- Who knew sliding around dirt roads in an air-cooled 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera would be so satisfying? Nicole Johnson drives the safari-style "Overland 911" on fast rally roads and reminds owner/builder Scott Birdsall why integrated skid plates are a good idea.
MORE ABOUT SCOTT BIRDSALL:
A professional race car driver and Pikes Peak World Record Holder, Scott is the owner of Resolute Motorsports and Chuckles Garage, and has built vehicles for clients around the world. Scott is well-known for his Pikes Peak diesel truck, Old Smokey, and has been featured in many major magazines and on television shows both domestic and internationally.

Nicole is the real deal. Her passion, enthusiasm, and sincerity for life is intoxicating. Looking forward to many more...
Thank you so much!!
Yes, definitely is admirable
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour and you are so hot woman 😘let's not forget that
Nicole, you’ve driven vdubs. The Karmann Ghia was known as “the poor mans Porsche” for a reason. You are basically driving a next level VW there. Air cooled goodness. Air cooled engines like higher RPM because it is more cooling!
"All you need to start is your own 911." Sure, I will pick one out of my stable-full of Porsches. I love this show.... ALL the episodes Nicole has skill, personality, enthusiasm, and gearhead geek knowledge. What a great combo. It is obvious she LOVES what she is doing. Keep it coming....please!
Thank you so much..glad you are enjoying!
She's funny, when I was a kid I had dirt bikes and atvs. One of my little female friends used to race dirt bikes she was a lot of fun. Some cool toys and a cool chic. Good times !
Real Porsche purists know about Porsche’s rich rally heritage and love (or at least appreciate) safari 911s. Sadly the air cooled 911s have gone up in value so much, it’s been tough to find a donor car for my safari project.
Love this channel Nicole, keep the great content coming!
Thank you for watching..glad you are enjoying our channel!
Brilliant
The best one yet. I love how Scott stayed cucumber cool when you started to geek out over him. But I get it... dude's fully legit and his cars are rad, so he doesn't hafta front.
He's a pretty cool guy for sure! Thank you for watching!
Nicole, you are the “Bad Ass”. Oh yeah. Just introduced to your channel and......KUDOS !!
Me 67 yr young retired Union Ironworker that’s raced, flown, and lived. Stay young, stay lively,
enjoy every moment! 😁😎✌️
Thank you!! I'm so glad you enjoyed, and happy you found our channel!
That was fun. Let's do this again, minus the poison oak.
Hahaha!
"It feels like it's on pavement...slippery pavement." This car is almost impossibly cool.
Thank you for watching!
probably my favorite automotive channel.
Thank you..so glad you like it!!
as a kid i always loved the 70's & 80's rally spec Porsches , the sight of them on the Paris Dakar with a sand - tail is something else .. and this looks & sounds like a modern homage
Thanks so much for watching!
Love the ponytail. .. car..I mean the car...I would never expect one of these to be set up this way. These videos are so interesting. . Love it.
Glad you like them..and the ponytail...car..I mean the car..haha! Thanks so much for watching!
“You have a skid plate for a reason!..” LOL.
What a trip. Another great video.
Glad you enjoyed it..thank you!
These annoy purists so much, but I love it more because of that lol
That’s funny. Most of that annoyance can be attributed to a very narrow point of view, “…a Porsche is a dadada and nothing else!!” My mechanical drawing class was fortunate enough to get a 4 hour tour through the Zuffenhausen factory in 1964, just as the 356 was fading away and the 901/902 (soon to be changed to the 911/912 due to a copyright infringement lawsuit from Peugeot.) was being introduced. For a 16 year old kid it was fascinating!! I must have worn that tour guide’s ear off asking questions.
Nicole is a very rare interviewer/car nut. It’s refreshing to watch a woman’s approach without the blaring personality that seems to be so common on other channels. A charming personality backed up with a vast car knowledge makes her channel stand out. Really interesting cars and people are her usual fare. I’m sure there’s a long line of viewers awaiting the next UA-cam notifition!
Thank you so much for your kind words..and thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
not really, the 911 safari is a legend in the Porsche fanbase, and its great that its being used for overlanding.
