Sonic may not have had the best selling games compared to the likes of Mario, but the franchise's influence can't be denied. You don't see that many people making Mario OC's on DeviantArt. That's a weird way to put it, but Sonic's influence on young people was and is profound. There were many more cartoons, movies, etc. than Mario ever had. Nintendo is obsessed with keeping its brand safe and controlled; they tend not to risk making licensed material like this. Until recently again with the Mario movie. I'm not sure what Brian's bar for a "truly great franchise" is but Sonic, despite its low points, seems like it should meet that bar.

The games took a dip in quality for a long time. IGN rated the Dreamcast games really well. Those games earned it. But Heroes/Shadow/2006 put a bad taste in their mouths. UA-cam had some harsh reviews too. That was known as the dark era for a reason.
The fact that secret rings came out the same year as super Mario galaxy and colors came out the same year as galaxy 2 is also a bad look. And forces coming out the same year as odyssey
