Why People Misunderstand the Book of Revelation

  • Are we living in the end times? Many Christians point to the deluge of disorder and division in the world today as evidence that we are living in the last days. However, this is often the result of Scripture being taken out of context. Misunderstandings about the end times (eschatology) have been widely propagated by a seemingly endless stream of end-times prophecies and popular books such as the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye. Hank Hanegraaff, the host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, is joined by end times expert and author Gary DeMar to clear up the confusion regarding the last days by discussing what the Bible really says about the end times and why it matters today. In this excerpt from their conversation in Episode #104 of the Hank Unplugged Podcast, Gary DeMar talks about why people misunderstand the Book of Revelation.

Brother approaching 13 years ago I got your Bible answer book mysteriously delivered to me and it led me to get saved. (Thank you)
Now i want to ask you to pray for me… to not go scorched earth on some very wicked devils all around me and I’m at end of my rope here. Please pray for strength and sound mind to override what the devil wants to do in me to these other true workers of Satan.
I don’t know how much longer I can endure this. ESP since one of them is directly across the street from me and I see him constantly and can even hear him in my home. Can’t escape him! He’s always causing me problems and he destroyed my life and self esteem by what he did to me in my house and he gets away with it and prospers.
He’s a drunk and has daily gay prostitution and I want out of my sodom and gomorroh situation desperately.
All that wicked spiritual activity at his place is affecting me 20 feet across the street.
He’s one hell of a tool for the devil in my life to say the least.

I would love to hear this entire episode, there are things in Revelation that does point to eternity although imagery is important.

How do you interpret the dead in Christ will rise first and those who are alive and remaining will be changed in a twinkling of an eye? Isn't there going to be a living generation who will not die but be changed in a twinkling of an eye?

    • @BibleAnswerMan
      @BibleAnswerMan  3 роки тому +3

Yes. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 informs us that those Christians who have already passed away - like Billy Graham - never lose their place in the future resurrection and neither do those who are still alive at the time the Lord appears a second time to judge the living and the dead. This is consistent with Jesus teaching of a time when there will be a resurrection, the righteous to eternal life and the unrighteous to eternal damnation (John 5:28-29). See this article > www.equip.org/bible_answers/when-do-we-receive-our-resurrected-bodies/
It is very difficult to see 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 communicating that in the distant future Christians will be resurrected then from the grave, and with the living Christians, they will be physically teleported to heaven (practically another dimension) only to return or teleported back seven years later to live on the earth for 1000 years, the same earth by the way which will include people who still experience disease, death and decay. There will even still be natural disasters. The 1000 years ends in a great satanic rebellion despite Jesus ruling over all the nations. It is only after the 1000 years that the earth is perfected, and probably another group of people are resurrected, albeit Revelation 20 makes it appear those people raised from the graves will be cast into the lake of fire or the second death without really saying anything directly about anyone else entering into the new haven and new earth. That is a bit too much to get out of 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. More likely reading something into it?
      Hope this helos.

@@BibleAnswerMan Hello. So now if Christian's are going to endure the Great Tribulation with 1 Thessalonians in mind there would have to be survivors during the great tribulation. Does God seal us with His protection? If so how do we get God's seal of protection? I don't want to accept the mark of the beast and to be honest I don't want to be martyred either. I know ultimately it's God's decision and willing to submit to His will for my life. I'm just curious how I'm going to escape the antichrist so I can live to be changed in a twinkling of an eye. If this event happens in my generation (I'm 59) I'm just so looking forward to that event.🙏🏻

What I found interesting in my research, that proves the early date of the book of Revelation. When you read chapter 3, John is writing to the church in Philadelphia. If the book of Revelation was truly written in the 90s, then John would’ve been writing to the church in Flavia, as it’s name was changed to Flavia during the reign of Vespasian. So just another piece of evidence proving the early date of the book of Revelation.

