Especially if you're new to the finer points of men's garments, the rise of trousers will likely not be your first consideration. The trouser rise is measured from waistband to waistband, through your crotch area.
Low-rise pants typically rest on or just above the hip bone, the medium rise pants usually go anywhere between the hip bones and the belly button, and a high-rise pair of pants or high waisted pair of pants, they're used interchangeably, reaches exactly at your natural waistline which is typically at the belly button.
So why does it matter what the length of a rise is, you might wonder. Well basically, the amount of fabric in the area between your crotch and your waistband has a huge impact on how the length of your legs versus your torso is perceived. A shorter rise makes it look like you have a longer torso and shorter legs. On the flip side, a high rise pair of pants makes it look like you have very long legs and a slightly shorter body.
The second reason your rise matters is when you wear a suit or a jacket with your pants, ideally, you never want the shirt to poke out underneath the buttoning point.
Also, if your shirt is invisible and you wear a longer tie, your tie pokes out from underneath your jacket and with the triangular shape pointing down, it accentuates your crotch even more which of course is bad.
If you follow us at the Gentleman's Gazette, you know we're big believers in classic men's style which often means that you avoid the extremes. In this case, you could argue that avoiding low-rise as well as high-rise pants will always keep you in solid middle ground.
Now one might assume that shorter gentlemen should always opt for low-rise pants but that is not the case. Basically when you wear a jacket and you look at it from a profile, the distance from the back of your collar to the end of your jacket should match the distance from the bottom of your jacket to the hem of your pants. Once you get that proportion right, you look at it in a mirror from the front, ideally without the jacket and you see where ideally you want that waistline to be.
If you're a little stronger in the waist area, a high-waisted pair of pants will help to cover up that extra body mass and nicely drape into your thighs. Meanwhile, low-rise pants would give you an overhang in the waist area, also known as a muffin top, of course, if you have a bigger belly, you have to take that into consideration and maybe let things out in the waist if you opt for high-rise pants.
In general, if you want to look contemporary, a tightly fitted pair of pants without pleats, a low rise, in a very snugly fitting blazer that is rather short is a look you wanna go for. However, if you look for a timeless style, maybe even something that is inspired by the Golden Age of menswear, then you should opt for a medium to high rise.
So what are good techniques or places to find trousers with the right rise for you?
If you truly want high rise pants, you likely will find them vintage, custom made or from small specialty retailers.
If you want to try a mid rise first, you could try classic brands such as Ralph Lauren maybe which often have a mid-rise pair of pants, they also often mention the rise on the detail section on their website. If you can't afford bespoke and you're not sure about vintage, you could also try this trick that Ethan Wong from Street x Sprezza is using, we interviewed him and he's a shorter gentleman who likes to wear high-rise pants, his trick is to buy pants that are two sizes larger than he is then he has the legs tapered taking the top of the waist in but it gives him a higher rise because larger sizes naturally will always have longer rises.

IVE BEEN WAITING ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS
My advice is.. Don't wear high waisted underwear with low waisted pants. 😭😭😭
From personal experience?
Shouldn't your shirt cover it?
Taking notes 😂
Isn't that just basic common sense
People who wear Calvin Klein: 😡😡😡
It‘s frustrating to see an formerly integral part of mens fashion being neglected by the industry. I really struggle finding affordable high rise pants and spend more time than I‘d like in thrift stores. It really suits my body type since I have a long torso and shorter legs. I don’t get why they are so popular in women’s clothing but not in mens. I actually tried women’s pants but they are too wide in the pelvis area. I hope they make a comeback in menswear.
Izod a pretty good brand for higher rise pants made out of 100% cotton.
sad truth is that now days, you will mostly NEVER find anything high rise (on a budget) and if you do find something labeled "high rise" its usually too low still. your best bet is bespoke
I think long torso short legged people look awful in high waisted pants. They just look like one big long flat behind with feet
Thanks to my proportions, I can benefit from a medium rise or (even better) go for a high rise. I love how it gives the illusion of longer legs, perfect for a classic or slim fit outfit.
At the ripe old age of 67, I've decided to dress like an adult. One thing I've started to do is to always wear a vest or waist coat. That hides the height on my pants or jeans, the length of the tie, etc. I have also made another life-changing decision -- suspenders instead of belts.
