Pretty big win on legolas' part that frodo decided to split up from the fellowship, he got to avoid a lovely long trudge through his ancestral burial swamp
It’s just really funny to me when Thranduil ordered Legolas to give words to Elrond that the Gollum had escaped and to found his son not returning for months, joining the fellowship to destroy the one ring. Like the awkward conversation between him and Elrond
lolol that is something to think about! Like Legolas asking, 'Hey dad can my friend Gimli comer?' or 'Hey I'm gonna go meet my friend at the glittering caves.'
Thranduil is interesting in that he is first introduced to us as one of the bad guys -- not evil of course, but an adversary to Thorin & Co. We come to see he is good and wise before the end. I've always liked the fact that when Five Armies began, Bilbo consciously choose to "defend the elvenking". No doubt that was his Tookish side talking.
He might be a stinkin' knifeear but along with Feanor he is the best Elven character in the entire mythos. All other Tolkien Elves' are shamelessly blatant mary sues and while he, Feanor and his sons are the only Elves allowed to have flaws and feel like actual characters instead of hamfisted idealizations.
@@nickkorkodylas5005 Well it's kind of easy to be a Mary Sue when you are the first children of god placed directly by his hand and are immortal. They aren't SUPPOSED to be flawed and relatable. Without Melkor's discord being mixed into the Music of the Ainur the elves would have been utterly perfect so idealization can actually be achieved by the best of the best of them. That's not hamfisted that is just one part of the varied bits of religious theme Tolkien put into his work.
At some point bilbo was the most influencial character of his time, wielding at once the one ring and the king's jewel, holding friend of elfs and dwarfs titles at once, favored by gandalf, friend with kings, finessed a freaking dragon and rode barells and many more feats, and THEN he went to valinor. No bigger adventure was ever achieved
I think Thranduil travels back to Valinor because at the end of the trilogy it tells that slowly every magical creature including hobbits leaves Middle-Earth as the Age of Men begins. I think Tolkien mentioned that basically, Lord of the Rings is a "history" before us. So when humanity came to be in the real-life that is the start of the Age of Men. But I can't remember where I heard/read about him saying it.
As an avid Tolkien fan for 55 years [my mother MADE me read "The Fellowship of the Ring" despite my English-major snobbery of "fantasy"], I've written, taught, published, and otherwise immersed myself in his works -- but I've never encountered anything approaching THIS version. THANK YOU!
I started to read The Hobbit to my 7 year old daughter. Well, she was fond of unicorns and little elves/fairies on flowerpetals and stuff. Now she thinks that elves are something more. I think that Smith of Wootton Major and especially Giles of Ham will be more than suitable for her :) And my little nephew, 5 years of age, when i recited the first passage of Hobbit smoothly continued: "nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat". Me and my brother were both awestruck, since he had heard the beginning of the book some 3 weeks before.
Oh wow! I just finish my fist read through of the hobbit and lotr! About halfway through the silmarillion! I'm absolutely loving. I just happened to find a $3 copy of the fellowship in my local dealer general. Picked it up and though, "I've heard the decent books." (I've never watched the movies.) I fell in love with Tolkien's world!!!!! I want everything he ever wrote on middle earth! Truly and absolute legend!

I'm hoping Thranduil is seen in The RIngs of Power in more of a Legolas role, as he was more of a "normal" elf while he and his father lived in Doriath, Oropher didn't actually become king until after the fall of Doriath. I want to know more about his relationship with Oropher, and what drama must have happened between him and Gil-galad to keep him from wanting to wait for the charging order like the other elves. Since a lot of things took place in Doriath, it would make sense if he and his father could appear.. Apparently they also felt that Galadriel and Celeborn encroaching on their space as well wasn't good, so they kept moving north. The Sindar seemed to be the most "hippie" and nomadic, basically drifting around and living life in the forests and wanting to cut themselves off from politics and the outside world.
