I’m excited for Robin’s reaction to Luffy being Joyboy. Out of everyone in the crew, she knows the most about Joyboy through the poneglyphs. So it will be interesting to see what she thinks

I keep getting so impressed with Nami during this raid, the fact that she actually stood up to Kaido is kind of insane even if she obviously couldn't do anything to him.
Nami constantly rises to the occasion. I made a joke once that to survive in the one piece world, you need to be somewhere between not getting knocked out by Nami, or solo’d by Luffy

On the note about Luffy becoming the "chosen one", I think we can take a lesson from a classic piece of cinema, Ratatouille.
Not everyone can be the chosen one, but the chosen one can come from anywhere. Luffy is still the same kid we met in chapter 1, but more than just fate has brought him to this point.
Fate is what happens at the cross section of preparation and opportunity. Luffy has prepared for 1000+ chapters, but only now are we seeing him step into a role that only he can fill.

The way I interpreted Zunesha calling Luffy "JoyBoy" isn't that he's some kind of reincarnation. Rather, I think JoyBoy simply was a person that also ate the Gomu Gomu No Mi, and when he learned how to awaken its powers, he was able to do something so impactful that the Marines had to erase a whole century from history. So now and only now that Luffy has awakened his devil fruit powers, he has become JoyBoy, because he has the same power and the same potential he had.
It makes no sense for me that, since the marines knows about Luffy power from way back then, and if it really was as significand they would have tried to kill him with a lot more determination, even more so to prevent an awakening. So i dont think so, or if it is, i dont like that plot hole.

I don't mind Luffy being the chosen one because the way Oda did it is actually quite amazing.
In most western stories, it begging with the old master telling the hero "you're the chosen one, come with me", and that's that.
With Luffy, nobody told him what to do or where to go, he was the little guy from East Blue no one would have bet on. He forged his own path and became who he is through his own choices and actions.
To me, Luffy wasn't born to be the chosen one, but he became the one everybody WANT to choose.
You know like the sage of six paths suddenly proclaiming Naruto and Sasuke are chosen without anyone else telling them that or guiding them and their own choices lead then to the final battle.
Again not everything about the choose one plot will be revealed until like two more years of chapters so who knows how it'll turn out.
This.. He became the chosen one through force of will and personality. Every time he was saved was because he endeared himself to someone stronger and more capable.
Yeah, I feel like Luffy being a chosen one is largely irrelevant when we break it down to who Luffy is as a person. Because it's the same sort of thing we've seen throughout the series: characters proclaiming Luffy as a savior or liberator or hero. But Luffy himself has never cared about these titles, and just does what he wants to do. This is just that, but at a much grander scale.
Both oda and kishi did it well if oda is going there but I’m still tired of the destiny trope.

I think when Marco said to not lose your composure, not until it's all over was Oda speaking directly to the reader. I also don't know how to feel about Joyboy potentially taking over Luffy to finish Kaido or being Joyboy. Unless this is a nightmare Luffy esq play to bring out an awakened gear 5th. Joy MAN.

My prediction for the next chapter is a backstory of Joyboy, maybe not what he is known for but him growing up. Oda like you said has a habit of leaving cliffhangers run for a few chapters so that's one way of letting sit on the cliffhanger.

I always thought "joyboy" was more of a title kind of like "pirate king" that you are able to become. I don't think Luffy becoming joyboy necessarily means that he will be a different person or possessed but that zunesha was identifying the "voice" of liberation coming from Luffy like a specific trait. I'll be waiting with bated breath to see if I'm wrong

we already know joyboy is actual character that existed so they very clearly aren't just talking about a title here. "pirate king" is a title made up by gold roger.
Kinda ironic how a big theme of the Beast Pirates is "primal", with most of them being dinosaurs, and now Luffy potentially awakens the "primal" aspect of this rubber ability, oil or resin.
I just wonder if he will also aquire the properties of both rubber and gum?
If so, I like to be reminded of that property with every attack he uses XD

I feel Luffy will kinda refuse the Joyboy aspect if possible. Remember, he's in it for his own freedom (and freedom of those he likes), not for realizing some grand plan. He will probably unwittingly achieve the same goal Joyboy had, but at the same time he'll prolly go sth like 'Screw the Joyboy crap, my name is Luffy, now get me some meat'. Not immediately but likely during/after the rematch with Kaido

