  • My 997 cupholder door would not latch. I was determined to try to fix it before shelling out $300 for a new cupholder. I ended up fixing it with just a little 3M tape!
    3M tape I used - amzn.to/2RvZyu3
    Torx set - amzn.to/38evKsO

Regardless of genre, this is one of the best videos I've seen on UA-cam.

Okay so i had the same issue with my 2007 987S, i removed the cluster unit and opened it up to find the same, no damage, no wear and nothing missing so i tried the same ideas but still wasnt working correctly so i thought whats missing now that wasnt missing when it rolled of the production line 13 years ago?? Then it hit me GREASE!! white grease! Over the years the grease has moved into the corners so not doing the job, i was convinced of this after i stuck some foam tape on top of the white track as instructed but mine overlapped one side and rubbed slightly on the housing causing resistance and it started working 9/10 times! S i removed all tape and packed with grease,i didnt have white grease to hand so normal grease had to do and hey presto 10/10 FIXED!!! With no grease the runner pin wants to stay at the top of the white track becuase of good ole gravity but from closed to open its supposed to go from bottom to top as designed, a little grease helps feed the runner pin down to up when opening and then closing due to resistance and it stopping the white runner track dropping! So top tip is re grease!!

Nice! Mine looked bone dry so I didnt think of using heavier and stickier lubrications

Two screws, dab of grease and the unit gets serviced.
Is that a dealer trade secret?

mine hasn’t worked in the five years I have had the car. Squirt of grease under the cam and it is working fine, every time. Thanks for that!

Also, when I fixed mine, it just required a single piece of the clear heavy duty sticky tape on top of the cam - pushing it down ever so slightly. I found no need for the second piece of tape on the side. It works perfectly every single time. Did not take the backing of the small piece on the cam, as you don't want it to stick to the lid of the cup-holder. thanks agin for this video!!!

I had a slightly different problem with my 987 Cayman. As here, the cover was hanging down but in my case it was the little lug on the door that was broken.
The guy who'd owned it before me had made an unsuccessful attempt to glue it but of course it was hopeless and he had somehow jammed the cover shut and I didn't notice it before I bought the car. Taught me a lesson!
Anyway, you can remove the unit, as done here, and remove a couple of springs either end of the centre part of the cover (there are three parts to the cover with two smaller parts at either end of the unit - leave the springs in each of the smaller parts at either end) and you'll find the springs in the small cover parts at either end are strong enough to hold the lid in place.
It won't operate in the way it was designed to - you'll have to pull it open rather than pushing the cover to open it - but it will work.

Great fix and most enjoyable video. I actually watched it another time just for fun after fixing mine. Where by "fixing" I mean it works as well as yours does. Which is a lot better than it worked before.

Thanks, I'm also a 987 owner with the same problem. It is amazing how many of the interior accessories do not work well as a result of being made from cheap materials or unreliable engineering. I would expect much better from an expensive German vehicle.

The cup holders are designed and made by an outside supplier to Porsche. In a modern car, 70% of the content comes from supplier companies.

@@davidgold5961 well they certainly are flimsy and unreliable in function. Not being able to reliably open and close the door is very common.

Is it supposed to be tighter when it is closed? That would look a little cleaner.

Mine opens and closes ok but it isn’t flush when closed. Not a tight door. I don’t drive it too often or have a beverage. The cup holders aren’t too secure either. Difficult to drive stick with beverage anyway.
