MetalJesusRocks I have to say I love your videos. So refreshing to have someone who doesn't yell or make annoying jokes and swears every other word. Good for you dude. Keep up the good work.
I have to throw in a few more hidden gems. 1) Operation Winback. A very fun third person shooter that's one of the earlier games to use a good cover mechanic. 2) Body Harvest. Made by the original creators of Grand Theft Auto, it has an open world design that was quite an achievement back then.
GreenBullOHWIR Same lol..I almost never finish games even if they're really good. They also have to be very addictive...like Pokemon or Harvest Moon...and I play portable games more often then other stuff so they have a good chance of me finishing them.
I just picked it up today at my local shop. We build up visits to the store to get 20% off, so mine was 26 after shipping and a cleeeaan copy. I looooove N64 ARRGHH!!
No mention of Space Station Silicon Valley? In my opinion its the exact definition of a hidden gem. You guys really need to play it if you haven't. Also that last "honorable mention" made me laugh!
Actually, Tonic Trouble was basically an engine test for Rayman 2, which is why the character looks so much like Rayman. The release also helped Ubisoft recoup development costs for the engine, even though Tonic Trouble wasn't that well received at the time.
Awesome, my favourite system. :) Jet Force Gemini is for me the game that doesn't get enough recognition, it's a phenomenal action/adventure. Nice to see it get at least an honourable mention.
***** That was definitely done as a joke. Superman 64 is one of his I hate U trophys. Where the person who loses, wins the really shitty game. ET and the Atari 5200 controller have also been trophies.
I can't believe they put Jet Force Gemini and Shadow Man merely in the honorable mentions. They clearly belong to the best N64 games of all time. R.I.P. Rare + Acclaim.
So underrated. It had so much personality(like all Rare Ware games) and really cool environments. The cartoon violence was over the top lol. The sound design is where it truly shined though. Amazing SFX and the soundtrack is easily the best on the N64......
Oh man, Rocket, I loved that game so much. Never actually beat it, but there is so much variety in the levels. Designing your own rollercoaster, dipping yourself in different colored paint to fool a colorblind guard, a lot of puzzles with picking up and throwing stuff, and that's just off the top of my head.
N64 is hands down my favourite console. So much fun! And... I like the trident controllers, very versatile for different game genres. I didn't like the way the analogue sticks would wear down(But now you can buy a replacement stick which is similar to the Game Cube's) I also found it irritating to have to swap out the memcard and rumble pack so I would just leave the memcard in for games that needed it. Also you could get 3rd party rumble packs that didn't require batteries!
Very true. I'll admit to not giving the first game a fair chance as s kid because it didn't play exactly like your typical 3d fighting game from the 90s, but I bought it's sequel a few years back as an adult and I'm hooked on the point system and how a match can end at any moment with a well-timed throw or an ill-timed kick. My only gripe is the lack of a story for characters. They all seem interesting enough and there are a few hints with the music and stages that some of these characters are connected, so... c'mon, Genki! What's the deal?
I had a couple of these games... Hybrid Heaven, Shadow Man, Tetrisphere (which was technically a toroid shape)... But Aidyn Chronicles was very unique. It was one of the earliest examples of using region segmentation and preloading to create continuous open regions, far larger than the capacity for the system to load as a whole... Or in other words, it was a precursor to open world 3D games. If you look at the horizon of a game like Fallout 3, and and pay attention to objects int he distance, you'll notice the game load segments. Aidyn Chronicles did this too, but way back on the N64! I used to get lost in that game's world, so I decided to map it out (game never had an integrated map). Took a grid of 2x4 sheets of paper taped together for me to map out the first region. Game also had perma-death for characters. You could go and recruit replacements, but they would be below the level of your party. The battle system was inspired by the system used in Quest 64, and let you move within a radius per turn, inside a battle ring. If you could get all your party outside the battle radius, you could run, otherwise, you actually positioned yourself around the enemy to try to gain a ground advantage, or line up magic, etc. It was slow paced, but for a patient player, it was unique and interesting. You know... I actually liked Quest 64... It was a turn based RPG that could be beaten in 8 hours easily... It was like RPG light! I could sit down and play the whole game in a single sitting :D
Pokemon Puzzle League definitely went under the radar but just about anyone who had a N64 back then knew about Pokemon Snap. Especially the legions of late 80s and 90s kids. Pokemon was one of the rulers of the planet in entertainment and Pokemon Snap was everywhere and got even further major exposure due to the photo prints from Blockbuster.
Many games will prompt you to remove rumble pack and insert memory card, save, and than reinsert rumble pack. If you incorrectly follow the prompts, you can corrupt the memory card data, that is how it is done without third part gear.
Hello , i am from chile and i enjoy a lot yours videos because i discover interesting video-games and i can improve my listening english skill too! Greetings!
Don't forget Space Station Silicon Valley. It's made by the Rockstar guys. A completely great game in every way. You're a computer chip that jumps bodies between robot animals. Check it out
