In those early days, Scott Henderson was a full blown LA rockstar! He's still a jaw droppingly, tasty player, but back in those days he was definitely still hungry and out to kick everybody's ass! And DID! I wanted so badly to be a part of that chop monster clique, but things didn't turn out that way. 😭 (I'm Swinger Kelley and I approve this message).
I watched this same show here in Porto Alegre, Brazil and you're right, it was insane. The first time I met Sonny Emory, I follow him on social media. By the way: I still have this same show in VHS format with other songs (for example: Mirage and New Country), some day, I'll convert it to digital format.
+1 Scott H is the man, and this was also the era when Tribal Tech pretty much DESTROYED just about every live act I saw from 84-90, that was a great era for fusion. TT was that good.
Yes!! TT is the best fusion band until now, along with Allan Holdsworth. And I don't have any hope that there will be anything like them. In jazz fusion genre.
I absolutely love Scott Henderson's playing, but especially the early years from right before he graduated GIT to the first few after. The solo in this is killer! He was not actually a big fan of his work with Jean Luc Ponty, but I like it.
+kuhchicken I love Scott Henderson, but his own opinion of his playing seems to be almost opposite of mine. I WAY prefer his earlier style. These days, you wouldn't even know it was the same player. Tone, technique, phrasing, etc. He's still amazing, but not in a way that inspires me.
Saw them on this tour. I was hoping it would be Steurmer on guitar, but when the band comes out it's this goober with a goofy haircut and an aloha shirt. I'm thinking "Awww... who is this guy....?" By the end of the night, I'm like "WOW - who WAS that guy?!?!" Led me to Tribal Tech, and I've been a fan ever since.
Love, Love LOVE THIS TUNE. ITS GOOD TO USE WHILE CLEANING HOUSE-GET A LOT DONE FAST!!! LOVE YOU JEAN AND STELLAR MUSCIANS. THIS NEEDS TO BE REMASTERED OR SOMETHING LOVE TO ALL💞🌹💃🤍☮️☯️💖Cooking Whos that on guitar? Need to know
That's Sonny Emory. I went through two years of the Jazz Guitar program at Georgia State University while he was there. Made me want to quit or improve every time I played with him in jazz lab. He went on to great things....
I just know that this bassist John Humphrey, who later played with Scott Henderson blues trío for some years and records, joined Jean Luc Ponty tour after Gary Willis left the band to play with Wayne Shorter.
I am happy now by this art of music. Thank you JLP and his band!
The full release of this gig would be tremendous
Scott Henderson exceptional guitarist and superb when accompanying with JLP !
man i love jlp with all my heart, i wouldn't be the man i am today without him 🙏

I agree, his style and phrasing has changed, and I too miss the fire he had in those days.
Agreed
Scott the best!

on keyboards?....Walter Afanasieff?........john humphreys on bass?
John Humphrey yes
Is that a Floyd rose equipped strat Scott is playing here, dive bombs and all? That's pretty neat and kind of unexpected.
headstock looks charvel-ish...kramer was popular then as well...beretta had the "hockey stick" headstock)
Scott Henderson played with the Chick Corea Elektric Band at this time also....That's not Rayford Griffin on Drums, anybody know what that is?
Seems to be Sonny Emory.......
is that Omar Hakim on drums?...is there any more footage of this lineup?...i saw them at Berklee Performance Center...was a great surprise!

I thought I had never seen Henderson - but I saw a JLP tour in Denver at this time. How long did Henderson tour with JLP?
I just know that this bassist John Humphrey, who later played with Scott Henderson blues trío for some years and records, joined Jean Luc Ponty tour after Gary Willis left the band to play with Wayne Shorter.
...aaaand as always a miserable fucking 2 seconds of camera for the amazing bass player.