Say what you will about the Hobbit movies, but Thranduil's actor did a great job in his role. He really represented how cold elves could be towards those they perceive to be their enemies

Legolas described having a longing for the sea. I'd imagine his father and the majority of his people felt it as well. In all likelihood Thranduil eventually travelled across the sea to the Undying Lands. Though it's possible that some percentage of his people decided to stay behind and eventually fade away.
I have always thought that Thranduil would stay in his realm for the fourth age, and that the woodland realms would be one of the last lands inhabited by elves, along with lindon. I would not be surprised if he and what few elves remain participate in the retaking of Moria
I'd love to know more about the retaking of Moriarty in general. I love almost everything about LotR, but Moria is probably my favorite setting in the whole mythology.
That has always been my feeling as well, given his disdain of the Noldor. Only Legolas leaving might one day, long after Legolas had left, induce him to lead his people to Valinor. Maybe in the Fifth Age.
I often like to think of what the dwarven company thought of bilbo's escape from capture and his breaking them out of the elvish prison. They didn't know he had the one ring, so they had to think hobbits truly were magical and able to very nearly disappear all on their own.
Actually, according to the book (movie butchered the plot), by the time Thranduil captured the dwarves, they DID know he had the ring. He showed it to them in Mirkwood, and Bilbo talked to Thorin while invisible in the dungeons.
love the videos, just wanted to say that this is my favourite middle-earth lore channel; you have such a pleasant voice, great pronunciation and diction. When dealing with Tolkien's language that really helps to set you apart from everyone else. Keep up the great work.
I always believed that Thranduil and his men remained in Middle Earth and became "mountain spirits" as Tolkien described them. And we should mention that Thranduil probably fought against Morgoth during the War of Wrath.
When I was reading the Hobbit in 12th grade English, the description of the Mirkwood elves and the Elvenking reminded me so much of Goethe's Erlkönig poem, which is about a spooky elf king who hunts children in the forests. I don't know if that's where Tolkien got his inspiration for Thranduil, but I can definitely see him and his followers diminishing into spectral beings, forever haunting lonely woodlands. At the same time I want him to go to Valinor too and live happily forever 😭

But when it comes to Elves I would recommend to check out 'The Silmarillion' for their history. The Elves only seem to calm down in the later age in which The Hobbit and later on Lord of The Rings take place.
Probably the most interesting character in The Hobbit movies, even though im gutted we never got to see Glorfindel Ever!! Lee Pace absolutely annihilated the role.👹🤺
"Bilbo gives a necklace that probably costs a hunderd millions of dollars" Thranduil: wow that was very cash money of you! In return, your are now a frend : ) .
It would be a big help if you included what Tolkien works you drew from for each video in case we want to research some more. Thanks for all your work!
This was the first time I ever saw the actor Lee Pace in action. He's got some really good movies under his belt and a show about IBM computers rise to power but I forget the name of it. He really brought this character to life and his eyebrow game is second to only Moistcritical
Great job with this series. If possible can you either do more videos during the age of Morgoth, or do a history of the other areas of Middle Earth(ie. Nurn, the Iron Mountains, and what happened with the men of the east and south during the ages.).
Something that almost never gets mentioned in these sorts of videos is that being held prisoner by the elves, the Sylvan elves included, was very pleasant. They only locked up the dwarves in the Hobbit because Thorin had all but spit in Thranduil's face and Thranduil remembered the night the dwarves tunneled into the city of Menegroth and slaughtered a bunch of elves in their sleep and sacked the city and stole the Silmaril, which they later lost deep underground, the stunty bastards, but I digress. Golum even got to get taken for walkies, which admittedly is how he escaped. He and his escort were ambushed but orcs and the escort was fine, because of course they were, but Gollum got away, the stunty bastard...
Hopefully Thrandruil shows up in the Rings of Power series. He should have been introduced in Season one but there are four more seasons to tell his story.
