How to Crochet a Cardigan for a Stuffed Animal | Beginner Friendly

- In this video I give a tutorial on how to crochet a cardigan for a stuffed animal! My crochet sweater video is the most viewed video on my channel so I thought I’d also do a cardigan with a different method. I tried to make this tutorial a lot more detailed and slower than my sweater video so this should be doable for everyone regardless of crochet experience! Also make sure to follow my tips along the way or read the written pattern first to avoid some of the mistakes I made 😆
Adapted from this tutorial: • *EASY* Crochet Cardiga...
Written Pattern:
Abbreviations: Ch - chain, HDC - half double crochet, DC - double crochet, SC - single crochet, SS - slip stitch
BACK PANEL:
Measure around stuffed animal’s chest and add 4 cm. (x)
Make a slip knot and crochet a chain until it is a length of x divided by two (x/2) stretch the chain a bit while measuring because after adding the HDC’s it will get longer
Ch 1 and do a half double crochet into the previous chain. HDC until end of chain. Ch 1 and turn. Do a HDC into each stitch until end of the row.
Repeat this process until desired length is reached (measured from stuffed animal’s neck to bottom edge of cardigan) make sure to leave it a little longer than you think
Ch 1 and cut, pull yarn through and pull tight (fasten off)
FRONT PANELS:
Measure straight across stuffed animal’s neck. Subtract that measurement from final measurement of back panel and divide by 2. This is going to be the length of each front panel.
Chain until it is the length calculated above (make sure to stretch it while measuring). HDC into each chain, doing the same process as back panel. Do the same number of rows so the lengths are the same.
Fasten off, leaving a very long tail (at least 30 cm)
SEAMING SHOULDERS + SIDES
Flip front and back panels good side to good side lined up along their shorter sides. Use tail of front panel as working yarn and slip stitch through edges of both panels along entire edge until fully connected. Fasten off.
Try onto stuffed animal to see how far up the sides should be connected. Make sure to leave plenty of room for the arm hole. Count around how many rows up from the bottom you want to connect. Turn inside out and attach new yarn or use a tail to connect sides that same way as the shoulders.
SLEEVES:
Slip knot, insert at bottom of arm hole and pull through. Ch 1, HDC in each spot around the arm hole including where you first inserted the slip knot once you have gone all the way around. SS into the first chain to join.
Ch 1 and turn, HDC into each stitch. Repeat above process until sleeve is desired length.
INNER RIBBING: (for if there is a large gap in the front)
Try cardigan on stuffed animal and add a stitch marker to where you want the inner ribbing to taper off.
Insert a slip knot at the bottom row of the inner edge. DC into each stitch until you are three stitches away from the stitch marker. In first stitch do a HDC, in second stitch do a SC, and in third stitch do a SS. Remove stitch marker and do one more SS into the next one.
Ch 1 and turn. Into next stitch do a SC, next do a HDC, next do a DC into each remaining stitch. This can be repeated to make the inner ribbing wider. Fasten off.
BOTTOM RIBBING: (can be added if cardigan is too short)
Insert slip stitch in bottom row of inner ribbing. DC into each stitch around base of cardigan until you reach the other side. Can ch 1 and go back the other way more times for added length. Fasten off.
Weave in your ends and you’re done!

This is adorable! I’ve always wanted to learn to crochet but I feel like I already have SO many creative hobbies that I already don’t have time for. This video was inspiring I think I might invest in some yarn and give this a go. Unfortunately my favorite stuffed animals to make clothes for are beanie boos and it seems like creating a pattern for friends that small would be difficult. I made Cassidy a swimsuit out of fabric and that was challenging because of their proportions
Yeah this might be difficult for beanie boos…but I’ve seen people crochet clothes for squishmallows so anything is possible 🤣 so maybe in the future I’ll do a video like that and see what I can make
@@LixiePigCrafts that’s a good point! I’m sure there are ways it may just be tricky. I’m definitely going to do the scarf for them from your no sew winter accessories video!
Oh yeah that’s a great one to do!
This has to be my favorite plushie channel. I make stuff from your tutorials ALL THE TIME for my build a bear frog! This video though was my very first crochet project that I successfully finished!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!
That’s so sweet 😭 Oooh yay glad it worked out!
Oh my god wait I found you yesterday and I thought you didn’t post anymore! I’m glad to know that your stuffed friends are growing up with you, makes me feel better about the fact that I still keep mine around as what would be a highschool senior. Love from Spain!
My newest video is taking a bit longer but yes I’m still posting! Nothing wrong with loving plushies at any age ☺️
Thank you so much! This is so cute! One day, when I get some materials for crocheting (and everything else) I will make so many things off of your channel! You are amazing!
Thanks Mia! Yeah hopefully one day you do! 🥰😘
@@LixiePigCrafts 😍
OMG I have that pink bunny stuffed animal my grandpa and grandma gave it to me when I was little it’s so special to me cause my grandpa passed❤️
Awww that’s sweet 🥺
Thanks for always coming up with amazing video ideas❤. I’m about to crochet this cardigan!!!! Looks so 🥰 cute.