Love the ponytail. .. car..I mean the car...I would never expect one of these to be set up this way. These videos are so interesting. . Love it. It looked like ya go a bit of your own medicine with this dude driving.OH MY GOSH...QHHHHHHHH CRAP!!! Great camera angles as usual.
Air cooled 911s are cool. You hear all the sounds, just a real gem.
Totally agree with you! You feel it in your gut.. a very satisfying experience!
Always blown away by this show! My Favorite of 2021 BY FAR!!
I'm so glad you liked it! Thank you!!
Awesome! It was fun
I have only seen a few. The episode with the Blue Bug was funny. The car is the coolest badass street legal bug that hauls ass. Watching the episode and seeing them flying around holding on to whatever like holly cow. made me laugh. I need some toys and adventure !
11:07 OMG The way she looks at him! Nicole keep up the quality stuff! Love the authenticity.
Thank you..glad you liked it!
Vancouver, BC: Nicole keeps it real without pushing the "S"appeal past eyebrow raising: Smart, professional, and a nice balance of tech, humor and passion: Well done, worth watching !
Thank you!!
as a passenger you are hilarious....as a driver you got the other passenger quiet. this is another episode that needs al least three times watching, still it wont be boaring
Glad you liked it. Thank you!!
crazy how this girl has NO fear in driving (or she is hiding it very well) Love seeing how cool it is a girl can have that power behind the wheel and drive so calm
This makes me want to “overland” my kid’s Nissan Juke. Great work, as always!
Do it! Haha!!!! That would be fun! And thanks for watching!
Super quality content. Stumbled onto this channel yesterday and every episode is top notch. Authentic, entertaining, educational and the cool factor is off the charts. For an off road enthusiast this is GOLD.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you are enjoying. New episode coming soon!
I've always had a deep affection for the G-body 911's and rally. That is just a thing of beauty!
Yes it sure is! Thanks for watching!
The only thing missing was a car chase from Rosco P Coltrane and his dog Flash great driving skills Daisy Love love love it 😁😁😁😁😁😁 great video
Haha! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. You just made my day!
Yesss I did rallying a lot before!! Would love to get back at it but...life & family...Tq so much for sharing this!! bad ass build again and pure fun to watch
Thank you..glad you enjoyed watching!!
That is one badass 911...and Nicole you nailed it driving for the first time on the "slippery pavement" as he called it!
Thank you so much!
I learned how to drive on logging roads in a ‘66 C-10. At 80 mph it feels like 140. I swear, no guardrails, signs, stripes and you are way more attentive behind the wheel. I kept waiting for you to drop the Cole Trickle Days of Thunder line……”I’m dropping the hammer “
Haha..If it was my own car I might have! Thanks for watching!
Love seeing Nicole's reaction in the passenger seat made me want to feel the power of this 911 on the dirt! So cool a girl can get in and drive a car like that the way it was meant to! WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!
Thank you! You would love it!!
Insanely cool sweet renovation and restoration I'd buy that
yup! all day, love my nine-eleven's of this era street, track, dirt--awesome just awesome; love this mod! excellent vid Nicole, excellent build Scott!
Thank you very much. So glad you enjoyed it!
Way to go Turbo!
Best video y'all have posted yet! My highlights:
10:02 Let's just go drive this thing!
10:11 I'm going to drive it
10:28-11:55 OH MY GOSH...OH SH_..😱😳😂
11:00 Oh yeah, you're a race car driver!
When you got behind the wheel, it was all business. Now I want to see the NJD rally team. A little more seat time and you've got it.
I would do that to my 911 in a heartbeat, if I had a 911.
Wow..thank you for the nice feedback. I'm so glad you enjoyed watching!
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour I am also incredibly impressed by your engagement with your UA-cam community. As good as the NJD content is, your consistent and sincere interaction is what brings people back. Well done Nicole!
I find when you drive your facial expressions show focus, enjoyment and the right amount of fear/respect that keeps you from crashing a car you're not familiar with.
I would totally let you drive my car ;-)
Greetings from Germany.
Thank you, I really appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
" Baby you can drive car " I love the show your character brings a lot of fun to the show. I like to read the comments when I'm on UA-cam and I see you reply to all your fans comments. That's great of you to do. The show is great because the host is great !
