Very interesting video. I have the PRO3. My experience is a bit particular: after a lifetime of work in the field of robotics, the possibility finally arrives to dedicate myself to an old dream: learning to use a synth. I should have approached these machines with more caution, but I started with the PRO3. It was hard because at first I understood little and gave too much importance to the data on the display. Only later did I realize that I had to use more intuition and leave my hands free to rotate the knobs in search of the right sound for the moment. I realized that this approach was the right one after also taking the Take5 which has the least complex display and forces you to use your ears and search with the knobs. I am very satisfied with the Take 5 which has fantastic sounds and using it has allowed me to regain confidence and face the Pro3 which I now use with less awe. With this complex instrument it is nice to be able to discover new things every day and experiment. As for the Moog, for now it remains a dream. I am an amateur and do not find it right to make too high demands. I apologize for my English, I send greetings to all from Italy.

people definitely understood^^... yes with a pro3 and a take 5 you are really already set very very "appropriately" in the analog space... if you add something, I would go for maybe an OPSIX or a Hydrasynth (personally prefer the OPSIX) to get some nice FM sounds and gritty digital into your mix... they complement your analog setup really well... and if the price is right you could also add a modwave or wavestate for dreamy pads and soundscapes, although the OPSIX can be quite effective with that too... if you are hardware only you could also think about a drum machine or something, so you can create complete performances.

@@philxdev Thank you very much for your advices. I like to discuss with more experienced people who have the same passions as me. I'm working hard and I think your advice goes in the right direction. I need sounds that complement the range I can use. There's little point in adding a Moog to the two Sequentials right now. In my previous writing, I didn't want to brag and I omitted that I also own a Modal Cobalt8, a Model D and I just got the Zebra2 which is now on offer with many sounds. I'm experimenting and in the meantime I'm studying scales and harmonies....I haven't solved the problem of the drum machine, which I can't use with Ableton lite...I'll try to improve, it's hard for me but I enjoy it a lot and I always improve a little . Thanks again. Greetings and good music!

@@eligioelini9194 yeah I am also always using my little setup with my daw, as I am always trying to record my ideas and compositions and make it easier to work on. if you already use ableton, there is probably no need for a drum machine, as you can realize all that with ableton.. you could defenitely check out the free and IMO very good access virus emulator ( plugin ) dsp56300. this should already ad a lot of nice digital sounds to your portfolio... and the arpeggiator on that thing is really something;)... I am also thinking about a modal but the argon8 maybe with the big keybed as the keys were fantastic ( had one on loan for a couple of weeks ). Looking at what you have... what you need is basically "nothing":PP... everything else is IMO just nice to have for the ambitioned hobbyist to be frank.. and not everybody can or should be some "G.A.S.-guzzling-room-full-of-synth-with-no-music-to show-for-kind-of-guy"like a lot of youtubers seem to be these days;) Cheers Mate

The Pro3 is hands down the better of the two synths. I ended up selling the 37 and keeping the Pro3. You can achieve so much of the Moog sound on the Pro3 but also sooo much more. The sequences is ridiculously good and the FX are a welcome addition to the precursor the Pro2. The Pro3 is a chameleon mono/para and can be what you want it to be. The Sub 37 sounds like a Moog and not much else.

The PRO-3 is my favorite mono synth too. You can get a very good bass low end to the sound if you put the oscillator 3 to the sine wave form and run the coarse frequency to the lowest position. Then you can put the oscillator 1 and 2 to sawtooth and let the OB6 filter do the rest. The results are very bass rich synth sounds.

    • @jjrusy7438
      @jjrusy7438 Рік тому +3

FWIW, i eventually ended up with a similar combo on my BARP2600. the sine wave is the secret sauce. i put osc1&3 as sawtooth a touch detuned and that sine on osc2. then open the filter part way to the sweet spot where the speakers have to earn their keep. the sine alone is totally boring and almost inaudible, but it is the essence of the bottom end of the 3 oscillator setup

Interesting video, as always. When I saw people mentioning choosing Pro 3's over Sub 37's, and then I came across this video, I thought those synths would actually be somewhat similar, but soundwise, the difference between wavetable and analogue oscillators is so monumental I'd not even class it in the same category of synthesizer to even consider them candidates for comparison in the first place.

i picked up a pro 3 recently. the one thing that i love is the flexibility! different filter options, patching options
but beyond that is so expressive and just love how the oscillators sound.
The moog sound... lets talk about that for a second... sounds good but I think you dont really get the value for money as with sequential.
Moog seems to be all about sound but in terms of features per dollar is really hard to beat Sequential stuff.

