    Hiii Amyyyyyy, OMGGGGG you have uploaded this video on the right time! Ive watched most of the videos you mentioned in the starting just because i saw 'effortlessly', i remember when my grades were falling and everyone i used to watch these kinds of videos because i didn't want to work and was looking for a shortcut. And how you said in the video that 'we all know deep down what we need to do to get straight A's' which is so true because most of the time people avoid doing those things wondering if they'd fit in or not. My friend got bullied because she always used to get A's no matter what and its actually really sad because many kids stop studying thinking it would make them look cool. I relate so much to the first story, back in 7th grade we started doing physics and i knew nothing about it at the beginning we had a really good teacher but after a few months he left, and when the new teacher came i wouldn't understand anything from her and i think one of the main reasons for that was also my carelessness because my classmates used to say 'we will never understand anything she's saying' i started saying it too and ultimately i actually ended up not understanding a single thing while the kids who still studied despite the fact everyone said she wasn't a good teacher got really marks( i love how you focus so much on the mindset!)Also one thing I would like to say is that many students also lack behind when other people say they wont be able to do something (just my observation).
    And its actually a really good advice to ask what you did wrong on your test, i usually do that like most of the time but this time i when i got low marks in urdu which i never have, i went to my teacher to ask her what i did wrong, but because she was mad at me (she thought that i was blaming her for cutting my marks) she didn't tell me so when i went home i went through every single word i wrote on the test and made a sperate sheet for all the mistakes i made so I don't make them in my finals.
    Amyyy, despite the fact you had those migraines and you still worked hard reminds me the quote 'if you want something you'll work towards it no matter what'. You truly deserved to go to Caltech and get all those amazing results you got for the work and effort youve put in.
    Amyyy you are such an inspiration for meeee! I love your videos so much and how hard working you are!

      i’ve never had to put much effort to get straight A’s but i’m studying now. in my school, a 4.8 GPA would NOT be valedictorian 😭😭 we’ve had kids take so many JC classes they get above a 5.0 (JC classes give more units per gpa point per semester than regular classes, so it’s possible to get more than a 5.0)

      Ohh yess so true! My mistake was thinking the straight A students were doing some convoluted routine but they probably used what they had and just most of the time did practise questions etc to get where they are. Doing the small things (which may feel strange or not helpful in the short term) but which eventually add up to amazing things in the end

    Advice for any gifted kids:
    I myself am a gifted kid. we don't get taught how to study as we manage to pass early tests without a struggle, but then when we begin to get B's and C's in more important later tests, it can burn you out really quick. If you are still currently getting A's and B's with ease, I'd recommend moving onto the hard stuff yourself at home, so its easier for you when it comes to exam time and you put in loads of work already.
    E.g I found maths very easy in year 7-9 (grade 6-8) I was still interested in doing harder stuff so I did it at home. It makes life way easier for me now because I already know lots of things we are studying in class (like pythagorous). If your gifted, don't let school bring you down. Use what you have :)

      I feel the term's thrown around too much since being gifted doesn't mean just scoring all A's with minimum effort but the ability to grasp and remember concepts easier than the rest.
      Gifted also doesn't mean being able to understand higher classes's books. Early tests are easy to pass for everyone but your true test comes when you move on to higher grades such as 9-12th. In India, the concept change drastically in these years.
      If you're unable to get A's or B+'s in these grades, I'd say you were never gifted at all.

    • @teddyscloset9399
      @teddyscloset9399 9 місяців тому

      Yes, i agree by this, but what I mentioned is definitely part of what it is to be a gifted kid@@almogxchq5282

      @@almogxchq5282 I think the "If you're unable to get A's or B's in these grades If I'd say you were never gifted at all" doesn't consider other factors. I think there's nuance to this. For example, "Gifted" isn't necessarily ONLY a description of people and their talent alone. "Gifted" in America is also a reference to a course where students were given more academically challenging material, which was usually from grades higher than their own. For example, I was in the gifted program in the 6th grade and was given 9th grade coursework. Plus, each country (even each school district, providence, state, city, country, etc) has different levels of difficulties, which depends on what classes students take (AP, Honors, IB, etc.), or whatever the government can tell schools to teach, you know?
      I think a lot of it is a lack of understanding of how to study and which methods are effective.