Two small corrections: Oropher was killed in The Battle of Dagorlad after 5 years of different battles of the War of the Last Alliance. The Battle of Dagorlad was the major battle, not the first one. Thranduil's reign started in the late Second Age (SA 3434) after Oropher's death. But his coronation was at the start of the Third Age. Accession to the throne and Coronation are two different events. Usually coronations are held in the most significant Realm's place thus Thranduil's coronation took place in the Woodland Realm after 7 years. Example from our world: The accession of Queen Elizabeth II took place on 6 February 1952, but her coronation was held only on 2 June 1953 (1,5 years later). Tolkien was familiar with this stuff very well , he witnessed 6 reigns and 4 coronations.
Another TOP notch travels video, Keep it up :). One thing i always wondered about Thranduil was the line He said In the movies ( I have faced, the Great serpents of the north)His best Line in the movies IMO.
Thanks my friend! I believe in the film he is referring to the dragons of Angband in the first age. That would make the most sense, as they were involved in the War of Wrath.
I am very thankful to this channel and to this playlist, for i am learning more about LOTR's lore and characters. Having been unfortunate to not own the books, i only know about the movies which i grew up watching, starting at the age of 4. This channel is perfect ❤️
Yeah kind of wished that Peter Jackson added a quick flashback sequence like during the Council of Elrond or when the Fellowship entered Lorien to give more context on why the Dwarves and Elves didn't really trust one another because of the Nauglamir and the Dwarves killing of King Thingol being where it started at clearly!
In a small group discussion over the Last Alliance, have tried a what if exercise. In Tolkien's lore, the Sindar that joined the Last Alliance suffered heavily. Thranduil's own Father perished. The what if is that the Last Alliance succeeded! Elven numbers dwindle in Middle Earth, and Greenwood becoming a refuge for Sindarian Elves. Apart from the Grey Havens, Greenwood holds the bulk of Elven numbers. The Sindar would withdraw to Greenwood, guarding their realm. The Third Age would be much changed, but Smaug and Durin's Bane would still be there.
Dunno if this is explained somewhere else but in the movies, Thranduil tells Thorin to not lecture him on dragon fire. (We see Thranduil's face become deformed when he says this.) Is there an explanation for this? Did he fight against Morgoth's dragons in the War of Wrath? Or is this just a movie thing to make the screenplay more exciting? I had always wondered if the reason that Thranduil was so upset with the Dwarves was that he got caught up in their war with the dragons. Or that he was maimed in the War of Wrath.

At the same time I want him to go to Valinor too and live happily forever 😭
bright up my day like always
the way you share Tolkien with YT its amazing and inspiring
my dream is to create mini middle earth in 3d- highly detailed with all the lore and characters
So when did Thranduil have a meet and greet with the great serpents of the north?
Thranduil surely fought against the dragons during the War of Wrath
It did not actually happen, it was added to Thranduil in The Hobbit to give the character some more background and depth.
@@TaskForce-ql3bx But it is highly likely he fought dragons. Since he literally was in a battle against dragons... that means that he DID fight dragons at one point. So what are you talking about?
@@Gnossiene369 likely, not confirmed. He COULD have gotten those scars, but again not confirmed, it would be cool as shit if it was confirmed and luckily it’s a fantasy so Thranduil fought dragons beebee
@@jengjeng9444 It wad mentioned in Silmarillion that nobody who lived in Beleriad took part in it, it was fought solely between forces of Valinor and Morgoth's
it is good to watch these video's it gives me peace if not for a moment and in a fantastical place, that someday good will triumph over evil in our time and on our land!! as it should! keep up the great work!
I have not read the books yet but I love the elves. They're so calm and beautiful. There is something about their race that hypnotizes me. Love them
They are much less calm in the books 😅 Some of them are quite brutal haha
@@FaeSparrow Pls do tell. I am very clueless what Thranduil is like in the books :)
@@kendallm3 Unfortunately we don't know much about Thranduil since he is only mentioned briefly in the books (and he is only referred to as the elven king) in 'The Hobbit' book. But when it comes to Elves I would recommend to check out 'The Silmarillion' for their history. The Elves only seem to calm down in the later age in which The Hobbit and later on Lord of The Rings take place.
