    Great piece. Love walnut anyway, but the ant damage give it SO much character. I am very surprised at how much the wood moved after turning. It looked to be very dry when turning. No matter really. You did a great job with it. Be careful with that grocery store walnut oil. People with walnut allergies can react to it. Mahoney’s and Dr’s walnut oil have both been heated and filtered to remove the proteins that cause reaction.
    Again, great work. Love the size, the wood, the ant damage, everything! Thanks for sharing.

      @andrewmccarn  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you Doug! Yeah walnut is hard to beat just as it normally is but I think the bug holes definitely enhanced it. Thank you for the info as well! One thing I always make sure to do is when I sell something like this, I always give a warning that walnut oil was used just so whoever is purchasing it knows ahead of time. Id rather be safe than sorry but luckily from what I have read it seems very rare for someone to have a reaction to the walnut oil when used. Even still, this is part of the reason I don't use it that often and just stick to my other oils lol

    So good Andrew! Love your style and your attention to details.
    What chainsaw are you using? I have to make the plunge to a bigger bar ( using an electric now and it won't get through the bigger stuff without butchering it )

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  8 місяців тому +1

      I appreciate that! I am using the stihl 462c with the Granberg 30" bar and ripping chain. Its been a FANTASTIC setup and does everything I need. One thing I love about this saw is its really light if you use the standard bar but also powerful enough to do some light milling as well. In my chainsaw milling videos, this is the same saw and setup that I use for that as well. If all youre wanting is bowl prep then I would go as far to say you probably wouldnt need anything more than this. I also used a 271 for years and it did a great job as well.

    Of all the videos I have seen on UA-cam, this is the only one I have seen where the bug runs are left remaining in the turning. I've always tried to leave those things when I turn wood since they only add character and beauty to the turning. I like this turning!!! Nice!!!!!!!

    I really love this one Andrew! I have always wanted to try some buggy wood but was worried it "wood" just blow up. Pun intended. I was wondering if you tried this with grub wood? As in infested with grubs? I have had some guys say you have to fumigate the wood. Or take it to 130° for a couple hours? I haven't tried it yet but I have some yellow poplar that is buggy. I think it might be too soft to try to turn like this. Any suggestions? Tips?
    I was also wondering what do we have to do to get you to make more videos?!! Lol!! I look forward to the notification that you have a new posting. I dont do any other social media. So if you are doing stuff on another platform I wouldn't know. Either way. I love this piece!! Beautiful! Thank you for taking the time to share your art with us!

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  8 місяців тому

      First off I really do appreciate this comment! Thank you very much! For the grub wood, I have in the past and from I know, if you are not 100% certain the bugs are out then you do need to typically heat it up - thats the solution I know. I dont know about the fumigating BUT that could make for an interesting experiment. I know the last time I did turn some, even after turning the walls pretty thin and letting it sit for months, there were still some bugs alive in it. At the time I wasn't sure how to get rid of them so it was just thrown in the fire pit. I know ash and persimmon can be bad about this. Thats the two i have had the worst experiences with. For the poplar, usually my rule of thumb is if I can press in the wood, like its spongey, then I wont mess with it UNLESS I can tell its only a spot and it can be turned away. My suggestion is to go for it and if you have issues with it in the beginning then decide from there. Some bowls I thought I could turn away the bugginess, I would turn the outside and if I felt it wasn't salvageable then Id just take my loss on the wood. I hope that helps! Also one of my goals this year is to eventually get to posting every week with a consistent schedule! I do the other social media stuff but those post are just the shortened videos of these videos with a few exceptions. But thank you again for the comment and if you have any other questions, please let me know!!

      @joeehrlich2898 8 місяців тому

      @@andrewmccarn your a godd man Andrew and I appreciate you! Thanks for the advice. I know poplar is not that hard of a wood anyway. But I'll go for it. I also have some lightning strike pine that a client wants a park type bench made out of. Its loaded with bugs and they want resin filling holes. I have the wood in the kiln but I dont think I can achieve 130° to kill the bugs. I am thinking about big bags and a fumigation bomb. I am very concerned about food and such on this type of build. I'll see how it looks when I dry it out. Thank you again Andrew. It's nice to have some networking guys to bounce questions off of. Have a fantastic day!

    Hi 👋 I am new to your channel, A Great Looking 👀 Peace ☮️ Of Art , That wood 🪵 Bug 🐜 Me with a ll those Holes 🕳️ in It ,😂, Joke,
    I have pieces of walnut, and I think some ash, with similar holes in it, I’m hoping to turn it either later this year or next year,
    I did have to fell a tree about three or four years ago as it was starting to lean towards my neighbours property , I put a large electric winch round it which was fine, I was hoping to use some of it to make other some bits of furniture or do some woodburning with it, but I was very surprised when it came over and hit the ground it disintegrated, more firewood and rot than I participated,
    Keep up the great work , look forward to seeing some more of your Woodturning, from France,

      @andrewmccarn  8 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! I have turned some buggy ash as well and it also makes for some beautiful bowls! The thing with buggy wood like this or ash or really any is there is a certain time frame for when you do have to work with it or else it will just disintegrate like you said! I have definitely had that happen to me as well

    I love when a piece like this isn't cast in epoxy. I've done some in epoxy but the majority I've turned are like this one, but not as beautiful. The ant holes give the effect of wooden lace. It looks amazing! Great work and thank you for sharing with us.

      I appreciate the very kind compliment! I agree with you, I don't do much with epoxy but when it comes to wood like this, Id much rather see if it can be turned the way it naturally looks.

    Hi Andrew, great videos. It seems we have similar tastes in preserving the ‘rustic’ character of the wood…ant holes, internal knots, even minor rot all provide character to the piece….in my opinion. I have a 18/36 Laguna but haven’t done any outboard turning with it. You have really stretched your 18/36 with your big bowls. I’m deciding whether I should upgrade my lathe to a 24/36 or add an extension for bigger bowls and platters. Any thoughts…can the 18/38 handle the big stuff comfortably?
    Up here in Ontario I have access to a lot of root balls, spaulted blocks and big burls….I’m definitely going into bigger pieces and don’t want to kill my 18/36. Thanks in advance for your opinions and I’ll keep watching.

    Andrew I have a couple big chunks of black cherry that are ant-damaged like that. Being the rookie that I still am I'm a little concerned about how delicate the finished product might be. So I have two questions for you. If I were to finish a bowl like that with a layer of thin CA would that do anything to shore up the damaged parts; and would that ruin the look of the wood? -- And man, that's a beautiful bowl you turned there. -- And I want to tell you I saw another bowl of yours where you put a three-point foot on it. Man, that is smart. No matter how it warps it will always sit well. No rocking. Thanks a lot for the lesson.

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  7 місяців тому

      So when I work with wood like this, one thing I always do is exactly what you said! I always coat it in thin CA glue to give it a little strength but I also use it as a sealer for all the little cracks and holes. One tip though is I dont recommend using CA accelerator if you do because in the past I have done that and I get the whitening effect that can sometimes happen with CA glue and accelerator and it is a pain trying to sand all that away lol And the tripod feet are one of my favorite little details to add to a bowl! A ton of fun to carve and like you said, no matter the movement, it was always sit flat!
