Great Video. Its good to see these machines getting a bit of coverage now. Through watching your video and others it has inspired me to do a video on the E-mac as I feel it is the neglected 'Mac' and it needs a bit of air time.
These are great machines. I used one as a daily driver for a long time and they were great for photo editing. With some open source software you can still do a fair bit with them. My old one is still being used by my nieces mostly as a simple game machine.
Can't believe how many people remember this thing fondly! I just remember it losing my work projects and constantly freezing/ not working properly (these replaced the classic beige macs in my elementary school, they worked wayyyyy better than the eMac).
I remember my Year 2 teacher ordered an eMac for our class, in 2003. She must have been a fan because we were the only classroom in the school to have an eMac for some reason. I remember being amazed at the shiny white design, and the aqua interface. The class would take turns playing Otto-Magic. So much nostalgia. Our computer rooms were filled with the iMac G3’s, which were discarded around 2006 unfortunately. I remember them being kind of unreliable. We had 1 of the graphite DV iMacs, and my friends and I somehow knew it was the fastest one despite not knowing anything about macs back then. Fun times.
We had one of these in first grade. It was the slowest thing on earth. And my uncle has one in the garage. These things can be pretty slow on newer softwere.
I bought one of these about 5 years ago from a yard sale for $20. Dicked around with it and discovered it to be pretty much useless so I built a hackintosh instead and couldn't register an AppleID without having an official Apple product. Made an AppleID with the eMac and was able to log in with the hackintosh. eMac went in the trash. Probably should've saved the keyboard, mouse, and power cable though.
I have some personal history with this model. I went to elementary school in 2001, first IT lesson had in 2002. Back then we had only one class equiped with computers, very old PCs running Win 95 or 98, nevermind. During lesson one computer had to be shared by two students. Then in 2005 suddenly our school received a substantial amount of these eMacs. For us it was a great upgrade! Different environment, one computer per user, wow factor was very big then. As I observed many other school in Poland also used eMacs, even I met them at the end of my high school, but as secondary PCs in library. It was in 2013 and then eMacs was already veeery obsolete, but still working unlike PCs from the same year. I even saw them rotting in storage. Probably I would be able to get one fo free then (but didn't have any room for one then). Many other people 5-7 years older and younger from me knows eMac, so this model was for nearly all of us a first contact with Mac at all. From another perspective - I felt that these computers didn't have enough power. Sometimes operating in spreadsheet or vector graphics was painful. Despite this in 2005 it was enough to browse Internet and play flash games (extinct right now, but man! we spent hours on them).
hitting volume up, volume down over and over to make it get stuck on the popping noise for an extensive period of time was me and my classmates favorite thing to do back in 2005 to drive the computer teacher bonkers
I still use one of these for scanning documents and edit images for items on eBay. I run Linux on mine and have no issues with it. UA-cam even works in terminal mode but, is slow in web browser.
i have an iMac G3 (2nd or 3rd series) and iMac G4 (lamp); but I've always liked the look of these. I need to grab one. (I also want to get an old Mac G3 AIO.) I love old Apple machines. They were so cool and futuristic looking.
A couple years ago my intermediate school had a storage room that had tones of these on shelves and behind one was another one I wish I was still at this school and should have taken one without a doubt
I think they had these in some of the student computer labs at my university back around 2004-2005 and they were pretty slow machines even back then. They looked amazing though.

We had one of these in my fifth grade classroom. I never saw the teacher or anyone else use it but I was always so intrigued by it. I wanted one but I don’t really know what I would have done with it.
Changing the PRAM battery has always been a bit of a headache with these all-in-one machines. The earlier 5500 and similar models are much easier with a slide-out logic board.
i have one to recycle. it works fine but isn't very useful because it's very slow and you can't upgrade it. it's also super heavy. someone is going to turn it into an art project.
I primarily used the eMac in high school, although it wasn't hard to find an iMac either. A lot of students abused the heck out of both computers and would punch out the speakers on the eMacs with a pen or pencil.
i have the very similar model. it came from a university in berlin and the hard disk wasn't formated. i found a whole lot of educational programs and research results. i didn't understand most of it but its interesting.
The literal only thing that kills mine for me is the PPC cpu because it's difficult to find real good applications for it. For me at least. It just feels like any version of any photo editing software you could use would be junk, it couldn't handle HD video editing, et cetera. Pro Tools would be the only thing I could conceivably see these being useful for these days, and maybe vintage emulation. SNES emulation looks fantastic on these, and the sound cards are actually top quality.
A little story here. In 2009, my iMac was stolen and I had to buy a cheap Mac and found a eMac for $150 at the time and used it temporarily until I bought a late 2009 Mac Mini. What I think about the eMac? I think it’s pretty heavy and not stupid fast but good enough for basic use.
Of course, the eMac was a G4 with a flat panel CRT screen, making it great for editing photographs, whereas the iMac G3 was noticeably curved and smaller.
