This song reminds me a lot of my teens and early 20s, doing a lot of desperate and dire, unnecessary things to "find yourself". After the fact you realize you always knew who you were but were trying so hard, in vain, to express how you felt to others through actions. In the moment you didn't realize those actions not only misrepresented who you were but also alienated you from those whom you cared about, the people you were trying to get to understand you. That doesn't negate the emotions you were feeling, only that you weren't wise enough to know how to explain them; a tragic paradox that comes with maturity. The entire album feels like memories of important, often failed negotiations between self and reality; each track has this nervous energy and yearning to correct a charged, honest misstep. Reminds me of Mirror by Tarkovsky. A very mature album, glad to have found it.

    • @dreamplace7469

I believe they most likely mean the more flat delivery that's characteristic of new wave or shoegaze. It's a part of the style of the music. Sure there's plenty of emotion in the voice, but the vocal delivery is "flatter" than other genres of music. Sounds more detached.

I mean, you look at all the junk (not all of it, of course) that's been over-the-top successful, and then on the other hand, almost every week I find musicians on the internet who have a certain following, but I'm like, "Oh my god, how awesome is that!" and I wonder why I've never heard of it or only in passing.

Is there a powder to erase this?
    Is it dissolvable and tasteless?
You can't imagine how I hate this
    Graceless
    I'm trying, but I'm graceless
Don't have the sunny side to face this
    I am invisible and weightless
You can't imagine how I hate this
    Graceless
    I'm trying, but I'm gone
    Through the glass again
    Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine and I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
    Graceless
I figured out how to be faithless
But it would be a shame to waste this
You can't imagine how I hate this
    Graceless
    I'm trying, but I'm gone
    Through the glass again
    Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine and I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen
All of my thoughts of you
    Bullets through rotten fruit
    Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the white ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us
    Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it'll brighten the place
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
    Grace
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows without you
All of my thoughts of you
    Bullets through rotten fruit
    Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means
I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the white ones, they're my favorites

Someone else thinks that this is all about being dead?... Think, they are all dressed in black, the old man seems not to notice all the reckless things they are doing, and the lyrics... talking about dying, bringing roses(to the graveyard?), walking through windows , I am invisible and weightless,.... all the lyrics seems to revolt around it, i dont know, am I just crazy? Someone who thinks the same?

Yes. I'm not saying the band is gothic, if that's what you're thinking. Gothic synths are heavily used for the verses and as a support for the bass. Are you familiar with the characteristics of synths? specifically gothic ones?

Oh, the days of smelling the grass in wee-hours. Had a girl back in the day that had a summer college gig at a local golf course mowing. We would party all night and get stupid. I would amble (somehow) home at dawn-ish. I would then bring her something to eat at her break. Memories😁

    DESENCANTO (GRACELESS) - THE NATIONAL
    Desencanto
¿Existe un polvo para borrar esto?
    ¿Es soluble e insípido?
    No imaginas cuanto odio este
    Desencanto
    Lo intento, pero estoy desencantado
No poseo el lado bueno para encarar esto
    Soy invisible y etéreo
    No imaginas cuanto odio este
    Desencanto
Lo intento, pero me he marchado
‘A través del espejo’ otra vez
    Sólo ven y encuéntrame
‘Dios ama a todos’, ni me lo recuerdes
Tomé las píldoras y he desaparecido
Sólo déjame escuchar tu voz, sólo déjame
    Desencanto
    He descubierto cómo ser embustero
Pero sería una pena desperdiciar esto
    No imaginas cuanto odio este
    Desencanto
Lo intento, pero me he marchado
‘A través del espejo’ otra vez
    Sólo ven y encuéntrame
‘Dios ama a todos’, ni me lo recuerdes
Tomé las píldoras y he desaparecido
Sólo déjame escuchar tu voz, sólo déjame
    Todos mis pensamientos sobre ti
Balas a través de sesos podridos
    Al borde del colapso
    Ahora sé qué significa morir
    No soy un tipo entusiasta
Deja mis rosas sobre el estante
Conserva las blancas, son mis favoritas
Pues los efectos secundarios nos salvan
    Encanto