Yeah and I’m 60 and have always been fashion forward. It’s time to bring back class and style and just bought my first pair of high rise pleated pants in decades.
Low rise is the devil
I am wearing suit pants and t shirt in house and outside the house alwase suit!

Hey, You seem to be from an Arab country, how you wear suits out when its hot? Or its just that you live somewhere like lebanon or Tunisia where it is mild.
I've hated low-rise since they arrived - incredibly uncomfortable. I like the look of high-rise, but suspect I'm medium.
I think sometimes it depends on the buttoning point of the suit jacket. I enjoy vintage suits only, simply because I can have the guarantee of a high rise on the trousers. Yet sometimes the rise is slighty higher than my belly button because the buttoning point on the single breasted jacket is high.
Just go high man, high waisted pants suit anybody.
High waisted pleated trousers are all I wear.
Me too, even so-called 'casual' trousers.
Where did you buy them? I’ve just received a pair of high waisted moleskin trousers from Darcy Clothing and they’re amazing. They’ll last longer than me lol. They feel fantastic. Button fly and I wear them with button on braces. They’re thick and warm so perfect for when winter comes around too. I’m going to get their 1950s pleated wide legged trousers next. Wide legged trousers feel fantastically comfortable. I know this because I have a pair of wide legged trousers by Canali, Milan. I also got a collarless shirt from Darcy, of equally brilliant quality that has a button hole at the back for attaching different style collars.
JAZZ MAN I like the work stuff personally, Red Kaps for me
JAZZ MAN Ooo...I just ordered high waisted trousers form Darcy Clothing. I’m sooo looking forward for them. I love high waisted trousers and I was trying to buy them somewhere. I wasn’t very successful. Expect one trousers to tuxedo which have high waist, I own some middle waisted trousers which are good...but I finally wanted something really vintage and high waisted. And now I bough it. The price isn’t very low but I believe it will pay off.
I remember Canali and back in the days, the quality was much better than Armani when everyone wore Armani suits in the 80’s and 90’s.
I don't like low-wasted pants. And I detest short zippers.
One great thing about high-wasted trousers worn with shirt is that by putting pressure on the waistline it not only helps with keeping the shirt tucked in, but puts the weight of the shirt higher and makes the excess fabric shoot up and make the shirt more roomy at the top instead of making a muffin top. This can be great in broadening one's shoulders and just generally making the upper torso appear larger and more masculine, which works for a more informal, relaxed style.
It's kind of like with pleated skirts, but (as it should) in reverse
I supprt a high rise pair of pants.
If they fit well, oh man! The feeling on your waist is so comfortable and unique.

Yeah, it feels "solid", like it's hugging your body. And it makes me feel more confident ( since I'm not that tall )
Most days the question is "Should I wear pants?" 😁😂
My man was ahead of his time

I discovered high rise trousers when I started doing WW2 reenactments. Fell in love with the look, and the comfort level and really wanted to find that in a more casual style that I can wear every day. I find myself constantly having to adjust low rise trousers, and find them very uncomfortable. Maybe I'll go for a mid rise. It seems easier to find. I'm also suspecting suspenders would be better for me too, because I never had to adjust my pants once during my reenacting time, but in my day to day with a belt I'm constantly having to. Thanks for the video!
I wish high waisted pants would be back in fashion, more comfortable. Growing up our waistbands were actually on our wastes, not on our hips.
That tip about buying pants that are too large, and tailoring them is excellent. One that I've used myself.
High rise is the only way. It looks so bad when people have low rise trousers with their suits, especially if its a three piece suit and the shirt is visible between the trousers and waistcoat.
Prussian helmet always knows
Imagine everyone walking around in super low waisted trousers with their white tie, with both the waistcoat and the shirt peeking out from under the tailcoat. It sounds cool to have a white tie gala at university, but when I see how everyone dresses I just lose faith in humanity. At least I can show everyone how it's done in a vintage bespoke ensemble
I love you Sven, you are awesome in giving advices and you are the most well dressed man I have ever seen.
So high rise is better if you're on the wider side of things.
