  • I have been on HRT for 6 years now which transformed my life. Recently I had a check-up with a menopause specialist which showed that my hormone levels are still fine so I thought it would be a perfect time to do an update video about my HRT journey.

Great video Nisha! I started my peri when I was about 40/41 suffered for a year before I did anything about it. It was only the night sweats that turned a light bulb on and I thought MENOPAUSE!😮
When I went dr she was not happy to put me on HRT because I was"too young" and overweight 🙄🤬 I had to wait a whole year with horrendously heavy periods, bone aching, depression, memory loss, night sweats, total insomnia, I had to go to work every day feeling like this, I was a vertual zombie ! Life was not worth living my poor husband is a diamond, I don't know how he put up with me as I would often take it out on him. I went to dr and asked her if I could go back on the contraception pill just till I saw the consultant but she refused. I sobbed in front of her but still she would not help. When I did finally see the consultant he put me on HRT patches and like you Nisha within a few days I had my first sleep of 5 hours! , by the end of the week I was my old self again. Happy, gregarious, fun loving, energetic. I wept again - with relief. My poor husband then had to deal with this happy Harriet whose libido had gone into overdrive!!! 😊 It was clear sailing then for 15years. I was made to come off them because of breakthrough bleeding. I sobbed again knowing the horrendous life I would be returning to. As it happened the periods and other symptoms were milder but I was never the same as on HRT. Other things that can happen due to reduced oestrogen is bladder weakness ( stress or urge incontinence ) and prolapses of womb, bladder or bowel. My recommendation is as Nisha said GET ON HRT ASAP AND STAY ON IT FOR LIFE!
It is nothing short of cruel the way women have been left to suffer in the past and now if you have a bad gp!
I only wish I had been allowed that option to stay on it. I know my health, both mental and physical would have been greatly improved.
Good luck everyone who is on that hormone journey. ❤

I want to add a touch of caution on HRT. I was on it for nearly 18 years…..way too long but life was good and I didn’t want to upset the boat 😊 But, after missing a couple of mammograms I found I had breast cancer. The warnings you get from doctors along the way are real. Luckily it was only a 2cm mass and after a lumpectomy and radiation I have been fine for nearly five years. The surgeon and doctors all said my cancer was HRT driven. It has changed my life though, I am on calcium supplements and Tamoxifen. I don’t have the energy I used to have and my hips are creaky. Please get yearly mammograms if you are on HRT. 😘 I had no symptoms and certainly couldn’t feel that lump.

Sadly before the latest HRT research came out my GP said I should come off it. I’d been taking it successfully for a few years. It’s been horrendous ever since and I suffered with hot flushes and all the rest all over again. In desperation I asked to go back on it, but he said no. So please my friends, if you’ve decided to take HRT, and it helps you, STAY ON IT and enjoy life! Thanks Nisha for this frank conversation that we all need to hear. Xx

Thank you Nisha, I’ve been peri menopausal for about 3 or 4 years and on HRT for 2. I myself and other women I know have said we would rather have ten great years of life than live the next 20 yrs with what we were going through naturally (given the risks with HRT). I even wanted to create my own YT channel dedicated to this subject exclusively by chatting/ interviewing women from various backgrounds on their experiences with menopause. 🤪🙌🏼🤦🏼‍♀️ No one told me about this time of life. Yes it’s mother natures way of putting us out to pasture but modern life doesn’t allow us to do that as most of us work now into our 60/70’s. We need energy and clarity of thought into our old age. I’ve also noticed sugar increases the hot flushes - if that helps anyone out there. Thanks for raising awareness and sharing your story. ❤🙏🏼

What a wonderful thing you're doing by discussing this. I don't think many women know how much hormone therapy can help them. My symptoms were like yours except I had already stopped getting my periods. I felt so horrible I could barely function. No idea what was happening to me. I don't remember how I found out about HRT but once I did, wow! I educated myself (my doctor was no help) and found someone who prescribed them. It changed EVERYTHING. Women, keep going until you find someone who knows about it. It may take awhile. If your medical person is clueless, move on. This is your quality of life we're talking about. I'm in the U.S. and also pay out-of-pocket.