“You know when you get in a new car it feels strange for a minute….”
Proceeds to make crazy eyes 👀 ❤️
Nicole, if I had a 911, yes, I would absolutely want it set up like that. I own a 72 CJ-5 and a 84 Chevy K10 and I enjoy off road, so yes, I thought that was so badass! Loved the crane and the other heavy equipment in the background by the way. Your laughter and sense of humor make each of your adventures so unique. I was smiling the entire video. Thanks for the great work that you and your team put into each and every video!
You're welcome..we all appreciate that! Thank you so much..glad you are enjoying our channel!!
Love it! Looks like a very expensive way to have a shitload of fun!
I love your blush in this video. It says you loved riding in that car. Or, that you clapped your hand to your face one to many times.
That had to be way too much fun Nicole. My favorite car on dirt. Realy!
Thank you. Yes..so much fun!
Absolutely! Autonomous driving is just another way not to feel. Great video Nicole! Scott, Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching..glad you enjoyed it!
I love the show! You get to see everyone’s pride and joy.
Very true! So much passion goes into each one of these amazing cars! Thank you for watching!
Wow! A new number one on my wish list of dream cars.Ideal for our conditions here in Australia. Great video and when Nicole took the wheel, well that was double Wow! Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for the nice compliment!
Love the 911 and would totally do that to one! Scott..”we’re on a guy’s dairy farm so we can’t hoon too hard” Scott 1 min later taking the turn on 3 wheels while throttle steering 🤣🤣🤣
One of my favorites so far and that car and both of you are completely bad a$$! Nicely done!
Haha..that's what happens when you get behind the wheel of a race car! Thanks for watching..glad you enjoyed it!
I commute to work like that.
It's always an up part of my week to watch NJD your love of driving ,the interest you have for the car and their owners is unrestrained and contagious. Good on ya Nicole!
Thank you so much...I appreciate that!!
"When in doubt, throttle out" Ha Ha love it!
Thank you..glad you enjoyed it!!
Oh hell yes I want one!!! I still remember when the 911's came out, still one of best looking cars to be built
Man that Overland looks like awesome fun!
Once you get used to the Oversteer quirks they can be hammered hard not unlike the other German rear engined Bug (But with more than enough power to haul your bum out of trouble) and are an awful lot of "I think I just Pee'd a lil" seat of the pants motoring enjoyment, I LOVE the small touches like the Carerra Fabric and the minimalist interior but the engineering is truely impressive and obviously underpins the whole design and execution.
As a former Rear wheel drive Club Rally guy I just Love it!
Thanks for watching. I totally agree..this vehicle is amazing and a whole lot of fun to drive. Glad you enjoyed!
@@NicoleJohnsonsDetour Im glad you shot this for us to enjoy lol
Gotta say I was watching your face when you were in the passenger seat and early on it was gorgeous! Drivers make interesting passengers lol
I never wanted a 911 'til now. I've only recently started watching Nicole's videos. There's a common thread among the owners of the vehicles. They respect your knowledge and talent. They all seem rightfully confident in your ability as a driver.
Thank you for watching!!
This is by far my favorite carchannel. The way you take the time to listen to the owners, ask the right questions we want to know the answers to and respond with lots of knowledge, awesome. You and Johny smith are providing car enthusiasts with the best info.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you enjoyed watching!!
It is always fun to watch Nicole driving all these different cars, and I can understand that the owners of the cars love it too.
She adds a unique perspective to what is fundamentally just a sophisticated heap of metal
Thank you for watching!!
This was so epic I had to watch it twice through! Nicole starts off enamored yet almost polarized until (in true Nicole fashion) she gets behind the wheel and gets into her "zone". She almost always startles the vehicle owner/builder with her amazing driving abilities, vehicle control, and focus... Almost like a Jeff Dunham & Peanut joke... "I will never blink!"
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I love lifting cars and driving on dirt. Love this!
Awesome..glad you enjoyed it!
Now that's cool !!
I am now binge watched these, videos. Nicole I could listen to you talk all day 🤣
Wow, thank you..glad you're enjoying them!
