      No need to watch this long video to learn what you may already know: 1) delayed gratification makes you a better human. And 2) there will be consequences of consequences of what you do today, always act accordingly.

    Short term thinking: Not telling a girl you like her. It may be easier for you right now but 10-20 years from now you will look back and think "What if".
    Long term thinking: Man I really like her but I don't like telling her because it's scary and makes my stomach turn 20 times. Still did it, got rejected. But there will never be a "What if".
    That's what I did last month. It's just a small thing but long-term thinking is something I learned from Sam. Thanks man!

    This video is beast mode like so much of Sam's other stuff. Love the low-quality, high-content. I'm finally climbing the right hills in my physical health (pushing my daily workouts and meditation harder), my songwriting (studying and writing new material every day for hours), and my business-building (busting my ass daily to push forward on clear priorities for growth). There's a long way to go but I've felt the momentum shifting in the right direction and I feel better than ever before.
    Sam's message hits close to home because all my current challenges in life come because of all the times I took the wheelchair path (even when I thought I was being clever, I was just "deferring payment.") And you're right, the more you go up the big hills, the more you start to dominate in all areas - I'm not even talking competitive - just dominating yourSELF in the best way possible

      What do you think about the rather stoic, anti-pleasure implications in this video? Going by the logic in this video, being a songwriter, aren't you selling auditory donuts? I disagree with said stoic implications myself, but I was interested in how you square the circle here?

    • @phoenixplanner1786
      @phoenixplanner1786 6 років тому +2

      @@silvermushroom-gamifyevery6430 I don't think there is an anti-pleasure or "stoic" implication within this video. It actually implies that you can get more pleasure out of life if you do practice delayed gratification (just think about the marshmallow test).
      So... no circle to square here I'd say.

    This is the 4th time actively listening to this. While Sam is on a hiatus, I’d like to throw into the oblivion that his content (and this video in particular) immensely developed my framing of life and the view I have of the world - understanding that life is:
    A. a sum of all cumulative decisions
    B. A perpetually present game of opportunity cost and future value across every seemingly trivial decision.
    If you ever feel like the world of chaos has chocked you for ransom, please make a scheduled time annually to watch this video as an ever-present reminder on the tactile method on how to live.

  • @kingofbirds07
    @kingofbirds07 6 років тому +14

    This video reminds me of something:
    When I was a teenager I liked the Pink Floyd song "Time." I thought that the 'starting gun' for life would be when I graduated high school, and hence that it was alright to waste time as a kid by playing video games and binge watching cartoons, because I'd be ready to get serious when the time came.
    Of course, the 'starting gun' isn't when you're 18 or graduate high school. It was when I was about 12 years old, and began to be capable of making decisions for myself. So even though I thought I understood the song, it turns out I was a victim of shortsightedness just like most people are early in life. The regret I feel for these largely wasted years is immense, but I do my best to use it as emotional leverage to do better from now on.
    Great content! Appreciate that you offer this stuff for free. Cheers

      @James Jones The funny thing is that the content he provides will get you all of those things if that's what you desire. Just from listening to him for a month my business literally went from £18-20K a month to £45K this month alone. His thinking, simplicity, long-term mindset and just the whole way he thinks when you apply it to your own life and business it makes everything much more simple. Entrepreneurs and business people are sold this idea that business must be a hassle and compact when the best of them take complex situations and break them down to make things simple. Sam has shown this, Elon does it, Jeff Bezos does it and this content is the best that I've come across thus far. They watch other content that will make their lives hell lol

    I've recently been very much of a short-term thinker. My task was to make a presentation with poster and some other stuff for the research I've been doing. However, even though I had 3 months time, I pushed it till today, which is two days before my presentation. Short-term decisions bring comfort to the now and can bring the greatest pain to the future. It is like if you don't ask out your love and think that you can marry and get love at any time, but many who think so may end up never finding the right one again, causing them to feel regret and suffering for having wasted all their opportunities

      @@stillperspective488, my partner, their father doesn't have my mindset. He believes TV is necessary for him to relax. I am unable to shield the kids from TV. How I wish they didn't watch. I hope to sell them the idea very soon, with more interesting replacements to get them busy and productive.

      To relax, doing nothing and meditating is the best thing. The learning dynamic of children is always something that fascinated me. You can give children so much on the way if you balance out the right things you teach them. I am glad I made so much mistakes in my life and my parents basically did what everybody else did. Now I can get my children on the right path.

    UA-cam videos are something I have recently realized have drastic 2nd order consequences that are very easy to miss. I don't think these videos have as much of that effect as I equate them to learning or reading, but I personally have had a habit of watching highlight videos of whatever I'm involved in.
    Whether it's chess, or a video game, or whatever someone might like doing, by watching those videos you're allowing yourself to get the joy of accomplishment while doing absolutely nothing to earn it. Even if it's something as unimportant as a game, it's still better to be the one improving on what you're doing than it is to just be another spectator accomplishing nothing.

