0:30 the overdrive is more like an amplifier that drives the signal into the filter, amping it up to the point of distortion without introducing significant distortion, only a little extra crunch and umph. The distortion effect post-filter on the other hand actually distorts the signal significantly by introducing considerable amounts of clipping. The distortion knob is for making it scream.
Just got mine 2 days ago and have been blown away by how good it sounds. Had a Roland gaia for a few years. Didnt realise what Ive been missing not having a true analogue.
Just got the Afx station and gotta say I'm still wrapping my head around this synth. All too often when I tweak a knob the results aren't quite what I'm expecting. Definitely not my first synth (1st was a JP-8000) owned plenty of synths over the years but currently the only hardware synths I own are the virus ti and now the afx. Just odd that this is the first synth I've owned that really felt like random results. I think I'm just not used to how the routing or layout works but I do love the sounds I get.
Do you have an example? Or did it all start making sense? If it hasn't, it will. Just simplify, using only one oscillator at a time until you figure that out.
One of the most complete feeling synths at all. I didn´t like it when it was released. The specs sounded boring to me but after a short test @musikmesse 2015 I was completely convinced by its sound. And just last week I took action and ordered one of the most self contained rendition of an analogue mono synth: the Novation AFX-station.
my first synth ever, like you said easy to be used and affordable. i love my bass station 2, and another cheap synth same easy to be used is modal skulp got some polyphony as well, i forgot to say about bass station 2 you can add a lot of synth patches you find them on novation website
I thought it said beringer and was like whoah?! This was my first analog synth too and it still kills it to this day. MY only minor gripe is the double tap menu for afx mode or duo phonic. Still the bomb! Cheers man.
Nice, clear vid. Thanks. One question: You say that the BSII can save four sequences per patch. Are you sure about that? I see other sources say there are four sequences globally (not per patch), but these sources are older, so maybe this was part of the recent firmware upgrade. If it's really four per patch, then I'm buying this thing for sure.
No, you cannot save 4 sequences per patch, there are 4 global sequences and on top of that, if you save your patch while the sequencer is turned on, the current sequence will be saved into the patch. So you can only save one sequence per patch.
Hey Dan, question, I am not very skilled yet at synth, but I’ve been having the Bass Station for 2 months now, and never used the coarse knob because every time I would tweak it, it just makes the whole sound out of tune for my track. In which situation or how could you use this knob? Thanks a lot :)
Hey, great question! So that tune knob changes the pitch for oscillator 1 or 2 depending on which one You have selected. One really cool way to use this is have the osc sync turned on, and changed the corse pitch to +7 to be safe or a -5 is also safe and that will give you some rich full sound that has a bit of grit with it :)
@@danfur7994 thanks a lot Dan, I’ll give it a try today and see ! Much appreciated you taking the time. I am hoping you’re going to keep on doing those explanatory videos as I find them great and very helpful. Simple, no condescendance, concise! Thanks again :) hope your safe and will enjoy the festive holidays as much as possible!
I've missed my Dan time! Nice video man. Have you ever used the software version of Novation Bass Station 2? I wonder how it compares to this. I used to have it as a VST in logic before my old Mac crashed. This video is making me miss it
awe :) sorry ive been so inactive recently, hoping to make new vids soon! but yeah i do have the original BS on VST and i loved it! it was one of the first soft synths i had as well tbh :P like first 5 i think? i dont use it anymore, but its part of my history

as a bassist looking to expand my sonic repetiore been researching a lot of similar synths and all signs keep leading me back to this one.

This WILL be my first synth when it arrives in a couple days :) (and that was before I saw this video)!
Great review thanks, notation are superb for beginners and your analysis has convinced me to try one.
The BS2 would also be my recommendation.
One of the best synths of all time.

How are you liking the AFX Station after owning it for over a year? Pros/cons?

yeah cant argue with that, but i guess i mean they've just been adding soo much to it since the hardware was released, their running outa buttons lol
This synth isn't ordinary. Its extraordinary.
Thank you very much.
You've got this
Great vid!
Thank you so much, im getting my first synth aswell and i think itll be this one (or the afx station 🤤)

I wonder how many AFX bass stations you will sell from this demo!
haha, gotta say that thing was a great idea from
novation

I don't think there is a vst for the Bass Station 2. For the original Bass Station exists one but not for the "
@@Sirius-qr4vu you're probably right. I can't remember that detail. It came with some piece of hardware.. maybe the Focusrite interface?

Made the worst mistake and sold mine last year to fund an Elektron- need to buy someone’s now
yes
Who needs a Moog when you can simply use the bass station!
The Korg Monologue is MUCH better!