Even though this is nearly a decade old, MJR is the place to go for REAL hidden gems. Their are some channels I won't name that don't seem to understand the definition. This is the only channel I have found that actually surprises me with games I never heard of. It still blows my mind at what one can miss somehow, someway. I used to subscribe to Nintendo Power for many years, but somehow never came across really cool games like SCARS nor heard anyone talk about them, really. There is also a small touch of sadness because that game , especially, I would have loved to play that game with my brothers back when we were kids. We would have played the crap out of that, no question.
Well, how I see it is that MetalJesus' Hidden Gems videos are made with the fact that you're new to a system (so, in this case, the N64). I think the reason Snap was picked in this, was because when people discussed Pokemon games on the N64, Stadium or Stadium 2 would usually be the one to be mentioned. If you see an N64 newbie, Pokemon Snap may look like a bad game to them, cuz people are mostly mentioning the Stadium games. That's how I see it, at least. I do see your point, though, as Pokemaniacs typically know about the title.
N64 games had those screens telling you when to insert which Pak into your controller mainly to enable you to save on your Controller Pak and play with your Rumble Pak even though there was no official combo product that did both, so mainly games which support both Controller Paks and Rumble Paks (like Snowboard Kids and Wipeout 64) had them.
Yea. Ever play Body Harvest (N64) by them? It definitely shows some early Grand Theft Auto design ideas in a scifi/time travel scenario. SO fun, I wish they would do a new one
Cool that Mace: the Dark Ages was an honorable mention. The game that I spent the most time with on the N64 aside from the normal mainstays of the system was Extreme-G, loved that game. Excellent racer.
Jesus H Christ! :) How can you not have ogre battle 64 in this list? Or Body Harvest? Or Indiana Jones and the infernal Machine? Or Space Station Silicon Valley 3000? or F-Zero X that sold less than 350,000 copies world wide?
Here's some more hidden gems that probably only I have played. Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Bros, 1080 Snowboarding, Mario Party 2, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark, Legend of Zelda Majors Mask and Paper Mario.
A very underrated game was Shadowman, dude I was so amazed by that game. The immersion, the setting, it really was something incredible to me back then. A couple extra mentions that you have not mentioned are: Conker's Bad Fur Day, Spiderman, Rayman 2, Jet Force Gemini. Some games that are not hidden but are great: Turok (1,2 and 3), Perfect Dark, Golden Eye, Pokemon Stadium, Harvest Moon, Star Fox 64, Doom 64 (it was a custom version not a simple port!), Starcraft 64 (oh yeah one of the best rts games), Castlevania, Bomberman 64, Mario Tennis and Mario Golf, Paper Mario, etc. There were countless awesome games for that console! I don't know why some of the more "western" titles are never in your lists guys, you almost make lists about JRPG games only or japanese franchises that never came to america...I mean it's fare if you like them but it's hard to experience a game in japanese for 90% of the world, and you need to add the difficulty of importing them...the world is not only Japan and the USA. I still love your work guys! Cheers!
I never saw that Sucker Punch game before watching this video. I have to agree that you can tell by that game that they were a quality developer even then, it looks so solid for an N64 game. I enjoy watching your videos guys. I like your enthusiasm and appreciate how genuine you all are, so thanks.
Wait, Kinsey DID have an advantage with the Xena game in the I Hate You video at the Beach House! LOL. Love these Hidden Gems videos sharing both cool games and the rapport with your friends.
Glad to see Mace the Dark Age get some love. I loved that games art style and presentation. It didn't get great reviews when it first came out but I don't know why it's aged very well and still enjoyable to this day in my opinion.....
I have Tazan for PC, same general game, AMAZING! (Also, some fun trivia for you, Disney games date back to 1980-1981 with the Game & Watch's "Mickey Mouse" game)
Love your videos, MJR, from Gamer Eats to Hidden Gems, quality as usual. But looking forward for your next road trip video, it's been a while actually :)
Before there was ONLINE multiplayer, there was SAME SCREEN multiplayer! The Nintendo 64 was the GOD of 4-player split screen multiplayer. So many of its titles had this feature, and the multiplayer was usually the BEST part of any particular game. Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, Golden Eye, Turok 2, and so on. Good times. Good memories. :D
I remember a friend that had that hybrid heaven game. He loved it and played it tons. I just sat there waiting for him to be bored so we could play 007 multiplayer :) Good times
Hey Metal Jesus, I have a request. I don't know how feasible this is but I'd like to see you, Kinsey, and Reggie ranking your favorite games in some way. Since I think a lot of us (myself included) probably can't name our overall top ten or something maybe you could rank your top games from a variety of consoles. How about, say, top ten NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, etc. games? Or maybe your favorite handheld games? Or rank your favorites from a certain genre or something like that? Mostly I want to see a video with you, Reggie, and Kinsey. Reggie has great taste in games and Kinsey knows her shit so that would be fun. I hope you consider it. I think a lot of us would dig that.
I must thank you guys. You reminded me that rumble packs had batteries in them. I just cleaned out 20 year old batteries (one had ruptured) and cleaned out the corrosion around them.
For me Pokemon Snap isn't a hidden gem, but it is one of my favorites and it's so much fun every time. Pokemon Snap needs a sequel. Yes on Gex 64! I rented Tarzan back in the day and enjoyed it a lot. My best friend from childhood is always asking me if I've picked up Rocket Robot on Wheels because that is one he adores. Damn straight Chameleon Twist and Tetrisphere! I would throw in Space Station Silicon Valley. Another great video! - Tyler
Dude, you have to try Fighter's Destiny, so addictive! So many hours playing that one and of course International Superstar Soccer 98.. Great channel man! saludos from Mexico :)

