IT JUST GOT WORSE! Glad we have a NORDHAVN! Trawler life at sea
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 гру 2023
- Join us this week aboard mermaid monster as we cast the lines and leave Boston Harbor. We had such a wonderful time in the city but it is getting cold and it is time to head South for the winter months. Weather gets really unpredictable this time of year out on the water. Forecasts are not very reliable and you have to be ready to take it on the chin, which is hard to do when you have little kids aboard. I feel like a bad parent every time I put the kids in situations that are uncomfortable even though I know it’s going to be ok overall. We love to hear about your bad weather stories, please leave us a comment below. We decided to do an overnight down the Long Island sound and then settle in Port Washington so we could head into NYC for a day. Please enjoy this episode you guys, we are so glad you are here.
Cheers

Re: kids at sea……In 1999-2003 my family, plus my best friend and her daughter, went on a two-year voyage from our home port in San Carlos, Mexico to Panama, through the Caribbean and back again. We had four kids aboard ages 7, 8, and two 13-year-olds. We also started with me, my husband, and my best friend who met another sailor on the way to Panama and who jumped ship to be with my friend, and they have now been married over 20 years. All EIGHT of us lived on my 47’ Vagabond ketch, but we were one tight and hilarious crew!!
Yes, the kids (and adults) got seasick from time to time, but the experiences they had the rest of the time made up for it. They are adults now, with kids of their own, but hearing them speak of the boat voyage is hilarious. Yes, they remember the seasick moments, and I’ve been accused of both ruining peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for life for them, and I will apparently never live down making hotdog fried rice when our provisions got really low once. They remember how we traded bottles of rum and large cans of olives for green beans (our kids’ favorite canned vegetable which became hard to find in Central America). Their perspective and stories are amazing and often hilarious when they speak of their childhood cruising experiences.
Any “bad mom” feelings I had are now just memories as their experience was far more positive than negative. As I watch these channels devoted to cruising (with children) I actually KNOW what joys (and hardships) will be discussed about the experience by your grown children, and I wanted to let you know you’re not a “bad mom” or parent for giving your kids this amazing experience.👍😀👍
The shots of you getting off the dock were exceptional.
I’m very jealous of your lifestyles. I am born and bred by the sea on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales 🏴 UK 🇬🇧. I used to own a small motor boat and took my family regularly on fishing trips. My son has continued this tradition with his kids. Sadly I am disabled now and unable to cope with the physical demands of the sea any more. I love watching you and your lovely family on your beautiful boat getting into all sorts of adventures and with all the issues the sea can throw at you. I have only recently come across you on UA-cam but suffice to say you have a new fan. May all your travels aboard the Mermaid Monster by enjoyable and above all else safe. Happy Sailing. Rich 😊
Love you guys!! So real. Can’t say I’d stay that calm or just say on a vid “yeah we are going to do an all-nighter on the LI sound” 😱😵💫😵💫😵💫. Amazing sailors. Hope we’ve warmed up by now. Tough weekend with winds and heavy rain, hope you were tucked in 🤞🤞🤞
Great episode! Thank you. The Boston departure was bittersweet, the canal fascinating, and the weather challenges in the sound gave some insight into your challenges. Happy holidays to all of you, as another year comes to a close.
great episode! Stay safe and have fun MM crew! 👍👍
Love the videos, it was great to meet you guys in Georgetown. Love the 55 Nordi. It’s the best!
I find the water shots so calming here at 4 in the morning as always thanks for sharing stay safe see you soon Merry Christmas hope Santa is good to you all
Great video... btw, my wife and I were married at the Aquarium, right next to that marina. Love the city, but yeah, COLD!
That's the Coast Guard Academy's Training Barque, USS Eagle, not Old Ironsides, the USS Constitution.
Oh, forgot, 'hi' from the tip of Cape Cod!
Hiiiiii!!!!!
