Cross kind of just rolled with it, like, oh yeah I’ve heard about you, “Mind like a steel trap.” Or him talking about how he met his wife and they bonded over the work of a poet they met, and he explained the moment by comparing it to Fagles’ translation of The Iliad. Or that time James Franco tried to stump him with some Lord of the Rings trivia, and Colbert basically revealed that he had the entire Simarillion recorded in his head. Yep. I watched the Colbert Report and The Daily Show with Stewert religiously. Both guys were hilarious, and their shows were exceptional. Have you seen The Daily Show today? A family member will occasionally watch that trash and I literally get enraged listening to that affirmative action reject Trevor Noah speak. That is why their shows were such massive successes. Trevor Noah is NOT even REMOTELY funny. There is basically no comedy whatsoever to anything he does...if you swapped him onto MSNBC, you would never know that he was a "comedian". I used to like Bill Maher when he would just stick to doing stand-up but ever since he thought he became the voice of reason and American politics I care less and less what he has to say, plus the fact that he discriminates against religion it's very anti-American, no matter how goofy or silly we think something is, Joe knucklehead across the street has every right to believe whatever he wants, and making fun of someone for having religious beliefs just makes the person making the jokes look like a jackass
I'll take Colbert over Maher any day of the week! Colbert is pure comedy and entertainment, mocking the absurdity of politics and society. Maher used to do this, but over time, has become too serious, self righteous and boring. Oh well, to each his own!

So Colbert (who is very religious) was pushng back at Maher's atheism just as he did Ricky Gervais. But Gervais gets that it is a fun intellectual debate and Colbert (an improve artist) is teeing him up and it's hilarious. Maher felt personally attacked and didn't see the opportunity.

Bill has this need to constantly be right. Can’t seem to go with the punches, especially those who contradict him. Colbert always seemed to push Bill a little and enjoyed it. I remember the time David Cross was on his show and mentioned some random bit he saw once from back in the 90’s and Colbert just launched into reciting the lines like he had just rehearsed them five minutes ago.
He has one of the most impressive memory recall abilities you’ll ever see, is a lightning fast improviser, and he devours books. So… yeah. Pretty intelligent. You and I are chumps in comparison.
I just went and watched Bill’s Colbert appearances and they were great.