@@mrsplashman8308 sort of - a major factor in how it plays out might be whether the dragon fruits in fact hold the will/personality aspects of previous users, as some theorize. In that case Luffy could, for example, go through an explicit inner conflict with the Joyboy aspect that laid dormant and refuse to act on JB's desires - eg taking part in some conflict or performing a task.
There's also just the Joyboy's history that we don't know - with Oda's storytelling heavily showing younger generations trying to carve their own way instead of following in the footsteps of authority figures, wouldn't surprise me if JB wanted to bring freedom to masses in a way that would seem unacceptable to Luffy. Parallel to Koby/Smoker despising how ruthless Navy can be (and maybe, I'd say quite likely, Dragon having a similar parallel with Xebec), he'd go for the same/similar goal (Justice in case of Navy, freedom for Luffy, toppling tyrants for Dragon), but disregarding the methods of the one who came before him.
So my only concern (maybe) with the joy boy twist is that there is very possibly a character with time travel abilities, who may or may not in the general area .
What if everyone was wrong and the next arc is the Void Century Arc?

Didn't take more than a couple hours for "the itch" to hit... Oda wrote it way TOO good this time. Delicious as the meal is, the preparation time, it feels so painful.
While watching your reaction, I reread the chapter and I noticed a small detail that made me love the chapter even more than I already did!! When Kaido declares Luffy's death and the Beast Pirates rush to attack Law and Kid, their crewmates come to their aid and protect them - but while doing so, one of Law's crewmates stands before Kid, while what I presume is one of Kid's crewmates stands in front of Law! It's such a small thing and could be entirely coincidental but for me, this feels like such a good way to portray the current alliance between not only the Strawhats and Law, and the Strawhats and Kid, but also between Law and Kid. Potentially also foreshadows a continuing alliance after Wano? Maybe? But that might be me reading way too much into one detail. It's pretty cool though imo and I love it :D

My theory at this point is that joyboy wasn't a person, but a title passed down that he held. And Zunisha is feeling that similar quality that all the great men in the one piece world share
Zunisha finally felt joyboys presence after Luffy "died" so the df might have awakened after he passed away momentarily

We already have this with Poseidon, so it's certainly possible.
I think it might be similar to sabos interaction with ace after eating his DF. So joyboy was a previous user of the gum gum fruit and he's communicating with him now and he's awakening his fruit

Yeah that's why he is the only One Piece UA-camr I watch regulary. Had to "block" some UA-camrs from showing up in my recommendations bc of their thumbnails and titles.

Theory pitch: considering the theme of death that preempts Joyboy, and considering the theory of immortality with the World Nobles…. Maybe the will of D. Is the will of death yearning to restore order in the OP world. This would explain why a near-death experience is needed to grow the inherited powers of D. Furthermore, this would certainly connect to Zoro facing the Grim Reaper.

Through the "reveal" of laws hearing, I hope the implication is that anyone can become/awaken the joyboy sprit when certain criteria are met, and luffy has just met all of them

one thing needs clarification: The fight wasn't labelled as Luffy vs Kaido. It was labelled as the Rooftop battle because honestly, Kaido fought the entire Mink tribe in their sulong forms, 4 members of the worst generations (although with help from Big Mom), Yamato, Momonosuke in his dragon form, Luffy twice, and even Red Scabbards at some point NON-STOP one after another. That entire sequence is the Rooftop Battle. It's not just Luffy vs Kaido. To think he is able to continue at full strength after Rooftop Battle is a testament to what kind of monster Kaido is. I'm thankful Luffy didn't just go up and beat him this time like he did with Katakuri.
as much as it pains me to say it, I think Oda might leave us hanging for just a little bit on this one, I think there will be a few chapters with everyone throwing what they have left at Kaido (Personally I still want to see what Yamato can do in full ice wolf form), him fighting them off, and at the last possible moment is when Luffy fully reappears in a new state for the final clash.

No, because typically when he uses *to be continued* it follows immediately with the next segment of the previous chapter.
Think about this: The CP0 guy has a drone fruit. He is able to create and steer a hollow drone. Nodding switches him with his hollow drone. He actually doesn't accept death, instead he escapes like a magician.

Theory: The fight was called the rooftop fight rather than luffy vs kaido because of the interference. If Kaido had beaten Luffy without Bob Lucci helping, then it would be Luffy vs Kaido: Kaido Wins. But because Lucci interfered, Kaido didn’t win a 1-on-1 against Luffy. Kaido is obviously stronger than Luffy, but the way the fight ended failed to *prove* that. Some Meruem vibes here, too.
i thinks it was called rooftop fight due to the fight starting with Kinemon and the Samurai vs Kaido and then Kaido's opponents switched multiple times until it was Luffy vs Kaido.