I menopaused rather late; I was 56 when I had my last period . This was 2007 and before that, whew, I surely had perimenopause weirdness. I retired at age 49, no doubt because my fluctuating emotions made working in an office untenable. It's so interesting to learn that HRT is an option now for premenopausal women. That could have made a difference.
As it happens, at age 49, after reporting vaginal dryness to an ObGyn, I was subscribed vaginal estrogens instead. They did keep my "nether regions" happy, so no dryness and, even more important to me, a healthy urinary tract. Estrogen is so important to keeping the urinary tract toned. Frankly, when my US insurance ended, I sourced the estrodial/estriol vaginal insert pill from overseas because it wasn't affordable here in the States. Saved my darn sanity! But in early 2017, that option dried up. Oh, I wonder why? Could it have been a new presidential fiat, lol?
Ugh, I was crestfallen. I tried a Vitamin E suppository for vaginal moisture to limited success. Within two years, I started having feelings of prolapse and discomfort. I was desperate. The estrogen "down there" had been so important, so curative. I joined a prolapse Facebook group and a Brit there reported that her doctor prescribed an estriol cream to her before surgery, in order to prime her vagina. So, hooray, I found an online pharmacy that allowed me to purchase a generic estriol cream. It's been a game changer. Happy, happy. We women need estrogen!--especially "down there."

I can never understand why Americans don't demand better healthcare!! I know Obama visited Australia and UK and studied our healthcare and tried to bring it in, in USA (sadly, it was the first thing Trump scrapped to give the rich more tax cuts) but everyone pays a small 2% tax...no refund on it in the tax return, but it covers everything and everyone (so of course the rich don't want to pay their share, they get private insurance as their work bonus)... but it covers medicines, hospital, x-rays, emergency surgery, doctor visit... its only elective unnecessary surgery (like plastic surgery to get big boobs, a new nose ,etc) that you have to have private cover for....👍

A lot of people on HRT are describing other symptoms and complications. It does also come down to genetics, health and common sense. I knew after trying Wellbutrin for 2 days, antidepressants aren't for me. Exercise helps depression. Calcium and strength training help bone density.

I have been on HRT Pellet therapy for a few years now. I will never be with out it. It gave me my life back. I do agree , i wish insurance would cover it. So many women are suffering because of the cost. I pay 350.00 every four months for my pellets. Thank You Nisha for bringing this knowledge to women. Not enough women talk about it. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover it....they will cover the pills but they were hard on my stomach.....I think the patches are safer as well....so I pay. Thank you for the great video! It does need to be talked about more. There is so much misinformation out there.....many of my friends are afraid to get on it.

I suffered horredously for 10 years with every symptom going! It literally ruined my life and changed me. I thought I had to just put up with it and get through it until fairly recently when it became much more talked about and the fear and risks of taking HRT were proved to not be as bad as was always thought. I've been on HRT for 1 year (The hot flushes were milder but the low mood and loss of interest in everything was still very much there) and it has literally changed my life! I would recommend it to anyone who is suffering as it is a total life changer, I feel more like myself again and so wish I had started it years ago x Also Nisha, I know I have said before that I suffered terrible bloating while I had a mirena coil fitted (15 years ago) and when I had it removed (a year later as couldn't stand the bloating and a friend of mine had hers removed because of the same problem) it stopped completely. I am now on progesterone tablet and estrogen gel and do not get any bloating at all. I wanted to mention this as I know that when you saw a specialist she said because you would still have to take progesterone in tablet form if you remove your coil, it will still cause bloating it hasn't in me x

Very well done video Nisha. I had a total hysterectomy at 45 so I had induced menopause. I was put on HRT immediately as my doctor heartily believed the benefits outweighed the risks. I've been on it for 25 years now with no problems. My twin sister went through the regular journey and she had so many of the symptoms you mentioned. She even developed anxiety which she had never had before. Thank you for saying every woman's journey will be different and they need to decide what works best for them. Glad you are doing well now.

This was very informative! I had my initial visit with a nurse practitioner on an online platform here in the states to get on HRT and I’m starting on the 2nd lowest dose of the patch, progesterone capsules at night and a cream for the vag. I’ve been in peri for about 6 years now ( I’m 51) and have had all the symptoms with some just starting to get worse ( hot flashes) I haven’t felt like myself in years and have had moments of suicidal thoughts every 7 months or so when my hormones tanked lower. I guess I’m one of the small percentage of women who have it bad based on your video. I look forward to starting this!!! I’ve tried everything under the sun so far natural and I feel it’s time to bring out the big guns.. I just can’t bear to have another year go by when I feel like a shadow of my former self. Thank you for letting me know I’m not alone.

