  • Hope this was of value to you, sort of a massive edit in the end, but a topic worth talking about.
To say it really succinctly : You get what you pay for in dimensions other than sound, while essentially anything can sound good. And if sound is the bottom line, you're really paying for a different user experience.
These synths are in different enough price brackets that the fact they're competing at all in spectacular, a great time to be buying synths.

I've seen a few of your videos and I really like what you do. I love my Novation Bass Station II and I've owned it for a long time now. Here's some additional info about a couple of options. Some of your viewers might find this helpful.
6:56 - Core Sound - Adding Overdrive - The video demonstrates the overdrive (pre filter) and the distortion (post filter) but also the "Osc Filter Mod" at 7:07. Some viewers might think it has something to do with the overdrive or the distortion. It doesn't. It's better to mention it in the "Mod Options" and I'll soon explain what it does.
15:10 - Mod Options - The Bass Station II has more modulation options.
    1. Osc Filter Mod - With this you can actually use the oscillator 2 as a modulation source. Turning the knob changes the depth of the oscillator 2 modulating both the pitch of the oscillator 1 and the filter's frequency. So, it's "oscillator and filter modulation" and you can create many different sounds with it including some FM sounds.
    2. Looping envelopes - Both the Mod Envelope and the Amp Envelope can be looped (you can set how many times they loop or just select infinite) and the envelopes then behave like custom LFOs. (Just remember to add a positive or negative value to the "Mod Env depth" in the filter settings when you use the mod envelope... and usually also add some resonance to hear the changes more clearly)
    Here's a few tips:
Self-oscillating filter - The resonance knob adds a peak to the frequency, which you have selected with the filter's frequency knob (often just named as "cut off"). When the resonance is very high, then that peak is so massive that it produces its own sine wave. You can now get a sound from just the filter... (You can test this by setting the volume off from all oscillators.) ...and of course, the frequency knob now changes the pitch of that sine wave.
Osc Filter Mod - When you set the pitch of the oscillator 2 very low and also set the keyboard to a very low octave, then you can use the oscillator 2 like an LFO. (LFO is also an oscillator but it's a Low Frequency Oscillator. You just can't set the keyboard tracking off from the Osc 2). Using the "Osc Filter Mod" when the filter self-oscillates is a great way to test how it works.
Do the same as above but also add an envelope loop to the Mod Envelope. (Loop the Amp Envelope later as well.) Try some very short Attack and Decay times and perhaps also a bit longer attack times. There's quite a few modulation options this way... and you can entertain yourself with plenty of otherworldly sound effects. :-)
Bonus tip: Remember that the arpeggiator can also repeat just a single note. You can achieve quite similar results to a saw wave LFO with the arpeggiator...
Maybe just something interesting to try. Take care and enjoy your synths!

    • @Vimana
      @Vimana Рік тому +1

@@andivax That's a very good addition. Thanks for that. I really like when synths have the external input and you can also use it for that purpose, just like you said. Great that you mentioned it. To be able to modify any sound that comes through the "ext in" is such a fantastic option to have.
When I wrote some of my tips I forgot to add that it's great to try them out with the "Latch" button on. Some people might not know that the latch is not just for the arpeggiator or the sequencer but it also works like a "drone" button and can keep a sound playing without pressing the keys. It can be quite useful.

    • @Vimana
      @Vimana Рік тому

@@JorbLovesGear Well, you just can't trust your own memory. I was wrong... The "Osc Filter Mod" only lets you modulate the filter's cutoff frequency with the oscillator 2. So, there's no way to modulate the pitch of the oscillator 1 with the oscillator 2.
This took me a while to realize... I got my recording studio working after a long break and I also had a chance to play with my Bass Station 2 again.
I should probably correct this information but UA-cam says "Returned error" when I try to edit my original post.
Anyway, I'm just happy if I could help someone. You can so easily add to the confusion but this time I got it right. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.

