It has come to my attention that I may have purchased a non authentic motorcycles which makes me wonder. Did I just lose $14,000 on a fake 1948 Indian Motorcycle? we are going to find out today.

His Father Dale (RIP) was the guy that started it all and it looks like Matt learned quite a bit from him. I'm glad he is keeping it in good hands. When Dale had his Harley shop in Ill. I went to check out a new bike...Ten minutes later we forgot about buying a new bike and he was giving me a tour of his museum, for 2 hours starting bikes, letting me sit on them and told me he was going to sell the dealership and moving the museum...His knowledge was insane, I'm glad Matt soaked it up and has kept it going as the museum that runs.
Every MC enthusiast owes themselves a pilgrimage to Wheels Through Time. Dave was such a great guy. He spotted the Indian patch on my jacket and introduced himself and guided me to George Hendee's personal Indian. He took the time to chatted about Indians, sharing some of his knowledge and showing me other Indian artifacts of interest. It seems that his son is of the same caliber as his father. Great museum and good people.
I used to watch his shows.. he was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge!!! Great Man!!!! Keep up the amazing work!!!

Met this guys several years ago while going through the museum with my dad and grandfather. He brought out a vintage Harley with a sidecar and gave us rides on it while doing crazy stuff like wheelies! What an awesome guy and great memory.
LOVE the direction the channel is going. When SRK was selling bikes I would learn all about bikes that I could buy. Now I'm learning bike history! Can't believe this is free content! God bless

@@bigjim7230 I agree to an extent. I think people want to see these things restored. I bet we have dad's that might have owned a 48 indian and would love to see this process. But my bikes are dirty and rode hard. My friend cleans his s1k all day hates hitting a little bit of water it ruins his day me I'm on my 22 speed triple 1200 bugs all over the front dirt grease from the chain ripping it
@@californiapoontappa Yes sir. I've been around motorcycles from birth I grew up in a family that's been riding with a notorious motorcycle club sence the 50s. I flat track ice and dirt along with dirt hill climb and snow hill climb and rebuild vintage bikes. For a living. Shiny bike's r cool. I have show queens originals. The problem with them are when someone hits u and kills your original. Then your loosing money. So most the time the just sit in the living room. I have 23 bikes so I'm sure my out look is different
Matt and Wheels Through Time are awesome. The hospitality you get there is second to none. That place captures the soul of American Motorcycles.

During covid shutdown, they went through, pretty much the entire museum, and posted videos on youtube. Their channel is awesome. I have it running in the background when im in my garage working on my bike.

I owned a 46 and a 48 Chief and the shifter was on the right and the throttle was on the left. We switched them to the opposite side like a Harley since I had a 1933 Harley at the same time I had the 48 Indian. It made sense to have the shifter and throttle match the Harley for safety reasons. I live in Alabama I'm retired I know these old bikes.
After I bought my Triumph from you guys I found SRK cycles, (and even before I bought my bike from you) Bikes and beards very addictive. I got worried about the future of these channels, and that bikes and beards would disappear once SRK closed. With this kind content both the WLA and the Indian project I find a lot of people getting very addicted to this content. Kudos Sean and Craig!!!

Matt has forgot more about vintage bikes than I'll ever know.
I wouldn't do much of anything to that Indian other than a few little items...it's much cooler crusty than restored.

Always like hearing an expert expand on a topic, especially regarding motorcycles. Matt has no ego and is a wealth of knowledge. Not a big fan of American bikes but find these videos fascinating!
Saying your not a fan of American bikes, is probably not true, I'm personally a Kawasaki fan, mostly from my younger years riding ninjas, and I love the new gold wings, most all newer Japanese bikes are so smooth and nice, but any vintage bike is cool, I would never want to ride one, but would love to have one hanging in my garage, just not ever going to be a Harley fan but I do respect the bike, just not my style, stay strong

Wow! Unreal. You would go and spend $14,000 on a bike that you didn’t even look for the VIN or engine number???? That is such a rookie move. A collector worth their salt would at least check the VIN & title before raising a bidders paddle. INCREDIBLE NOVICE BUY!