    I think that when people have more activities such as sports, clubs and societies going on in their lives many of them tend to do better because that person realises the value of time (they may or may not be conscious about it). Since activities like soccer practice and tuition take place at a fixed time on a fixed day the person gets into a routine and mentally starts planning their day so they know when to study. I am mostly speaking from personal experience, I have seen the switch in my grades drastically ever since I stopped doing all my activities "to study". I think since we have "time" we tend to push studying back but when you have activities going on you know that you have to complete a task within a time frame. I know this to everyone since everyone has their own preferences. Plus, doing sports does help with many cognitive functions, you get the exercise which does help in improving studies.

    • @wamyy5
      @wamyy5  9 місяців тому +101

      YES I love that and totally agree! My experience doing math competitions and sports in high school makes me value time more. When we have set activities, we know to use time more efficiently and those sessions are definitely productive for us. Really appreciate you emphasizing the importance of physical activity - it's ironic people think the best students just study but I'd say the best ones do sports too!

    I think the 3rd story really motivated me too keep going because PHYSICS is one of the WORST subject for me..
    I've been trying to study that subject consistently for over a month but self doubts always made it so hard..
    After hearing what you achieve even while having some disadvantages motivated me to keep going.
    Your video also concluded that "it's not hard for me because I'm less smarter, but because I'm putting less efforts"
    THANKYOU!❤

    I'm not even a student anymore but I enjoyed this video so much! I'm also extremely grateful for the way you described migraines as a disability or a disorder. Too often I convince myself that "everybody gets headaches from time to time" or that "if I don't do anything while I have a migraine I'll never get anything done". I need to remember that this is a handicap - and while it's no excuse to sit down and do nothing with life, it's certainly not something to be brushed off as "I just gotta deal with it".

      Yes omg I didn't even realize that even medically, migraines are defined as a neurological disorder! I should've known because they're truly so debilitating, so yes, while we should stay tough, sometimes we should know that things are serious and we should take them seriously. I hope you find ways to manage your migraines. We got this!

This year my grades had clearly gone down, and the truth is this year I had procrastinated a lot, and I didn't feel motivated at all, and I said that I shouldn't make an effort and accept the grade they gave me, but this helped inspire me to improve the year what's coming! I'm going to review your channel more, to put all your tips into practice, I hope to return at the end of the year with an average that I can be proud of, I can only say thank you Amy! no more excuses the next year!

    IM SO GLAD I STUMBLED UPON YOUR VIDEO. first of all i love the way you provide realistic insights and not just generic tips. but what stood out to me the most is when you talked about migraines. ive been suffering from migraines since as long as i can remember and it has been always a plan ruiner for me. at some point, it had even become an excuse to get out of doing things that i didnt want to do. only one thought played in my mind " they will always have it easier, so a bad grade on my part isnt actually bad and im okay with it" even if i wasnt actually okay with it. watching you really inspired me since ive never seen any study influencers talk about these kind of chronic problems and how to face them. thank u so much fr.

      Hi thanks for contributing your tip! What major were you? Just curious because while I strongly recommend looking at past year’s questions, for physics like I described in the video, what’s most important is the problem-solving skills that you can only build by truly understanding the concepts!

    • @wamyy5
      @wamyy5  9 місяців тому +10

      For work I think it depends on your job - in consulting, we always find it quite helpful to look at past decks! 😅 I do agree that the real world is about working with ambiguity and not with straightforward test questions to study.