Jorb! So happy I found your channel. It's refreshing to find someone who just.... Seems like a regular dude.... For the most part, I don't know you personally, or what you are like outside of UA-cam. But I digress.
Found you through Look Mum No Computer and a rabbit hole I fell down. So happy I did! I've been a musician since I was a young lad, around 8 years old I started playing drums. My father was always in bands when I was a kid. He played guitar, so I always had someone to jam with. And, through music, my father and I formed a very tight bond that I don't think we would have otherwise.
    Again, I digress.

Good to hear someone talk about user experience being part of the value of a synth. I've been through a lot of gear and sold some great sounding synths that I just didn't get along with operationally. If you don't enjoy using your gear, you're not going to get as much out of it, I think, so if the budget allows, don't feel bad spending for that. And sometimes that user experience is best on cheap gear! So it's not always a case of spending more to get more. If you love the sound and the interaction, that's all.

7:27 BSII doesn't have continuous waveforms no, but you can get far with oscillator 2 when osc 1-2 sync is on. For example you could have a triangle at oscillator 2, pitching osc 2 down with the sync on would then transform the triangle into a sawtooth. And you can easily transorm either waveform into a sine using the lowpass filter, so we can kind of make some continuous waveform morphing on the BSII, but no dedicated knob. Well the coarse tuning knob for osc 2 will function as a knob morphing between triangle and saw, so that's the dedicated knob. You can even modulate the pitch of osc 2, controlling this morphing between saw and triangle with LFO 1 or the Mod Envelope ;-) If you need continuous morphing into the square and pulse, then maybe good results can be achieved by automating the mixer?

I save all my patches to the grid, color coded for easy recognition, and sequence from an external sequencer for most applications. This allows for me to change sounds at the push of a pad. Lightning fast for live performances that require multiple sound changes. They're basically a BSII with one LFO instead of two and can be found for around $225.

The Motion Sequencer on the CMS can function as a second LFO, plus you can record the knob/slider movement of over 50 parameters…and you can do parameter locking per step. I’m loving it so far, at times it feels like you’re really touching the music. So far my only downsides are that the CMS doesn’t respond to pitch bend nor mod wheel messages from external midi controllers (I wonder if I can map coarse tuning to midi), there’s no un-quantization or micro steps, the sub oscillator can’t be independently detuned…that’s about it. I highly recommend the Flippin’ Grooves sound pack, a nice range of sounds and the drum patches are organized into little kits which makes the CMS a lot easier to use as a drum machine. I wonder if it would have sold better if they marketed it as a Bass Station Desktop X or something?

Not sure if you mentioned it but did you consider get a semimodualar or a modular? When it comes to sound design your options are endless and the amount of modulation you have is retricted by the numbers of cables, mults and mixers you have. Obviously, the process is slooow but its worth it sometimes. Its true, when it comes to get a quick and specific result, modular could be a hassle (semimodulars are more efficient in that). But if its about experimenting and searching for things to add to track eurorack could be a powerful option! You can have a wavetable oscillator with an analog doepfer one going into a MS-20 filter but have system-100 envelopes and LFOs.. you get me :)
Its kindof triggering me to see this beautiful sub 37 with the moog logo on it but not even being able to use all the modulators in a patch. Obviously, sound comes first and if the sub 37 is worth it (i dont know, i have no experience with it) its a fair compromise, I guess. The Juno106 also isnt famous for the sound design options but for its sound.
I guess if the first synth you have is modular you wont be happy with any monosynth that isnt modular after that hahah

As someone who regularly takes their gear places and plays with other people, synths with exterior power supplies are a no go. I don’t care how inexpensive they are or the features they have. And plastic cases are also troublesome. But if they are going to sit on your desk, that’s probably not a problem.