Very fun video and very cool 911. Excellent driving! That looked fun and stressful at the same time! To answer your question I own a 1995 993 cabriolet and since I don't have a boat load of money and it's in near perfect condition I would not turn it into a safari 911. Maybe I would if I had a 996 (1999 to 2004) that had been in an accident then sure why not off road it as it looks like a blast!
Thank you! It was so much fun that I honestly didn't want to stop! Thank you for watching!
Go Nicole! Awesome video. keep them coming!
Thank you so much!
Stumbled across this channel yesterday... Viewed the Subaru powered Super Beetle... Now this! GREAT content, well-done, just the right amount of everything. I'm hooked.
Awesome, thank you! Glad you like it!
The most beautiful thing about Nicole is her Innate mechanical understanding and attitude. Seriously!! 😁
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Seriously, Innate? Man this Lovey Lady toiled with gritty hands everywhere with her mechanics, she worked hard studying this stuff while racing.
@@CenturyPHirstCorporationInc - Do you even know what the word innate means? Look it up and you’ll discover that I’m paying Nicole a major compliment.
@@ttocselbag5054 Existing in, belonging to, present in an individual from birth, native, inborn.
You did a great job on this one Nicole, maybe the best one yet. You’re fun, engaging, smart, and a badass behind the wheel. Fun to see how you two switched off on the intensity role when you were each behind the wheel. There’s nothing more fun than driving on a hard, loose surface and it looks like you had a ball. Hats off to you... you’re the real deal.
That's very kind of you..I'm so glad you enjoyed watching. Thank you!
Scott is the man! Love is rigs!
I agree! Thank you for watching!
Thank you!
Awesome. Thanks for spending some time with us at Fanfest yesterday. It meant a lot to my son and I...
Of course! It was my pleasure! Thanks for checking out the video with me and Scott!
You are so wonderfull and your show really decelerates me. I like that you not only talk about this insane machines and drive them yourself. Highlight 2021 on UA-cam!
Glad you like them! Thank you!
That is all kinds of awesomeness! If I had a Porsche that would definitely be the one!🔥🔥🔥
You and me both! Thank you for watching..glad enjoyed it!
Another awesome video from Nicole! Does anybody else just LOVE the look on Nicole's face when she's driving these amazing machines??! A combination of excitement..and TERROR!! There was one section in the video where her eyes are literally bulging!!! So wonderful to see someone with such enthusiasm. Keep 'em coming :) Hello again from the UK!
Hello to you in the UK. Thank you for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it
Cheers
UA-cam's algorithm brought me here. Think I'm now a fan.
That drive looked so fun.
It was!!! We're so glad you found us..glad you enjoyed watching!!
once again Nicole and crew hit it out of the park. I have seen a lot of drivers , both male and female and Nicole is competent, top 10% . .. the 911. is wonderfully adaptable to many variations. it's an everytool. by itself, it can do as fairly good job, but once the specialists get their hands on it. watch out. This is amazing since they are still working with a 1930's design. .
Thank you so much for the nice review. We really appreciate it!
💖the Blooper & Nicole rocks!🤟🤟
Thank you!! We're glad you enjoyed watching!
Your content never disappoints. What a way to run a 911! That air cooled howl and mean look suite that super car well! Great video Scott and Nicole. Keep finding these gems for us!
Thank you for watching, glad you liked it!
the ultimate gamer machine
So fun! I love how Nicole knows her stuff.
Thank you so much! It was a blast!
Liked and shared!
Thank you!!!
I love Nicole’s videos! And love the Rally 911. I wish I could fit in one (6’9”). I would love to use that 5 point harness.
Haha yeah, 6'-9" is a wee bit tall for a Porsche but you would get lots of fun looks! LOL Thanks for watching!
This so awesome...best of both worlds...thanks for finding all the "Not your dads car" cars 😎🏁
Glad you enjoyed it! This was one of my favorites so far! Thank you for watching!
Amazing car and props for the Tropic Thunder reference Scott. Another great show Nicole. Nice driving as usual.
Glad you liked it! Thank you!!
One of my favorite flicks lol
MTH1217 How about the Eat Me on the belly pan .Maybe a homage to Animal House.?
I don't know much about cars, but I would be terrified to drive a Porche on that offroad track! As always Nicole, your reactions are my favorite entertainment!
