How to Crochet a Sweater for a Stuffed Animal
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 вер 2021
- In this video I give a tutorial on how to crochet a sweater for a stuffed animal. This project is just in time for fall and is great for beginner crocheters (I’m actually a beginner too!) I adapted this pattern to fit a Build A Bear from an adult sized sweater pattern from For the Frills (website linked down below).
Edit: I made a mistake in my voice-over at 5:20 when I say to do a DC for the next 13 stitches; I forgot to include one more set of 6 stitches before that so it should go 6, 6, 13, 6, 6
My channel is dedicated to making stuffed animal clothes (aka teddy clothes or Build A Bear clothes) and other crafts. If you want to learn how to make your own clothing for stuffed animals, much cheaper than buying them from stores, make sure to subscribe! I make all my own patterns and have printable versions linked below that anyone can use for free!

I tried crocheting for the first time and this is the first thing I made. Thank you so much for the tutorial. The result is so darn cute
Wow I'm so happy you made it! I'm glad my tutorial was clear enough for new crocheters :)
This is an amazing tutorial! Successfully made a sweater for my childhood stuffed animal. I’m bad with instructions so I had to go a bit rogue and feel it out for myself at points, but using this as a guideline was essential since this is my first ever crochet project. Thanks for the video!
Wow I’m so glad you tried it and it worked out! I made some mistakes in the video so I’m glad you were able to figure it out 😅
this is my favorite sweater video! i made two sweaters for me and my friend's matching bears, and now im making a sweater for a frog! thank you!
Wow that’s amazing! That’s so sweet you made matching ones 🥺
I find it incredible that you are a beginner yet were able to not only crochet this sweater but also were able to adapt an actual adult pattern to work with the bear. That's amazing! 😎
I modified your pattern to create matching Christmas sweaters for 2 stuffed animal mooses for my daughter's roommate. I customized them by adding red, embroidered snowflakes in the middle of them. I'm glad you posted this tutorial because I had no idea how to do this. I'm used to making hats, headbands, and scarves. Lol

Thanks so much for writing this out!
Ty
You are a saint thank you
I am a beginner at crocheting as well and just made this using your tutorial. The stuffy I was making the sweater for was probably a third of the size of a build a bear so I just reduced the stitch count but tried to be sure it would still work out evenly at the end for the increases. Excellent job explaining everything!
I’m so glad you found it helpful as a beginner! ☺️
I'm making one for a much smaller stuffed animal and I ended up picking a thinner/light weight yarn with a smaller hook and that worked well!
thanks for the fantastic tutorial!! :) love my sweater for my build a bear spring frog!!
(if anyone else wants to make a sweater for a frog but is having trouble since the head is bigger than other build a bears', try adding 2 chains to that initial round - - so 44 chains total! after quite a bit of trial and error, that number worked for me.)
I’m so happy it worked for you 😄 thanks so much for the tips on build a bear frogs! I don’t have one but know they’re super popular!
I also want to make one for my frog what crochet hook size do you recommend along with yarn thickness I was thinking a yellow sweater with semi thick yarn but wasn’t sure about size and brand
i have the mini frog im tryna make this for him
tysm! i made this sweater using 44 chains and it worked !
thanks love you but i messed up my 3hrs work🎉😂@@LixiePigCrafts
Just made a super cute sweater for my Garfield plush using this video as inspiration. Thank you! Excited to make him a different sweater for each holiday/season.
Ooh glad I could help! A sweater for each season is such a good idea 🤩
IM LITERALLY ABOUT TO MAKE ONE FOR MY GARFIELD PLUSH!!!
THANK YOU I JUST MADE A PINK ONE FOR MY BUNNY AND ITS ADORABLE, AMAZING TUTORIAL♡♡♡
Thank you so much, glad it worked out!! 😄🥰
Omg the handprints in the rug. That looks oike the comfiest rug ever
thank you so much! i had to asjust it a little bit because i think my yarn is a bit more chunky than yours but this was very easy to follow along with i love it :D
Thank you so much gonna crochet it for my little dog stuffed animal for Christmas ❤❤
Adorable…great directions and video! Thank you!
Ik this is years old but I just made one for my childhood stuffed animal and it’s so cute 😭
I ended up adding some ribbing to the bottom and slip stitched around the collar (bc my collar was really wonky lol), but even without the extra touches, this is such a good pattern and tutorial! Builds up quickly too.