      @KramerMcEleney Information from UA-cam videos doesn’t equate to learning in your opinion? It is quite addictive to consume such large amounts of information digitally that would rarely happen in the real world.

    Hey Sam thanks for the video, it’s pretty interesting and useful. It helps to look at things from a bit of different prospective than my usual one. One thing about the graphics in the end part. I find hard to evaluate choices in that way when they are not such simple matters and not so drastically opposite. I guess some choices sometimes are not so clearly in the “hill” area or in the “wheelchair” area, they feel in between these two. They could both be hard at first and then take me different good things, and it’s hard to predict where they would go. Well, interesting topic would be great to dig deeper into it.
    Thank you

    I remember vividly, resigning about a month ago and buying a Ps4 pro with 10 games. And by the first week I realized I must sell it to anyone because is paradoxica and stupid l to be home more with my family which is why I did it and buy something that would waste my time, take my attention and distract me from improving myself on a personal and mental level and spending the time with my family. You're totally right about this orders of consequences. new subscriber ❤

    2nd order consequence, being broken down in such simple terms, is something that should be taught to kids very early on in life. it's so simple to grasp. the TV, the junk food, we all love it in the short term but sometimes immediately (and of course long term) there's so much guilt associated with it

    What I liked most about this lesson was that you separated this concept into parts. Each part alone is fascinating while the sum of them together was more valuable than if you only explained the primary concept. You're right, I need to make decisions based on at least the 2nd order of consequences or 3rd order if I can recognize it. How far ahead have you been able to accurately project order of consequences? Was it 5? Or even 8?

    This is an *almost* correct perspective. But the correct perspective is trans perspectival. It embraces both sides. A meta analysis in psychology found that short term reward predicted long term persistence in goal achievement. So if you want to lose weight, the trick isn’t to try to use your willpower to avoid chocolates, because eventually you’ll succumb to your vice. The trick is to make your vice your friend. That is, you look at a lot of cooking recipes, you try a lot of healthy food and you figure out how to make a salad that tastes better than anything you can buy or eat within a 100 mile range. As soon as you’ve done that you’ll persist in your diet without any willpower or effort required because the most rewarding, addictive, and irresistible thing is the very thing that will make you lose weight or be healthy, both long term goals. So really, the truth is the yin and the yang together.
    The same applies to everything else of course: books that are irresistible to read, yet extremely enlightening. Workouts that are so fun they’re addictive, yet they achieve your desired physique.
    It is unwise to collapse on one perspective, and you make yourself another cliché in a very long history of people that have become a ‘type’. As the famous saying goes ‘all -isms end up in schisms’

      Thank you for this comment. While what he explains is generally true, it irks me how it's all coming off as "no fun allowed". Made me sad, when he said he enjoys burgers but must not eat them :/

    • @youssefa650
      @youssefa650 8 днів тому

      @@paulz.6162 There is certainly some partial wisdom to what he's saying, this idea of restraint. Restraint against our vices. The problem is restraint relies on willpower, which has a deadline.
      What he wants to protect against is going for the easy, shallow reward that may seem like it's rewarding but it's really unfulfilling, and saps us of a meaningful life. We can see this happen with social media taking over our minds, feeding us crap content nonstop. This is where I most empathize, resonate, and feel his perspective. I think the most virtuous interpretation of his perspective is that the deepest pleasures are found through a long, determined search. Not settling for what's next, or conveniently available.
      "You're given a choice in life. You can either paddle around in the shallow end of life, or you can swim in the deep end. You take your choice" - Marco Pierre White
      And that search often takes a very long time and resistance against the vices that seem like they are fulfilling but are really just the devil incarnate in some form. Paired with this, there is a saying that hunger is the best cook. There is certainly truth to that too.
      But it's one thing to say that, and another thing to feel it. And once it's felt, it is actually a thousand times more addicting than the crap.
      And there is a way to feel deeply *now*, and not just in the future. Instead of watching youtube, I can explore deeply inspiring art films. Films that sat in a filmmaker's mind for 20 years before they were crystallized and made. That's a very different order of depth than social media that feels like it rots my brain.
      Nature is about balance, and nuance. Nothing is black and white. And what is closer to nature? The one thing that is more resilient than willpower and discipline is addiction, because it plays to our nature. So wisdom does not shun addiction, it uses addiction to its advantage. The devil is the tempter, master controller. To use the devil's trick against him is the way out of this paradox. The path of least resistance to our most cherished goals.
      Short term desire Long term goals
      Whenever these 2 are decoupled, oscillation occurs. I say "I will only eat healthy food that tastes like shit to lose weight!" And in fact, I do lose weight. After 2 months however, that chocolate is looking real good. I say why not a little bit? Oh well since I've tried some, why not some more? 2 months later I look in the mirror and I'm disgusted by how I've gotten fatter than I was before I started the diet. And so I move back and forth, from what I want now, to what I want in the future. The cycle repeats.
      Oscillation is inefficiency. It gives us a profound clue as to the underlying issue. What you most want now should serve what you most want in the future and vice versa. That's when time becomes our ally.