    • @eudaimonian9473
      @eudaimonian9473 9 місяців тому +5

      I was a stats/CS major at Columbia which tbh had pretty terrible teaching. Of course you should try to grok the material as deeply as possible on a conceptual level but unless you’re doing something proof-based like measure theory or topology you can ace exams just by getting a “feel” for the computational steps and strategies used to solve similar questions. Once you have that down then it’s a matter of pattern-matching. I’ve found that this works for courses like multi variable calc and linear algebra. I got As in these but didn’t really understanding the underlying intuition until much later, eg I didn’t realize that an eigenvector was supposed to be the invariant basis vector after a linear transformation, but I knew how to compute one to ace the exam lol.

    • @eudaimonian9473
      @eudaimonian9473 9 місяців тому +2

      A lot of lower to mid level courses in STEM just boil down to learning a “playbook” of strategies to solve specific classes of problems. If you can identify that a problem can be solved with some kind of optimization then you should immediately think of a Lagrangian and so on (depending on the syllabus). This applies to tech interviews at Google/Meta/Amazon with leetcode-style questions as well. This strategy only fails once you get to courses where only intuition is tested rather than application, but these tend to be rare at the undergrad level. Even for real analysis you can get away with memorizing a bunch of common proofs - once you have the structure of a Cauchy convergence proof internalized all the others kinda follow the same “template”.

    Such an amazing and inspirational video this is. I appeared for Cambridge exams for the first time last year only for three subjects. I did not rely on teachers at all, took extra time to make my own notes, do my own study and dint even care about class tests. My friends would sometimes call me insane for wasting so much time and going opposite of how the teachers instructed us to do the paper. I used to take help from past papers and they used to say that it does not have everything right in it so you need to listen to the teacher more, but I was like no. I never did what my teacher taught me, instead I did my own, my own resources, my own understanding etc. AND guess WHAT.. lately, we got our result and I go 2A* and 1A in those three subjects, and those people who relied on school and restricted themselves to only what the teacher taught and dint use their brains, they were either below me or dint even achieve a single A, and all my friends, they are also behind me and my name is at the top of the school result flex, pasted outside the wall of our school.

      @@fatimawaqarmcPeace be upon you. Congratulations and well done! There are some relatable points you make. Many times, a bright student who has done their own research of how to be successful according to exam point of view, knows a lot more than the teacher themselves, I totally agree because it's so relatable.
      And thank you for highlighting the significance of past paper practice. Do see my pinned comment on Amy's latest reaction vlog 'the Asian Secret to learn anything.. '. In that comment I've highlighted my own experience of past papers practice for Cambridge exams, and how it's actually lots of past papers practice and their revision in the right direction that leads to success in exams. Do read that comment and let me know if you find it relatable and helpful.
      And welcome to Amy's community, you'll find it so helpful! There are humble people here who are willing to help one another, just like Amy! Amy is really erudite and humble & caring at the same time, and you'll find her vlogs really really helpful for US college admissions and studies.

      @@HumanHuman. Thank so much for such a nice comment, Cambridge is indeed all past paper practice, coz they give you a demo of what the exam is gonna be like. But the exams I'm gonna appear on next year are all rew pattern and I so just practice on random questions. Yea its right that sometimes you can figure out more than the teachers themselves, and even my teachers praise me for working so hard for the exams and they now use my notes as well. And as for that comment, I really find it relatable coz the examiner isn't going to see what you did in school but will only see that you meet the requirements of the standard form. It is indeed a form of smart learning to do past paper questions and throughout my last year, I practiced from past papers, learning about their format, I wasn't so very good at the beginning of the year but eventually over time I got better. I found out so many things from it, things which were not mentioned in book or anything else, and also a go through of common questions or weird questions which are not at all mentioned in the book. It felt like I had mastered the past papers and the exam pattern and how to actually answer the questions. Though I wasn't very regular or consistent due to procrastination and doubt wether I was doing the right thing coz it was my first time, I still managed to do all of it and I just needed to skim through on the last day coz I knew how I was gonna write my answers, The key is that you know how to answer and that way you ace your exams. I used to correct my wrong answers in tests and exams which helped me remember it for the rest of the year. I had only just started to learn about different strategies of learning so I want familiar with many but now I'm going to appear for my main subjects next year and one thing I've learnt and I'm gonna stick to is that self study and exam style questions from past papers are the key to easy A*, like everytime i hear about a topper, they say that they had studied 24/7 till exams but i think they did not study smart but too hard. I literally has so much free time and still managed to get the grades. Lastly, thankyou so much for such a warm welcome to this community and i would absolutely love to be a part of it. May God bless you too!

