Woodturning - The Untold Story of Cedar

  • For this week’s project I recently picked up this large piece of cedar. There were some bark inclusions in the log which forced me to cut this little section out. I’ll turn a couple of smaller bowls from it.
    Harry apparently had a traumatic event in his past involving cedar wood. Tune in to hear his story.
    I’ll be giving one of these pieces to the gentlemen who I got the wood from. It’s finished with Mahoney’s Walnut Oil.
    Thank you all for watching! I’ve got some other exiting news which I’ve yet to announce in a video but I’ve created a website. Please go and check it out if you’re interested in purchasing any turnings which I’ve created!

    Such a harrowing tale. Poor Harry. Beavers should be admired and venerated, not shut away where nobody can see them. If I were into social media, I'd probably add something like #FreeTheBeaver (nice bowl, Robert)

    Nice bowl . I always have to wear power respirator for turning cedar , wear gloves when applying finishes , and lay a wooden tray or sheet of newspaper on bed when applying finishes . Have you ever used a wedge and sledge to split out turning blanks ?

    Nice bowl, Robert. It's strange how the grain makes the bowl look oblong. We always knew Harry needed counselling, now we know one of the reasons. But only one. Take care.

    Like the live edge. When you first chucked up the block is that risky❓should you always wear a mask when turning cedar❓

    • @HodgePodgeWoodWorks
      @HodgePodgeWoodWorks  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Jim, I usually start most of my turnings between centers and have never had one come off. This cedar was pretty wet so there wasn't much dust. Some people may have allergies to cedar so a mask could be a good idea.

    I would like to touch this bowl, and study it well! I tend to have a bit of trouble hollowing deeper bowls. What tool did you use?

    • @HodgePodgeWoodWorks
      @HodgePodgeWoodWorks  2 роки тому

      For the most part I used a 5/8in bowl gouge and when I got to the bottom I used a 3/4in bottom bowl gouge. Once you get the hang of the bottom bowl gouge it works great!

    I love the smell and the look of cedar. However, some of the pieces I have worked with have a tendency to blow up.

      With cedar being so soft I could see that being a common occurrence if you get a catch!

    Red cedar turns easily, leaves a remarkable finish and is beautiful. But, in my limited experience, it fades to brown. Have you found a way to keep the color from fading?

    First time viewer and it threw me off as to why you flip the bowl around so many times. Seems you're adding a bunch of steps and creating two tenons when really you only need one. When I make a bowl I only flip it twice and done. I mount it either between centers, worm screw or faceplate, make the tenon or mortise and carve the outside. Flip it and mount in chuck and carve out the inside then flip and get rid of tenon. All sanding and finish is done before flipping.

    • @HodgePodgeWoodWorks
      @HodgePodgeWoodWorks  2 роки тому

      Welcome and thanks for watching! I only started doing this two tenon/mortise technique a few months ago after taking a class with Stuart Batty. The reason for doing the first tenon or mortise on what will be the top of the bowl is that it will then allow you full access to the bottom to do a pushcut from the bottom all the way to the rim. The tailstock would typically be in the way if you were between centers. You could use a faceplate but I feel that takes longer than just making a 2nd chucking point.
