Check out Elliot Hoffman of Car Bomb. He also has songs from his first band Spooge on his UA-cam. The only drummer I've known to absolutely DESTROY a woodblock set up. He'll make you want to give up playing drums because he's so good & effortless with all the time changes. He doesn't play to a click either, btw

Almost undeniably the greatest living rock drummer, but I think he's outclassed in the wider world of drumming. And I say that as somebody who shamelessly fanboys for Danny. He's undoubtedly my favourite drummer, but I think Larnell Lewis is the most technically proficient drummer out there right now, while also having an insane level of musical knowledge. At least from what I've seen.

5:23. A key component of this band is that the three that play the instruments; Adam on the guitar, Justin on the bass, and Danny on the drums, put together all the songs before Maynard has a listen, then Maynard writes the lyrics to go along with the music. It’s fairly unique, I believe. Maynard has sometimes added sounds, like with a loudspeaker.🌿🌸

Ever since 1993, when I learned of their principle song writing approach, the instrumental artists comprise the music months, or years, ahead of Maynard's contributions. This approach is paramount to Tool's overall sound which is expanded on in each album.

What use would the clicker have anyways if the song is changing its rhythmic patterns and tempo several times :D
I mean the Band is working together, leading each other into different sections or playing against each other with riffs and references that sometimes work as a forshadowing/hint to change parts and counter each others patterns.

Love your channel, man. As a guy who plays drums, I can answer a few of your questions. As far as Danny accenting Maynard’s vocals, that’s definitely intentional and pre-written, although since Maynard is always last to get hold of a song, it’s more like Maynard’s accenting Danny’s playing in a way. In bands in general, everyone plays to the drums, so Danny doesn’t stay in time by listening to Maynard. He stays in time because the tempo is what he says it is, as it is for all bands and their drummers. This is why drummers are called the backbone of a band. They provide the structure for the rest of the band to play in.
As far as your terminology, you’re good, mate. “Hit the drum” or “hit the thing” works just fine. The drums in front of him on the rack are called rack toms and the drums to his right on the floor are called floor toms. The “barrel” of a drum is called a shell, and the part of the drum you hit is called a head. Hope that helps!

That is correct... I would put it this way - it's in 11 with each beat subdivided into a triplet. There are several other equally valid ways of conceptualizing it... If one was writing it down, the correct way would be whatever way one finds easiest to read, or alternatively, whatever way contains the most actual information about how it sounds in "real life"... Musically speaking these things are not written in stone, so to speak.

When he’s bringing his arms in at the start while slowing down, watch how his wrists and hands turn in as well. He’s effectively changing grips which is changing the required force for the slower sticking. The thumbs up technique relies more on gravity and a pendulum/seesaw motion, opposed to palms down on the faster section where he’s using a finger and wrist motion for the speed.

Very cool of you to add in the drum machine showcase at the end. Actually, Danny from Tool also incorporates some pretty cool tech into his kit. He's got a pretty bonkers synth workstation on his left, and those black/red drum heads you see on his kit (like the one he's playing at the beginning of Pneuma) are also programmable like the drum machine in the vid you showed. Different areas of the drum head can be programmed and changed on the fly with different sounds, which is why he's getting different sounds out of hitting the centre vs. the edge of the pad. One huge advantage of the drum machine in the dubstep vid is that everything is so close together, so you can get really good economy of movement compared to a huge-ass drum kit where you've got to move entire limbs around.

All the guys record the the instruments, then they send those parts to Maynard(who lives in Arizona...and, I believe the rest of the guys live in California(L.A. area, I believe). But there have been 8ntervuews where Maynard talks about driving his vineyards, listening to the music and writes lyrics accordingly.

I love the intro with its alternating 14/8 and 19/8 sigs. It is also; 14/8 twice and a 5/8. Some even say it is a 33/8...but it all totals 33/8 before repeating four times. Matching the number 33 of his Celtics jersey.

You are of course correct. I often just call it 33/8 to avoid the explanation, and to get people to be like, '33/8 WTF?'.

19:38 Each of the notes he plays are on a different pad. He’s not changing pitch manually. Just triggering notes. I don’t say that to take anything away from him. Dope performance regardless.

Your point about his arms in the beginning, it's primarily comfort and actually LOOSENING tension. A very key part of drumming so smoothly and quickly is NOT tensing up.
I've been a drummer for 20 years now and this man is absolutely one of the best, most influential people to ever do it. And he's a very chill, laid-back, humble kind of guy too which just adds to his earned admiration.

Progressive rock is def something that's not for everyone & Tool has slowly gotten into it so their early records are pretty much straight 4/4 and then this new album is all over the map but it's incredible. They have a lot of King Crimson, Yes, Rush, stuff like that in their "feel" as progressive. I absolutely love the genre 😎✌️

I've watched the journeys of a few reactors learn about tool and I absolutely love how they always fall in love with Dany's work to the point they learn the word polyrythem. They actually look it up because Dany blew their minds. He has a way of inspiring people to learn more about music in a whole new way.

What's really mind blowing is now only is Danny Carry doing multiple time signatures at once, but the guitar is also doing a completely different time signature at times.
Another cool thing, Maynard James Keenan writes the lyrics to these songs after the music has been composed, so a lot of the drum composition with the lyrics is just the reverse of what you're inclined to think.
Cant wait to see more Tool reactions!

Ever since 1993, when I learned of their principle song writing approach, the instrumental artists comprise the music months, or years, ahead of Maynard's contributions. This approach is paramount to Tool's overall sound which is expanded on in each album.