Olivet Timing Revealed by Luke’s Gospel:
Compare Luke's Gospel to that of Matthew if you want to understand the timing.
The disciples asked two different questions.
When will the temple be destroyed? What will be the sign of your Second Coming?
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple (These subtitles are found in e-Sword.)
Luk 21:5 Then, as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and donations, He said,
Luk 21:6 "These things which you see-the days will come in which not one stone shall be left upon another that shall not be thrown down."
(Mat 24:2 And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down." )
Luk 21:7 So they asked Him, saying, "Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?"
(Mat 24:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?")
( Mar 13:3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately,
Mar 13:4 "Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?")
Luk 21:8 And He said: "Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and, 'The time has drawn near.' Therefore do not go after them.
(Mat 24:5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. )
Luk 21:9 But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately."
(Mat 24:6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.)
      Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution
Luk 21:10 Then He said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
(Mat 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. )
Luk 21:11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
(Mat 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. )
Luk 21:12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name's sake.
(Mat 24:9 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake.) (Read Acts 22:19-20, where Paul reveals that he fulfilled this text.)
Luk 21:13 But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony.
      Luk 21:14  Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer;
Luk 21:15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.
Luk 21:16 You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.
Luk 21:17 And you will be hated by all for My name's sake.
(Mat 24:10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. )
Luk 21:18 But not a hair of your head shall be lost.
Luk 21:19 By your patience possess your souls.
(Mat 24:13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.)
      Jesus Foretells Destruction of Jerusalem
Luk 21:20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.
(Mat 24:15 "Therefore when you see the 'ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand),
(Look at the reference to Hanukkah in John 10:22, if you want to know what the Jews of Jesus time understood about Antiochus Ephiphanes attacking the city during 167 BC, when his forces killed thousands of Jews, and stopped the sacrifices. Those two things also happened during 70AD.)
Luk 21:21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.
(Mat 24:16 "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.)
Luk 21:22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
Luk 21:23 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. (See also Luke 23:28-31.)
(Mat 24:19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! )
Luk 21:24 And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
(Almost all Bible scholars agree that the first part of the verse above is about 70 AD. At the end of the verse we find a period of time known as “the times of the Gentiles”. In the verses that follow we find the future Second Coming of Christ. Paul also referred to this time period in Romans 11:25, and Acts 28:28.)
The Coming of the Son of Man
      Luk 21:25  "And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring;
(Mat 24:29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.)
Luk 21:26 men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Luk 21:27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
(Mat 24:30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.)
Luk 21:28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."
(Mat 24:33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near-at the doors!)

