Control and thrust arms worn ball joints will cause in most cases front end vibration and loose steering feel at cruising speeds. Even if they are not knocking. Harsh roads asphalt and ridgy motorway will make the vibrations noticeable. Thrust (tension) arms, also called caster arms, will cause heavy vibrations at high speeds and during braking, when the bushing cracks.
I used Delphi brand on mine and they only lasted maybe a year ! Been searching for culprits of steering wheel shaking when braking over like 40mph and lo and behold I don’t see cracks in the bushings but I can literally move them by hand !! I would NOT recommend Delphi brand thrust arms/control arms to any bmw owner
For me this was a bit to rushed - mayb for the people that have more confidence working on their cars?! Lucky there are so many people doing this job on here and i found one that suits my basic needs 😂 Great job nevertheless 😊
Thank you for watching! I was thinking to make a video, how to replace crankcase hose. But there are many moments that cannot be captured on video, such as not crawling with a camera. So I just changed it in my car already. I can only say that you need to remove the air intake. I think even without me there are videos where people say where to crawl and what to shoot. I make videos without sound, where people can see each step step by step, but it wouldn't work out that way in this point.
Yes, it should be at ride height. I lift it up until that one side started to lift up from jack stand, and then a little more.. This is all approximate, car is moving up and down all the time. If more people inside or some load, your car will be lower, if you drive by yourself, car will be higher.
Install ball joint, attach arm to body. Do not tighten the bolt to body. Install wheel. Rest the wheel on the ground tighten the bolt to body. Remove wheel reattach covers. It's very easy on a scissor lift that can lift the whole car on it's wheels or in a pit.
@@mikes.garage "No, you need to replace brake discs with brake pads" My current car is on fourth set of front brake discs in a bit more than two years. It's getting ridiculous. Every time, vibration during braking returns after a few thousand kilometers. It ends up getting quite violent eventually, I've had brakes lock up before. It probably makes the most sense to check hub runout next, and I appreciate the notion that it isn't the control arm most likely; the vibration isn't evident at first but gets worse as the brakes warm up, then even at slow speeds I feel intermittent harder/less hard braking. So it could be pad deposits; but something causes them in the first place, and that's a mystery for lots and lots of bimmer owners.
@@mikes.garage when you say knocking..like metal on metal? BC I here something that sounds like it’s coming from my glove box on that side..can’t put my finger on it though..it almost sounds like dishes in a box.I know that sounds weird..
It’s not like metal on metal, but like plastic rumbling. And what seems to be knocking on the glove compartment is most likely the wires under the passenger seat.
I’ve noticed my steering is a bit lighter than it used to be in my E60. Took it to a local shop and they told me all Suspension components still looked good. Your old control arms visually looked fine. it wasn’t until you moved them around to notice the bad wear. I’m wondering if it was an oversight by the shop and that my car could use some new control arms to get back the tighter steering feel. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
@@mikes.garagewhat kind of knocking sound exactly? Do u happen to have a video? Or even be able to describe it so I can confirm if it is the same sound?
My e61 went through inspection in Germany without a fault and 3 of 4 control and thrust arm bushings were toasted. I know because I exchanged them one week later.
I have some steering wheel wobble when driving around 50-60mph, would this be caused solely due to the worn wishbones? Should i replace other components while i am replacing these? Thanks
Steering wheel wobble can cause by out of balance wheels or damaged tires. If you have bad ball joints you should hear knocking sounds on road cracks. Yes, if your wishbones need to be replaced, good idea to replace control arms as well
Not necessarily, I have a 2004 545, I have the same issue and it’s not my tires or wheels, it’s my struts and bushings, but you can just replace your controls arms and it’ll solve that issue, also your alignment.

Just like that 👍🏻
So many people do it wrong to tight the bold when the arm is hanging. 10-20k and the rubber is gone!
you out here saving my life w these videos 🙏 as a DIYer, i really appreciate you. thank you

Makes sense
Curious. Do you compress the suspension all of the way? It should be at ride height, no? How does one know that?

did you need an alignment after that ?
The alignment is not necessary after this job, but I would do it anyways.
Will this solve heavy steering wheel vibration when braking at high speeds?
no
No, you need to replace brake discs with brake pads

Maybe, but you should hear knocking sound on road cracks. If no noise, then it’s not control arms

Thrust arm bad -> knocking sound if a brake.