For the sound I'd say the Sub37. That's what I bought anyway. That said I couldn't demo the Pro3 in person so....just going on online demos for better or worse. Also the sound of something is subjective anyway. You might prefer the Pro3 etc. I think one important area of consideration, maybe most important, is how easily you can integrate either into a modern production workflow and also how comprehensive that integration is. Everything is about automation nowadays in modern production. Sub37 has a Moog released editor which works well for this. Not sure how the Pro3 fares here since I don't have one. But yeah that feature should be foremost in one's mind if this will be a production synth. In a studio I mean. For live I don't know. I don't use them that way. Great overview/comparison though thanks.

Have owned both. The subsequent is my favorite built mono synth. I think the oscillators blew the pro3 away. I thought the pro3 was a bit sterile and adding modulation or effects was just make up. The sub37 is a little dark sounding and I personally preferred the brighter Grandmother and Model D. I would love a sub 25 !

  • @theleastsignificantbit4794

There are so many ways to overdrive the Subsequent: the mixer, feedback, and multidrive.
The multidrive is a FET, and a FET is essentially a transistorized version of a tube. The saturation inside the box with the Moog has to be heard to be believed.
You can also dial in some drift in the Moog VCOs via the menu.
The drawback is the clunky mod bus, but I love the synth and would never part with it.
To get the most out of the Sub’s sequencer, use a computer and the Moog plugin.
I don’t know if it is UA-cam compression, but the Sequential just doesn’t sound that good. And if I need crazy modulation, I’ll just use Pigments 4 that I bought for $100. It has modulation for days.

As a PRO 3 owner, I think you are spot on with this all. There is nothing I dislike about the PRO 3, yet I still find myself wanting to have a sub 37 for that low end grit. That's all that it would offer though in comparrison which to me wouldn't be worth spending nearly 2 grand on. The PRO 3 does absolutely everything I want and more and the best part is how easy it is to get to that place vs something like a hydrasynth. I think the biggest thing to add in favor of the PRO 3 on it's 3rd Osc is the ability to add user wavetables to it

Excellent review. If you are able, I would suggest trying out a used Pro-2. It is regarded by many, including me, as Dave Smith's best modern design. The oscillators are digital, but the filter, VCA, and distortion circuits are analog. If you ever give one a test drive, it would be great to hear your thoughts on it. I am not sure why the four digital wave morphing oscillators in a FM ring and digital modifiers were dropped in favor of the two DCOs plus one digital oscillator in the Pro-3. The tuned feedback in the Pro-2 (and Prophet 12, Polyevolver, and Monoevolver) are also essential to the character.

    • @Obtunder
      @Obtunder Рік тому +5

As i own both the pro 2 and pro 3, i can offer that the the 2 vco are more useful for the average user. The osc are continuous wave shape for better modulation. The pro 3 is far superior in its presence in a mix. The tuned feedback has been perfected on the pro3 w/ more useable and musical range. The lack of the character section is somewhat compensated by the complexity of the more modern wavetable oscillator which supports custom wavetables.
What I feel is missed on the pro 3 is less 1 less touch strip which lost pressure sensitivity and the lack of 2 stage serial/parallel filter configuration.
The pro 2 is slightly more profound and nuanced but the pro 3 is an absolute beast by comparison. I'm constantly taming the pro 3 and always searching for sweet spots on the pro 2.
So I think pro 3 is the most versatile and unless you are really seeking the most abstract sounds, it has 16x4 instead of 16x1 sequencer and 32 slot mod matrix instead of 16. The keys on pro 2 are terrible as with the p12 which I also owned. The newer sequential keybeds are much nicer and not subject to discoloration.
My solution was to keep both but this isn't an option for everyone. Pro 3 has needed updates to make it much easier and faster to use.
It's not exactly fair to compare these as each dsi/sequential synth is designed to be an instrument in its own right but the evolver/pro 2/prophet 12 aren't for everyone. The rest of the lineup is much more accessible for great sound and ease of use.

About the sequencer on the Moog....have you used the FREE editor that is included with the Moog? You would go back and edit your sequencer section if you had. Unless you just enjoy wading through the knobs and buttons to sequence, the editor is the best way to sequence on the Moog it gives you a visual into how the steps are configured and allows you to just click on the parameters that you want to change. Good video.