From "Antiquities of the Jews" by Josephus, Book 12, chapter 7
"6. When therefore the generals of Antiochus's armies had been beaten so often, Judas assembled the people together, and told them, that after these many victories which God had given them, they ought to go up to Jerusalem, and purify the temple, and offer the appointed sacrifices. But as soon as he, with the whole multitude, was come to Jerusalem, and found the temple deserted, and its gates burnt down, and plants growing in the temple of their own accord, on account of its desertion, he and those that were with him began to lament, and were quite confounded at the sight of the temple; so he chose out some of his soldiers, and gave them order to fight against those guards that were in the citadel, until he should have purified the temple. When therefore he had carefully purged it, and had brought in new vessels, the candlestick, the table [of shew-bread], and the altar [of incense], which were made of gold, he hung up the veils at the gates, and added doors to them. He also took down the altar [of burnt-offering], and built a new one of stones that he gathered together, and not of such as were hewn with iron tools. So on the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, which the Macedonians call Apeliens, they lighted the lamps that were on the candlestick, and offered incense upon the altar [of incense], and laid the loaves upon the table [of shew-bread], and offered burnt-offerings upon the new altar [of burnt-offering]. Now it so fell out, that these things were done on the very same day on which their Divine worship had fallen off, and was reduced to a profane and common use, after three years' time; for so it was, that the temple was made desolate by Antiochus, and so continued for three years. This desolation happened to the temple in the hundred forty and fifth year, on the twenty-fifth day of the month Apeliens, and on the hundred fifty and third olympiad: but it was dedicated anew, on the same day, the twenty-fifth of the month Apeliens, on the hundred and forty-eighth year, and on the hundred and fifty-fourth olympiad. And this desolation came to pass according to the prophecy of Daniel, which was given four hundred and eight years before; for he declared that the Macedonians would dissolve that worship [for some time].
      7. Now Judas celebrated the festival of the restoration of the sacrifices of the temple for eight days, and omitted no sort of pleasures thereon; but he feasted them upon very rich and splendid sacrifices; and he honored God, and delighted them by hymns and psalms. Nay, they were so very glad at the revival of their customs, when, after a long time of intermission, they unexpectedly had regained the freedom of their worship, that they made it a law for their posterity, that they should keep a festival, on account of the restoration of their temple worship, for eight days. And from that time to this we celebrate this festival, and call it Lights. I suppose the reason was, because this liberty beyond our hopes appeared to us; and that thence was the name given to that festival. Judas also rebuilt the walls round about the city, and reared towers of great height against the incursions of enemies, and set guards therein. He also fortified the city Bethsura, that it might serve as a citadel against any distresses that might come from our enemies. "
Josephus confirms above the understanding of the Jews of his time, who knew that Daniel had predicted the events of 167 BC, by Antiochus Epiphanes.
Josephus confirms it as a historical fact.
John 10:22 is a reference to the celebration of Hanukkah each year by the Jews of Jesus time.
The Book of Matthew was addressed mainly to a Jewish audience. Jesus was telling the Jews of His time that something similar to 167 BC would happen during 70 AD. Not only did Antiochus desecrate the temple, but he also attacked the city killing thousands of Jews and stopped the temple sacrifices. The temple sacrifices would also stop in 70 AD, due to the destruction of the temple. Based on John 10:22, the Jews were well aware of this historical fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy. Luke’s Gospel was written to more of a Gentile audience, so he spelled it out for them.
Matthew 24:15-16 and Luke 21:20-21 are clearly parallel accounts because of the common word elements in both passages. We also have the same reference to flee in the second verse in each Gospel.

I just saw the name Gary Demar below. While I was listening, I thought this sounded a lot like the Preterist view. And indeed, I find that it is. Not a Futurist nor a Dispensationalist myself I just want people coming here to know that the Higher Critical view of the preterist is not the only alternative hermeneutic to the Futurist view. There is the Reformation view. That view actually ties together aspects of the other two.

Really appreciate the sound reasoning shown by the hosts in the video, they bring out how unreasonable the thinking is behind so many who are twisting the scriptures. Enjoyed the video and could not find anything that I would disagree with. The Host stated that we are going to let the Bible interpret the Bible and see how scriptures are used in other places in the Bible; that is how you study the Bible. I ask that you please use the same logic when considering the 2nd and 3rd trumpet.
Symbolic terms used in connection with the second and third trumpets: Mountains, Wormwood, Rivers, Fountains, Springs, Sea.
Mountains mean governments to God. The great mountain of the 2nd trumpet would mean one that controls all the other mountains or governments, like a world government. Light, water, rivers, fountains, streams and springs of the 3rd trumpet would mean the flow of information or enlightenment. The sea of the 2nd trumpet would mean the wicked people of earth who oppose God and his laws. They support the government of the wild beast. When the info of the rivers and fountains are turned into wormwood, it would mean that the enlightenment is harmful, toxic, poison or bitter for humankind. The great star burning as a LAMP, that was cast into the sea of unbelievers, enlightens the world of today with wormwood. Lack of righteousness and justice is its hallmark.
A few supporting scriptures that enlighten us concerning the second and third trumpet: Mountain, Wormwood, Rivers, Fountains, Springs, Sea.
Joel 3:17 "Then you will know that I am the LORD, your God, who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain."
Amos 5:7 "O you who are turning justice into mere wormwood and cast righteousness to the ground."
Amos 6:12 "Do horses run on rocks? Does one plow there with oxen? But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood."
Amos 5:24 "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like an ever flowing stream."
James 1:6 "...he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed about by the wind."
Jude 12,13 "...shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees without fruit and uprooted-twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackest darkness has been reserved forever."
2Peter 2:16,17 "These are wells without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever."
Luke 21:24,25 "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea, (of unbelievers)."
Isaiah 57:20,21 "But the wicked are like the storm tossed sea, for it cannot be still, and its waves churn up mire and muck."
Daniel 7:2 ""The four winds were stirring up the vast sea, (of unbelievers)."
Daniel 7:3 "...beast coming up out of the sea, (of unbelievers)."
Revelation 13:1 "...beast ascending out of the sea, (of unbelievers)."
Isaiah 51:15 "The one stirring up the sea, (of unbelievers), that its waves are boisterous."
Isaiah 17:13 "The national groups will make noise of many waters."
Isaiah 60:2 "Darkness for nations, but upon you Yah will shine forth."
Habakkuk 1:14 "I will make man like the fishes of the sea over whom no one rules, like the creeping things in the sea."
Psalms 114:3,5,8 "The sea itself saw and took flight. What was the matter with you O sea that you took flight? Who is changing the rock, (Israel), into a reedy pool, a flinty rock into a spring of water?"
Revelation 21:1 "The sea, (of unbelievers), is no more."
Revelation 16:6 "Because they poured out the blood of the saints and of the prophets, you have given them blood to drink."
Proverbs 25:26 "A righteous person staggering before the wicked one is considered a fouled spring and a ruined well."
James 3:11 "A fountain does not cause the sweet and the bitter to bubble up out of the same opening does it?"
Revelation 22:17 "...let anyone that wishes take life's water free."
Ephesians 6:12 "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
Is this not how you let the Bible interpret the Bible? Blessings.