Thanks so much for this Nisha!!!! We are living longer now and life expectancy has doubled since the late 1800s and hormone decline and all the negative effects on some woman but not all is very real!!!!! :*) They actually started the early HRT in the 1940s when life expectancy was increasing!!!! I have had consultation with Dr. Taylor and it was the best thing I ever did!!!!! My Mother had postpartum deppression after she had my brother and she was in and out of hospital :*( They did not treat her hormones she was given shock treatments and phsyciatric meds. Makes me so sad and she passed at age 62. Also hrt does not cause breast cancer. If you get breast cancer and its hormone related it can feed the cancer. Also, one out of three woman over 50 die of heart attack over 50 and one of 39 die of breast cancer. My stepmom was on hrt for 30 years and she passed of lung cancer :*( We are brave ladies!!!!

My doctor told me I was peri-menopause aged 35yrs and since I became menopausal I have gone to the doctor many times to go on HRT but they only want to give me anti-depressants which I don't want . I tried at first but I don't want them any more , they don't work for menopause for me . Your video has spurred me on to try again or even go private like you say . Thanks again Nisha 💗Xx

This was very informative. Thank you for sharing all that you’ve learned. I thought that I could only stay on HRT for a limited time. I’ve been on HRT for about four years now. Unfortunately I was prescribed estrogen only and about six months ago, began having heavy bleeding despite being menopausal. A scan showed endometriosis. A uterine biopsy, which was quite painful, was clear thankfully, and my doctor realized that I had never been prescribed progesterone which caused all of these awful issues. I’m now taking a combo of estrogen and progesterone and am still on the road to recovery. I wish I had researched for myself instead of trusting my doctor.

Same here, I had breakthrough bleeding , polyps and a small fibroid so was taken off them- if only I'd known about the progesterone I could have fought my corner! It comes to something when we have to research our condition to make up for the lack of knowledge our general practitioners (and consultants in some cases) have regarding our ailments and conditions. 🙄 - and that's when you can get to see them in the first place!!!

My perimenopause started at 40 and it was awful. About seven years ago my GP gave me a copy of a study done on SOYA and the help it offers women at this time of life. My menopause is coming to an end I feel and will be 52 on Friday. My flushes, nightsweats and other symptoms were minimal due to the soya supplements I take. If you check out the Asian countries who naturally have a high soya diet - they do not suffer menopause! This blew my mind. SO - my reason for writing is to all those who for many reasons are not suited to HRT, look into the Soya option. After about 6 weeks taking my supplement daily I felt a difference. I take one hi volume capsule a day and would hate to have done menopause without it. Great health benefits. Don't just suffer ladies, there are options out there. Mines was Soya and it worked. Thank you Nisha for doing this video - it I'd so informative. I do wonder if I'm too late to ask my doctor - might help me boost my life back 10 years lol but as my symptoms are almost zero would I be considered I wonder. Do u need to meet a certain criteria? Any info appreciated ♡♡♡

Hi Nisha! At the age of 40, I had a hysterectomy because I had fast-growing fibroids! I had 6 pounds of fibroids and had no choice! The growth process would have continued if I hadn't done anything! But I was super happy because I had very difficult periods (dysmenorrhea). For me, it was a liberation! I've had fybromialgia since the same age! With all the side effects, I have no idea. I haven't had any menopausal symptoms. I've never been diagnosed with menopause! But I think I would have preferred menopausal symptoms to those of fibromyalgia (chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome and dozens of other very unpleasant effects). I was and still am in heat! After a blood test, the doctor told me it wasn't due to menopause! Have a good week! xxx

I'm in menopause. I was on Prempro for many years, over 10. I developed blood clots in my left leg that were extremely painful. My doctor immediately took me off my HRT cold turkey, put me on blood thinners. Apparently the HRT played a big part in the clotting. Scared me into stopping HRT for good. I've been off them for a few months now and I feel ok....just feel my age more. Just my menopause journey.

Wow this is like listening to my own history. I spent 6 years having tests for MS with a neurologist, and on various meds Inc antidepressants. My GP point blank refused HRT for me because get migraines. This is not right. The patch and gel are okay because they avoid the digestive system.
I had to go private too and I also cried when the menopause GP said I could have it, because I finally felt listened to. I'd had all the same symptoms to you Nisha, and I also got Evorel patch and Utrogestan tablets. After 1 week I felt so much better. I've increased my patch size /dose too now, but it's all helped. I also had horrendous periods and 5-day migraines and this has reduced. So I also think it has been a Godsend. I also like restorative yoga (the relaxing sort, not the acrobatic sort!) and it helps with calming.
I have also had digestive issues; another symptom is an increase in food intolerance and digestive issues. Tinnitus is another random symptom - a whooshing sound in my ears like I can hear my own circulation plus itchy skin. I find magnesium flake baths also help as it soaks directly into the muscles. Vitamin D is also helpful and can help with boosting your estrogen efficacy.
I hope this insight helps everyone in case it might be relevant for others. ❤