That explains why I naturally always wanted to pull my pants up as much as possible, despite the fact that they were designed as a low rise, when I was a kid.
I always go for a high rise in dress trousers, and a medium rise in more casual jeans and chinos. I despise the low-rise for how uncomfortable and unflattering it is (specially on dress trousers).
Where do you get your high rise trousers? Only stuff I’ve found is 19th century style and replica civil war-span am war from quartermaster shop.
@@gavinp5940
I get my high rise trousers custom tailored, and as I am a student who lives in a country with low labour cost, I can get my trousers tailored for $15 including the fabric.

Everything old is new again, and everything nerdy is cool again. I prefer medium to high.
Love seeing the pics of Ethan, Spencer, and Jan! They're some of my top style inspo guys.
The 1930s look is the one I want! It is not just the golden age of high rise pants, but fashion as a whole. I especially like the look of the short vests.
Good video! Try being 6'2" with a 29" inseam!
You did a fantastic job explaining rise. My son needs a higher rise to not look frumpy. God bless you for this information!
I have always like wearing my pants high-rise style. It is more comfortable comparing to wearing a mid-rise and low-rise, personally. I feel like everytime i wear a low to mid-rise it makes me have a sort of feeling of it being very slippery and can fall off at any sudden movements of mine, the high-rise gives me that safety feelings and it contracts my belly in making my belly feel easier and more manuverable while the low-rise does the exact opposite
Love the front pleated look.
Very informative and definitely recommend reading the article on their website for more information! Good job with the animations too👍
I've been fortunate to find a mid/high rise flat fronted pinpoint trouser off the rack at Macy's. They're carried under their Travel Luxe line, and the quality is exemplary.
Low-rise trousers are tremendously uncomfortable. I actually own some low-rise, but I rarely wear them. I like to adopt a style that is halfway between classic and casual, and I'm happy to have bought my Levi's Vintage model from the 40s. I am short-medium in stature, and of sturdy build, and wearing low-rise jeans my legs look even shorter than they really are. Some time ago I bought a Prince of Wales jacket and trousers suit, but I realized only after the purchase that the waist of the trousers was tremendously low. There and then I bought a larger size, believing that the problem was that. I only wore those trousers once, and now they're gathering dust in the closet. Unfortunately, high-waisted trousers are a rare item of clothing to find in the catalog of the big chains and I had to spend almost twice as much as a normal trousers to get them; however, those money were well spent: in addition to making the legs appear longer, they streamline the silhouette and are much more comfortable and allow wider and more agile movements, avoiding the terror of every man: the squeezing of "family jewels". After getting used to a similar model of trousers it's difficult to go back to the old type.
Bravo ,Sir! Very informative video. Personally I love high wasted pants and yes , they are very hard to find.
I never knew I should be wearing high rise pants. Thanks GG!
Medium to high rise only, low rise looks good on no one.
Throws off the proportions. And who needs a longer torso?
@@ngtvdlctcs4961 real men have a very long torso
@@snackpup Those real men need to balance their proportions by wearing high rise.
I prefer the look and feel of high rise pants. In my experience if you measure from the seam under the crotch to the top of the front of the pants a high rise pair of pants will yield 12 inches or more, mid rise is 11 inches and low rise 10 inches or less. The Classic cut of Jeans and Chinos at LL Bean are still high rise cut which is the only kind I purchase. They also have 7 belt loops versus 5 which is most common for most retailers and is another pet peeve of mine.
I started liking and wearing high - rise pants when I bought my first Hugo boss jeans. I noticed that Hugo boss jeans have high rise and now I try to only wear them
Great tips and advice. Thank you. I also prefer high waisted trousers and jeans. I love the golden age styles.
Awesome as always. Love and cheers from India.
You are the man, Sven! 👍💪
I've recently started wearing trousers and chinos with medium to high waist, I feel odd wearing my older pairs now that sit a bit lower.
Brilliant with braces and very comfy for a dad tummy
Nice topic, it's a relatively rare topic to be discussed.
I have all three rises in my wardrobe, but I reserve the low rises for casual jeans only, which I would only wear when I wear the top, usually t-shirts or casual shirts, untucked.
am so grateful to you svan for information. your channel is the most informative on mens fashion. thank you.