Aw wow this is so amazing to hear! 🥹
this is my first time trying crochet. this tutorial is so easy to follow and helped a lot! thank you so much
I’m so happy to hear that! There were some mistakes I had to correct with the pattern so I’m glad you could still follow 😅
did you use chunky wool ? or normal wool?
tysm this is such a good tutorial ❤ I made this for a smaller plush an just chopped the stitch count in half🤠🤠
This was my first ever crochet project, thanks to you I was able to do it! 🥰🤩
Yayy congrats!! 🥳
I just finished I added more rows to the bottom just because the bear I crouched is longer but it looks great thank you !
Tysm for this tutorial! I can’t wait to actually try it,I’ll edit when I do! BTW I SUBBED:D
Thank you so much for subscribing and yes let me know how it goes! Make sure to read the notes in the description box because I made some mistakes while filming
Thanks so much for the great tutorial!
Tja k you for this tutorial, it was super easy to understand 💖
Your welcome! I’m glad it was understandable because there were moments where I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing 😅
Very useful video!
Thank you for the video 😊 it was super easy to follow !!!
That’s so great to hear! This one was a little fast so I’m glad it was easy to follow ☺️
I’m so excited to try this for Bilby!!
Yay! Is Bilby in your profile picture or is that Ash?
@@LixiePigCrafts that is Bilby in my profile pic! The human is Ash haha:)
Amazing skills
Hey dear saw this accident ally am glad I did I been wranting to make sweater a long time now I can it's very simple am not a beginner though
Thank you so much for accepting my request
Of course! Great suggestion!
This is super cute!! Just about to finish up the second sleeve, love it. Do you happen to have any crochet pants/shorts patterns? Awesome work!
Glad it’s working out for you! I unfortunately only have a beanie pattern/video but maybe I’ll do more crochet stuff in the future!
So can i use this same pattern and same stiches for a bigger sweater it is .. thats ooo easy to make person size sweter lol
hi!!!
how do i make sure im slip stiching in the right stitch cuz mines a mess
I cant wait to try this, I have so many stuffed animal babies that need clothes and sewing is not for me.
Yay! I have a few videos on no sew clothes but crochet pieces usually look more professional and neat 😊
Hi! I absolutely love this!! I really want to try making it. But my stuffed bunny is much much smaller than your bear. And I’m very much beginner. I don’t know any of the terms you are using. I only know how to crochet a square. I really want to try this!! Any idea how to adapt it? I think I can definitely do it if I know how many stitches I need in between the safety pins :)
I’m pretty sure in the video I say how to adapt it but I don’t give any specific stitch counts - it’s all based on comparing it to your stuffed animal. If you still need help I might be able to give you a general idea of the stitch counts if you want to tell me your bunny’s measurements 😊 I’m not the best at showing how to do each stitch so any term I use you could just search on UA-cam for a more in depth description!
What wool/yarn are you using? All of mine are either too thin or too thick
So good 2000/10 pls can u show and make a picnic stuff and if your able to, a table that would mean so much to me
Oohh that’s a cool idea!
Ok, so I made this sweater originally almost a year ago and it turned out perfect, but now I'm making another one and in the third row I have a single stitch leftover? If the initial 42 chains is correct and I'm still supposed to have 42 stitches in the third row, then why do I still have one leftover? Am I doing my math wrong here 😭 idk if only did 41 the last time in order to get the third row to make sense or not, please help.
Awesome 👍🏾 thank you ❤
Glad it helped! 🥰
omg that’s the exact stuffed animal i wanted to crochet for😭😭
Wow 🤩 yeah a lot of people seem to have this bunny!
Looking to make a sweater for my own Pawlette! Thanks
I hope it works out 🤞 don’t give up!
@@LixiePigCrafts Same but I'm looking forward to making a little sweater for a 6 inches baby dolls because I really wanted to learn how to make easy 6 inches baby doll if you can please help thanks you an I love your video I just started watching you an I love your videos🥰🥰
im super confused because i keep redoing the first part where you connect the chain together and build the second row & somehow it keeps turning out twisted :,( any advice on what im doing wrong/how to fix it?
Hmm I’m not an expert so I’m not exactly sure what you’re doing wrong but I found some other crochet videos that might help: ua-cam.com/video/fnAKsXMqaCc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/CE1aN3NjLdY/v-deo.html let me know if this helps!
Is this worked in multiples of 2's to size or is it just chain until it can wrap around stuffy head?
