You're like those Google ads for film makers Parker, we think about something, and Boom! You've made a video on it. Unreal. Super helpful, thanks for this!
Parker has put a lot of effort here and as always , he is really investing in the quality of the delivery: Its consistent, professional, precise and relevant. Thanks for not wasting our time and also thanks for making it entertaining along the way. Its refreshing as well that you manage to do this without gimmicks. I Appreciate the content 👌
A good budget option for Atomos is the Shinobi -- since it doesn't have recording functionality it's much lighter and cheaper than their other products. It retains the 1080p 10 bit 1000 nit touchscreen and the solid Atomos UI, though, which is why I love mine. It's a good balance of price, features, and size/weight, IMO.
I compared the Atomos Shinobi with the AndyCine X7 and found the Shinobi had a massively warm color cast compared to AndyCine, everything looked very orange. I actually recorded footage, imported it and compared my calibrated computer monitor with the X7 and Shinobi, and yes the Shinobi was the warmest out of the 3. The problem is when I went to calibrate the Shinobi I found out that you have to buy a $100 cable in order to calibrate it with an XRITE unit? THIS IS COMPLETE BS AND ABSOLUTE PRICE GOUGING. For this reason I returned the Shinobi and kept the X7. I get accurate colors from the X7 and it's less than half the price of the SmallHD 7 inch. I do miss a waveform, but other than that missing option the X7 is a solid monitor that comes with a great case as well, which is actually a big value if you think about it.
"Get what you need and get back to work" - best advice I've heard in months. Little thing tho : this might be misleading to some beginners when you said that you need a monitor for "external recording" - you need an external recorder for external recording... Atomos's Inferno and Ninja V are external *recorders* with a monitor, not external monitors (you can get external recorders without a screen and in fact, that's how it was in the past and still is for some extremely high-end options). Just a lil head up :)
@@Leo_Dewa Haven't really paid attention to it. It's okay that electronics get hot. I have a Smallrig cage for the Shinobi which I mainly touch when adjusting the angle of the monitor.
I've used the SmallHD 702 OLED on a shoot last year. Wow did it make everything easier. GUI was super easy and it was light, bright and battery life was awesome. Would highly recommend at least renting it if you have access to one.
I've been owning a smallhd focus 5 inch ever since it was released back in 2017. Glad to see it still holds up as a really decent workhorse. On some studio shoots i could use these 2 extra inches on Focus 7 but I think the 5 inch will do just fine for many more years. Only thing i hate is the weak original cables, they get damaged easily. I've went through 4 of them. Other than cables and some dust particles under the touch glass, it has handled some serious abuse and still works like a dream.
I think the Lilliput A7s is worth mentioning for a budget monitor; it's 4k and has a lot of functions like a histogram, false color, peaking, color temp, aspect ratio, a grid, audio meters, safety markers, and image flip options - all of this for $160. I have an Atomos Ninja V & Inferno and I still use my A7s, especially when I'm recording something internally.
Thanks for the great info!. Andycine IS fieldworld. This info comes from fieldworld. Andycine is supplied by fieldworld and then they add their name to the monitor
I really like your editing style. I learned about monitors but your pacing i terraced with B roll and the smooth captions was awesome. Such a well put together video.
Hi Parker, great video! This was the most thorough, useful, and straight-to-the-point comparison video on camera monitors I've watched. I am wondering if SmallHD or any other brands than Atomos in 2022 has the SSD recording capability. I couldn't find anything about that on Google. It seems that SmallHD has everything I need, except for SSD recording.
Good video Parker, but Atomos is also doing the Shinobi who is like the Ninja V but without the recording capability and his drawbacks! It’s not necessary fair for Atomos to say that you’ll not recommend the Atomos, when you don’t present all what they have to offer!
Thanks for the video. Wondering how you came to the conclusion that the Andycine A6 plus is better than the Feelworld F6 plus? The stats & the build are identical. I was told it's the same exact product but rebranded. Any thoughts anymore info?
Parker this video was right on-time for me. Thank you for putting this together. Your time was not wasted at all. Very informative..... Appreciate the guidance.
I can't believe I've watched so many of your videos and I wasn't subscribed. This video was super helpful! As always, you were super clear and informative. I think I'll be going with a Small HD 7" even though I'm just shooting UA-cam Videos at home Hahaha.. Thanks Parker! OFFICIALLY Subscribed as of today, SMH
I have the Andycine A6 and it's wonderful. It's very portable and the image quality is amazing for something so small and inexpensive. The only problem is my camera but I plan on replacing it. However I have no intention in relplacing my monitor until it breaks and doesn't work anymore.
Gear review Parker, a good balance of monitors - some people will always suggest others you should have tried but a 20 monitor review just isn’t practical. So good balance. Totally agree with your conclusion. I went for the Ninja V purely as it was for the EOS R and I wanted 10-bit recording plus I get second recording in 8-bit to the SD - so the dual recording I was desperate for. It transformed my confidence and use of the R 👍🏻
What mounting system do you use on the ronin s that’s my last piece of the puzzle that’s not explained. The one with two grips plus monitor. I’ll toss you a few coins if need be.
Most professional video loaded with great information. After watching I believe a person would have all the knowledge they would need to make a very informed decision. Thank you.
Great video! Monitors are essentials, especially when you're working with gimbals like the Ronin M. Atomos comes in handy when wanting to start recording without touching the camera, I'll buy one soon, thanks for making my decision final.
Well enough, PORTKEY is good monitor, has resolution, nits and even camera controller unit. Most of the exposure and assist features too. Its better than andycine and desview in my opinion but costs little more than them. May be you can do version 2 of this or revision 2. Well happy New Year guys. Keep rocking.
Atomos Shinobi is fantastic for the price! Got a SDI/ hdmi version for £270! Massive upgrade from my andycine which was very difficult to see outside in bright sunlight
Thanks for the detailed review. I'm waiting for a Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7" 12G review to compare vs the atomos before I make my decision since i'd like the record option.
Im really liking the Swit CM55 c monitor. It is similar to the small HD focus but cheaper and still from a trusted brand. I have used several of the Swit wireless video transmitters in the past which were extremely reliable and pushed me towards choosing this monitor.
i use sony a9 m2 camera for wildlife photography. i use specs for reading purpose / close views. I also feel to have external monitor for my better views. Please suggest the right model.
@Parker Walbeck, I need your expertise. I understand why people need a external monitor, to have a bigger display than the LCD display of the camera. This would enable to the cameraman to check the foucs etc. However, I do not understand the additional features of the monitor provides, example, 3D LUT, false color, etc. Yes, some monitors offer advance features in this, and you may able to adjust. But the actual footage will not recorded with these settings right? How does these features benefits to the actual footage recorded? Please educate me. Thanks.
Thanks for the comparison Parker. I feel it’s a bit unfair to compare the Átomos recorders to monitors though. Shouldn’t you have included the Shinobi instead of the Ninja V?

@@uzibatish172 Sort of. It is kind of small and dark to properly see in sunlight but tools like focus peaking etc will help big time.