That shirt you’re wearing in the beginning......I NEED IT. Like now. :)
thanks for this video I got very short legs due to a disability. and i am short in general (1,60m) and i thin high waisted trousers will fit my body type the best. no matter if its a jeans or suit trousers
Love this video. Spot on advice, I need to find a good tailor to get some high rise pants tapered!
I wear long rise trousers in linen, wool and cotton chino styles. Mostly from Lands End.
The whole cut Oxford look very nice😍,are these new😂
My favorite pair is pleated high-rise camel pants from suitsupply. Also cuffed at the bottom.
I always wear high rise thanks for posting.
Well I found I higher rise whether medium or high looks better with suits
I love that shirt and tie together!!
I use different kinds of knots to adjust the length of my ties. I'm very short so this technique comes in handy for me, since most ties would be too long for me with the commonly used knots.
Thank you for doing this video, very informative!
Thanks for watching, Nick! We're glad you found it helpful.

Great and helpful presentation! I never thought to check what the averages are for inseam, looks like confirms I am long waisted as I am about 187cm tall with an 80cm inseam. For me, low rise hits about below the hip bones, mid rise hits on the hips, and high rise on the navel. I love high rise as the hips for me hold up the waistband, no belt to cut you in two.
By the way, I am custodian of a DB suit my Opa bought in the late '40s. It has no pleats, full cut, and cuffs. Also seen other images/illustrations showing the same.
Some of my suits are high rise, mostly vintage 3 piece. Best option when you have a vest.
Great tutorial, thank you.
Even though I prefer a mix of modern and classic elements, high waisted trousers are a must for me (but not too high or else it can look like you have a large gut). Getting my first pair of custom pleated trousers soon and I can't wait. Greatly put, Raphael!
I wear medium to high rise pants and jeans. Usually I have to go 2" bigger and wear suspenders or belt. Luckily I am a short and stockier build (5'6" and about 175lbs) so going bigger also just helps the cut in my thighs and calves be slightly roomier. I rarely need to do much alterations on the legs due to my build. Due to wearing belts or suspenders I often don't need to bring in the waist much because I use those options. However that is a great tip and I will consider it when I wear vests to avoid the belt faux paux. Thanks Gentlemen's Gazette.
I think trousers with a natural rise are always best because there is less movement at the waist, and your hips act as a natural barrier to keep them up. Plus I think a low rise can look awkward and disproportionate. With a full rise you get form and function.
As bloke that lost a big amount of weight years ago I am trying to figure where my trousers should sit
Thank you mate for you video.
Thanks Raphael for your attention 2 detail 😎
yeah that was an interesting looking tie, i like it.
What a fantastic video Thanks for sharing attention 2 detail Raphael
Watching this high-rise presentation puts me high. I am overdue for a high-rise collection.
I buy my trousers one size larger, anticipating to tailor them high for good seat mobility and better suit silhouette.
It would not be a stretch to assume that slim fit, low rise, and tighter fitting clothes in general are pushed by the industry in order to keep profits up by producing off the rack clothes that require less fabric to make.
Not to mention trying to make proper-fitting garments seem obsolete.
Some variety of suits including very comortable high rise pants is a must. Especially if you wear suits seven days a week.
I’m older and have been fashionable since the early 80’s. I was wondering why high waisted and pleated pants went out of style about 15 years ago. I just came across a pleated high rise used slim Armani Exchange pants and they looked great and priced right. So bc of that, I wanted to do some research on high waisted pleated pants. I’m going ahead and going to buy them bc they are now harder to find, but the younger set still stay away from them bc of the old man image. But what many young folks don’t know is that not all wore clothes like geeks and were stylish back in the days.
Very informative video - thanks for taking the time to explain. One question though; what size turn up's are on your trousers in this video? Thanks again
When you wear a jacket the trouser should atleast be above the bottom button of it (of the usually two buttons). I see so many people, especially at my school, who wear it below the bottom button and it just doesn't look right.
Two online stores that cater to vintage look pants are the Historical Emporium and Darcy's. Darcy's are mostly brushed cotton and therefore less expensive.