Revelation 11:1 is not speaking of a Temple constructed by man, but the Temple of the body. Meaning do you measure up. Are you wheat or chaff.? Are you worthy to carry God's Word to the world, are you worthy to be a part of the Two Witnesses. The key to understanding this, is the end part of the verse- "and them that worship therein."
    *Revelation11:1*
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, *and them that worship therein*

@@BibleAnswerMan Greetings. Certainly. We are in the third at present. The fourth was reached for some at the Harmonic Convergence of 1987. The fifth must be attained by 2032 at the new Golden Age. That is, for those who are ready to attain to that level of spiritual consciousness after many incarnations on this and other planets. That means in this life we have the opportunity to ASCEND by having earned it. That is individual rapture. There is no general Rapture as such, as stated by the Lord in a recent communique. It is not possible for the human body to rise physically without having risen to this level in body and soul. Simply believing in Jesus, that one has been saved and so on is far from sufficient. Any pygmy in the Amazon can say that which hardly means that he can suddenly find himself in the highest Seventh Heaven. See? We have to master the Mysteries as a bona fide Initiate (ideally a seven to fourteen-year course of study), expiate kharmic debt and succeed in the sixth initiation. At that point it is no longer possible for one to have a physical body according to the metaphysical Laws of GOD which are very strict indeed, and ascension takes place to the dimension (mansion) which one has earned, there being a great many going up through the Spiritual and finally the Divine Realms. It takes aeons to reach the Bodhisattva state of pre-divinity. Thank you for your question. Blessings - Rev Dr Darryl HA Schroeder PhD/Ministry

@laurabennett9865 No one knows the day our hour. Rather, we must remain faithful until the end. We live vigilantly as if Christ will return any moment but plan our lives prudently as if Christ will tarry another thousand years or more.

READ THE CONTEXT --> THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ROMANS --> THAT IS THE DAY OF THE LORD WHEN THE ANGELS PICK UP THE CHRISTIANS AND TAKE THEM TO HEAVEN.

It has everything to do with the Romans of the early days of the Church, antichrist, 666, the lot. Revelation was written re what would SOON take place, ie at the time of the apostle John

And when did we see Jesus coming in the clouds? Jesus did say, IMMEDIATELY after the tribulation of those days we would see that? Soooo... 😕

Clouds is a metaphor for judgement. Read the Old Testament .

Was it a metaphor when the angel asked the disciples why they were starring up in the clouds... He said this same Jesus will come again the same way he just left...