man... that took me back to the day.... i bought one for hundred dollars ( i was bout 12 and it was bout 6 months wage from working in a feedlot )... it was stripped, no fenders, leaked, bad tires and brakes BUT it got me to work and back ( i had to curb it on a hill cause it wore me out kicking it ) i would tie my tools to it.... i had to hide it from my folks but they found out when the cops chased me one day... oh well... i traded it off for a 48 willy with a flat head 4

I could lose myself for days in that beautiful place, Matt, you are a lucky man, I design modern things but my heart lies in the past. My first motorcycle was a "Panther 650 Single", I found it on the Tip(dump) when I was 12, not one single piece was joined to another, I had to pay my old man to pick it up for me(unfortunately he was a POS) I re-built it with a handful of basic tools & no manual, & I was "Hooked", I sold that to one of my teachers for a fortune, & from there I bought basket case after basket case, I sold them to cover the cost of racing Motocross & Production Bikes, those were better days. the Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd, well 2 strokes really but I'm sure you know what I mean. Fabulous once again, thank you.
The Harbor Freight sandblast cabinet needs to be taken apart and rebuilt with lots of silicone to seal it up. Once you do that it's not a bad cabinet for a cheapo.

I had no idea these bikes were still this affordable. I would take it just they way it is had I the bucks and not change a thing except maybe fix the missing stuff and a part here and there. This bike has tons of character. But I am retired and on a fixed income and can't get out from under debts (joys of home ownership with a cracked slab). However not all is bad, I get to volunteer at a museum with nice 1909 Thor, 1918 Indian, and 1920 Triumph motorcycles with old airplanes and lots of running Model T's. One can't have everything but it is fun to dream and it is great to operate these vehicles on a rural site. Also built a full size running replica model WWI tank that is a hoot to drive and and several motorized bikes that were set up to look like 1910 era motorcycles. Life is good.
What kind of old airplanes do they have over there?
I am definitely a fan of old stuff. My current ride is fairly new. 99 Harley Softail custom. I rode an 84 Iron Head XLH Sportster for 23 years. But there is nothing like a radial airplane engine. Harley engines are in reality a 2 cylinder radial engine.

Those are definitely adapted 40-42 Scout tanks, and the cast aluminum dash is a 38-42 Scout and Four cylinder, and 38-47 Chief. They went to a stamped steel one in 48 all the way to 53 when production ceased.
The 47-53 tanks were smooth sided with 3 5/32" screw mounts that held a stamped chromed brass Indian script logo.
Matt ,u need to pitch the overhead door tracks up to keep tension on cables when u open door fully .also extension springs can be put on bottom of cables to prevent them from coming off drums
I drove a 250 cc dual purpose Kawasaki KLX from Nashua to West Palm Beach (1500 miles) back in 2014. My nuts were riding up on the tank because I had a bunch of "stuff" strapped on. It was in the fall and the weather was perfect. Well, sort of. One day I drove on I-95 from Parris Island and it was a 95 degree day. As I drove south I hugged the right side of the road to catch as much tree top shade as I could. When it finally rained north of Titusville it felt so good to get wet. I stopped at a rest area and talked with the security guard. When I came back to my bike the crank case was slippery. I used it to swing my leg over my tent, sleeping bag and a whole bunch of other things. I kept slipping off. I knew the security guard could see my performance from his tinted little room inside the rest stop so I moved the bike down a bit and mounted it from the right side from the sidewalk. I made it back to my home later that night and got showered and changed only to end up selling it for chump change. Motorcycles can be like woman. Some cost you a lot more than others. And most of them all suck. In a good way.

I love that bike. It's like Matt says, its a bike that has been used and carry traits of "owners customs" - far from stock - but without being butchered. And with a few bucks and over time it can easily be restored as a more original (looking) example of a great bike. In the meantime, it's a great ride to be enjoyed.

With a correct 1948 engine, frame and fork, this one is a good candidate for a full restoration. I wish Matt had gone over your 45 with this degree of detail.
I hate to say this, I'm not really a HD person, BUT DAMN! I just learned more than I ever knew about the 48 Indian Chief! He had me glued to every word about that bike. Incredible.

