    What do you think about collecting for the N64? Does it have a library that you enjoys? Does the lack of interesting accessories/controllers bother you at all, or do you still get a kick out of going after stuff?

      I already left my inspirational speech in another comment, but I just wanted to note that while I don't really collect in terms of going for a number of games or for the sake of collecting or anything, if I was ever going to get a full set it'd be for the N64. I'm still finding all kinds of cool games I've never heard of before and the N64 aesthetic is incredibly charming to me, so it carries me through a lot of games that would be mediocre otherwise. The story of the system's progression is told more by the games than the accessories, so I don't mind that at all. Most general gaming accessories I don't even use anyway so I don't mind the more focused approach, especially with how versatile the controller is... if a bit poorly thought out. So yes, I enjoys the library. (Correct that typo before you get too much flack for it)

      Collecting for the N64 from 2004-2008 was the bomb. everything was really cheap at gamestop

      I only recommend collecting if you know the system very well and have the money to do so.
      All the top and popular n64 games have superior remasters and re releases such as turok 1 and 2 zelda Oot and MM on 3ds aswell as the rare replay which has most of rare's top games which makes the library very narrow in this day and age.

      I collected for awhile, and got about two-thirds of the full set before I gave up on collecting altogether. The N64 is a cool console to collect for because it has so many unique games for it. @kylecunningham6167 4 роки тому +4

      @J Jackson Well, if you wanna collect the whole library, just like the NES or SNES yeah a lot of it is gonna be shit. There's maybe like 30 all-time-great games on N64, a few dozen good ones and then of course some that have been ported to nice new remastered versions. No loading does make a difference though if you're someone who likes playing earlier 3D games on real hardware, because load times on the PS1 are absolutely brutal.

    • @atrocity3010
      @atrocity3010 4 роки тому +1

    What makes sense about N64 collecting is that it’s the last solid state device, so it probably lasts longer. Cartridges aren’t as fragile as disks. So it’s probably easier to find working copies of games and systems. And for emulating the games take up a lot less space. Like all 3 Tony Hawk games take up less memory than one PS1 iso of just the first Tony Hawk game.
    There are plenty of good games too. Even if not a classic in my eyes.

    I am currently collecting for the N64, working on a complete US library. I chose the N64 to collect for because of all the fond memories playing N64 with my friends. It is also one of the easier consoles to collect for that won’t empty your bank account. For instance the highest price game is 450 dollars lose which is sculptors cut. Prices go down from there. I also have custom plastic cases with games box art made to store my games. I am sitting at about 140 games right now. I have all the big name first party titles and the power 5 aka the 5 most expensive titles. I have been collecting for it for about two years now.

      I have some old consoles and games but honestly they are stored away atm. (I have everdrives too)
      My retro build is my CRT tv hooked up via an HDMI to component signal converter; so it acts like a second monitor. So anytime I want to watch an old movie, or play a snes game or whatever I just play it on that screen. The audio swaps over and everything so a few clicks and I am playing.
      I have switch pro controllers using a xinput bluetooth converters for controllers because they are my favorite controllers for old and new games.
      No wires all over the place; I just click 2 things and I am on my CRT.

It's fun to hook it up and fool around with it but the controller has not aged well and some games don't play well either. • @IanSane
    @IanSane 4 роки тому +2

    To me the small library is part of the appeal of collecting for the N64. My thinking is that it doesn't have a lot of depth but that makes it easier to get a good collection. You could probably do well with about 30 games or so and have a good sampling of the best the system has to offer and it isn't as expensive as something like the Saturn. You could build a good collection relatively quickly and then move on to another system. My collecting habits tend to be to get the top 10% or so of a system's library. If you have a similar approach then small but affordable libraries are ideal. A completist would get more turned off by the over and under representation of certain genres.

    It’s a relatively small library, with a lot of quality titles. I didn’t really need to “collect” N64 games because I already got so many of them when they were already current. I would consider this basic consumerism, not necessarily collecting. The only n64 game I ever bought “after the fact” was Conker’s Bad Fur Day… with all the warnings on the box, there was no chance I would have been allowed to play it as a kid LOL. What it comes down to, nobody needs 200 games for any console. But you can build a very respectable library of 25 or so absolutely phenomenal titles. I could also do the same for any other system. What’s here is fantastic. It’s about quality not quantity!
    Oh, and there was a fight stick. It wasn’t very good, but it existed. I’m staring at it right now, I keep it around as the player 4 controller. You know the one.

