What getting more clear to me is that the original builder of this bike was clearly a gear head. Harley engines are crapola. Maybe these old engines and bikes are cool for the time, but it’s down right amazing how Harley continued with their piss poor design for so long. I mean present day Harley riders are literally upset at Harley for finally upgrading their tech to the modern day simply because “it doesn’t sound like a Harley anymore” jeeeeeezus.

I really want to get it running but it's hard to know, where to start, what's salvageable, what's valuable, what's original, etc. There aren't many experts around to help. Many of us have had dads who got deference because of their strong personality, experience and knowledge, and they started the business, so they ran the show. As time wears them down, they become more agreeable and patient, and the torch slowly gets passed. The best we can do is give our kids all the tools they need to thrive when we're gone. You guys are 'old school' bikers and I'm loving it! Back in the day everyone worked on their own machines and HAD to or they'd not stay rideable. When Honda was trying to expand the market in the '60's they introduced bikes to 'consumers' who bought, rode but couldn't work on them...much as we have today. Anyone at the mercy of a dealership mechanic isn't 'getting' what it meant to be a biker. I know people who love to ride but can't fix their own bikes...and I'm always encouraging them rather than taking the bike to another mechanic....invest in the tools and DIY!
This Harley you have is a different animal and good on you for finding someone who knows the minutia and history to give you a hand. Harley's are their own breed of cat and there's lots of specialized knowledge that you need to have to do a good job on them. Will be interesting to see where you go with this build!

I’m sure Dale is so proud looking down on Matt. Honoring his legacy and carrying on the vision for the Wheels Trough Time Museum. Matt’s knowledge is encyclopedic, very impressive. The Maggie Valley is such a beautiful place. Everyone should have this visit on their bucket list. Thanks for another great episode and for your offer to restore Ed’s Rokon from MORR. Another cool machine. God bless you guys.

12:25. When I was in my teens I had a Honda 305 Super Hawk. On a rebuild I ground all the rough forging lines off of the rocker arms and really slicked them up. Before it floated valves just passed 9,000 RPM. After the polishing it could rev passed 10,000. Knocking off the dead weight worked!

My only visit there was in 2008, and Dale was just rolling in from a big bike show on a 1905 ish leather belt drive motorcycle that he rode over 500 miles that day. He asked us for help to put it up on a display table, and told us to pick out a hat from the store. We had no idea who he was. Super nice guy. Great place to spend a day.

In the late '60s I picked up a complete WR motor with tall fin aluminum heads. What impressed me was that the cams ran in caged ball bearings rather than brass bushings, like regular HDs.