Hi, i have a Mokey, it was my first hardware synth, so I can’t dislike it and probably never selling it. Of course today there are lots of good alternatives. I agree the sequencer is not fun at all, so I never use it. In the other hand, the arp works and there’s an update that makes relatching possible. The only problem with this is that there’s a “silicon bug” that bricks the unit if you attempt the upgrade...I did it and had to send the board to DSI , but they fixed it and send it back with the new os.
The best part of this synth is the build quality, its raw powerfull sound , and it is yellow! IMO

I contacted Carson before bricking the unit ‘cause there was a warning in the non official forum (the forum before the actual web site). He told me to try it, and if a had the problem, just send the board. So I opened the unit and took the board out. I live in South America so sending the whole unit was not ideal. He was super helpful and returned my mokey to life with this new feature. Maybe you should write an email to Dsi.

Great video as always. I miss my BSII. I sold it before the good updates 😖. Anyway, I think you may have missed some tricks it has... like the filter having an acid filter and that with micro tuning you can literally have a different patch on each key (saw someone else’s video about that). I agree it is superior to the Sub37 on modulation. For me, i’m not at all interested in the Sub37. For the same price I got a Sequential Pro 3 that has near infinite modulation, a better sequencer, effects, and three filters, one of which is a Moog styled ladder filter 🤷🏻‍♂️. At $1400 or so, I would expect more than what the Moog offers. And people say... “but the sound, there’s nothing like the sound of a Moog...” but I just don’t hear anything so spectacular that I would handicap myself on sound design and options when synths in the same price range offer so much more. And that’s EVERY Moog. Just not the best options for me in their price range. But I do miss the BSII...

The tuned feedback (and literal “grunge” button) is unlike anything I’ve ever used on a synth before. But it seriously has to be used sparingly cuz it gets nasty quick. Then you have the SEM filter like on the OB6, the ladder filter, and the regular P6 style filter. Unfortunately, you have to pick one. They can’t be used parallel or one into another. Oh, it has a completely different analog distortion too... if the tuned feedback weren’t enough. It can be used as a 3 voice paraphonic. And you can make your own wavetables for the digital oscillator (it’s got two VCOs and one digital osc). Definitely worth checking out!!!

I knew i purchased professional equipment. Albeit it had mini keys, but the sound was superb. Flash forward to the grandmother and i can honestly say the sound you can achieve from it is definitely on a higher notch. The bass is what is really intriguing on that machine. Which does infact surpass the jdxi dsp. Grandmother is at twice the price of a jdxi. But in my opinion it's worth. With that said a good artist can make good music on anything with the right effort.

Yes, you generally do get what you pay for. Yes, the units have some variables in their capabilities and sounds. Assuming you can make the sounds you need with any of them, when you choose the Moog you get a machine that's built like a tank with a steel frame, aluminum case, real wood on the ends, and MADE IN THE USA, by hand, by local workers in a local USA factory, made by the employees that own the company. Often people complain that nothing is made in the USA, but when it is, they don't want to pay the cost of having a USA made product. You can visit and tour the factory, you can buy your synth in the factory store, from the people who actually made it if you like. They give workshops around the country, and you're dealing with the downline of people who worked with Bob Moog himself when the synth was originally created. Having been playing with these devices since they were first available to the public, (my first was a Minimoog in 1971) none of these others are made to the standard of quality that a Moog is. This may not matter if it rarely leaves the studio, and even if you're not in a band setting, but going around doing demonstrations or playing sessions in other studios it's hard to beat the quality of a Mood machine.

Great comparison. The Sub 37 sequencer has a neat feature that you didn't mention, which is the sequencer records the mod wheel position.
One of the features I really like about the Sub 37 are how fast the patches change. It seems like they change literally instantly-- fast enough you can change a patch to a new patch with the sequencer running and there's no glitch. Useful if you want a different sequence in the chorus vs the verse but you want the same patch -- just duplicate the patch and record two sequences.
Another thing I like is the stability of the oscillators. I don't know what Moog does, but their oscillators are really stable. Since I play in a band that's an important factor for me. I don't know how the other two compare in that regard.
For me the killer feature of the Sub 37 is pretty obscure. It responds to CC#2. The other two don't, so I can't play them with my EWI.
