It was so interesting to see how many things they changed in the movies like Thror being killed by Azog way before the last war of dwarves and orcs, and Dain killing Azog in the battle, rather than Thorin relieving him of his hand.
Wait but does this mean that Azog being in a fight with Thorin in the movie is incorrect?
@@RientsDB yup, both of them. Unexpected Journey and Battle of the Five armies both have incorrect fight scenes, because Azog was long dead, as Movie thorin had actually believed before he fought him in the first movie. In my opinion, Jackson's verison was more interesting, as it gave Thorin, a protagonist we spend alot of time with, a moment to shine and show his good, especially as he was almost driven mad in this movie by the treasure, we grow distant, but then begin to love his character again. It gave the 3 in Durin's bloodline interesting endings, 2 being killed by Azog and the other by Bolg.
I thought thror was killed buy smaug
@@eimanb3887 funny
normaly i hear always stuff like that the movies are bad and books good
hearing that the movie did something more interesting then books is very rare haha
Both the movie and books are great
Thorin was a very compelling character.
Thorin is a punk ... but I guess no worse than the rest of those in the long line of punks in middle earth.
Like Frodo ... a total cheese head that would of ruined it all , if not for the heroic deeds of Smeagle .
@@Mk101T they were different Thorin was serious about everything after the orks assult and Frodo was not even after Bilbo disappeared and the peapole of The Shire started to hate him i mean they always did but no matter what Frodo is a good character the same goes whit Thorin there are differences but still
To each their own, i find thorin weak
I didn't actually read The Hobbit but I'm going to assume he was in the book. In the movie he sort of just went from being one kind of jerk to another.
It's interesting to note that the name "Thorin" is featured in the Icelandic Sagas, which heavily influenced Tolkien's writing. Meanwhile "Thorismund" was a real historical figure, and the son of Theodoric, the king of the Visigoths. The Visigoths allied with the Romans to defeat Attila the Hun at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451 AD, and this was a battle which inspired Tolkien's Battle of the Pelennor Fields in LOTR.
It should be noted that the war of the dwarves was absolutely critical to winning the war of the ring. The dwarves basically eradicated many orc holds in the misty mountains to the last orc. If they had not done so the war of the ring may have been lost.
all hail the king under the mountain!
It's so sad that they cut the long version of Thorins funeral scene from the film (even in the extended version). It was so heartbreaking to watch it the first time. It's one of the scenes where Gandalfs character as one of the Maia, especially a Maia of Manwe, being wise and caring for all living things. Also it's the most explicit scene where you can clearly see what it meant when it was said that Nienna taught Gandalf compassion. Ian McKellen just did a phenomenal job portraying that at Thorins funeral.
I think it was darn straight disrespectful to Tolkien. If Peter was given years of preparations like he did LOTR , it would’ve been a master piece
Where can I watch the extended funeral scene?! I didn't know it existed! 🥺
@@tjbfox769 ua-cam.com/video/4p2UMKUupvQ/v-deo.html
This is the best version of it I could find. You can see that it is a pretty early version since the greenscreen can be seen. But nevertheless I enjoy it pretty much because Ian McKellen gives such great emotion to it. Hope you enjoy it as well. :)
@@lukasbocker6740 THANK YOU! Yeah, they should have kept that in the movie.
Meh
As much as I might not like how much the movies differ from the books, I can't help but enjoy Azog as an antagonist in the movies. You can feel the history and hate he and Thorin have for each other and it makes Thorin's final victory over him very satisfying to watch, at least for me.
I think the same! It is the long hatred and history that made the final showdown so epic!
@@cuu899 the fight choreography at end was terrible.
It was a smart change! Different mediums need different things, and the movies needed a strong antagonist for Thorin to conquer
@@dantrag2890everything is “terrible” to u just enjoy the movie and shut up u couldn’t do half the acting these people do
WOW, nicely done!!!
Thorin is an interesting character, in the Movies: they change his timeline events-kind off!!!
But, At Least, Richard Armitage Knew his Tolkien Before Being Cast...Well Done for Thorin!!!
Richard Armitage was such a great choice as Thorin. The casting was spot on.
I think they had azog kill him because if the main character is just hit from behind by a simple orc and dies then peter jackson and the other film makers think people won't like it
They also forgot his eyepatch.
Richard Armitage is probably why I hate Thorin so much. And a fitting end would have been to trip on the gold cup landing on a sword.
Richard was amazing in this role!
I always tear up at Thorin's death scene in the Battle of the Five Armies movie. Now I am a big softy so that might have something to do with it, but (of course in my opinion) the scene was made perfectly. Bilbo holding his dying friend in his arms trying to tell Thorin, or himself, that he'll be okay, he'll live. And of course, if you've read the book you know unfortunately he dies. The actors truly did an amazing job. I also love what Thorin says before he dies in both the book and the movie, thank you Tolkien for that amazing quote. Thorin's quickly become my favorite character in the entirety of Middle-Earth. The true King under the Mountain.
"If more of us valued food and cheer and friendship over hoarded gold it would be a much merrier world" Thorin Oakenshield
Thorin is a fighter or ranger of some sort, a natural leader and capable.

