque = less mpg. I was surprised to see the 13.8 at the half way point. 14 mpg isn't super but a lot better than my mpg was in my 2 gassers. When I was towing I saw about 6 mpg nothing high than that. I agree with you on the transmission it should be at least an eight or ten speed for some better mpg when not towing. Thanks for sharing JB good video.

Been as hi as 21mpg doing 53 on a long flat highway. Have the pic to prove it. People need to learn how to drive effectively and not hot rod the engine. Can’t beat a 36 gallon tank for my long runs thru the north east. FYI have the smaller 17 inch tires and the air maxed out on them.

On the same exact 600 mile trip it got 24.4 mpg. I also went the whole trip in 5th gear to cut out the AFM. The rpm at 70mph was 2,200 rpm. I always lock out my Yukon in 5th gear city or highway. Keeps that damn AFM off! 5th gear is still a decent overdrive ratio. Both vehicles had/have 3.55 rear diff.

I'm not sure why the gas mileage in the AT4 was that low. For comparison, we just bought a 2022 Custom model 2500 gasser. It has the exact same tires on it as the AT4 you tested. I looked at the B pillar stickers and ours is 121 lbs lighter than the AT4. We only have a little over 800 miles on ours and we just got 17.1 mpg with about 100 miles back roads and 66 miles on the highway with the cruise set on 73. The one difference that the AT4 might not have that we have is a tri-fold hard tonneau cover. If that's the case that the AT4 does not have a hard tonneau cover, that might be the difference. Just a thought for possible future comparisons.

Towing the same trailer, they both get within the same 8 MPG which is poor considering the small size of the trailer. (23 foot 5,500 Grand Design 17MKE)

Okay, it ain't a lost comparisson, but you made it that way by getting a base line 1500 and a premium 2500.
The 5.3 1500 vs the 6.6 gas 2500 is actually a good comparisson as far as the engine being right for the truck (just like manufacturers put 4 cilinders in their little cars or SUV's).
So here is some objective information...
1500 has a much smaller engine, less HP and torque, is way lighter, much shorter and low to the ground, has the suspension dialed for confort and is primarly made to be a huge 5 seater SUV and then have some utility sor the owner.
Now, the 2500 is much heavier, stiffer ride, longer, taller, has huge tires, more frontal area against the wind, larger engine and is made to first be a working asset and then be a family vehicle.
The 2500 is always gonna have a worse ride, worse handling, worse MPG. But it has some advantages...
It is taller, heavier and has a stiffer frame which makes for a much better place to be in case of an accident. Ir also allows you to ram into a car and move it out of the way in case you absolutely have to do it to avoid becoming a crime statistic. It has the ability to tow a lot more. If you olan to tow a heavy, tall and long trailer, you need an HD truck if not a dually, but a half ton wont handle it.
You also have the ability to load that bed much more than you would be able with the 1500.
So, safety and working ability for the HD truck.
And confort, MPG and overall ride quality for the 1500.
As far as sticker price goes... they are quite close. You can spec both trucks to be almost identical and pay around the same price. Sometimes the 1500 will actually be more expensive than an equal 2500.
So, pick wisely. As a daily in a city, the 2500 is too large to be convenient. But in a more rural environment, a working environment or if you tow on a regular basis, the 1500 is no match to the hd truck.
Now, if someone is thinking about getting both, please ditch the 2500 and go for the largest 3500 you can find with a diesel and consider the posibility of a dually. That is the ultimate work truck. And maybe ditch the 1500 and go for a mid size pickup, you wont miss it if you have an HD truck in the garage.

Your comparing oranges to orangutans man , they might be spelled similar but.., that 2500 isn't broken in yet , has more aggressive tires , weighs a lot more , and is geared lower , what did you expect ? The real eye opener here is that I used to have a 1970 Chevy Cheyenne C/30 pickup , 402 c.i. ( 6.6 liter ) big block engine , turbo 400 ( 3 speed ) automatic , with 4:56 gearing and got 13 m.p.g. ! No fuel injection ,no computer , and no doctorate degrees needed to work on it , over fifty years later , and we can't improve the mileage , but hey we now have cup holders . Big Deal !

The steering and brakes are quite a bit different than 1/2 ton.....vague and takes more effort to hit brakes but you get used to it.......so friggen solid though.....just a beefy truck and love the new height they come standard with.....GM HD are equal to about a 4" lift to their 1/2 tons.......