I remember your video in Provincetown a year or two ago. Make a note next time you are in Cape Cod bay... happy to pick you guys up at a dinghy dock and take you to our local grocery, etc. @@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER
Another great video. Little tip. Please tell your wife to be careful with her fingers when releasing lines from the wharf. Yes, it was calm and no apparent wind but as you know it isn’t always like that. Get into the habit of releasing lines with fingers well clear of pinch points, otherwise one day she’s going to do it the way she did in this video and the boat will pull away in the wind and her fingers/hand will be in a lot of trouble. So make a habit of doing it right and you’ll do it right every time without thinking.
By the way - organic beef refers to what the cattle is fed, as in organic feed or feed that can sometimes contain preservatives or other artificial contents. It’s not about the cattle being organic, just what they are fed.
Another thing is that you should not have the lines lying on the jetty. If you’re in a bad situation you should be able to leave the jetty without leaving the yacht. In worst case you can just throw the lines and retrieve them later. We never leave the yacht while we coming or going from a jetty or quay for safety reason.
You want to know why I like you guys? It’s because you’re normal. You say normal family things. You don’t spruce up for the camera which comes off as “real”. Thank you
That’s what we r going for. We wont ever change that.
I agree totally, you're living the dream of a lot of folks. Young and Older. Keep up the adventure.
Thank you guys. You are great parents.
As a blue-water sailor living on my boat here in the Caribbean, let your son know anyone can get seasick. It is a counterintuitive but we have found having a big meal before heading out to sea really helps. We sailed 1,385 NM in 2023. Currently doing some needed boat projects in St Martin. I enjoy your videos. A friend of ours has a Nordhavn and they are gorgeous boats. We hit 11.1 knots of SOG off Guadaloupe a week ago. We cruise between 4 and 6 knots depending on wind and wave. Lonnie from the s/v Watoosh.
The USS Constitution in the sun WOW!! 👍👍😲😲Wow nice Coast Guard training ship USCGC Eagle footage! 👍👍
Poor Leo! Hopefully he will grow out of it soon! Hang in there Leo! 👍👍👊👊
Even though those waves look huge to me on this side of the monitor, i absolutely love that footage with the dramatic music...
FYI, that was the Eagle the Constitution only leaves the the dock on 4th of July
I love that you just did a “Day in the life” video. Brings me back. ❤️
Constitution = Eagle, love it. Another great vid, balanced boat technical-v-family.
Thanks for that!
Loved this episode. I agree with you Brooke, the camera does not do the Eagle justice. It is a beautiful ship. I was wondering if you had ever visited the ship named USS Constitution aka Old Ironsides, in any of your visits to the Boston area. That is an impressive ship to say the least. Wishing you and the entire family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
True, but that Coast Guard ship was not Old Ironsides, but still looked good.
Enjoyed this video - 🙏
Nice shot of USCGC EAGLE
That's not the Constitution, it is the Coast Guard barque Eagle, the training ship of the CG Academy. She is a steel vessel build in the twentieth century and has an engine.
That sailing ship was USCGC Eagle. Not the USS Constitution
It may be the camera, but the air mixture on your stove burners looks to set incorrectly. Flame should be mostly blue. Needs more air. There should be an adjustment underneath the stove or on each burner someplace. Great vid. I enjoy the channel.
It’s probably because there is a draft blowing in!!
@@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER That would cause that, too.
Dang, Brooke looks good. She is not aging.
Why thanks
I love Captain! ❤❤❤
I use to be a snow bird. Enjoy the warm weather. I pray 🙏 you have a Merry Christmas 🎄. I sure you know a northern is headed your way. 🦜
Doggy Potty.... We have 4 Yorkie size dogs, and a teak deck. So we are having a special sealed tray made with AstroTurf inside and a drain so it can be flushed out through a drain hose. That worked at a pet friendly BNB.
Hopefully, that will work for us. Just a different solution to a common issue. 😁
fast boat for a second?? 11 knots.. go MM go!! 👍👍🤣🤣😂😂
My Dad was very strict for us to always wrap the lines and hang. I see so many with their lines laying on the deck and just waiting for someone to trip.
