  • I just crossed 1500 miles with my 2020 GMC Sierra Elevation Double Cab and I wanted to share my real fuel economy experience. This GM 2.7 Liter Turbo 4cyl engine in the Sierra and Silverado 2019+ pickup trucks is a hell of a motor. I have been really impressed with my truck's fuel economy and how well it performs. Since I now have put on several miles to get a feel for fuel mileage I can happily say the truck is getting 20+ mpg.

Great informative video. I have a 2023 Silverado 2.7 Turbo 4x4 Crew-cab, we recently did a long trip to Seattle Wa Along HW90 driving through Snoqualmie mountain pass. With 3 passengers and roughly 100lbs of cargo (not towing) we managed to get 20.428 miles per gallon (375miles / 18.4 gallon) amazing torque power and performance this engine have. Definitely turbo kick in around 1500 rpm 👍

When my lease was up on my 2017 Silverado 5.3L. , went with the 2.7L , was skeptical at first but then thought about it , the 5.3 had a multi displacement engine and was in 4 cyl most of the time on the highway. So let’s give it a shot , very pleased with its performance best mpg so far 30.2 on a trip. Haven’t towed with it yet but it’s nice not to gas up every week. 23k miles so far and no complaints.

2.7l turbo and sport mode makes this truck very fun. I am a big V8 guy but this truck is very interesting to drive. And I would say they could have gone bigger but then I look down and see 24mpg average. My Silverado whistles like a roller, drives like a car, and hauls like a v8.

12,000 miles on my 2020 4x4 crew cab Custom with 285 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, leveled and lifted. I’m getting 18.5 mpg with 85 octane 100% gas at 4500 feet elevation. My commute is only about 25 miles per day with a little interstate travel. It gets around 16mpg on ethanol gas. Fuel economy goes DOWN at interstate speeds. I currently have a 2016 2500hd with the 6.0. Indont tow as heavy anymore. Rough ride, 11 mpg unloaded=$600 a month in fuel, and only 380 torque has me thinking about going back to a 1/2 ton since they’re so capable now. I got the 2.7 liter and love it. For what I do not much towing but do go in the mountains it’s preformed very well for a 2.7. I did pull a trailer to on a 5 hour drive the load was not supper have or near max what it says it does. But I didn’t notice the trailer at all and fuel it’s what figured for a gas engine pulling a trailer. So far I’m very impress with it. I think everyone avoids it cause they are use to a full size truck been a v8 or 6. But for the price and preforming it’s down very well

under ideal weather conditions - with a bed tonneau - it will be notably better. Also 87 octane is a trade-off ... cheaper gas, lower fuel economy - especially on winter blend. I have an ecotec 2.0 in my passenger car ... on snow tires and idling a lot in winter, on 87 octane - the fuel economy dropped by 15%. With the tonneau cover in summer, properly inflated tires and higher octane fuel - you might see over 23mpg average - even better on the highway staying around the speed limit.

the 2.8 is being neglected. With some minor updates and paired with a 10 speed it would do a lot better. FFS its getting out classed by the 3.0 in the much larger Silverado. By definition a smaller, lighter truck with a smaller engine that has 80% of the power should get better fuel economy, and it doesn't.

I’m getting a 2.7 crew cab tomorrow. Inventory was low, I would have preferred the 5.3. Im trading an 18’ double cab Sierra with the 5.3 for it. Best I’ve gone in the 5.3 was 28.8mpg on a long highway ride. Usually I’m in the 24-26mpg highway. That cylinder shut off works very well, and I’ve modified my driving to get it to cruise in 4cyl mode. Im hoping I didn’t just make a mistake trading my 5.3, but that double cab was too tight with 2 car seats in it

I am having the same issues with my 19 Sierra with the 4.3 V6. Terrible fuel economy because of the big hood and bulkiness of the truck. It's creating too much wind resistance as that big hood and big bulk is trying to punch a hole through the air thus causing the motors to work harder. Here's an explanation:
      gmauthority.com/blog/2018/09/2019-silverado-fuel-economy-why-the-numbers-barely-moved/
Poor judgement by GM in letting this happen when its closest competitors, Ford and Dodge, are getting better fuel economy from similar engines. The big hood and low seating also inhibits visibility. In the base model I have, there isn't even a manual adjust for height. Even a base Cruze has it. I even sat in a Sierra that had a power seat and it didn't make much of a difference as the seat starts off too low and the power version does not life it high enough to get a good view.
I've owned GM trucks for 30 years...this one has been the most disappointing....5 recalls, the radio had to be replaced, and the doors needed to be resealed due to water leaks. Now, I'm getting a hard 1-2 shift in the tranny, a tremendous amount of rattling in the cab when the truck travels over bumpy terrain, and a lot of wind noise. Wish I could trade it in but I'd lose too much money.

Im not sold on the 2.7L.
With 4 cylinders, a turbo charger, and all the stuff GM has done to the engine to coax power out of it. I cant see the fuel savings offsetting the cost of ownership when considering the cost of parts and labor after the warranty is up. If you can afford to get into a new truck every 3 years, then it's probably cost-effective. After 5 years, even with regular maintenance, like most vehicles, stuff is going to break and Turbos aren't cheap.
