    I am 59 years old and caught my first fish at just before my 3rd birthday. I love to fish. I don't care how long or how much experience you have fishing, what the deck hand did with the leader by wrapping it around his hand to land the marlin I would NEVER DO!!!! So many things could go wrong in the blink of an eye. Sorry, but never!!!!!!

    In the 80’s a mate off the coast of the Outer Banks was using the same method to hand-line a big marlin into the boat when the line parted between the rod and the mate - the fish dived, pulled him overboard into 3000’ of water, never to be seen again.

      Its called wiring, and you wrap the line in loops around your four fingers, never around the thumb if you want to keep it. This is done with every single Marlin caught on rod and reel, so no its not as dangerous as your making it out to be....

      @@jamieganderton sorry that’s nothing close to a striped Marlin!!! It’s rare for a striped marlin to be over 175, 200 pounds at the most. There have been larger but this fish is around 500 as it says in the headline. I also thought it was a black marlin until I saw it belly. It’s a blue these guys know what they’re doing perfect job by the leader man.

    Can someone tell me why I'm going to charter the fishing boat, pay to go out and catch big fish, only to have some boat hand bring in the fish the last final 20 yards? Why do they do this, why can't the angler bring the fish up to the side of the boat, and if need be - someone else release the hook / lure / rig from its mouth? My luck some fish of a life time and I have to watch some guy pull it in for me - lets all go sit in the deer stand together, I'll hold my rifle and you can pull the trigger?

      The knot from tying heavier leader doesn't always pass through the eyes of the rod and if it does it'll usually bind up in the spool.
      Also, if the customer is on a fighting chair. The downward angle of line will rub and fray against the transom.
      PS. most customers aren't in physical shape.

      @@rayzor196 Yes. Sometimes larger fish have a lot of trouble getting rid of all the lactic acid that builds up during the fight and they will die 24-36hrs later. Freshwater Muskies (Muskellunge) are especially prone to this which is why they are brought in and released quickly. You can even see their fins getting deep red as a sign from the stress of the fight - you release especially quick with those.

He definitely meant to release it. Why? Not sure. With the cost of diesel fuel every charter boat I know would've delivered her to the auction block. Marlin that size go for around $1.50 a lb. About an $800 fish 🙅‍♂️

      @kandykush4204 Рік тому

      The weight is estimated, very accurately, by length of the fish and large game fish should only ever come onto the boat if it’s being killed, the fight plus time on the boat for such a large fish would most likely kill it so it’s classed as a catch if the leader is touched by an angler to protect the fish!

    He can wrap because that's a minnow compared to what we haul in from Panama🤣. Just playing. Beautiful fish. A good mate who knows not to wrap full turns can do this safely but don't try it unless you've earned your stripes!!!

      It will die if you bring it in the boat, it has to keep water flowing thought its gills. Also when Your bill fishing once you touch the leader it is considered a “catch”.

    A guy was pulled overboard wrapping line like this handler is doing! Happened in North Myrtle Beach Arthur Smith Tournament a number of years ago.. Not a good way to handle a big fish!