Little story on this actually. I did somewhat of a round trip. I had a sub37, and I loved it - but obviously it's got some limitations and some other filter options would be great.
I tried a pro3 in store, love at first sight and I thought "wowee this thing will replace like 4-5 of my things!" So I waited till payday and picked one up and put the s37 in storage to see if I'd miss it before I sold it. I had it for a few months, and for while it did cover some bases (easy pun opportunity there) I felt there was sometimes just a magic missing from it, but then I started to dislike it, I'm not sure why but it didn't invite me to use it as much as the s37 did. I felt like I was fiddling with it way more. The mod wheels to me felt super super cheap, keys didn't have that nice resistance I liked on the s37 - didn't spring back the way I'd like.
It's weird - there was a lot to love about it, the other filters were great. But the lower volume on the ladder annoyed me. I think that's the best way to sum it for me; it wasn't one thing that made me dislike it, just a lot of little things, I eventually found the extra features a little overwhelming. (probably because of my busy day job.) I ended up missing the moog and sold the pro 3. I haven't really missed much at all*. I think I was more in love with the potential of it, not so much the actual thing I used it for. (Ugh, same as this Jupiter X I'm about try and sell. Too, toooo fidgety - but that's another story)
*I do miss the screen and mod matrix from it from it though, absolute dream. But those were for playing around, just finding patches but never really used for anything. That's be fine if it were cheap but it's not. I do miss that sem filter, but I only used it for super simple patches. Honestly comfortable with the s37 again. But if someone could bring out something with a sem filter - like an erebus sized sem mono or duo, i'd be over the moon. I think I'd rather two machines that are more inviting to use to use.

The Sub 37 does everything I need from a mono when I perform on stage.

The effects are very nice - just gotta blend a little in - so as not suck away the analog fatness. You can really loose hours making crazy sounds and soundscapes, generative loops, like a modular - this thing can be set up to just sit there generating crazy shit! It is about which is best for you, but take note - if you are choosing a synth off YT videos - be aware you might not get what you expected. The Pro3 sounds better in person than in any YT video.

My Pro 3 is possessed by a benign ghost. After warming for 10-15 minutes, it will make a parameter change with no user interaction. It does this only once per session…really weird behavior. Sequential said it might need a board replacement, but the issue is so small, it hardly seems worth the effort. As for favorite mono synth…it is the Moog Sirin. The box is small and the sound is huge. If USB didn’t create a ground loop, it would be perfect.

As a long term owner of the Pro 3 I have some important facts to notice regarding this synth:
    1. Ladder filter. It has the option to compensate for the volume loss which greatly affects the signal loudness and drastically changes the resonance character. It sounds a lot more like a Moog with that switch disabled and has a lot more pleasant resonance peak! So if if you want to match the creamy sound of your favourite Moog synth don't turn it on. And you will need to set oscillators level quite low too, at least 12 o'clock. It will make the sound even quieter and you will need to compensate it manually with the general volume control. After that you will notice that the ladder filter is a little bit noisy ;-) I have managed to make it sound exactly like my Moog Grandmother. And after that I decided to sell my GM, because why keep it if it can be matched almost 1-1.
    2. To make oscillators fat like on the Moog just mix in some triangle waves on your Pro 3 oscillators. That will add that fat bass bottom we all like in our Moogs.
    3. Automating Attack , Decay on ADSR is tricky. It doesn't work like you expect it. In sequential they believe that the higher the rate of the Decay the faster it is. So when you turn the decay knob clockwise during automation it will actually make it shorter! Counter intuitive indeed!
    4. You can easily recreate 303 sounds by using SEM filter with high resonance and enabled glide. I think it sounds even better than 303. But you will need to sequence it from external midi as the native sequencer doesn't allow you to join notes of different pitches.
    4. You can make multitrack sequenced patches by automating volumes and pitches of each oscillator in paraphonic mode. While doing that you will discover some unfixed bugs ;-)
    5. There is no good patch librarian software from the sequential and you will need to buy a 3rd party program for it. But there is a free solution anyone can use. The web-site "presetpatch" will allow you to save your presets, share them and upload patches to Pro 3 all within the browser window. Quite handy! I shared my multitrack patch "Sweet Dreams" there which recreates the famous song we all love. Check it out.
    6. The best way to upload custom wavetable to Pro 3 is using Serum to create a 16 frame table and then use the site wav2pro3 to prepare a sysx file. Pro 3 oscillator has a really good interpolation between frames so in most cases a simple operation in Serum to limit the wavetable will work just fine. If you have a Pigments synth you can easily upload some amazing wavetables from its library.

Love the thoughtful commentary on the two. For me, they are both monosynths, so the ONLY important factor is the sound. The Sub 37 just has so much character and depth. The Pro 3 just sounds tinny to me comparatively. Add effects and external sequencing to the Sub 37 and it just shines.