I have several high waisted pairs with suspender buttons, a fish tail and cinch at the back for tightening them like old style pants and I wear them with vests so you can't really tell how high the waist is. I have two pairs made of cotton canvas with brass suspender buttons, one grey striped pair made of a wool ,rayon and cotton blend and one pair of old style denim jeans with suspender buttons and a cinch at the back.
I have always had issues with sizing when it comes to pants. I have a 34 inch waist and 35 stomach but modern style low waisted pants always seem a bit big for me in a 34, so probably a 33 inch waist would fit me better but you don't normally see pairs in that size only even size waists 32 or 34 inch. The high waisted pairs I have are 34 and 36 inch waist. I bought them as I sometimes find wearing a belt a bit uncomfortable and prefer suspenders, but don't like the look of the clip on suspenders.
The two pairs of cotton canvas pants are in size 34 and fit me well and sit on my stomach with just a little bit of a gap. I wear them with same color cotton canvas vests and that looks fine. The denim jeans are a 34 and also sit on my stomach but are too tight to fit me. The most recent pair I bought was the grey striped wool blend are 36 and also sit on my stomach and fit OK, but the gap in the waist is just a little wider than I like. I need to get them tailored anyway to shorten the legs so they fit me, so I am going to see if I can get the waist adjusted if possible.
I personally like High waist Pants & Jeans🔥
I always try to wear high waisted pleated trousers. Usually the drop looped trousers from the 40s/50s
Great video! Keep the good fight!
A good work around for longer tie backs is tucking it into your shirt rather than your pants. This resolves the tie back showing below the tie but can make your tie knot somewhat off kilter if you aren't paying attention to it during the day.
because of this kind of strait frowadness i became a subscriber
Can you recommend companies you use to purchase the trousers you have in your wardrobe please?
I need some high rise pants!
Classic and classy. And I love it when you refer to the awful "Muffin top!"
Great video. Only thing stading out to me in your outfit as a little odd, or maybe outside of the ordinary awesomeness, Sven, are the shoe laces showing out somewhat messily (one end much longer than the other).
Thankyou. I've always preferred medium to high rise! I'm 182Cm, never liked low-rise!
Great video I personally like high rise trousers I do have just one question are fishtail trousers normally associated with high rise cut pants thanks for passing on this helpful information!
Generally yes as they are made to be worn with braces and suspenders (which look best with high rise trousers).
Can a low contrast vest be a remedy to the visible shirt problem? It will always cover the bottom half of the shirt and the end of the tie, and do not break the flow of the suit, just like a high-rise pant. (If you do not have a high-rise pant of course.)
Would love to see a more in depth video on open vs more closed quarters in jackets.
This video really makes clear the why's about pant sizing and rise. I have long legs and a shorter torso, so according to your advice, I would benefit from a lower rise. The problem I have with lower pants is staying up :) I suppose I need to start wearing suspenders... ?
What do you think of navy buttons for a navy suit rather than black buttons?
Nice video
I wear vintage clothing from the 1940s to 50s. So it's high rise for me. Although, Fred from 'I Love Lucy' wore his pants so high you'd think he was a zoot suiter.
Used to like low rise, but then I realized not only is it annoying to keep pulling up my pants if belt isn’t tight enough, but shirts go untucked easier, and it makes my legs look shorter. Mid rise, please.
Great points, Raphael. I much prefer medium and high rise trousers because they are more comfortable for me. I’m about 5 ft 7 with a 28 inch inseam. Can’t stand the tight-fitting low rise junk...
would you make a video of dress code attending Opera theater?
Raphael is much taller than I had imagined.
As on the other hand I am a gentleman of short stature and I benefit from the High-Waisted Pants, and even without knowing the technical reasons why that is the style that I usually use
I wear high waisted jeans. And trousers.. reason is i have a slim body but i have love handles that pop out so.. higher waisted .. really helps hide my imperfections
Where can you find high rise men's trousers in Canada? What brands sell them?
I love high rise pants and jeans as well but its hard to find anywhere nowdays
Any recommendations for good brands to buy high rise or hogh waisted trousers? Ive been getting mine from Spier and Mackay and they are amazing but are there more affordable options? Or just different options?