The initial way to size it is just with a regular chain until it can fit over the head ☺️
Yay your growing subscribers
Thankyou so much
I made a halter top for my bunny it’s so cute
Oooh was it crochet or fabric?
Please do a hoodie for stuffed animals
Hey! I am disha and I'm from India 💓❤️🎉 I love your videos ...
They help me soo much for my suffed toys
Hi Disha! I’m so glad they help 🥰💕
@@LixiePigCrafts aww 🥰 thanku so much ♡
hihi , how do you visualise / plan how to like scale your crochet project bigger or smaller ? 0w0
With this one specifically, it’s all about how long that initial chain is. Then you can adjust how many rounds to do to make it bigger or smaller. I don’t crochet many things though so I’m not an expert and don’t really know how I would do it for other projects 😆
Thanks for the tutorial but why do you need to flip the whole thing around? I don’t understand that part.
Hey, small question, what if the stitch markers end up forming a bit more like an obtuse trapezoid than a rectangle at the end of round 3? Do i redo the round? For reference I had to do about 62 chains for the first step
Hmmm I think I get what you mean -- with how it is currently the front will end up a different width as the back so it may not fit properly. I'd redo the round and space the 3 double crochets/where the stitch markers will go differently so it forms more of a square or rectangle shape!
Just subscribed!!
Thank you 🥳🥰
Hi I got lost around 6:25 . In the beginning of the round we dc 6 then do 3dc in one st and then after that do the 1dc in each st for 13st? I don’t quiet understand how that’s right bc when I did that my stitch markers did not look rectangle shaped
Hi -- sorry about that, I made a mistake in the voice-over of the video. Check the description for a note on that and you can also follow the pattern there for the correct instructions. Let me know if you are still confused!
Can crochet a sweater for four legged stuffed animals too🎉
How much yarn did you use??
OMG TYSM! I’m tryna learn to crochet, also well don’t on 8k!
Thank you so much for all the encouragement ☺️
@@LixiePigCrafts Ofc! You make such good vids!
I don't have any stuffed animal I would like to make for a.chilx of an adult how do I determine how many chains to begin with and how do I determine how many chains to leave after I do the double crochet cluster does it always have to b thirtden
I actually adapted this from a full sized sweater so here’s the original tutorial! I also linked her video in the description

ROUND THREE INSTRUCTIONS:: (because i had way too much trouble with this)
ch 3, DC 6, 3DC cluster, DC 6, 3DC cluster, DC 13, 3DC cluster, DC 6, 3DC cluster.
PATTERN IS 6, 6, 13, 6
NOT 6, 13, 66
Thanks for catching that, I just realized my voice over was wrong and I wrote the pattern based on that 🤦🏻♀️ I’ll correct that in the pattern part!
It should be 6, 6, 13, 6, 6
I think 6, 6, 13, 6 does work better. I'm still testing it out, but I've been having a problem with the back of my sweater being WAY too big, as if I had added extra stitches each round, and I think it's because I thought I had to do 3DC into that last (5th) safety pin every round (as in 6, 6, 13, 6, 6). It looks like it's turning out better when I just have the 4 safety pins, like in the video, and therefore only do 4 3DCs. Just thought I'd leave this comment here in case anyone else is having this problem!
THANK YOU I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IVE BEEN DOING WRONG FOR DAYS
Ahaha I've tried to make this sweater a good 3 or 4 times and I still can't get it right 😭 I always end up missing 1 or 2 of the double crochets with the safety pins. I'll keep trying though!
Don’t worry it take a lot of practice! The good thing is you’re still trying 😁 also even if you make little mistakes it still might work out in the end - even mine wasn’t perfect!
I got lost somewhere after 13 stitches of double crochets... I had no more room on the row and she said "now do ___ for 6 more stitches" and i 🙃🫠 i dunno 😭😂😂 where do i have space for 6 more 😭
@@RyeRyeBreadOMG IT HAPPENED THE SAME TO ME RN, do you know how to do that??
hi!! how many sticthes are after the first 42 single crochets? i counted mine and the front and back double crochet stitches are 25 and it seems smaller. what do I do?
Since those front and back post double crochets go into each stitch there should be a total of 42 stitches still. Maybe you skipped over some stitches when doing the double crochets? In that case you'll probably want to pull that round out and start the round over making sure to not skip any stitches when doing the front/back post double crochets. Hope this helps!
Hi! I don't know if you are still working on this sweater, but I figured I'd reply just in case you or anyone else needed help because I had the exact same problem as you.