Many titles are very expensive for this system, and I think it’s in a peak for pricing right now personally. Purchased a copy of Super Bowling 3 years ago for $100, now it’s selling for almost $350 loose! It’s just too much money to pay for certain games just due to their backstory in my opinion. What's not considered enough in this is the nice box art and physical cartridge aspect of collecting for N64 .I went to a game store with a really well presented boxed collection , controllers and system variants in it looks great, which collectors like. Also the N64 was very strong in the areas I like - racing, fps, platformers and the graphics were getting good for that generation at the end of its life.

    Honestly I think the N64 has the absolute worst nostalgia-inflated market out of pretty much any system, the games just simply should not be as expensive as they are for how well it sold (even if it was dwarfed by the PS1). Practically any game you've heard about for the N64 is $30+ behind a glass case close to the register. Given its smaller library in general it's just not a fun system to collect for at all to me.
    It's kind of like the TG-16 in a lot of ways, though that's actually rare, the N64 is just inflated AF.

  • @kylecunningham6167

    Fun fact: Quake II on N64 is actually a different game from the original. It wasn't TOTALLY different (like DOOM 64) but it has all-new single-player and multiplayer levels. Most people didn't realize this though because a) a crummy PSX port came out at the same time, and that was generally the same as the PC version and b) the first Quake was also on N64, and that one was the same as the PC version.

    The N64 was a pretty kick-ass console imo. Sure, it was weird and the controller was... experimental, but it felt okay and there were enough games to keep me entertained for years. I still play N64 to this day, but only through the power of emulation and a DualShock 4. It's so much better this way. The original hardware just doesn't do it for me anymore. I can see why not many people would have any incentive to get into this console.
    Here are a few games that I enjoy today: F-Zero X, Blast Corps, Smash Bros, Road Rash 64, GE 007, Perfect Dark, Mario 64 (my baby loves it), Star Fox 64, Chameleon Twist, Excitebike 64, Nightmare Creatures.
    I would have listed more popular titles like Banjo-Kazooie, Zelda, Tony Hawk, Resident Evil... but those titles have superior versions which I play on other system emulators. I'm just waiting for 3DS emulation to mature so that I can finally replace Star Fox 64.

    I largely skipped N64 and went straight from SNES to Gamecube. Playing the N64 without any real nostalgia, excluding party games like Mario Kart and Smash, I've never understood the continuing hype. I think it's because a lot of my mates came of age and played with that console when we were kids. That first era of 3D games hasn't held up very well, with a few notable exceptions.

    • @snotmaw
      @snotmaw 4 роки тому

      it's a lot of nostalgia. imo the library has aged the worst of any of the nintendo home consoles. the library has a handful of classic first party titles and the rest are mostly awful racing games and sports games. most of the games have aged horrendously compared to other 3d consoles from the era. the graphics are always muddy, controls usually clunky, colors are terrible. the analog stick is awful and playing fps games wth it is unpleasant. a game like goldeneye has aged very badly, even if it was amazing and fun back in the day. most of the cross-platform games are much worse than ps1 versions. I do still like pokemon stadium though.

    I think the N64 has a lot going for it that other consoles simply don't have. It's harder to emulate than the SNES, GameCube, and even Wii, and with emulation and ports, it's control scheme and joystick movement don't always translate 1:1. It's library being small makes it seem perfectly reasonable to collect or play almost every N64 game and makes hidden gems more interesting in a "How did I miss this?" sort of way. The N64 is personally one of my favorite consoles despite it's shortcomings. And the fact there aren't a whole lot of N64 games makes me wish more games were made in that sort of style or aesthetic.

    I played the N64 a lot with my brother and my cousin (my cousin had it before us). We played a bunch of GoldenEye and Mario Kart 64. My brother and I got a N64 later in it’s life (Christmas of 1999 we got the console bundled with Star Wars Episode I Racer). I have some nostalgic like for the console, but in general I agree it hasn’t aged the best.
    A lot of the reason to me is the graphical style from that period just hasn’t aged that well at all. Also when you look at the console it is true about the library. There are some games that are great like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Brothers, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye, the THQ wrestling games (WCW/nWo Revenge, WWF WrestleMania 2000, and WWF No Mercy being my favorites), and a handful of others. Otherwise though there just isn’t a lot to really go out of your way for on the system.