@@NerdoftheRings I am binge watching all of your videos right now, very well done and fun to watch. I am learning a lot about the geography of middle earth as well.
Azog impression is on point
The immense tragedy is that Thorin died and never really saw Erebor reclaimed in its previous splendor.
Nice video!
god Thorrin's last words get me every time i always tear up when i read them or watch BOTFA
Thorin was a complex and melancholy figure. To be undone by greed after all he accomplished just heavies my heart. Luckily he wronged this right in the end. If not for these events and his plan in motion the fate of middle earth would have surely fallen to Sauron.
I loved how the hobbit was not only a movie about reclaiming erebor, but also how close Thorin, the dwarves, and bilbo grew after
Thorin, Adkhât, dashatu Durinul. He is my favorite character in lord of the rings, ever since I read The Hobbit as a kid. Thank you for this Nerd of the Rings!
Thanks for watching!!
I love your use of maps. The Gandalf video was my fav. Being able too see his movements in real time was very helpful
As a person whose native language isn't English I recommend that you should all read the English version of the books...I first read TH and Lotr in my own language but I'm reading them in English now... it's completely different... Tolkien is one of the few writers whose works can't be translated...it ruins it
Yeah definitely, I recently read the LOTR books first in Finnish and later in English, and it was a totally different experience. Especially since the books have such old English in it, it's a fascinating read. A lot is always lost in translation of any book or movie.
I think it depends which language, the french version of Tolkien stories are really well translate! And some tolkien books are hard to read, because there's a lot of content, like the silmarillion. So I think it will be hard to read in another language that you're not familiar with. But I agree with you, that it's always better with the original creation! I wish I will improve my english enough to read the real version!
Or maybe the translation to your language just sucks. It is true that there are things you cannot translate without losing some aspect or implication. And if the languages (source and target) are not related, then of course the versions feel quite different. I have been blessed by being a native Finnish speaker because the translation for LOTR in Finnish is widely appreciated.
Sometimes translations are awful and ruin the reading experience. However, in some rare cases, the translation can be as good or even better than the original. For me, the Harry Potter books are actually better when reading the Finnish translation.
Real shame Jackson had to include Azog in the Hobbit just to hive Thorin a nemesis. Would have been better to have Bolg instead with Beorn aiding Thorin to kill him. But I guess they needed an enemy for Bloom/Legolas, stupid reason.
I think in the commentary they said they didn’t really use bolg as the main antagonist because they didn’t want to introduce axog and then immediately kill him and get the audience to care about bolg. kinda weird, but that was their reason.
@@emilyknight2435 You could take care of it in one or two scenes: Introduce Bolg as the son of Azog, and give him a bad-ass villain speech about revenge and spite and how much he hates the Dwarves. Think _Wrath of Khan._
I really had a deep connection with these stories, i wish i was this creative to be able to imagine a full story like that. That is a true gift.
I appreciate your work on all of this. Thank you.
Really well made video on this tragic hero of ours who was intriguing and complex too.
Hoping for more awesome stuff in the future.

When I watched the movie when it came out. I was scared of the death of Thror, but this more scarier.
So the films changed very little. That’s awesome
Technically, the Eagles plus Bearn, were the fifth army, because the Orcs and Warts were one combined army
this was really good! 😸 thank you 💗

It annoys me how many good scenes were cut out of battle of five armies
This is pretty pogchamp

Fantastic video! If you don't mind a small correction to your credits - the illustration called 'Thorin, King Under the Mountain' (the one you also used as thumbnail image) is not by 'zero gravity' but actually 'gravity-zero' which is the deviantArt handle of illustrator Eleonor Piteira. I recognized the art and credits are important to artists! :)
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I will update it!
Where are you reading all of this history from, might I ask? I'd love to read more of these myself! Excellent videos by the way!!
10 years ago watch hobbit movie .. just now realize how awesome this stories
I wish you're videos were longer !!
You’ll definitely enjoy my next one then! 😁
Pity Dís never had a real role in the stories. If she had, I would have wished to see her in a cameo role in The Hobbit films. I don't even know why, but I would have liked to see Kelly MacDonald as Dís. (Yes, even with the subtle dwarf lady beard, LOL.)
That story was so much better than the films.
5:22 “This is no chance meeting is it, Gandalf?” 🤭
Of course not it's a plot required meeting
I like it when you use more film footage
I love the respect thranduil pays thor in when he dies
Respect? Thranduil is the worse elf lord! if Thorin had the sword he took from him he might still be alive, he only returned the sword after his death, its more of an insult. he was only fulfilling is own promise that he wouldn't get the sword back until after his death, he told him that when he took it. he pretty much caused his death imo. the dwarf's where always mistreated by the elfs for the most part. even the "God" wouldn't let them be born until his first creations the elf's had been born and lived in the world for 200 years. and Gimli was the only Dwarf to ever be let into Valinor, and that was probably due in part because of legolas.