Good point!!
I love the music and the ending!! Driving suspense!! 😁😁😁😁
Great video and even the mundane things are interesting if you don't do them $100 million thousand times. So what may seem mundane to you guys to us viewers is interesting!
Great cinematography. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much! I am glad you have been enjoying them
Great freaking boat. 👍🏻👍🏻
Tips for CURING seasickness - Eat Ginger Biscuits, go to aft of the boat, STAND with back against the rear wall/door. Stare at the horizon....Should only take 15 minutes to get rid of the dizziness. For children in particularly "Sickness wrist bands" (slight pressure) should keep it at bay.
13:05 Normally you don't want orange flames for propane as that has a possibility to generate carbon monoxide. Some of the symptoms for carbon monoxide poisonings can be masked by sea sickness. Although depending on the humidity of the air coming in from that porthole, that could also be causing the orange flames. I personally would make sure there is a working carbon monoxide detector in the galley and double check the pressure of the propane with a water column gauge.
It’s all good.
I have taken the dock lines to a laundromat and washed them. Good as new
nice shot of the Eagle!
I was standing on the dinghy dock with a liveaboarder and his dog. Their 36’ steel ketch was anchored out near the marina. I watched the dog backup to the edge of the dock and drop a few off in the water. I was impressed and asked the guy how long it took to train the dog to do that and he replied: “I didn’t know he could do that! We figured he was swimming ashore.”
🙌🙌
It must be a leo thing I swear by kwells .and your both given your kids a great life experience
You have 4 cute little monsters, great little kids. Have fun in the city, if you get a chance the night lights are turn on st the Bronx zoo as well
I love the ending Music for mooring.
He is a Beautiful Airedale
Thanks!
Thank you
Must have been a turn around cruise for the Constitution to make sure it weathers evenly?? 👍👍
isn’t that the eagle as it is the coast guard. The constitution is navy but it is great no matter which. I have been a captain since the 80s and have gone out in bad weather to rescue our charter boats when the weather got rougher than they were comfortable with. I was all sail and love a sailboat in heavy weather but a Nordhavn or a Bering would be my choice for a trawler
It could very well be!
Yes. it was the Eagle USCG
👍
I wish i had known you guys were in town i would have loved to meet up and say hi
Try putting brown paper bag etc. between his skin and belt line , outer clothes ?
His, subconcious, may focus on that instead of the sea. It helped on western lake Superior.
God bless
From the crew of Dodge Buoy
Thanks Guys
We like your videos, diy videos, seafaring videos and travel exploration videos. You both have a mellow relaxing approach to life. Are you retired or still work?. Could you share just a broad overview of what you do to make this all happen. I’m about to retire and am just curious how different UA-camrs live their different dreams. Thanks. Love we you videos.
We are not retired we both work to make it all work:)
Hi I work in port wash close by but i live on the south shore. great pizza @ginos on main st. block from the train station enjoy NYC
After watching your videos and Dirona, if I ever buy a trawler it is going to be Nordhavn. If possible a N63.
Get him Brooke 😅
After all the stormy weather are you still happy with Nordhavn vs a Fleming? Also have you witnessed a lot of windage movement due to her height.
Lastly are you OK with the slow top speed and have there been any instances where you needed more speed for safety? Appreciate your videos, we're deciding on brand now.
Take half a day, and read "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. A scary look into the world of American meat production.
Dog’s go to the bathroom on the Poop-Deck! Everyone knows this…..right?
Hahaha
Kind of a dumb question, does your boat have enough power to stay at speed in strong currents, wind or big waves? I know slow and steady is great for fuel economy but I wondered about torque.
Brooke is a babe mom
Did someone just flip the bird at 3:11? LMAO
A lot of humans have supernumerary nipples, me included. Like all mammals, like dogs for example, we have a nipple line. In women, these extra nipple are more evident and after pregnancy, the areola will darken from pink to brown.