Did she say ninetendo ds?
Yep
.......indeed....fuck
Yes indeed
It’s two years later, and yep. She still said Nintendo DS. You know, just in case you were wondering.
And metal jesus' shirt says Dicks
Shadow Man is really good...it's surprising how it's never brought up when people do lists for the N64's best games...hidden gem indeed.
The first boss has hilarious voice acting! Never got to the end of it, maybe one day.

lmao @ your drawing of you 2. you guys forgot to draw the other half of your drawn selves!
how else do you use it?
Well didn't the game Rez come with a sex toy peripheral for the controller?

she said Nintendo DS games in the beginning instead of N64 lol

it was an awesome multiplayer game and solo game!
OH MY GOD, I JUST REALIZED THAT THE SHIRT... IS A PIKA-BOO. GET IT?! ... Okay, I'll show myself out.
Hybrid Heaven is definitely an underrated game. Thanks for mentioning it!!
i love this girl, is super cute & hilarious 😊😊
Glad Tetrisphere got an honorable mention. It's definitely my favorite puzzle game of all time.
Chameleon Twist is crap.
She's so pretty!
Nice to see Gex on the list. The Titanic exclusive level was pretty cool. Love Gex's quotes. "They call him Flipper, Flipper!" Haha :)
I'm not sure how it's a hidden gem, it's one of the first games I got.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade nice logic. Anybody could get any game first. Is that the one you were super excited for versus all the other top selling games?
Kinsey is just so damn cute omfg
You guys really know your stuff, always a pleasure to watch.
None of these games look very inspiring. If these are the gems... I wonder wat the stinkers are...
Casper Egas thats because the n64 library is very scarce.
I remember a friend that had that hybrid heaven game. He loved it and played it tons. I just sat there waiting for him to be bored so we could play 007 multiplayer :) Good times
All of these games are amazing!!
I loooooved pokemon snap. And Omg you mentioned my favorite gem of n64 chameleon twist! I still have that game.
8 years later… still love this series
Tetrisphere is my favorite Tetris game. I can't wait for portable N64s to come out next year so I can play it on the toilet.

I really enjoyed Pokémon Snap, Rocket: Robot on Wheel, Cameleon Twist 1/2, Gex and Iggy's Reckin Ball, they weren't hidden at all from me! :)
Best N64 hidden gem : Rampage World Tour
Dude, you have to try Fighter's Destiny, so addictive!
So many hours playing that one and of course International Superstar Soccer 98..
Great channel man! saludos from Mexico :)