When you go into the stitches you into the one and then the second, but on the next post stitch you go back into the second stitch of the last post stitch and then the next available stitch.
So if stitches A and B make up the front post double crochet, then stitches B and C would make up the back post double crochet, C and D would make the front post double crochet, D and E for the back post double crochet, and so on until the end. I had 41 stitches at the end. So I just did one last back post double crochet in the post around the chain of 3 from the beginning to make up the 42nd. I hope this helps!
do you think it’s possible to convert this pattern into a cardigan?
I can't give too many details but I think it can! If you don't join the chain into a circle that would leave the front (technically the back) open and from there I think you could just continue the pattern like that
Do you know about how long it took for you to crochet this? I wanna start it but it would be helpful to know how long the project would take
I definitely finished it in one day - it took maybe 4-5 hours
Please clarify directions as they dont quit make sense to me (6 stitches before that so it should go 6, 6, 13, 6, 6)
Yes that sounds correct
I started crying on the third round of stitches
Aw I’m sorry this is a pretty tough pattern lol
how does one modify is you use a size/weight 4 yarn?? help 😅
Since your yarn is thinner you'll probably just have to do more stitches for the starting chain and an extra round or two for the body and sleeves. You should be able to tell by trying it on your stuffed animal -- does that help?
I which my mom could help me make it but I moved house so my mom can't help me because she is too busy to help me and she can't because all the things I need to make it is in a box so I sadly can't make it right now but I think it's beautiful love you so very very much Lixie💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
No worries if you can’t make it right now! Thanks for all the kind comments! 🥰
I know but I really want to make it and it's my pleasure I just do what I love which is making kind comments😊😊💕💕💕
my safety-pins dont make a rectangle amd the sides arent equal! does this matter for the end result?
If they’re a little uneven it should still be ok! If the opposite sides are really uneven you may have put the 3 double crochets in the wrong spots
@@LixiePigCraftsthis confused me too - the tutorial says to crochet 6 then increase, 13 then an increase, 6 then an increase and 6 then an increase and just complete with double crochets. It didn't make a rectangle. Is it not 6 then 13 then 6 then 13?
I swear it looks really difficult but its really not until you get it...obv need to have patience and few practice...thank youuu
Glad you got it! I know it’s kinda complicated and I go pretty fast but hopefully it is clear enough ❤️
Can I do this with thinner yarn?
yes!
If I increase the head stitch count by 2 then what would I do to the rest of the pattern?
Sorry I'm new to crochet so I don't know alot yet.
Hmmm you mean increasing the chain stitch by 2? That shouldn’t make too much of a difference so I’d say just do the same thing as me and if there’s extra stitches at the end of the round just continue doing the ones you were doing to finish the round
@@LixiePigCrafts Thanks!
This is a great tutorial for learning to do sweaters for plushies!
Only one thing, you do talk quite fast and it would be great if it was slower, I had to go back lots of times.
Other than that, perfect tutorial! Thank you!!
Thank you! Yes I agree I talked way too fast but I tried to go slower in my other crochet videos! 😅
I’m confused on round 3, the pattern in the description doesn’t match what you say in the video? And I run out of room if I try to do what is in the description
Yeah sorry about that, I said the wrong thing in the voiceover! The pattern should be correct but if you’re running out of room maybe your initial chain was too short or you can try making each section shorter to fit them all. It’s probably fine if it’s not all even, as long as it has a similar shape and fits your stuffed animal
can you do turtleneck?
I did a no sew one in this video: ua-cam.com/video/quCc0wMooFc/v-deo.html but I should definitely do a more advanced one too!
Do you have any tips? I had to resize it for my bear so instead of 42 chains I had to do 55! My jumper isn’t looking the same as yours! Help!
What step are you on and what does it currently look like? I’ll try to help the best that I can
@@LixiePigCrafts I’m on round 3, I think I fixed it by doing ch 3, 7, 3, 7, 3, 15, 3, 7, 3, 7 as that adds up to 55! Hopefully it will work!
@@Melanies_crochet_creations_ That sounds right! Hopefully I mentioned in the video that it should add up to that initial number of chains. I'm glad you were able to figure it out!