Yay let me know how it goes!!! 🥰
Thanks so much it turned out perfect! Your video was so easy to follow along with. ❤
I agree
That’s a relief 🤣
Woah this is amazing!!
The maths is the only thing that confused me so much because my brain decided to measure in inches then convert to centimetres, then add 4cm then convert back to inches, when i could have measured in cm from the start 🥲 im a bit weird buttttt i really loved how it turned out!! Thankyou so much ❤
This is so cute
Thank you! 😊
I am afull at croche but some how i maneged to make this cárdigan so thank you!!!!
Ooohh yay I’m glad you were able to make it 🤩
Can you please make one that has the exact measurements that you’re using because i’m crocheting it for the same bear
You bunny is so cutee
Hi lixie! i love all of your videos! maybe for christmas you could do mini christmas themed stuffed animals for your stuffed animals? like maybe a christmas tree or a gingerbread man or house! just some suggestions!
Thank you! I like your profile pic ☺️ so you want me to make like smaller stuffed toys?
@@LixiePigCrafts thanks and yeah- like the diy teddy bear for a stuffed animal? But Christmas ones like Christmas tree and gingerbread man like I sajd
Ok I get what you mean
@@LixiePigCrafts tyyy!!
I am making a gift for my fried and this would be great. But I have never done crochet before and I'm wondering how long this would take to make
Hmmm this is doable in one day but for a beginner it might be good to work on it an hour or two a day for a few days
Thank you for this tutorial! I was just wondering how much chains you did at the beginning xx
After rewatching the beginning I’m not exactly sure since I ended up just measuring the chain but zooming in on the video and counting I got around 44? 🤔😅
Hi Sam! It feels weird to call you Sam in pt 2 of the stuffed animal car video the number plate said Sam but anyways. I think this is really REALLY cute I love it! I wish that I can crochet. I've tried but the only thing I do is make knots lol😅 also I have a video idea. Since it's almost christmas can you make a christmas outfit like a dress or some winter clothes and a christmas room for a stuffed animal. This video was amazing as always lysm❤❤❤❤❤❤
Haha yeah you can call me whatever 🤣 great suggestions! I definitely have some of those planned already…
@@LixiePigCrafts I have a question. Why did you name your yt channel Lixie Pig Crafts when your names Sam?
The name “lixie” comes from a combination of my guinea pigs’ names. I had the Lixie pig Instagram for a few years first and couldn’t come up with any better names for the UA-cam channel 😅 but great question! I was going to try to incorporate my real name into the channel first though
Ooh i have one of those i think my grandma made them mine is like white with pastel color for my teddy bear i miss my grandma mine have buttons
Aww that sounds so cute ☺️ at least you have that as a memory of her
Cuteeee
Thanksss 🥰
5:38 just needed to save my place lol
Can you do instruments? Guitar, drums, ukulele, flute. And more, thank you! Keep the hard work up
You should do a mini fridge and some skin care in it
That sounds kind of tough but super cute 😅 what kind of skin care stuff?
I have the exact same pink Daisy bunny!!!
Wow twinsies! What’s yours named?
😊👍
What discription box?.
I just started crocheting at the end of 2022 and I keep trying this and I keep failing but I will not give up trying to make this 😂
That’s the spirit!! 👊🏼
I love your videos. Can you sports supply. Like basketball hoop. Because my stuffed animals really wanna play basketball. Also you can make hockey stick. Puck. Soccer net. And others you can make as many parts to this videos just please. Thank you!
Oh yeah thanks for reminding me!
Hi I really love all you tutorial now my build a bear has makeup 💄.
And I really think you should make a Camara 📷.
Aww yay! A camera is a great suggestion 😊
is it just mines that's messed up?
What is the size of your crochet hook?
3.75 millimeters
Is there away to make it with only chains the others are too hard😢
unfortunately you have to build on the chains to bulk it up but it just takes a lot of practice!
Hi i find youre videos so helpfull thank you! Maybee you can make mini fidjets for stufed animals i know i would love to see that
Hmmm that might be tough what kinds of fidgets?
I guess diy fidgets but smaller and maybee things like stressballs or other stuff like fidgets that are originaly small but a diy version.
Oh ok I know my cousin has a lot of them so I could ask her for some ideas
Ok thanks it means a lot to me since i love fidgets so much and i have a bunch!😍
Mine can only go to about 10 mins
This video is very helpful. Can you make hunter from the owl house pleas :3 💛💚
Hmm I’m not familiar with that character 🤔 what do you mean by make him
It's confusing as if it doesn't measure up
I wish this was knitting.. I only know how to knit
Aww too bad I only know how to crochet 🥲
@@LixiePigCrafts oh ok, that’s ok
How do you make your videos so long
This one went way longer than I thought because it’s a crochet one where I talked in real time 😅 not all videos have to be long though; it’s best to keep the information concise but I tend to talk a lot lol