Well, glad I could be of entertainment value! LOL It was a good mix of terrifying and exhilarating! I think you'd actually enjoy it, Suzanne! Have Danny get you one!!
Recently discovered your channel, and I'm impressed. Love the fact that you're not only showing us these cool rides, but you're driving them. Fearless!
Welcome and thank you so much! It's a fun journey at the very least!
Nicole need to take a turn in a Canepa 959. Can’t wait for that episode. 911 with 850 hp
That would be fun! Thanks for watching!
Nicole is Ace in my book. Scott is da Man! Now, can you do that build to my 83 GEO? LOL!
Thank you!!
thank you for the french subtitles !
Awesome episode and machine! I totally love the good old air-cooled Porsches... Fantastic ride and shots! I really enjoyed it. Great job, Nicole and all the team.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
You did it again! Of course, I find you immensely attractive BUT these videos rock. Super polished. Great “guests.” This is TV quality.
Wow, thank you! It's comments like yours that inspire us!
Another nice episode. I’m so glad I found your channel, you’re awesome!
Thank you so much! We appreciate you watching!!
What a machine! Scott made that thing dance too!
He sure did! He's an amazing driver. Thank you for watching!
Nicole is an excellent interviewer, I enjoyed climbing under the car
Haha..thank you, glad you liked it!
Another great video Nicole! I drove a 911 rally car built for the Safari Rally once, such a brutal car. You're lucky to experience this one, it looks amazing!
Thank you. It was a new experience for me and totally awesome!
Unbelievable! I’d do that in a heartbeat, if I could afford it in the first place. If I lived off-road I’d take it to work everyday, wonderful, you find the most unique stuff, good work Nicole!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Of course I would do that to a 911, this would be the whole reason to have one, but that would require me owning a 911. Love your videos!
Thanks for watching..glad you are enjoying!
This was a really fun episode. It built. Like they loosened up and just had more and more fun as the show went on.
Glad you enjoyed watching...we appreciate it!!
I peed myself a little bit watching this video! You rock!
Haha! Thank you..glad you enjoyed it!
Those rear mirrors remind me of the TBK mirrors on those Japanese Mid Night club Porsches 🤩
Definitely OG RWB inspired 😍👌
They are inspired by rally cars of the era
This just shows what is possible out there….sky is the limit now. I knew they made carbon fiber bodies for these, but again, this is another level. Those cattle guards are what skid plates are made for. 10 holy craps at least in this one
Thanks for watching..glad you enjoyed it!
Super cool. Nicole, the first day you told me about the Detour concept, Smokey from Pike's Peak was one I was telling you about needing to drive! Very cool you ended up connecting with Scott after all! Another great video...each one get's better and better productionwise...all have been amazing cars and were a fun watch. Keep of the good work Detour Crew!
🔥
Thank you Dustin!! Keep your thinking cap on... I love the ideas you come up with!!!
Nicole this was fun to watch, appreciate the content you and your team is putting out.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it!
Too cool. I've always wondered what it would be like to make a Baja Buggy out of a 911. Now I know. 😃
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
I could feel flat boxer on every bit of the drive! My only experience is a couple of old beetles but I know I could do 911 just fine ❤ Thanks for the virtual ride
Thank you for watching...we're glad you enjoyed!!!
next time i'm behind the wheel of my 2010 Mondeo.... i'll be thinking of this clip...awesome
Thanks for watching..glad you enjoyed!
Scott's right, that engine sounds AMAZING!! Love the content and channel! New sub from southern California.
Awesome! Thank you! Glad you are enjoying!
Saw this a few days after watching the new Morgan CTX. Such awesome cars that I would never get to use the full potential of in real life.
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome job as usual. Another cool car that you would love to have in your garage. Enjoy watching keep up the good work!
Thank you! But it would be no fun at all in the garage! 😂
We need to crowd fund a 911 for Nicole. Way rader than Emilia’s C8!!
Haha!
That is an amazing car! Please keep the great content coming. You are an amazing driver Nicole.
More to come! And Thank you for the kind words!
Scotty got me to buy an 82 SC after I saw this one!
Awesome!
Cool Ride. Porsche 911 is a legend car in every sense. The 911 turbo is one of the best cars ever build. I love it.
Thank you for watching!!