Can’t you make a jumper for that teddy bear please I would be very grateful
Could you describe what kind of jumper you mean? To me a jumper is like a shirt and pants combo but it might mean something else to other people 😅
I do nt understand turn it around and crochet in the opposite direction.
do you think it would work if instead of doing 42 chains, i do 36? as far as I've seen, this tutorial kinda works with multiples of six?
or maybe with 35? i really wanna make it smaller but idk how D:
Hmmm I haven’t done the math but as long as you follow a similar spacing of the increases as I did it should be ok. Being off by a stitch or two shouldn’t make a difference - it’s all about how wide you want the sleeves to be. Hope this helps! Idk if that made sense at all 😅
I wish this was a lot easier to understand for a real beginner, this is more like advanced beginner or intermediate. I would have loved to make this for my stuffed animals but I got lost right at the beginning of row two, (front post double crochet) because I don’t understand what you mean by inserting in the front or bank. If you could please clarify what that means maybe I’ll get it one day!
I get what you mean - I go pretty fast and the pattern has some advanced stitches. I linked the original video I learned the stitch from in the description box (the for the frills video tutorial) and here’s another video I found on the front/back post double crochet: ua-cam.com/video/S42_486HrEU/v-deo.html. Hope this helps!
@@LixiePigCrafts Thank you!
Genuinely struggling with this sweater but i will try from scratch
work.
Does that mean it worked? Sorry for seeing this comment late 😅
@@LixiePigCrafts hello I continued and I finished the sweater. I like this pattern and will try to make more for my other teddies
Thank you for sharing
so i followed this tutorial with the obvious intent of making a sweater right? except i fucked up somewhere along the way and ended up with a dress
ill try again next time 😅😅
Huh a dress sounds really nice too!
I tried making this with thicker yarn which was kinda a mistake...I am making this for a build a bear frog and I needed about 25 chains instead of 44 and it still ended up being big on her. I ended up doing like 2 or 3 less rows than in the video and it's still so long, I'm on the step with the sleeves and the work is too long for me to crochet arm holes. I may end up just sewing it up and calling it done because it's too long, sleeves are long for me to do the last several steps
I think get what you mean 😕 yeah the yarn can make a big difference. Your idea of sewing it tighter should work though!
It worked well, looks a bit like a poncho but it's very cute. Thanks for the tutorial
what is the flipping of the project after every row for? why not just go around in a circle?
One side of the stitch looks different from the other so by flipping it you’re alternating how the stitch looks and kind of making stripes. You don’t have to flip it but the final sweater would look slightly different 😊
garfields neck is not that long, oops
Btw, I don’t want to be rude but please watch a tutorial on how to hold your hook! I used to hold my hook like that all the time and it causes sooo much unnecessary pain!!
ok thanks i had no idea! I feel when I first started I just picked it up and never knew there was a specific way to hold it 😅
The teddy in the thumbnail is IDENTICAL and i mean identical to my build a bear rabbit who im making this for to cover tatty fur😭
Aww twinsies! 😅
What is the size of your crochet hook?
I used a 6.5 mm
Thanks! Your build a bear bunny is so adorable 😍🐇 Lunar New Year of the Rabbit is next Sunday
I’m so gonna try this!! Just one question what do you mean by doing it in the other direction? Thanks!! Love your videos!
I’m just explaining that once you flip the whole thing over and keep crocheting your technically going in the opposite direction as before. If that’s still confusing just ignore what I said and flip the sweater over between rounds! 😆
@@LixiePigCrafts thank you so much I love your channel you have taught me so much about sewing!!!
@@zoedupont8626 I'm so happy I could help!!
I’m very confused with the part where you connect in the beginning. 😭
I think I messed something up.. In I think round 3 or 4, I got one pin, almost made it to putting the second pin in, and I was at the end of the round 😅
Someone else had a similar problem- how many chains did you start with?
A jumper to fit a teddy bear like this one
I responded to your other comment to specify what you mean by jumper 🤣
idk what to do😢😢 ive remade this 3 times already with diff yarn and hooks but everytime i have to form the arm holes, one is bigger than the other. i just spent yet another 4 hours making a sweater for my fat ass frog 😔 i give up. ik it's not the tutorial and that it's me but im so disappointed
Hmm that’s weird, it’s really great that you’re still trying though! Don’t be too hard on yourself this is a pretty hard pattern and my tutorial could be better 😅 if it’s not too noticeable I’d just let the sweater be imperfect 🙃
would this fit a frog from Build A Bear? :)
Yes! The frogs are a little bigger than my Build A Bears though so you might want to make it a little longer 😊
i made this and couldn’t get it over my build a bear frogs giant head hahahaha. but i modified the neck part a little to make it bigger and it worked out!
@@starj636 aww yay!!! I forgot about the frog heads being a lot bigger lol