    05:23 is so true, especially for IB students. We tend to spend a big chunk of our time doing our Internal Assessment which is only 20% since our teachers emphasise more about it. It happens. Have faith.
      Take this temporary setback as a motivation to do better & better. Think of it this way: if this temporary setback didn't come, you might've become satisfied with your current study methods and thought of them to be perfect even if they weren't. So make this an opportunity to see how you can excel way more in grades than you've imagined previously. There is no end to growth.
      And don't let anyone tell you that it's just a B and it's not a big deal. It is a big deal when you're aiming very high. As long as you are learning from your mistakes, then it's okay. It's way better to improve upon a single mistake right when you make it, rather than let it grow. If you become complacent and think it's just a B, then it might turn into a C. That's why take every single mistake you make on tests/exams seriously if you want to score the highest.
      But it's better in advance to develop an excellent approach to studying that'll avoid many mistakes in the first place. Amy's vlogs like these ones are helpful for defining that kind of approach.
      Wishing you all the best. You got this!

I had been watching a lot of other videos where they state the steps, but none of them were/ felt as real as yours. Your honesty and transparency made it easy for us to understand the point you're trying to make, and able to connect to it on a more spiritual level. Thank you SO much, Amy, you're a life saver! For anyone just entering university and is struggling, don’t worry because i was once there. I couldn’t get Dean’s list or high achiever award for the first two semesters of my foundation in science. But as sem 3 came along, i had a different mindset that i know i can do it. And this video translates exactly the efforts i was willing to put in. I don’t just copy other people’s assignments, i made assignments as a priority and started doing it early, and i used those assignments as mediums to enhance my understandings about a topic. Whenever my friends asked me to hangout, I’d say, “Nah I’ll pass, i wanna get my 4.0” And lore and behold, i got 4.0 GPA :D Am about to enter my medical degree so i will try my best to maintain this mindset throughout. I also highly recommend pre-lecture studying as it’ll give you a better base understanding before entering a lecture. So yes, always believe in yourself and never take no for an answer :) Thank you for the awesome video !!

    Without resorting to cheating, ofc. There was a certain AP class at my high school that people pretty much only got A's if they cheated and knew the quiz answers beforehand (which was a lot of people). If you didn't cheat then you were out of luck. (I did not take this class lol)

    Hi Amyyy, I know you uploaded this video three months ago. Still, tomorrow I'm starting high school again after Christmas break, and as I was terrified to lose my straight A's, I needed to get motivated. Anyhow, I've been having migraines since last year and I didn't even know how to describe the 'aura' cause no one could understand or diagnose what was going on with me, I felt like I was the only person with this issue. So listening to you say these things about it in the video made me realize I'm not the only person who has issues in the way, tysm 💕
    plus, it's so funny how I can relate to almost everything, like, I always look at my hand and literally can't count my fingers, and somehow, I always get these migraines in physics classes, it's so awful.

My classes end at 4:30 in the evening and i reach my home at 7(I take piblic transport). Im literally very much exhausted but i need to finish the given work. Anddd i sleep at 9:30 (it's been a habit since childhood). I recently got straight A's in all the subjects I take and all of my classmates have been asking me how i do this. Guess I learnt time management through this.

I stayed a home so much that it was hard for me to keep up with my good grades and my grades dropped until I pushed myself on the days I stayed home I would do all my homework and try to catch up.