I think the drums of liberation is Luffy’s heart beat as it wasn’t beating, then after Zunesha said that it started again
1:55 It's interesting because when Kaido stabbed Kinemon he said that most can't accept death when it comes for them but that CP0 agent could. So even if he did interupt his fight with Luffy, Kaido should respect him a bit

The SFX in this chapter that shows Luffy's heart-beat is the thing that sounds to Zunesha as "Drums of liberation". This part is insane: those exact same SFX were used for the sounds of the drums going when Luffy was partying under the moon in Skypiea before he attacked Enel the next day and what's even crazier is that the silhouette of Sun God Nika and the Luffy partying/dancing stance that everyone compares the silhouette with was drawn in the same panel! Oda is INSANE!!
I'm starting to think Oda is doing this on purpose, he makes the biggest, most epic reveals just before a break, forcing of to wait 2 weeks for the answers.

Let him have it. It's good to have a little extra time to work on what comes after such reveals, because it must be awfully hard to keep up with expectations after those.

One idea I’ve just had, “Joy Boy” could be the devil or related to the devil parts of devil fruits, so it could be that any fruit user has the potential to be Joy Boy, but Luffy was just the one to do it

It's pretty clear that Luffy's fruit is special, it's something Oda has specifically set up in this arc.
@@manstar2600 There's nothing pointing to the heart beat affecting the environment tho, the only thing connected to the heart beat is Zunesha referring to it as drums of liberation.
The awakening is OP. He's making balloons. This would give him airpower. He could even be Uranus but only when awakend. He still had to go through thé Hero's journey, so that would Bé acceptable.
Those balloons hitting one another is creating the drum sound.
I've had the thought for a while that Luffy actually IS JoyBoy, and that after the story in the present is resolved, he'll somehow end up in the past where he'll go on to do all the things JoyBoy is currently know for.
I'm curious how this is all gonna play out in the long run. We still have Im, who will play some sort of importance, Blackbeard and Shanks are still in the picture, and the whole thing with Sabo. what a time to be alive

Crazy theory: maybe devil fruits are the actual “soul” or “essence” of specific individuals or “devils” in question. Like it was Joy Boy’s soul/essence that was contained in the gum-gum fruit and whoever eats it will gain all of their powers. That could explain why there can be only one of a specific devil fruit/user in existence at a given time.

I kinda have a feeling what Zunesha refers as "Joy Boy" is actually Luffy's Devil Fruit's Awakening powers. Like Zunesha sensed the power of the Gomu-Gomu no Mi/Legendary devil fruit has been "activated" and the last time he felt it was when Joy Boy used it.
This is the only theory im willing to accept. Joy Boy might be just a name of a specific form (like Snakeman) achieved through awakening of this fruit. So yeah, previous user of the fruit 800 years ago might have used the "Joy Boy" form, and Zunesha just remembers the characteristic energy.

My theory is that this is the way that one awakens their devil fruit. When a person is in near death situations and have the will to live, the devil inside the devil fruit comes out. They have to be able to not let the devil take over in order to control the power. This makes sense because Blackbeard may have multiple personalities and this could explain it(the devil inside his Dark-Dark fruit) could be another personality. We also haven't ever seen a person go through the process of awakening their devil fruit. In Luffy's case, the devil is Joyboy.
One of the theories that read that I really thought was very fitting was the idea that Death is how you become Joy Boy. This would explain why Kiado tries to dies all the time. Also the Will of D could be the Will of Death as in you have to have a will strong enough to cheat/overcome Death.

Since the beginning of Wano I’ve been thinking it wasn’t as good as most of OP… but honestly since the rooftop fighting started I began to have a greater appreciation for the entire arc so far. All the build up and it’s finally about to pay off.

what I was thinking is, joy boy himself was a giant being that had powers and when he died his powers got into a devil fruit and that's thr one luffy ate, making his powers the same as joyboys himself not the same devil fruit as he had
The whole rubber, resin, awakening, Nika thing ties together really well, considering natural rubber comes from the resin of the amazonian rubber tree (with Nika having a distinctly amazonian-looking silhouette). Perhaps the original Joyboy was a user of the gum-gum fruit

You're the only person I follow that I've seen talk about Law hearing Luffy's "voice." I thought it was really strange when I first read the chapter - I think at this point Law is definitely going to have a large hand in discovering what the will of D is. Although, earlier in the raid the fellas in the submarine also heard Luffy's "voice" when he got knocked off Onigashima, so it could be less substantial than I'm currently thinking. It is different from the sub situation though in the fact that Law hears Luffy's "voice" disappear rather than just hearing Luffy call out to him, meaning that he's been hearing Luffy's "voice" for at least a little while. It's almost like sensing ki in Dragonball or something - maybe it's just a form of observation haki doing some work, idk. Too hard to say right now, but interesting to think about nonetheless.