Not sure about the very early release models of this eMac. But the 1.25/1.42Ghz models will definitely need a recap for the caps used on the logic board. These were definitely impacted by the capacitor plague of the early 2000s. Saw two blown caps on my 1.42Ghz eMac while cleaning it out. Despite 2 caps having completely vented tops, the machine still runs fine. It's definitely something I want to fix though so I don't use the eMac very much as running it with bad caps can cause more problems. So I only run it when I really need to. Not sure on the analog board, but it's mainly the motherboard that needs the recap. My model used mainly thru hole mounted caps so it's not one of the more difficult machines to recap unlike some older Macs that used SMD mounted caps. (those caps had leaking issues with age so not related to the defective capacitor issues the 2000s era machines had)
Hay, just a question please, I have a similar eMac 2006. What is the command to open the DVD/CD tray? I ejected a game and closed the door. How to open it again? thanks !
Now take out the inside, sell that, use the shell (every part) and make/mod a PC or Hackintosh into it. Along with a good quality (whatever size) LED-LCD.
Yes, I can confirm that in 2021, when trying to boot a 2006 era eMac, in order to play CIV III (still, so much fun), you gotta massage that power button for at least ten seconds before it fires up. Now.... time to destroy the Romans!
Do you think you can make a video on how to connect to internet via Airport on old PowerMac? Because i'm connected to My PowerMac G4 QuickSilver but on internet explorer, safari, and fire fox says "Server Not Found"
How difficult is it just to get at the Hard Disk? while this video is now pushing about 4 years old, i just got one of these about a month ago and i think the hard drive is beginning to fail,
I have one of these; it's such a beautiful computer. I have limited space and want to use it for composite or via input for my retro consoles so I won't need to be crowded with a tube TV any ideas for adding av inputs of any type. Thanks.
I was just using my eMac today. Even though I have a 2017 iMac 27 inch screen I go back to the eMac to convert files, such as .cwk files I made a long time ago.(AppleWorks). I convert them into a .png files to work on my newer iMac, and I convert old QuickTime music. The best thing about it has both system Mac OS X and 9 on it. That's the way it came.

My model used mainly thru hole mounted caps so it's not one of the more difficult machines to recap unlike some older Macs that used SMD mounted caps. (those caps had leaking issues with age so not related to the defective capacitor issues the 2000s era machines had)
damn... and i had just found a 1.25ghz model on fbmkt D:
Can it run Rise of the Tombraider at ultra settings?
I recently bought one of these for $40. Really cool machine.
Just once I want to find something neat like this.
Hay, just a question please, I have a similar eMac 2006. What is the command to open the DVD/CD tray? I ejected a game and closed the door. How to open it again? thanks !
132 Hz monitor in 2003
Damn son.
I remember how cheap the screens were and how heavy! Looked like the screen would have like radiation or something coming out of the CRT screen lmao!
Those were actually quite good CRT screens. But they made for such an incredibly heavy computer!
Amazing, got one recently and I love it!
Lovely bit of kit that one!
would be cool to put an new imac hardware on the old case.
It’s so pretty! I agree that the design still holds up. If Apple was still building a CRT Mac, I feel like this is what it would look like.
I wonder if it’s possible to convert one to LCD
We just threw ours out today. I removed the logic board to have inset into a table top.
I got one for $5 at a garage sale. Q tips are good tools to clean the exhaust port.
could you mod this computer to act as a monitor for old consoles?
Now take out the inside, sell that, use the shell (every part) and make/mod a PC or Hackintosh into it. Along with a good quality (whatever size) LED-LCD.
What did Apple say when you took it apart..
heck
your warrenty is voided.
Gynaecide lol!
Your warranty was not invalidated by installing new drives or ram. But putting parts in this dinosaur is like giving a transfusion to a corpse.
Because i'm connected to My PowerMac G4 QuickSilver but on internet explorer, safari, and fire fox says "Server Not Found"
How difficult is it just to get at the Hard Disk? while this video is now pushing about 4 years old, i just got one of these about a month ago and i think the hard drive is beginning to fail,
You are one of my favorite you tubers
Yay tech videos
Try to find the 2005 model.. Its quite a beast!!
I have one of these; it's such a beautiful computer. I have limited space and want to use it for composite or via input for my retro consoles so I won't need to be crowded with a tube TV any ideas for adding av inputs of any type. Thanks.
I have fond memories of these in elementary school for testing
I have EXACTLY THE SAME (specs) but I upgraded the RAM (256mb->768mb)
You connect video game consoles into these? (Like ps3 or Nintendo switch?)
Will only run very specific versions of Linux, which is why it got tossed.
Hey does eMac support for wireless networks?
wow, I would love find one of those. they are very heavy buying only the transportation would be huge expensive.
I recall that the DVD drive could be opened by hitting the eject button on the keyboard.
When opened and looked at fro the side the eMac looks like someone just piled hardware together.
Why it doesn't have a password if it belongs to someone else something fishy about that
I had one like this when I was 14, I played SNES emulator on the mac
This thing looks so awesome not gonna lie but would have been cooler if the Drive cover was on the drive front and would have come out with the tray
I would like to know what brand and model is your watch and please keep up the good work.
It's the Fitbit Blaze :)
they should start making a modern version of the eMac
I was just using my eMac today. Even though I have a 2017 iMac 27 inch screen I go back to the eMac to convert files, such as .cwk files I made a long time ago.(AppleWorks). I convert them into a .png files to work on my newer iMac, and I convert old QuickTime music. The best thing about it has both system Mac OS X and 9 on it. That's the way it came.
Would you make a review and upgrade of a Compaq Presario CDS 520?
Just dumped two of these and a iMac iMac g3. They were the 1.42 and 1.25, both with stands and 2 hb ram....no one wanted them.
