When I first heard this song in high school I thought it was about a lost love. Now as an "oldster" when I listen to this song, I miss my parents. I will miss them forever.
My wife and I lost our youngest son several years ago. He was 27 and died of a heart attack. I was driving down the road several weeks ago and this song come on the radio. I had to pull over quickly as the sorrow that this song evoked just overwhelmed me. I took me almost an hour to stop crying. RIP Colton....miss you buddy.
Lost my only sibling, my younger brother in 2020, and songs like these bring out the loss and grief in everyone. Same for Jim Croce songs like Time in a Bottle or Photographs and Memories...
Beautiful song, I've been listening to Bread since I was a teen. It never hit me until the first time I heard it when I was 39 and my Dad had just passed. This is a song about a parent. My Dad and Mom saved my life by adopting me when I was 7 year old that needed a loving and caring family to take me in. They were amazing parents and sadly they passed too soon. I was 27 when I lost my Mom and 39 when I lost my Dad. This is my song to them.
I am 61 years old now, and been listening to this song since I was a teen. Makes me cry now, because everytime I hear that chorus "I would give everything I own, give up my life, my heart, my home... just to have you back, again", I think of my dog Max. I'd give all that to have him back, again.
New subscriber here in London. I adore this song and never tire of it. It's just incredibly moving and honest. One note: this is the studio version, so it was either dubbed over a live take, or they were miming. PS: That bassline is BANGING!
The older I get, the more these songs mean to me. Crying listening to this. The more I experience, the more empathy I have. I listen to this and think of my father. I dreamt of him every night for four years after he died. My husband lost his first wife and four-year-old son in a traffic accident many years ago and I know what he went through. He tried to bargain with God, "Take me, let them come back."
@@SaeedReacts. Yes, it is something from which one **never** really recovers. The accident happened the year I was born (yes, my husband is considerably older than I.) We go to the cemetery at least once a year to pay our respects. Two weeks prior to the accident, his wife gave birth to a stillborn son. I don't know how he made it through. I make sure to honour his wife and two sons with their photos throughout the house as well as displaying his son's sweet cowboy boots and other mementos. I watched my parents walk through the death of my twenty-seven year old sister and I truly don't know how one makes it through those times. But, God does help. God was gracious enough to completely blot the aftermath (he was in the car, too) from his mind. He does not remember seeing his wife & son and realising they were no longer alive.
This song always reminds me of my grandmother who passed 6/11/93 (I was 16) because she was the person described in this song in my life. I'm so thankful for your reaction to this. Take care ❤
Oh wow- the chills, and the emotions this invokes: remembering this song from my youth when my brother played this on repeat after going through the pain of a huge relationship break-up and now as an adult with the lens of having lost my father two years ago. Tell your people you love them often!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻more Bread. 💜
I always cry when I hear this song! It is so powerful and such an emotional song. David's voice is so great on every song he sang! If I am not mistaken it was written for his father that passed away. Thanks for the reactions!
Totally agree with the Dan Fogelberg comparison. So much of the 70's 80's era music had so much creativity in the writing and musicality. Love the song dynamics in how there are breaks but builds up with the drums and tempo.
Such a touching song! David Gates wrote this song in memory of his father who died in 1963 & never saw the success he achieved with Bread. Love David Gates voice. He has one of the most soothing & mellow voices. They had so many hits such as "Make It With You", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Lost Without Your Love", "It Don't Matter To Me", "The Guitar Man", "Sweet Surrender", "Aubrey" etc.
Sad to hear he never got to see the success of his son. Or maybe somehow he did. We can't say for sure. Definitely looking forward to more of their music.

My biggest issue with the genre of reaction videos is the lack of lyrical acknowledgement let alone actual commentary. Refrerence the reactions to "The Boxer" that completely ignore the lyrics.
