This performance shows why Cosmic Messenger is my favorite Jean Luc Ponty album, not only is it his hardest rocking album, it also plays a lot like an ensemble group, with the rhythm section almost taking center stage (even though it´s not the original on the album) and his violin merely playing an accompanying part (not that I dislike his playing it´s just that it is not center stage). Awesome video, thanks for sharing it!
Jean Luc Ponty Live -1979 was one ov my early records I bought. Consumed (almost transparent) during the yesrs. One of my favourite bands ever. Thank for sharing this video.
So many people say that EM is their favorite Ponty album. It is, without a doubt, stunning and amazing. Favorite for me? Hmmm... so hard to choose, lemme get back to you on that. I LOVE this performance!
Oooooooooh my GOD!!!! Thank you for sharing this. I needed to SEE and HEAR this. I'm an electric violinist. The reason why I chose to leave classical for rock/fusion/improvisational playing is because of Jean Luc. Thank you, thank you!
I saw JLP in 2018 and Rayford was playing drums that night, too. I much prefer the way they mixed his percussion in for this video (circa 1980). The way his drums were mixed in last year simply overwhelmed every other musician on The Cabot stage that night. I'm glad that I watched/heard this video -- it reminds me that Rayford can be a great band member as well as a soloist.
I`ve seen another rendition of this video much poor. This is a recording of a show in São Paulo in 1980, absolutely unforgetable for those who were privileged to be there like me. After this one, I went to more 3-4 presentations in SP. JLP genius.
I saw him in Pittsburgh too, I think in 1978 at the Stanley Theatre. Didn't he also play at the Soldiers and Sailors museum in Oakland,in Pittsburgh , ?
@@michael_caz_nyc I kid you not, reading that someone else out there groks the huge difference between the two versions actually gave me chill bumps. I gotta’ go listen to the original now.
@@Zerpersande Let me clarify: Randy Jackson is a fantastic bass player. (all the musicians that played with Jean Luc Ponty were incredible) - However . . . guys like: Allan Holdsworth, Ralphe Armstrong and Rayford Griffin were beyond Phenomenal. oNe LovE from NYC
Rayford played "Samba" in his solo....And he did it with a Brazilian Soul.amazing...The guy must have lost some pounds during the show...As someonen said..He is in his enviroment.
What a great stuff! I still love the album "cosmic messanger", it's Ponty's masterpiece on his peak. And -of course- with an awfull band suppliing him. This he learned from Zappa :-)
And vice versa. Ralph Armstrong is technically far more precise in the studio. Jackson appears to be having a lot more fun as one would hope in live performance.
Masterfully done: the other end of the spectrum of brilliant JAZZ strings, Like Pat Metheny, This is a grand wizard of the strings!

Too much power, passion and joy.....I cried watching this.
Young Rayford Griffin in his natural element! the guy is a incredible fusion drummer!
An incredible drummer period but in this environment he shined!
Fusion makes every musician shine. That's why I always loved it. No fakers need apply.
Yeah Ray Griffin rules
I am no drummer but is none better? Tell Me .
He ranks up there with Christian Eigner

I Was in this concert in São Paulo...Wanderley....
Eu tambem!! No Palácio das Convenções no Anhembi!!!
Ponty still rules in my book..
Manso temazo,a pesar de que han pasado muchos años desde su creacion sigue fresco y potente
Terrific solo by Randy Jackson and I love the way keyboardist is enjoying the music!

Raw intensity. Man, I forgot how hard Ponty and his band rocked out live.

I was there. Great night.
4:06. And he does a great job doing on the cymbal bell part like on the record in the final playout.
Excellent bass player! masterful, Randy Jackson
I liked Ralphe Armstrong's solo on the studio album much better.
He's done better this one is kinda shity

This piece makes me SO happy that I play electric violin! I will conquer this before I die!
Definitely shows that a mostly jazz band can flat out rock when they want to...love this track.
Awesome. One of my favourite JLP tracks from my favourite JLP album.
Wonderful that drummer is sick all brazilian drummers sweat with that man!
Genialidad pura sobre el escenario
Jean Luc Ponty Group ( GENIALES , MUY MUY BUENOSS )

Randy Jackson is no joke!!!
Yeah, but his bass solo here doesn’t come even remotely close to what Ralphe Armstrong did on the studio version.
@@Zerpersande No argument from me! Ralphie is one of the most phenomenal bassist on the planet on both electric and upright bass!!!

That Randy Jackson is so much better than all the other Jackson's of music- Reminded me its time to listen to Jaco
Anthony Jackson? 😁
Randy Jackson is a beast on the bass, shame his most well known for being a judge on a talent show.
It's kind of his fault, what was he doing there.....easy money, easy money !!!..........
O contrabaixista é fenômeno . Músicos espetaculares .
Amazing. Unequaled!
Crazy,Crazy musicians

I've seen Ponty 8 times; Rayford's my fave drummer of his. Although Walden was astounding with Mahavishnu!

I saw Ralph Armstrong do this song in person and he killed it. Randy Jackson is not even keeping with the music flow.
@@stevegrimm7065 That’s Jazz - “The Glorification of Imprecision”.
True, but this was still one heck of a fun solo~!
Looks like Ritchie Blackmore on the guitar.
What year was this?
1981.
What happen to the guitar solo ?? impossible to hear it !- Catastofe
Agree, it's a great loss, sound engineer 😠..
Where's Ralph Armstrong ! .......Randy Jackson ? WTF !
This is so Gran Turismo
Jean-Luc ponty initials jlp change it to jam and capitalize it
Excellent
It was disappointing that they didn't show the lead guitar playing, I shut it down after that 1.23
Yah, sure, Randy Jackson pulls it off OK. But Jaco or Percy would blow him away.
Soo what's your point again?
+JamesClark ISR.. Ralphe Armstrong solo in EgoMol form JLP live album is the better
+twostikks1 Dude can barely play!! Maybe you should give him a lesson!
Summondadrummin Lmao this clown can't teach Randy shit.

sound has little to do with video
horrible video synchronization but whatever
That bass solo is nothing like the original. Very disappointed.
Is not the same bass player, the other one is a Armstrong, different styles

Yeah, that’s Randy Jackson. Good bassist but not as good as Ralphe Armstrong.
unbelievably bad recording , he guitar solo is almost inaudible 1 ..