Maybe Law has the same type of Observation Haki as Koby. But with his abilities and experience he’s able to focus on one voice at a time and he chose Luffy’s.
Would not surprise me if the "gomugomu no of luffy" had the name "joy boy" as model name, like Zoan do. The reason would be that's it's not just gums, but the legendary fruit of a Toy, making the children smiles (and thus bringin joy to them).
To be honest, the whole "chosen one" taking a front row in One Piece worries me too, but not too much. I trust Oda's talent, I know he can spin this trope into something great, so I am just excited to see what's coming!

I agree that the final panel makes it seem that Luffy is melting into some sort of goop. However, if we are trying to connect things back to the idea of "Sun God Nika", he could be catching on fire. In other words, instead of becoming goop, he's being engulfed by flames, and the steam coming from his mouth and other places around him isn't steam, but smoke.
I've seen in different places that eating a devil fruit can result in being influenced by the previous user's personality. Maybe that's what's happening with Luffy, but on a much more powerful scale.
I think its just the will of previous user. Luffy was already like that even before he ate the fruit.

I love how Oda takes this shonen troop of the main character being this jolly, always smiling pure lad. (Something Goku began) and makes it an inintrinsical part of the story. Not only as a characteristic of the protagonist but as this sort of banner for a revolution announced in legend
Crazy Fan Theory: Joyboy is the devil in Luffy's devil fruit. Awakening is the devil waking up and taking over, which is why nobody can hear Luffy, since he is technically unconscious.

I really hope it isn't a reincarnation or split personality thing because I'm not a big fan of that since its been used in almost every shonen. I just hope in the next chapter Luffy will be talking to Joy Boy and Joy Boy offers him the awakening permanently but knowing Luffy he would probably decline and only ask for the awakening temporary because he is stubborn and wants to awaken his fruit himself.

Fun fact: Law's been hinted to hear the Voice of all Things before. Forgot what chapter but it was around Zou where Momo was talking about hearing Zunisha. There was an odd panel where they cut to Law being silent. So it's gotten me thinking that the one who called Zunisha this time around was Law
I reread the chapters of zunisha talking (chapter 820 & 821) and there is no panel of law.
Only luffy and Momo were hearing the voice of Zunisha and they were screaming and were in pain.
They show shocked face of nami, cat, dog and pedro saying oden and roger also heard the voice.
@@animeenjoyer1994 Try ch 818 around pg 13. It's when Momo was riding on Kin' back and mentioning how the closer they get to the whale the louder the voices become. Law's panel is a quick but notice how Momo's speech bubble is right on top of Law. None of the other bubble on the page do that even as they're transitioning between locations. It makes it seem like it was intentional to me
@@AgressiveMonkee I read it it is in chapter 817 (in my copies) but I don't think it is something to do with law but just that law heard there conversation and trying to figure it out.
Also I think some times it is used if the dialog is large.
It is a good observation but after that scene zunisha talked to momo and if law has voice of all things he could have heard the voice of Zunisha but did not heard it.
Let's see what happens in coming chapters and I don't think law will get VOAL because it is rare and also even if he gets it is no shock because now law has a interest to ponegylyph and it will be a perfect power to law.
@@animeenjoyer1994 That's completely fair and I agree, we need more info. But I think it's confirmed to me by the fact Law mentioned not hearing Luffy's voice this chapter in both the scans and the official. That phrase has been used by strictly VOAT users, at least as far as I can remember.

I think Luffy's just awakening his fruit instead of literally reviving as joyboy 💀. I think the awalening just does a similar the to gear second where his heart beats harder and faster but to an even greater extent. Zunesha saying it's joyboy is just a reference to joyboy having the exact same fruit and proof to just kinda solidify that luffy is the chosen one to inherit joyboy's fruit that nobody else has used since him
There HAS to be a reason why the SMILE fruits have the smile side effect. I wonder if it's supposed to be a feature. Kaido has to have had a plan. Also, I wonder if the straw hat is actually a MUCH bigger part of the plot than we already thought it was. What if IT has a devil fruit?