My great-Aunt bought a new 1948 Chief making her the first Indian owner in Sarasota. She used to regale us with stories of “chicken races” they had on the beach. I’ve always dreamed of getting to ride one of these.
We have a 46 in parts that we've had since I was 8.. the gas tanks are in PERFECT condition other than needing repainted.. unfortunately Mississippi rust got to a lot of the rest of it and it was likely flooded at some point as the engine and trans were both completely full of rust and most of the internals were junked. Nice to hear that replacement fenders aren't frowned upon though... should I ever get the money to fix it.
It only took me 40 years to get the money to rebuild my 38 indian four! All it did was increase in value from $900 to $40/60? k and it doesn't take up a lot of room, like vintage cars! Maybe by the time you get it going it will be worth 2 or 3 million, considering inflation!

The 48 Chief was the first to use a stamped steel dash, it contained the ignition switch forward, speedo centered and the aGen light aft. The Indian jocky or tower shifter was a police accessory, it entered the trans tower on the left side, great for quick positive shifts. There were actually 2 48 frames. The earley one had a tubulare spreader in front ot the rear fender, the later ones used a curved solid steel piece in it's place. These followed through to the end of production in 54. This bike is earley, subtract 101 from the production number to determine it's actual nice number.. I have the earliest 48 Chief I' ve ever seen, CDH 313, actually the 212th 48 Chief built.. The bike controls could be Harleyised, even the clutch pedal could be reversed Ala HD. There never was a shift gate on the tank. All together a very good start for your guest.

The guys at wheels through time really know their stuff, that's a 74 year old bike that means 74 years of repairs upgrades and customization as far as value goes riding a bike like that is priceless

I got a rough looking [all matching numbers] 38 Indian four, I rebuilt the engine clutch & traney thinking I will make it look pretty later, a majority said leave it the original petenia! So I did, It can only be original, once! So what if my bike is 7 years older the me, I'm still "proud" & thank God, that I can still ride it & wrench on it! I was in North Carolina about seven years ago and I had no idea that wheels through time existed. I wish so bad I knew about it back then because I would absolutely love to go there. I could stare at vintage motorcycles and parts and gear all day long. It would be so cool to learn from Matt. I live in Maui so chances of me going to NC are pretty slim because it’s so far away and I don’t know anyone there. But I really hope I go someday.

I met Matt's dad Dale a few times and he would always stop and talk with my boys who stood in awe of all the bikes. They loved the war display. There was an older tall guy there also who was cool. His name escapes me. Hope ya restore it shes a beaut

Since I am 82 years old, I remember back when there was Harley and Indian. Like Ford and Chevrolet.

Most we very brand loyal. My first Harley was a 1942 "45" Flat head in 1955 when I was 14. Traded a 37 Chevy, a Winchester single shot 12 ga. shot gun, and $20.00 for it.
It had the big buddy seat on it. I asked a girl if she wanted to go for a ride. We were at a school track meet at a town four miles away. She said yes, and we went for a ride, and we celebrated our 63rd wedding anniversary on June first this year. Thank God for Harleys. She has been the best thing that ever happened to me on earth. Other than John 3:16.

Interesting ~ the front fender is fiberglass yet it's dented ~ looks like someone mis represented the bike from the get go .
On the other hand, although $14,000 is a _LOT_ of $ to many (me anyway) I'd think a good running Indian at this price isn't too bad .
From what I see at the Moto Jumbles you can buy pretty much every part to assemble this bike brand new so the co$t is relative, too much $ for me but I can't find any PanHeads for $14,000 so this looks okay .

47 dash, 48 was a bigger stewart warner speedo and front wheel drive. 41 scout tanks so the bottom mount is different. The patina is hot right now, restored ones are all over everywhere. Personally I'd leave it. Great rider the way it is,
I love its character
I'd just clean it up a bit (comfier but still aged saddle), and leave it... It tells a story just by looking at it. Someone loved it and probably grew too old to ride, and thankfully it wasn't left to rot or parted after that.

Beautiful ride. That bike was made 10 years before me. I would put steel fenders back on it and change the shifter to forward but she's awesome and you done good getting that ride. Awesome video thank you for sharing be safe and GOD bless