@@FaeSparrow Thanks, I will check it out. :)
So happy you make this, Im so obsessed with Thanduil
Probably the most interesting character in The Hobbit movies, even though im gutted we never got to see Glorfindel Ever!! Lee Pace absolutely annihilated the role.👹🤺
This video really tells the story of Thranduil
This video was so informative. Great to see the conclusion of a few story arcs.
"Bilbo gives a necklace that probably costs a hunderd millions of dollars"
Thranduil: wow that was very cash money of you! In return, your are now a frend : ) .
It would be a big help if you included what Tolkien works you drew from for each video in case we want to research some more. Thanks for all your work!
I been waiting for this. Well done!
This was the first time I ever saw the actor Lee Pace in action. He's got some really good movies under his belt and a show about IBM computers rise to power but I forget the name of it. He really brought this character to life and his eyebrow game is second to only Moistcritical
You truly are a master orator and story teller. Your endings are especially wonderful, as I feel I am departing with hope and kinship.
Great video as usual, very easy to follow along and understand! Have a good day.
Great job with this series. If possible can you either do more videos during the age of Morgoth, or do a history of the other areas of Middle Earth(ie. Nurn, the Iron Mountains, and what happened with the men of the east and south during the ages.).
Yours is the best LotR related channel I have seen. Keep up the great work, my friend!
Thank so much! Thank you for watching!
Nice work dude
The 'Gollum even got to get taken out for walkies' had me laughing, thats such a cute way to word it.
Great video Matt!! This is one of my favorite series on your channel. Keep it up!!
Hopefully Thrandruil shows up in the Rings of Power series.
He should have been introduced in Season one but there are four more seasons to tell his story.
Two small corrections:
Oropher was killed in The Battle of Dagorlad after 5 years of different battles of the War of the Last Alliance.
I love reading about Thranduil's ascension and coronation, thank you.
i love these journeys depicted from different perspectives.
Thranduil is the perfect elf, the most beautiful movie character design i have ever seen... Lee pace very handsome
@@NerdoftheRings was thranduil involved in war of the wrath?.
YAY!! A new LOTR video! Life is GOOD!
Stellar top quality video man. Please do keep it up.
Love your travel videos. Map, date, icons, awesome!
Another great vid! Just finished rewatching the hobbit trilogy, so this was well timed 👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
why did I end up crying? Great work!
Love these videos! Nice job as always
I looked through my history on UA-cam and the past 2 days I have only watched nerd of the rings XD
Not a bad way to spend a couple days on UA-cam. 😁
Thanks so much for doing these. You pack so much info in these. They're fascinating 👏
I am very thankful to this channel and to this playlist, for i am learning more about LOTR's lore and characters. Having been unfortunate to not own the books, i only know about the movies which i grew up watching, starting at the age of 4. This channel is perfect ❤️
Thank you! Learned so much, and didn't remember some of what I had forgotten! Thanks for the pre and post histories.
Excellent presentation and explanation.
He is the coolest elf king ever in the movies so far
Id Love if the Next video was about the black numenoreans 🙂
We all thank you @NerdofTheRings for another awesome video 👍😊👌🎉
The ending where dwarves and elves work together as one, brought me to tears.
lee pace’s portrayal of thranduil is soo amazing
I really love how you bring this story to life ❤
Could you please make a complete history of Aragorn?
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
Thanks! I actually have a video that covers Aragorn up to LOTR: ua-cam.com/video/5aPrSyKE3oE/v-deo.html
Enjoy!
@@NerdoftheRings YOU ARE AMAZING!!!
Loved this one. Wow!
My favorite elf! 🤩🏆✨
I know he isn't real but i hope in that fantastical fantasy world that he exists in, he sails and joins his son in the undying lands.