      Some things I would encourage.
Eliminate processed foods. Caffeine. Alcohol. Stress to the body.. get to bed early. Research what your putting on your skin. Deodorants contain endocrine disruptors that mess with your hormones. Make up, body lotions all have toxins in them. That play havoc with your hormones too. There's a few apps where you can scan the barcode of your beauty products and it scores them and gives you alternatives to try that aren't toxic to the body. Hydrate. Not tap water.
      Good luck 👍💓

With that being said I can think of 4 woman I know personally who well exceeded 90. One had 10 years of dementia lying in a bed @ a facility. One wanted to work until her dying day, then had a short illness and crossed over. Another woman is continuing to have health problems and is more than ready to leave this earth. Her daughter is somewhat burdened with her care. The other is exhibiting signs of senility, but still lives alone. She could sadly end up an accident waiting to happen.

I was in my 40s when I went into perimenopause. I had horrendous periods but luckily my insurance covers a gynecologist (US) who did a uterine ablation me, which removes the lining of the uterus. After that I never got a period but still had all the other symptoms of perimenopause because I still had my ovaries. He put me on HRT but got a lump in my breast after being on it for 15 years. I had a lumpectomy but after that I decided to go off of it. It took awhile for my body to adjust to it but I think I must have been in menopause by then because it wasn't too bad. I think all of women's health should be covered by insurance everywhere. On a side note I don't know if the play Menopause the Musical is in the U.K. but if it is and you get a chance to go you should go see it. It's hysterical 🤣

I had irritable bowel much of my adult life Even though I've been a vegetarian and eating well. At a doctor's suggestion, I started taking low dose daily psyllium in the morning with breakfast, and that completely transformed me. Even though I got a lot of fiber in my diet from food, there's something about psyllium that just increases general motility without having a bad effect on gut bacteria. Funny enough, it was the progesterone in HRT that started revving up my irritable bowel again. And I've read up on it, and sure enough bloating and digestive issues are one of the main side effects of progesterone/ progestins, even if you're not taking them orally. For me taking HRT is much more positive than negative, but this is unfortunate side effect. My gut head improved so much over the years that I wasn't doing the psyllium daily anymore. I went back to that regimen along with every other night magnesium once I started having issues due to HRT, and it has improved immensely. FYI

I don't normally comment but my story is identical to the lady below and I would like to endorse her words of caution about HRT. Nearly 20 years on HRT, started in my mid 30s because I had osteoporosis and HRT was one of the ways of treating it in the 90s. It worked and my bones are healthy. I fought to stay on it as I felt so well and did not experience any menopausal symptoms at the time I would have been going through the menopause. Then I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I could feel a little lump and asked for a referral. 100% HRT driven according to the oncologist. Thankfully just a mastectomy (that in itself is life changing in many ways) and Tamoxifen and it has not returned. That was nearly 11 years ago. Strangely I feel just as great without HRT as with it, but appreciate that not everyone feels the same. I do think its valuable but needs to be used carefully with regular check ups.

Im 61 and 20 years ago i went to drs with flushes low mood no energy low libido and i was given antidepressants and a bone scan on my wrists and that was it. Now i realise nearly all my problems were menopause but it wasnt talked about or acknowledged like it is now. I tell all the younger women around me dont suffer get on HRT. I recently started hot flushes again but i think its to late for me to get HRT now x

It's never too late. I went on aged 60 and felt the benefits almost straight away mood wise

I've been denied HRT due to having the BRCA 2 gene and family medical history. I was diagnosed with perimenopause since my twenties. It's been a very rough ride and I want to get off of it. Hormones? More like horror moans. If there is a chance for relief...bring it on.

But even though some women are going thru menopause without symptoms doesnt mean that hrt wouldnt be beneficial . Like you said there is info coming out about the benefits of hrt and how estrogen effects so many things

In the US, at least in my area, some of the symptoms have our Dr's check thyroid. Lots of women here go on thyroid meds around this time. The brain fog and "laziness". About heart issues, my husband's daughter is 30 and was having some palpitations and shortness of breath with a huge history of heart issues and none of the doctors would address it!!! Said it was her lungs🤯