Great video!!! Life at sea is Life at sea… the sailing ship was clearly a Coast Guard vessel… not the USS Constitution… old Ironsides spends most of year at the dock, in the Charleston Navy Shipyard. (except for a once a year Turnaround to keep the masts and rigging from taking a “set” from the prevailing winds)
There were more than one ship we showed you guys!
One was underway and one was at anchor
Pretty sure that was another sail vessel. The USS Constitution does not leave the dock… except for the official turnaround on July 4th each year. It is usually a tug assisted operation, with a flotilla of press coverage boats and news helicopters.. but at least once recently they actually sailed…. Never heard of them anchoring in the past 50 years..
Would you two mind telling us what it is that you do for income other then the little bit UA-cam gives you . I think the Mr. Mermaid lol does something to do with recording music or selling peoples music I dont know. Please do explain . Oh I am sure you both are fantastic parents . I am old enough to be your father for sure and yet I still hate thinking how few times my Dad ever spoke and to me and my Mother should have been in a prison for the insane no joke . So watching a wonderful family is very wonderful for me
No way I would do that with kids different strokes for different folks I guess
Just hose it overboard 😊
Does your boat use a lot of fuel, what's the cost.
Burn is 5 gallons an hr so no, not alot of fuel.
I'd go out in that weather in a 10ft dinghy
Trimmed moustache, looks good! 🇨🇦
There is s terrible storm heading your way. Going out in the boat is crazy. Stay a couple day at the marina.
when does a boat fender not float ... how do you lose one????
They float but they float away… haha. We didn’t have time to try and go catch it
Why are your stove burners burning yellow, too much fuel and not enough air or pressure problem?
Air blowing in from the open hatch in the galley
are the flames blue most of the time? @@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER
If it's fed GMO feed or it's been GMO then it's not organic so far as that rating goes.
Rats! You never see rats on modern sailing channels nor those "rat cones" on ropes. Do you ever get rats on the boat?
Life's looking a little boring.......Maybe time to try mini vans and soccer practices?.......Going to the mall........Working on the yard?
Not even sure what this means.
Means you all seem tired, bored, whatever.......not a criticism, just an observation@@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER
Eating non-organic meat causes you to grow a third nipple.......ohhh the humor of adult conversations. You two are a very cute couple.
Hahahaha
You feel like being in a sailboat heeling over? LOL In a Nordhavn Trawler? You guys are too soft for weather and choppy seas. You may be much hapier doing the Great Loop or lake sailing...
Yadda yadda. Have you been on a boat before?
@@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER Yes, Time or two. Mostly on the West Coast . On my own 49 ft. DeFever Pilot House -Portuguese Bridge Trawler without any stabilizers. Why do you ask? Did my comment sound like it was written by someone without any boating experience?
@@aytacercen944 you called this seafaring family who are a beacon of adventure to many people“soft”. If you don’t know that makes you sound like a condescending tool maybe you should limit your unsupervised internet time huh?
show more of what you are doing you can still talk we don't need to see your face to hear you
I thought I'd give you a try after unsubscribing months ago, but it appears you're still crying wolf. I'll try again in a couple of months.
It appears that you have nothing nice to say comment after comment… that doesn’t get you far in life… just saying. Have a good day ❤️
When you talk please don't point the camera at your face it's not about you. Also I like shots of family all cozy and warm in bed so more interior shots of the boat in cozy situations. But pointing the camera at your face when talking. Total turn off. I'm 59 never ever have taken a selfie not even once
Hahahahah okkkkk. 🙄🤦♀️
Are there any times that you may elect to travel on just one engine af any one time to save fuel ?
Nope
What is your purpose in life?
Is this an actual question lol?
@@ABOARDMERMAIDMONSTER yes, please don’t take this the wrong way! I’m just wondering how the kids will evolve into a normal life one day? When they get the chance.
@jmarty72 👍 well our purpose is to raise kids to actually not live a “normal” life ☺️❤️ we want to give them a bigger perspective on the all the different ways to live life!
I’m not sure of your tone. I’ll unsubscribe