The dwarves were awesome, esp as infantry :)
Great video!! Got so addicted!! Whats the song at 0:30?? Thx and keep good work there :)
A Fallen City by Kyle Preston. A beautiful piece of music!
i just love the hobbit movie,it has it bad chapters but overall is an amazing movie
The fact that the films rob Dáin of his killing of Azog eliminates his significance to Durin’s folk and his worthiness of being king. In the films we don’t know who he is, but in the legendarium, we see that he has earned the chance that he eventually gets.
Now you make Aulë happy...hey, maybe you could make a video about him too...
Why, in the movie, did Thorin not have a face like all the other dwarves, including his father. Thorin has a face more like a normal man.
hollywood
So do his cousins, because thorins bloodline is mixed with elves and men

Thorin oakenshield ❤️🔥🔥
Brilliant series man..in which book did you read about Thror and Nar going to Kazad Dhum and being killed by Azog and Azogs speech to Nar"If any of your people poke their foul beards in here again, they will fare the same.Go and tell them so"..I really want to read more about it.Thanks
I don’t have it in front of me, but I’m pretty certain it is in the appendices of ROTK. Either in the Quest of Erebor or Durin’s Folk section.
A worthy King under the mountain....
very nice man
what was Thorin actually doing outside the mountain when Smaug came? xd
...
xD
I don't think we are ever told what he was doing outside, so we can only guess. Maybe he was playing horseshoes with his friends. :)
@@NerdoftheRings
maybe trading recourses in Dale with Men, as they usually were when going outside the mountain...
thanks anyway bro, I wish your videos and page would get more attention and more views, your lore is far more detailed and precise than most LOTR pages on youtube... should had a lot more subscribers!
please carry on, cumpliments!
I think it said he was on an experdition or something like that
They say he was out hunting when Smaug came, it was Thror and Thrain who escaped through the secret door
thorin is a interesting character his past is the MOST interesting we know what happend in the movies but we only got the war in movies
There is also a german Hobbit Lore UA-cam... His name is "Ardko"... He is realy good.
Thorin, the royal burglar alarm.
I wonder how history would change if the dwarf's where the same as in Warhammer fantasy
I don't think much of anything would stand a chance against Gotrek.
Long live King under the mountain!
THIS IS SO SAD!
Is it just me, or did none of the movies accurately portray the strength and resilience of the Dwarves? Like when iron foot fights the elves and then the orcs i feel like they should have taken and dished out more damage?
Also for the dwarven fans here is a power metal band who sing pretty accurately about tolkiens dwarves! ua-cam.com/video/FnV0IW_tXvE/v-deo.html theyre awesome!
Also another great vid! Love the maps you animate too it really helps piece everything together
On the contrary. The Hobbit book actually exposes many weaknesses in the dwarf company that the movie does not expose. The real hero of the story is Bilbo, as without our favorite burglar, Thorin would have never gained access to the lonely mountain.
I think the movie did great service o the dwarves when we saw dwalin beating giant ass spiders with his bare hands, or when dain was headbutting orcs unconscious.
I did not get that impression, I think the movies portrayed the dwarves well. Did them a great service, too, by giving each of them their own characteristics and broadening the idea of what a dwarf is. And like was mentioned earlier, some weaknesses of the dwarves were not brought up in the movies.
i like the movie version where thorin kills azog
there is one i could follow , one I could call king
Does anyone know the name of the soundtracks used in this video?
thorin is a brilliant he really should've lived
What i am wondering is what the orcs eat when living in the mountain? What is some dwarves were to wall the exits shut? Would the orcs not simply starve to death within a few weeks or months?
I assume this is according to the book not the film ? Some one answer please
@Anjelica Snorcket thanks mate
I often wonder if Thorin ever realized Orcrist is more than 4000 years old?
Did you commit all this to memorize this or did you use references. If you memorized it how did you do it?
Ive read the Hobbit but its been awhile. The way people talk about it youd think they absolutely butchered the Hobbit but Im actually more surprised with home similar it is to the book & other events.
I love how in the movies, Thorin got called on so much like this "He is Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror!" He was called that multiple time in fact. Would Aragorn be called, Son of Arathorn son of- so forth and so forth? If so, please someoen make a parody
How come the orcs are basically fearless when it comes to living in moria isn't there a balrog in there ???😳🤔
Maybe Balrog considers them the servants of Morgoth/Sauron, which are the Lord and the co-worker of Barlogs, so, you know, you don't just destroy your boss' devices...
Where can I read all the information from the books?
oh so the movie really did change a lot from the source material
I don't remember the movie show thorin funeral? Was this after the credits???
It is in the extended edition. 😊
What is the music used at 2:02? Can someone please tell me if they know.
